2012 Jeep Wrangler problems

The Jeep Wrangler is a series of compact and mid-size four-wheel drive off-road SUVs manufactured by Jeep since 1986, and currently in its fourth generation. The Wrangler JL, the most recent generation, was unveiled in late 2017 and is produced at Jeep's Toledo Complex.

The Wrangler is a direct progression from the World War II Jeep, through the CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the mid-1940s through the 1980s. Although neither AMC nor Chrysler (after it purchased AMC in 1987) have claimed that the Wrangler was a direct descendant of the original military model — both the CJ Jeeps and the conceptually consistent Wrangler, with their solid axles and open top, have been called the Jeep model as central to Jeep's brand identity as the rear-engine 911 is to Porsche.

Similar to the Willys MB and the CJ Jeeps before it, all Wrangler models continue to use a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield and can be driven without doors. Also, with few exceptions, they have part-time four-wheel drive systems, with the choice of high and low gearing, and standard open bodies with removable hard or soft tops. However, the Wrangler series was specifically redesigned to be safer and more comfortable on-road, to attract more daily drivers, by upgrading its suspension, drivetrain, and interior, compared to the CJ line. The suspension on all Wranglers included trackbars and anti-roll bars, and, from the 1997 TJ onwards, front and rear coil springs instead of the previous leaf springs.

From 2004 on, the Wrangler has been complemented with long-wheelbase versions, called Wrangler Unlimited. 2004-2006 models were longer versions with 2 doors. In 2004 only automatic transmission-equipped “Unlimited” versions were sold. In 2005 both an automatic and manual 6-speed (NSG-370) were offered. Since 2007, the long-wheelbase Wranglers were four-door models, offering over 20 in (508 mm) more room. By mid-2017 the four-door models represented three-quarters of all new Wranglers on the market.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-05
  • VIN: 1C4BJWDG7CL
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: While interstate driving the vehicle dash dinged, I looked down to find the ABS, Traction Control and Emergency Brake came on. I immediately pulled off the interstate for a visual inspection of the breaks and brake fluid but did not see any glaring issues. I took the vehicle to a local shop, they read the code (C2200) and advised I needed a new ABS Control Module (Mopar Part #68145835AE). The local shop advised the Module is difficult to find, but they found one and would complete the work for $2,400.00 ($1,500 of which was for the ABS Module part). I called a local Chrystler, dodge, Jeep (Lou Fusz) dealer in O'Fallon to price verify the part. I scheduled an appointment for three weeks out. They also confirmed the code and need to replace the ABS Module for $1,500.00 ($881.00 of which was for the ABS Module part); HOWEVER, Jeep-Mopar told the dealership that the part is not available until March 20 of 2024 which would leave me with two options. 1) Sell the vehicle to the dealer; however, their offer took advantage of the ABS issue and was extremely low 2) Wait and drive the faulty vehicle Driving the Jeep with a faulty ABS Module may jeopardize critical systems, resulting in poor braking performance and potentially create a very dangerous or deadly situation. A search of this issue online in Jeep Forums has shown mass number of similar issues and others experiencing the same part deadly; meaning there are an untold number of jeeps driving with a faulty ABS Module. I pled to the NHTSA to please investigate and pressure Jeep to issue a Recall to ensure safety.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-31
  • VIN: 1C4HJWDG0CL
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: In my 2012 Jeep I had to replace the engine and catalytic converters. The engine number 3 cylinder failed due to excessive ware causing lower compression. After the engine (long block) was replaced, one of the cylinders was miss firing. This miss firing was traced to micro cracks in the plastic/composite intake manifold (original and not part of the engine replacement). Because these micro cracks changed the fuel air ratio on specific cylinders by leaning out the cylinders near the cracks this lean mixture would cause the affected cylinders to run hot that would lead to both the excessive ware on the one cylinder and would comprise the catalytic converters. Because this change in fuel air mixture was caused by the intake manifold and Jeep does not have any inspection requirements or methods for this item and even after the Jeep Dealer did a full diagnosis using their factory specified equipment the issue with the manifold was not found. My local AMMCO shop found the cracking in the manifold that was the route cause of the problem.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-10

  • Summary: Clockspring failed causing airbag to malfunction. Jeep dealer ordered a replacement in April 2023 and still has not received the part(even though they have one in stock the manufacturer will not allow them to use and install the stock clockspring). We have been forced to drive the vehicle without an operating clockspring which creates a major safety hazard since the airbags may not deploy on impact.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-10
  • VIN: 1C4BJWDG3CL
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Revision 6 November 2019 Dealer Service Instructions for: Customer Satisfaction Notification V41Steering Damper 2018 - 2019 (JL) JeepWrangler vehicles front suspension steering damper on about 192,000 of the vehicles may not effectively damp oscillation of the steering system, resulting in a sustained shake or shimmy in the steering wheel. I have a 2012 Wrangler with the same issue - front-end shake/shimmy. My Mechanic said to replace the stabilizer with the next level-up heavier-duty stabilizer from Mopar. Why isn't my Jeep (JK Series) included in this recall? There aren't any of these stabilizers available at Mopar or online due to exceedingly high demand from vehicle owners. This should obviously be a recall.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-26
  • VIN: 1C4BJWDG9CL
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: When the fuel vents on the top of the fuel cell get old, they are extremally brittle. Washboard roads or a pot hole can jar the fuel tank breaking the connectors that go to the emissions system and the rollover valve. If any of these plastic pieces break, there is a chance for fueling problems and effects the drivability of the vehicle. The 3 connector vent is a non-serviceable part, requiring the gas tank to be replaced. The replacement has the same plastic connectors, leaving the possibility for breakage. These connectors breaking can lead to a multitude of issues, including but not limited to fuel spills while filling, leaking fuel from hoses. I have had 2 tanks in my 2012 jku have this issue and a quick search on jeep forums will show that this is not an isolated problem.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-01
  • VIN: 1C4GJWAG2CL
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I noticed that the air bag light came in about 6-12 months ago. I am very concerned because, my Jeep is in excellent shape, however, I transport my 94 yo mom around, so this really bothers me. I have seen several recalls regarding air bags in my model, so I wanted to see if this would be part of one of the recalls. I had my mechanic review and to replace would cost me about $800, which I do not have. If this is due to a failure on Jeeps part, I would like this taken care of.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-13
  • VIN: 1C4BJWDG6CL
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The skid plate assembly that retains the fuel tank is very corroded, corroded to the point of the fuel tank dropping out of the vehicle if not repaired as soon as possible. The other part of this issue is when trying to get this part, there is a backorder of approximately 50 of the skid plate assemblys! This information was provided to me by the Chrysler/ Dodge/ Ram /Jeep Dealership from where we purchased the vehicle new, and that has done all of the repair work on this vehicle since we bought it. The 2 things I find to be very concerning with this issue are the potential fire hazard if, and when a fuel tank were to fall out of the vehicle and the issue of a parts back order appears to show there is an ongoing issue with this very serious situation . Also this vehicle has never been used off-road or for any extreme off-road activities, solely on road use. I did contact Chrysler in regards to my concerns, but other than attempting to get the part shipped sooner, I was told the vehicle is out of warranty and there is no recall on it so there is nothing they can do.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-05
  • VIN: 1C4AJWAG9CL
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Occasionally we would smell gasoline fumes. The occurrence became more frequent to the point we had a mechanic check it out. The mechanic dropped the gas tank and found that there is a steel ring between the tank and the fuel pump flange. This flange had rusted and expanded to the point of cracking the fuel pump flange. Mechanic replaced the flange, seal and fuel pump. I have retained the cracked fuel pump.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-16
  • VIN: 1C4AJWBG5CL
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The vehicle will die while driving it, it is a automatic so you loose power steering power brakes and the engine is completely shut off you have to safely pull over and not get hit to put vehicle in park sometimes it starts in park, sometime it just turns over and you have to wait 10 to 15 minutes for vehicle to start. Dealer keeps telling me there is no issue with the vehicle, and they cannot replicate issue. I fear for me and my family's life every day in my jeep wrangler.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-04
  • VIN: 1C4BJWEG4CL
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I bought a 2012 Jeep Wrangler with 97,000 miles on it in December 2022. It was brought in for service due to some issues with the dash screen lighting, right blinker, and the heater. They first told me that all parts were on back order. I looked up the parts myself as I have a wholesale account and I showed that they were not on back order. I let them know this and conveniently, they were able to get all parts within a week. They called me when the vehicle was done for repairs and when I was driving it home, I noticed that the odometer was off by 23,000 miles. When I drove my vehicle home after having work done, it was at 74,355 miles. The dealership told me to bring it in right away. I brought it in the next day at 4:30pm. After a week, they told me that Chilson's Jeep dealership gave them the wrong information when they were replacing the cluster for the dash lights and they did not reprogram it correctly. They asked me how long I was planning on keeping the vehicle because if I kept it for a while, then I would be okay if I went over the initial 97,000 miles and no one would know. They also gave me the option for them to buy it back. This was on 1/9/23. I called them on 1/11/23 and told them I did not want to keep the vehicle as it was a liability and illegal to roll back an odometer in a vehicle and the title would have to be changed along with other risks that are incorporated with it. I talked to my insurance company and other dealership owners in the area and no one was comfortable with me keeping the vehicle due to legalities and risks associated with this. Chippewa Valley Mazda Sales Managers Adam and Nariah both told me they would only give me the purchase price and would not pay for anything over that. If they bought it back then I would need to come in with the vehicle and a check for over $6,000+. There is an open DOT Investigation on this. Adam stated today, 1/16/23 that they need my vehicle off their lot because it can't stay there and the loaner back

Negative 2012 Jeep Wrangler car reviews

I ordered my Wrangler Rubicon and waited patiently for 6 weeks for it to arrive. Unfortunately, within the first 6 months, I experienced a transmission fuel line issue that caused the fluid to leak. Despite being accused of off-road driving, which was not the case, it was determined that the issue was due to bad line placement. Recently, my vehicle has been in the shop twice in the last 2 weeks due to a check engine light. The mechanics have informed me that they need to replace the entire left head and it will take several days to complete. It is disappointing to have to deal with these issues on an 18-month-old vehicle that is mainly used for family trips and beach outings.

  2. Wilfrid Goldner 2024-09-12

Despite being only 3 years old and garage kept with only 30,000 miles, the door hinges on my Wrangler are all rusting. It is disappointing to hear that I am not the only one experiencing this issue, and even more so that Chrysler (Fiat) is unwilling to fix it. As a former Chrysler/Jeep Technician with 16 years of experience, I can confidently say that this is not acceptable. While this may be my last Wrangler, I have owned over 10 Chrysler vehicles over the years and I am now in the market for a new vehicle. It is unfortunate that the Jeep is not what it used to be.

  3. Kraig Hintz 2024-08-21

This vehicle has had some issues in the past, but I have taken it to the dealer for all recommended maintenance. Despite some delays in warranty approvals, the dealer has always been able to fix the issues. While there have been some check engine light and traction light experiences, the dealer has been able to diagnose and fix the problems. Overall, I would recommend considering other options before purchasing a Chrysler product.

Hi there! I noticed that you've had your item for over 5 years and it's been in for repairs quite a bit. Let's see how we can help you out!

  5. Oda Bartell 2024-07-21

I was looking for an FJ, so I test drove both a 2011 and 2012 Wrangler. Unfortunately, the FJ felt a bit cheap to me. The new 2011 Wrangler had a sluggish engine and the automatic transmission grinded on shifts. However, the 2012 Wrangler really impressed me!

Positive 2012 Jeep Wrangler car reviews

  1. Lucas Ledner 2025-01-09

Congratulations on selling your beloved 97 Wrangler Sport rag top and buying a 2013 Wrangler Sport with the T-Hard Top! Your new Wrangler Sport has almost all the features of a Rubicon, but for $15k less. Although it's missing the electric disconnect on the sway bar and the 4:1 Low range 4WD, it's still a great deal. Who cares about the missing features? The Low range 4WD is still impressive. You even took the back seat out of your last one, and you might do the same with this one too. If you're interested in a Jeep, I recommend going to any dealer with lots of models and comparing features and prices. You can get a loaded Wrangler Sport at a great price compared to a base Sahara or Rubicon - if you don't mind fabric seats. Once you drive one, you'll be hooked!

  2. Richmond Romaguera 2024-10-17

Great job handling the winter weather conditions!

  3. Taylor Hills 2024-10-08

Firstly, congratulations to Chrysler for finally fixing the Wrangler and getting rid of the previous 3.8L V6. However, I do wish that the 6-speed in this vehicle didn't sound like it was struggling with only 22 miles on the odometer. Apart from that, it's a very comfortable and enjoyable ride both on and off the road.

  4. Kendrick Beier 2024-09-13

Looks great, drives fun! Surprisingly, it has a smooth ride around town and is a blast to drive!

  5. Stan Lindgren 2024-08-12

As you may already know, Wranglers are not known for their smooth ride. However, the latest models have made significant improvements to the vehicle's comfort. If you haven't driven one in a while, I highly recommend taking a test ride. Personally, I love my Jeep and I'm so glad I gave it a chance instead of just dismissing it as a 4x4 jeep.
