Ford Mustang problems

The Ford Mustang is a series of American automobiles manufactured by Ford. In continuous production since 1964, the Mustang is currently the longest-produced Ford car nameplate. Currently in its seventh generation, it is the fifth-best selling Ford car nameplate. The namesake of the "pony car" automobile segment, the Mustang was developed as a highly styled line of sporty coupes and convertibles derived from existing model lines, initially distinguished by "long hood, short deck" proportions.
Originally predicted to sell 100,000 vehicles yearly, the 1965 Mustang became the most successful vehicle launch since the 1927 Model A. Introduced on April 17, 1964 (16 days after the Plymouth Barracuda), over 400,000 units were sold in its first year; the one-millionth Mustang was sold within two years of its launch. In August 2018, Ford produced the 10-millionth Mustang; matching the first 1965 Mustang, the vehicle was a 2019 Wimbledon White convertible with a V8 engine.
The success of the Mustang launch led to multiple competitors from other American manufacturers, including the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird (1967), AMC Javelin (1968), and Dodge Challenger (1970). It also competed with the Plymouth Barracuda, which was launched around the same time. The Mustang also had an effect on designs of coupes worldwide, leading to the marketing of the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri in the United States (the latter, by Lincoln-Mercury). The Mercury Cougar was launched in 1967 as a unique-bodied higher-trim alternative to the Mustang; during the 1970s, it included more features and was marketed as a personal luxury car.
From 1965 until 2004, the Mustang shared chassis commonality with other Ford model lines, staying rear-wheel-drive throughout its production. From 1965 to 1973, the Mustang was derived from the 1960 Ford Falcon compact. From 1974 until 1978, the Mustang (denoted Mustang II) was a longer-wheelbase version of the Ford Pinto. From 1979 until 2004, the Mustang shared its Fox platform chassis with 14 other Ford vehicles (becoming the final one to use the Fox architecture). Since 2005, Ford has produced two generations of the Mustang, each using a distinct platform unique to the model line.
Through its production, multiple nameplates have been associated with the Ford Mustang series, including GT, Mach 1, Boss 302/429, Cobra (separate from Shelby Cobra), and Bullitt, along with "5.0" fender badging (denoting 4.9 L OHV or 5.0 L DOHC V8 engines).

Common Ford Mustang problems
The Ford Mustang, a popular muscle car, has been reported to have several common problems that affect its performance and reliability. One of the most common problems is transmission issues, particularly during gear shifting. Some owners have reported that the transmission fails to perform properly during gear shifting, causing the engine to stall or die. This issue is particularly prevalent in older model years, but has also been reported in newer models.
Another common problem is engine-related issues, including oil leaks and rough idling. The 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine, in particular, has been reported to have oil leaks, which can cause the engine to run poorly or even fail. Additionally, some owners have reported rough idling and electronic throttle issues, which can make the car difficult to drive.
Braking system faults are also a common problem in the Ford Mustang. These issues include unlubricated caliper guide pins and damage to the brake pedal bracket, which can cause the brakes to fail or perform poorly. Ford has recognized these issues and initiated recalls to address them.
Airbag system faults are another common problem in the Ford Mustang, with over three million units of the 2006 model year being recalled due to airbag problems. The passenger frontal airbag inflator has been reported to rupture easily, which can result in metal particles striking the occupants and causing injuries. Additionally, there have been reports of side airbags not deploying when needed.
Finally, battery drainage is a common problem in the Ford Mustang, affecting both older and newer iterations. Power drain on the battery can be caused by loose or damaged connections, parasitic drain, or improper battery installation. This can cause the battery to fail to charge or put out enough current to turn the starter, making the car difficult to start.
In summary, the Ford Mustang has several common problems that affect its performance and reliability. These include transmission issues, engine-related problems, braking system faults, airbag system faults, and battery drainage. While the Mustang is generally reliable, these issues can cause significant problems for owners and may require costly repairs. It is important for Mustang owners to be aware of these common problems and to address them promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicle.
Are Ford Mustangs reliable?

Are Mustangs high maintenance?
Ford Mustang Maintenance Costs
A Ford Mustang will cost about $7,093 for maintenance and repairs during its first 10 years of service. This beats the industry average for popular coupe models by $330. There is also a 20.79% chance that a Mustang will require a major repair during that time.

Ford Mustang 2024
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-09
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-23
- VIN: 1FA6P8THXR5
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I visited the [XXX] in Greensboro, NC on [XXX], was inside the Y for around five minutes, and when I came out and got back to my car, the car would not start, the battery was completely dead. I called USAA Road Service, they came and said I had a very discharged battery. They helped me get the car started, and I got home OK. I do not know what caused the battery to fail. After the battery failed, It was inspected on July 9, 2024 by Green Ford in Greensboro, and then replaced by the Ford dealer. My safety was at risk because the dealer said the faulty battery probably was responsible for an accelerator problem I am experiencing (detailed in NHTSA complaint number 11619861) and a brake failure which I experienced (detailed in NHTSA complaint number 11619933). The Ford dealer that said the battery was defective, and as I said, replaced it (under the car's warranty). There was no warning that the battery would fail, and I do not know why it failed, and had no reason to believe it would fail. If the Ford dealer kept the failed battery, and still has it, it should be available for inspection upon request. - Summary: –In the Owner’s Manual, there are numerous items of information not related to this car. By that, I don't mean a different variation (SL vs Rt). I mean it tells you to push buttons that do not exist. For example, in "visual mode", reviewing the steering wheel. –The Owner’s Manual says to accept a call, press the phone button on the steering wheel – no such button exists. The Owner’s Manual says to hang up a call, press the phone button. Again no such button. You can not say end call during a call– so no voice modes work in call mode. THIS FORCES YOU TO INTERACT WITH CAR BY REMOVING A HAND FROM STEERING WHEEL–THUS VIOLATING Florida Statute 316.305 -- Another example- Using visual, it points to a button on the wrong side of the wheel. If you click on the “G” represented on the bottom right of the steering wheel it shows “mode” buttons. Mode on the actual wheel is on the left hand side. This is just one example of several items in the manual that don’t match the actual car. Plus you have to “know” the correct terminology to search. In a paper manual you can normally get close and thumb through a few pages to find the right things– without that capability if you don’t know the exact wording you are lost. ---There are also numerous customizable setting that do not hold after “saving”. While these may not be safety issues themselves—the amount of interaction this vehicle requires to figure out “what now?”, Is a distraction and may cause accidents. Pics are of the owners manual installed on the car (we no longer get printed versions). 2 screens telling you to end call with buttons on steering wheel. @ pics of all buttons on the wheel. 1 pic of wheel layout according to installed manual (which doesn't match the actual wheel) ---According to Dealer the vehicle's software is up to date with current version.

Ford Mustang 2021
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-18
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-19
- VIN: 1FATP8UH6M5
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: At idle the engine idles roughly and rotates randomly at speeds from 300 to 900 RPM. When starting from a stop such as a traffic light or when pulling onto a roadway hesitation is often noted and on several occasions this has resulted in near accidents as the vehicle won't proceed as required to move through an intersection.
Ford Mustang 2012
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-14
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-16
- VIN: 1ZVBP8CF3C5
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Transmission seems to lose power while driving, the car will barely pull itself but the rpms increase if I accelerate. This has happened several times while driving and occasionally there are dash lights lighting and speedometer/gas gauge doesn’t work but that doesn’t happen every time. When it happens I pull over and shut it down and restart and it runs correctly until it happens again! I do a lot of highway driving and the car just “falling flat” on a multi-lane highway at 70+ mph is definitely a safety issue! I have taken it to my local fastlane shop and the car was driven but didn’t malfunction at that time. He advised me to try to drive it there if it happened again, but I have never been close to the shop at the times it happens or they are closed. There is no advance warning, it happens at various speeds and even on takeoff after stopping for traffic lights. I once was pulling into traffic when it happened and didn’t have enough power to get to my lane before it fell flat! Fortunately I could back up before getting hit by oncoming traffic.
Ford Mustang 2024
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-03
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-15
- VIN: 1FA6P8THXR5
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I was slowly backing out of a parking space at the Circle K gas station on July 3, 2024, on Battleground Avenue in Greensboro, NC, and applied the brakes when the warning alert sounded that there was cross traffic. I immediately applied the brakes, but to no avail. Application of the car's brakes, pumping the brakes, had no effect on stopping the backward motion the car. The car continued to roll backwards, and I very nearly collided with a car sweeping past the rear of my car, when I could not stop. When I drove to Green Ford on July 9, 2024 and told the dealership what happened (along with an accelerator problem, which I reported separately on incident report number 11619861), the dealership inspected my car and said the failed brakes (along with the accelerator problem) could have caused by a defective battery, which the dealership then replaced under the car's warrenty. The safety of everyone in the car could have been affected had a collision occurred, especially if the car's gas tank had been damaged in a collision, and if a fire had resulted.
Ford Mustang 2024
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-03
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-15
- VIN: 1FA6P8THXR5
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: From a stop at a traffic light on [XXX], I made a right turn from [XXX] onto [XXX] in Greensboro NC, and after turning, the car did not respond when I pressed on the accelerator so as to go with the traffic. Instead, the car gradually slowed down. Before the car rolled to a stop in the middle of the road, the engine caught on and the car speeded up normally. The risk is that I would become stopped in the middle of a busy road and that someone rear end into me. If this problem were to occur as I was entering onto an interstate highway, where traffic routinely moves along at 70 mph and more, it would not be good. I took my car to Green Ford, the local dealership, on July 9, 2024. They found a defective battery (which was replaced under the car's warranty), and the dealership said the problems (accelerator and also brakes) were likely caused by a defective battery. (At the same visit the dealership also examined my brakes, which had failed, and which I am describing in a separate incident report). The accelerator problem occurred again on [XXX] when I pulled out of my apartment parking lot onto [XXX] , and after turning onto [XXX] , the car gradually started to slow down, and would have come to a stop. I pushed on the accelerator repeatedly and the car, before stopping, got up to speed (the speed limit is 35 mph on [XXX] ). The next day, on October 8, 2024, at the Green Ford dealership, the dealership could find nothing wrong with the car. On [XXX], on the way downtown (to the Ford Dealership) I experienced the accelerator problem several tines. The dealership did not examine the car again, but advised me to keep detailed notes for a week and after a week report back to them. . - Summary: I purchased this car from Trent Family Auto on May 2, 2024. On September 11, 2024 the engine failed. While working on replacing the engine I found an open recall. This is safety related and was never mentioned to me by the dealership. So aside from selling me a bad "as is" they sold me an unsafe vehicle. A vehicle my family has ridden in several times since the purchase. In regard to the recall when I reached out to them about the engine replacement cost they stated recalls can only be taken care of by manufacturing dealerships. Shouldn't they have some ownership to inform customer buying an unsafe vehicle there is an open recall? Thank your for checking into this matter.

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-14
- VIN: 1FA6P8TH1G5
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Ford currently has a TSB (15-0192 idle smoking) out on the Ford Mustang, specifically my car. They know it is an issue, and that several people are having problems with it. But they are not considering it a recall. These cars are having heavy amounts of smoke residuals, which is both damaging to the environment, and to people’s respiratory care as it is blowing major amounts of smoke in the air, and therefore cannot pass an emissions test in my state of Virginia specifically. I believe that Ford knows this is an issue and it should be considered a recall based on current Efficiency and energy standards for vehicles.

- Summary: I AM UNABLE TO UNLOCK MY DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR FROM THE OUTSIDE. I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN, CONSIDERING I AM A SINGLE WOMAN LIVING IN THE CITY. THE DOOR WILL NOT OPEN WITH THE HANDLE OR THE KEY FOB. I HAVE TO WALK AROUND TO THE PASSENGER SIDE AND REACH THROUGH THE VEHICLE TO OPEN THE DOOR. WHEN TRYING TO RESEARCH THE ISSUE, I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL FORUMS WHERE OTHERS ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. MY 2017 FORD MUSTANG HAS HAD SEVERAL ELECTRICAL ISSUES THAT HAS NOT MADE IT TO THE RECALL LIST. SUCH AS THE HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEM, THE BACK UP CAMERA, AND THE CONNECTIVITY OF THE USB PORT AND SYNC. I AM NEED OF ASSISTANCE IN GETTING THE ISSUE WITH MY DOOR FIXED. I KNOW THAT IT ISN'T A SAFETY ISSUE SUCH AS A RISK WHILE DRIVING, ALTHOUGH, IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE FOR MY SAFETY WELL BEING.
Ford Mustang 2024
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-10
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-13
- VIN: 1FA6P8TH4R5
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The front wheels of the vehicle have different breaks - this is a factory fault (Manufacturing defect). The front right wheel has 6 piston brembo brake and the left front wheel has 4 piston caliper brakes, causing vehicle to put different braking power on both side - causing it to slid to the right side while breakin (The right wheel producing more breaking power than the left side). This is a safety hazard for me and public, the dealership I bought this car had run their own inspection before selling it to me but they passed the inspection which means they ignore this major fault. Even before that, this vehicle passed the PDI (pre-delivery inspection) at the ford production plant and the dealership sold it to me. Its been 3 months and I experienced vibration on the front left wheel and slid towards the right side on the highway and noticed the brakes are different. This is a big issue, safety hazard, public safety risk and I went through a lot once I found this issue.

Vehicle year: 2004
I was lucky enough to find a 2004 Mach 1 in Competition Orange with less than 5kmi, a true classic! This is coming full circle for me as my first car was a 1969 Mach 1 in high school. I have also owned a 1985 GT and a 1993 Cobra. Even by today's standards, the power on the Mach 1 is impressive. However, the very low gearing makes it feel even faster. The stiff springs, factory installed subframe connectors, and stiff Tokico gas shocks make for a punishing ride on the poor roads we have in the US now, but the payoff is the amazingly tight handling, which is very rewarding. The shaker hood is a great heritage touch and the reason why the Mach 1 is so popular then and now. The engine is another reason for its continued favor and collectability, as it was a Mach1-only engine, never used in another car. The 5-speed cars also get a forged crank, with a much higher redline of 6,700 rpm. In summary, the Mach 1 is a forever classic thanks to its looks, handling, and engine.

Vehicle year: 1998
I drove by a dealership and saw a black Mustang that caught my eye. I asked to see it, and the guys started it. I fell in love! The rumble beats a Harley, and I can drive a car! This was my 15-year-old daughter's dream car, and I had no idea until I heard that rumble. There is no sweeter sound. She is fast and furious and a great car. Male friends wanted to race at my age, so I got chrome that says 'size matters' and put it under the GT 4.6LT on the side. It looks like it was made that way, and in the back window, it reads in vinyl 'STEP ASIDE BOYS.' This has been fun! Like no other car I have had! I'm worried about the snow; I've heard they are bad in snow! This is a must-have car! It's awesome!

Vehicle year: 2007
Hi there! I just wanted to share how much I adore my 2007 Mustang GT Premium with the Premium Trim Package. It's a sleek black beauty that's incredibly well-built and handles like a dream. I've wanted a Mustang since I was just 6 years old, and this car has exceeded all my expectations. It's won countless awards and is the longest American muscle car line, which is just amazing. I haven't put too many miles on it yet, but every time I get behind the wheel, I'm reminded of why I fell in love with it in the first place. One of the things I love most about it is the wide range of aftermarket options available - I even had a Shaker 1000 installed and it's just incredible. I also added a tower brace and Holly 4.6 Nitrous, which have made it even more of a joy to drive. I can't recommend this car enough! Best regards, Townsley

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2008 Mustang GT. So far, I've driven it for 20,000 miles and I'm happy to report that I haven't had any problems. While I was hoping for a bit more acceleration, I have to say that these Mustangs really do put you back in your seat much better than the V6. Additionally, I really like the interior of this model compared to the previous 99-04 version. However, I have to admit that the seats can be a bit uncomfortable, especially on long trips. As for the back seat, it may look uncomfortable, but it's actually not too bad. Thanks for listening!

What a great car! I'm really impressed with the vastly improved handling compared to the 03 model I test drove a few years ago. The power and sound are both fantastic. As someone who has previously owned Corvettes, I can confidently say that this Mustang compares very favorably, especially considering the price. The only downside is that the spoiler interferes with visibility, but that's a minor issue. I'm also pleasantly surprised by the gas mileage - I'm getting over 18 MPG in stop and go traffic, which is really good for a car with this kind of power. I do think that the ride quality could be improved with the 17

I bought my car new and after driving it for 20,000 miles, I started experiencing difficulty keeping it on the road. I took it in for a front alignment and bought new tires, but the problem persisted. Now, with 60,000 miles on it, the car felt like it was out to get me. I took it back and discovered that the right and left lower control arms needed to be replaced, along with a rear main seal transmission leak and an oil leak. I also had to have an idler pulley replaced. Even after all of these repairs, I still have a slight problem with pulling to the right. Thank goodness for extended warranties - you're going to need it!

I purchased this car on April 15, 2017 after waiting for two years. I opted for a CPO purchase to benefit from the extended warranty and avoid the 40% depreciation for the first three years. It turns out that my decision was the right one. The car had 28600 miles when I bought it and the price was just right. This Mustang GT has every option except for the 50 year appearance package and recaro seats, including the PP, NAV, Shaker Pro Sound System, Adaptive Cruise, Pre Collision Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, and much more. Here's what I love about the car: 1. It has a strong presence and is fun to drive on open roads. 2. For a PP car, it is comfortable and performs very well on the open road. The ride quality suffers on bad roads, but the seats make up for it. 3. The Shaker Pro Audio is fantastic, and I find that Amazon Prime has the highest quality audio source. 4. The seating position and ergonomics are excellent, with properly placed controls and good visibility. Here's what I don't like: 1. The formula is correct, but the quality of execution is lacking. Even though this is the first year for the model, there is no excuse for the overall quality. 2. The paint chips easily. 3. Panel fitment should be better, especially for hood and bumper alignment. 4. Reliability is a concern. 5. The Ford dealerships in my area do not have a good service department, and I have to drive 30 miles for service even though there is a dealership less than two miles away from my work. The experience is a story in and of itself. 6. The clutch pedal is heavy. 7. The front seats don't cool as well as they should, only the bottom half cools. I have had some problems with the car, but overall I am satisfied with my purchase.During the first week of ownership, my car would cut off while driving and when I came to a stop. I even have a video of it and sent the information to my wife and kids in case of a bad accident. I had to press the dealership in my area, which is less than two miles away, to address the issue. Unfortunately, after picking up my recently purchased CPO vehicle, it stopped before I even arrived home. It was after closing, so I was not happy. Another issue I faced was with the clutch pedal linkage, which kept coming loose from the pedal. It took a solid week for the dealership to correct this condition, and I don't know why. Additionally, the mirrors and seats have a memory option, but when I went to get in the car, the mirrors would move, lose memory, and constantly click. This problem was documented when I got the car, but the dealership did not want to fix it. When they finally did, they wanted to charge me, but I insisted they should not because it is a documented ongoing problem. Finally, the service manager waived the charge, but stormed off like a child, which left me feeling unhappy. There were also issues with leaking valve cover gaskets, a broken trunk wire harness, and a faulty AC evaporator coil and compressor, which were all covered under warranty. However, when the service adviser implied that someone may have worked on the car, I immediately told them not to make statements they couldn't prove. I don't appreciate being falsely accused. Despite all these issues, I did not fight with the dealership. Instead, I decided to drive 30 miles to the dealership where I purchased the vehicle, and the service was great. They even replaced the door handles under warranty, which had to do with the key-less entry, and the back-up camera, which was filling up with water. That's my life with this car at 32000 miles of ownership. Do you think there's a quality issue? The things that have been problems are not new technology unique to this vehicle. It's a company issue. I recently test drove the new 2019 Mustang and it felt great, with a light clutch pedal. However, based on my current experience, I cannot justify buying another one. I was considering a Lexus RC-F, but changed my mind as I don't want to spend $100K on a V8 powered car. There are plenty of other options such as a Challenger or Corvette. In March of 2021, I traded Bruce Lee in on a 2020 Mustang GT Premium, PP, Automatic, Digital Instrument Cluster, a $50,000 car. Let me tell you, there is a major difference. I've had the car for 7 months now and it's an absolute blast to drive. The experience in the 2015 was good but it could have been better. Overall, the 2020 Mustang is a major step forward. The suspension on the performance pack is much better and the power to weight ratio is perfect, providing enough power for any situation. I'm really enjoying the 10-speed automatic. Some people may not know that driving the car in performance mode makes it more aggressive and shifts very hard, which is exactly what you want. In normal mode, the shifts are much softer and barely noticeable. The best part is that it holds its value very well.

Hi there! I purchased my car on 4/17 with 98K and I've been wanting a V6 5-sp, '05-'09 vintage for years. The engine is great - it sounds good, has great mileage, and good power. I pride myself on smooth take-off and gear changes, but I have to admit that the transmission is a bit tricky to use. The difference between idle and 4000 rpm is about 1/8

I purchased this car new in 1994 and loved it from the start. It has been a reliable and good performer. Although, I must admit that the transmission has been replaced twice, mostly due to my own negligence.

I purchased my GT with 95k miles and it has been a reliable car for me. Although it has had some issues, such as the recall intake manifold which was a bit of a hassle to replace, I have only had minor annoyances like x4 O2 sensors, all 4 calipers and rotors replaced, new intake manifold (due to a coolant leak), door hinge, cruise control went out, lower control arms, ball joints, and recently the steering column. Overall, I would rate the build quality reliability as a 3 out of 5. It's not perfect, but it has served me well.
