Ford Mustang problems

The Ford Mustang is a series of American automobiles manufactured by Ford. In continuous production since 1964, the Mustang is currently the longest-produced Ford car nameplate. Currently in its seventh generation, it is the fifth-best selling Ford car nameplate. The namesake of the "pony car" automobile segment, the Mustang was developed as a highly styled line of sporty coupes and convertibles derived from existing model lines, initially distinguished by "long hood, short deck" proportions.
Originally predicted to sell 100,000 vehicles yearly, the 1965 Mustang became the most successful vehicle launch since the 1927 Model A. Introduced on April 17, 1964 (16 days after the Plymouth Barracuda), over 400,000 units were sold in its first year; the one-millionth Mustang was sold within two years of its launch. In August 2018, Ford produced the 10-millionth Mustang; matching the first 1965 Mustang, the vehicle was a 2019 Wimbledon White convertible with a V8 engine.
The success of the Mustang launch led to multiple competitors from other American manufacturers, including the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird (1967), AMC Javelin (1968), and Dodge Challenger (1970). It also competed with the Plymouth Barracuda, which was launched around the same time. The Mustang also had an effect on designs of coupes worldwide, leading to the marketing of the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri in the United States (the latter, by Lincoln-Mercury). The Mercury Cougar was launched in 1967 as a unique-bodied higher-trim alternative to the Mustang; during the 1970s, it included more features and was marketed as a personal luxury car.
From 1965 until 2004, the Mustang shared chassis commonality with other Ford model lines, staying rear-wheel-drive throughout its production. From 1965 to 1973, the Mustang was derived from the 1960 Ford Falcon compact. From 1974 until 1978, the Mustang (denoted Mustang II) was a longer-wheelbase version of the Ford Pinto. From 1979 until 2004, the Mustang shared its Fox platform chassis with 14 other Ford vehicles (becoming the final one to use the Fox architecture). Since 2005, Ford has produced two generations of the Mustang, each using a distinct platform unique to the model line.
Through its production, multiple nameplates have been associated with the Ford Mustang series, including GT, Mach 1, Boss 302/429, Cobra (separate from Shelby Cobra), and Bullitt, along with "5.0" fender badging (denoting 4.9 L OHV or 5.0 L DOHC V8 engines).

Common Ford Mustang problems
The Ford Mustang, a popular muscle car, has been reported to have several common problems that affect its performance and reliability. One of the most common problems is transmission issues, particularly during gear shifting. Some owners have reported that the transmission fails to perform properly during gear shifting, causing the engine to stall or die. This issue is particularly prevalent in older model years, but has also been reported in newer models.
Another common problem is engine-related issues, including oil leaks and rough idling. The 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine, in particular, has been reported to have oil leaks, which can cause the engine to run poorly or even fail. Additionally, some owners have reported rough idling and electronic throttle issues, which can make the car difficult to drive.
Braking system faults are also a common problem in the Ford Mustang. These issues include unlubricated caliper guide pins and damage to the brake pedal bracket, which can cause the brakes to fail or perform poorly. Ford has recognized these issues and initiated recalls to address them.
Airbag system faults are another common problem in the Ford Mustang, with over three million units of the 2006 model year being recalled due to airbag problems. The passenger frontal airbag inflator has been reported to rupture easily, which can result in metal particles striking the occupants and causing injuries. Additionally, there have been reports of side airbags not deploying when needed.
Finally, battery drainage is a common problem in the Ford Mustang, affecting both older and newer iterations. Power drain on the battery can be caused by loose or damaged connections, parasitic drain, or improper battery installation. This can cause the battery to fail to charge or put out enough current to turn the starter, making the car difficult to start.
In summary, the Ford Mustang has several common problems that affect its performance and reliability. These include transmission issues, engine-related problems, braking system faults, airbag system faults, and battery drainage. While the Mustang is generally reliable, these issues can cause significant problems for owners and may require costly repairs. It is important for Mustang owners to be aware of these common problems and to address them promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicle.
Are Ford Mustangs reliable?
The Ford Mustang is generally reliable, getting a 3.5 out of 5.0 from RepairPal and 85/100 from J.D. Power. The Mustang is known to have issues with its radio display, driveshaft, paint, and camshaft position sensor, among other problems.
Are Mustangs high maintenance?
Ford Mustang Maintenance Costs
A Ford Mustang will cost about $7,093 for maintenance and repairs during its first 10 years of service. This beats the industry average for popular coupe models by $330. There is also a 20.79% chance that a Mustang will require a major repair during that time.

Ford Mustang 2024
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-09
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-23
- VIN: 1FA6P8THXR5
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I visited the [XXX] in Greensboro, NC on [XXX], was inside the Y for around five minutes, and when I came out and got back to my car, the car would not start, the battery was completely dead. I called USAA Road Service, they came and said I had a very discharged battery. They helped me get the car started, and I got home OK. I do not know what caused the battery to fail. After the battery failed, It was inspected on July 9, 2024 by Green Ford in Greensboro, and then replaced by the Ford dealer. My safety was at risk because the dealer said the faulty battery probably was responsible for an accelerator problem I am experiencing (detailed in NHTSA complaint number 11619861) and a brake failure which I experienced (detailed in NHTSA complaint number 11619933). The Ford dealer that said the battery was defective, and as I said, replaced it (under the car's warranty). There was no warning that the battery would fail, and I do not know why it failed, and had no reason to believe it would fail. If the Ford dealer kept the failed battery, and still has it, it should be available for inspection upon request. - Summary: –In the Owner’s Manual, there are numerous items of information not related to this car. By that, I don't mean a different variation (SL vs Rt). I mean it tells you to push buttons that do not exist. For example, in "visual mode", reviewing the steering wheel. –The Owner’s Manual says to accept a call, press the phone button on the steering wheel – no such button exists. The Owner’s Manual says to hang up a call, press the phone button. Again no such button. You can not say end call during a call– so no voice modes work in call mode. THIS FORCES YOU TO INTERACT WITH CAR BY REMOVING A HAND FROM STEERING WHEEL–THUS VIOLATING Florida Statute 316.305 -- Another example- Using visual, it points to a button on the wrong side of the wheel. If you click on the “G” represented on the bottom right of the steering wheel it shows “mode” buttons. Mode on the actual wheel is on the left hand side. This is just one example of several items in the manual that don’t match the actual car. Plus you have to “know” the correct terminology to search. In a paper manual you can normally get close and thumb through a few pages to find the right things– without that capability if you don’t know the exact wording you are lost. ---There are also numerous customizable setting that do not hold after “saving”. While these may not be safety issues themselves—the amount of interaction this vehicle requires to figure out “what now?”, Is a distraction and may cause accidents. Pics are of the owners manual installed on the car (we no longer get printed versions). 2 screens telling you to end call with buttons on steering wheel. @ pics of all buttons on the wheel. 1 pic of wheel layout according to installed manual (which doesn't match the actual wheel) ---According to Dealer the vehicle's software is up to date with current version.

Ford Mustang 2021
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-18
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-19
- VIN: 1FATP8UH6M5
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: At idle the engine idles roughly and rotates randomly at speeds from 300 to 900 RPM. When starting from a stop such as a traffic light or when pulling onto a roadway hesitation is often noted and on several occasions this has resulted in near accidents as the vehicle won't proceed as required to move through an intersection.
Ford Mustang 2012
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-14
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-16
- VIN: 1ZVBP8CF3C5
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Transmission seems to lose power while driving, the car will barely pull itself but the rpms increase if I accelerate. This has happened several times while driving and occasionally there are dash lights lighting and speedometer/gas gauge doesn’t work but that doesn’t happen every time. When it happens I pull over and shut it down and restart and it runs correctly until it happens again! I do a lot of highway driving and the car just “falling flat” on a multi-lane highway at 70+ mph is definitely a safety issue! I have taken it to my local fastlane shop and the car was driven but didn’t malfunction at that time. He advised me to try to drive it there if it happened again, but I have never been close to the shop at the times it happens or they are closed. There is no advance warning, it happens at various speeds and even on takeoff after stopping for traffic lights. I once was pulling into traffic when it happened and didn’t have enough power to get to my lane before it fell flat! Fortunately I could back up before getting hit by oncoming traffic.
Ford Mustang 2024
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-03
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-15
- VIN: 1FA6P8THXR5
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I was slowly backing out of a parking space at the Circle K gas station on July 3, 2024, on Battleground Avenue in Greensboro, NC, and applied the brakes when the warning alert sounded that there was cross traffic. I immediately applied the brakes, but to no avail. Application of the car's brakes, pumping the brakes, had no effect on stopping the backward motion the car. The car continued to roll backwards, and I very nearly collided with a car sweeping past the rear of my car, when I could not stop. When I drove to Green Ford on July 9, 2024 and told the dealership what happened (along with an accelerator problem, which I reported separately on incident report number 11619861), the dealership inspected my car and said the failed brakes (along with the accelerator problem) could have caused by a defective battery, which the dealership then replaced under the car's warrenty. The safety of everyone in the car could have been affected had a collision occurred, especially if the car's gas tank had been damaged in a collision, and if a fire had resulted.
Ford Mustang 2024
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-03
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-15
- VIN: 1FA6P8THXR5
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: From a stop at a traffic light on [XXX], I made a right turn from [XXX] onto [XXX] in Greensboro NC, and after turning, the car did not respond when I pressed on the accelerator so as to go with the traffic. Instead, the car gradually slowed down. Before the car rolled to a stop in the middle of the road, the engine caught on and the car speeded up normally. The risk is that I would become stopped in the middle of a busy road and that someone rear end into me. If this problem were to occur as I was entering onto an interstate highway, where traffic routinely moves along at 70 mph and more, it would not be good. I took my car to Green Ford, the local dealership, on July 9, 2024. They found a defective battery (which was replaced under the car's warranty), and the dealership said the problems (accelerator and also brakes) were likely caused by a defective battery. (At the same visit the dealership also examined my brakes, which had failed, and which I am describing in a separate incident report). The accelerator problem occurred again on [XXX] when I pulled out of my apartment parking lot onto [XXX] , and after turning onto [XXX] , the car gradually started to slow down, and would have come to a stop. I pushed on the accelerator repeatedly and the car, before stopping, got up to speed (the speed limit is 35 mph on [XXX] ). The next day, on October 8, 2024, at the Green Ford dealership, the dealership could find nothing wrong with the car. On [XXX], on the way downtown (to the Ford Dealership) I experienced the accelerator problem several tines. The dealership did not examine the car again, but advised me to keep detailed notes for a week and after a week report back to them. . - Summary: I purchased this car from Trent Family Auto on May 2, 2024. On September 11, 2024 the engine failed. While working on replacing the engine I found an open recall. This is safety related and was never mentioned to me by the dealership. So aside from selling me a bad "as is" they sold me an unsafe vehicle. A vehicle my family has ridden in several times since the purchase. In regard to the recall when I reached out to them about the engine replacement cost they stated recalls can only be taken care of by manufacturing dealerships. Shouldn't they have some ownership to inform customer buying an unsafe vehicle there is an open recall? Thank your for checking into this matter.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-30
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-14
- VIN: 1FA6P8TH1G5
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Ford currently has a TSB (15-0192 idle smoking) out on the Ford Mustang, specifically my car. They know it is an issue, and that several people are having problems with it. But they are not considering it a recall. These cars are having heavy amounts of smoke residuals, which is both damaging to the environment, and to people’s respiratory care as it is blowing major amounts of smoke in the air, and therefore cannot pass an emissions test in my state of Virginia specifically. I believe that Ford knows this is an issue and it should be considered a recall based on current Efficiency and energy standards for vehicles.

- Summary: I AM UNABLE TO UNLOCK MY DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR FROM THE OUTSIDE. I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN, CONSIDERING I AM A SINGLE WOMAN LIVING IN THE CITY. THE DOOR WILL NOT OPEN WITH THE HANDLE OR THE KEY FOB. I HAVE TO WALK AROUND TO THE PASSENGER SIDE AND REACH THROUGH THE VEHICLE TO OPEN THE DOOR. WHEN TRYING TO RESEARCH THE ISSUE, I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL FORUMS WHERE OTHERS ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. MY 2017 FORD MUSTANG HAS HAD SEVERAL ELECTRICAL ISSUES THAT HAS NOT MADE IT TO THE RECALL LIST. SUCH AS THE HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEM, THE BACK UP CAMERA, AND THE CONNECTIVITY OF THE USB PORT AND SYNC. I AM NEED OF ASSISTANCE IN GETTING THE ISSUE WITH MY DOOR FIXED. I KNOW THAT IT ISN'T A SAFETY ISSUE SUCH AS A RISK WHILE DRIVING, ALTHOUGH, IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE FOR MY SAFETY WELL BEING.
Ford Mustang 2024
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-10
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-13
- VIN: 1FA6P8TH4R5
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The front wheels of the vehicle have different breaks - this is a factory fault (Manufacturing defect). The front right wheel has 6 piston brembo brake and the left front wheel has 4 piston caliper brakes, causing vehicle to put different braking power on both side - causing it to slid to the right side while breakin (The right wheel producing more breaking power than the left side). This is a safety hazard for me and public, the dealership I bought this car had run their own inspection before selling it to me but they passed the inspection which means they ignore this major fault. Even before that, this vehicle passed the PDI (pre-delivery inspection) at the ford production plant and the dealership sold it to me. Its been 3 months and I experienced vibration on the front left wheel and slid towards the right side on the highway and noticed the brakes are different. This is a big issue, safety hazard, public safety risk and I went through a lot once I found this issue.

- Summary: Began over last month with difficulty or rough engine start in mornings Then engine overheated once and continues to lose coolant without visible sign of any leakage. Scan error codes P0300, P 0303, P 0304. Now with excessive steam/smoke out tail pipe when it’s started. Took to mechanic where they verified engine coolant is in atleast, cylinder #3. My safety and that of others is the engine can fail or completely break or explode while driving, causing failure to be able to control vehicle, possibly resulting in a crash or even death.

I love my mustang. It's been a great experience compared to my previous cars. The purchasing process was a breeze and the driving itself is simply amazing.

Vehicle year: 2021
This car is a great deal for those who want the muscle car experience without spending a fortune. As someone who has owned five Mustangs, I can confidently say that this is the best one yet. I absolutely love the look and feel of the performance package, and the Safe and Smart package keeps insurance costs reasonable. The exhaust package is a must-have as well. With over 100 cars owned, this Mustang easily makes it into my top 10.

Vehicle year: 2008
My wife and I ordered this Mustang to our specifications, and I have to say it was the right choice. Ford offers the same price whether you buy off the lot or customize your car, so why not get exactly what you want? Living in Pittsburgh, I have had to drive the car several times in snowy and icy conditions, and it handles as well as a rear-wheel-drive sports car can (with a few cinder blocks in the trunk). The dealer warned me that the 8-cylinder would not perform well, and I can now confirm that he was right. I absolutely love driving this car, and it looks stunning in Grabber Orange with the Pony Package added. We also opted for the ambient lighting, MobileEaze, and interior upgrade package, and I must say that the accessories are well worth the price. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Vehicle year: 1990
I am the second owner of a 47K mile 1985 5.0 LX vert. I absolutely love this car! While I drive a Chevy Volt daily, this Mustang is my weekend cruiser for nice weather. It has had a bunch of upgrades and a few things removed, making it a classic that will never have to be smogged again. Admittedly, by today's standards, it is not the most efficient or safe car out there, and the fit and finish from day one was not great. Unfortunately, many of these cars rusted quickly and there are not many left that are either original or were well-maintained. The convertibles are especially prone to chassis twist due to torque, and there are quite a few out there that are permanently bent. However, what makes these cars great is their simplicity. Anyone can pick up a cheap set of tools and wrench on these cars, and the parts are affordable. With less than $1000, you can put together a junkyard 500+HP build. Mechanically, they are pretty much bulletproof and are very easy to fix when they break. That being said, these are not cars you buy to daily drive anymore, unless you are a kid who has the time to work on them weekly to fix things and does not care about safety or fuel costs. All this being said, the sound of the old small block 5.0 is absolutely intoxicating. The grunt when you lift off the clutch and the gear engages, and the RPMs rise is what draws motorheads to these cars, and the reason mine will be mine until I die. For anyone checking reviews for a Fox body Mustang they want to buy, here is a brief list: 1. They do rust, but the worst places are generally at the lower portions of the strut towers where the weld is to the frame rails in the engine bay. If they are rusted, unless this is a low number car like an original Saleen, I would just walk away. 2. The rear main seals are notorious for leaking, but this is a cheap part. Just be prepared for a new clutch and all the additional parts that will likely need to be replaced when you take the transmission off to get it out. 3.Valve cover gaskets were cork, so they are probably shot too. The intake manifold gaskets tend to leak out of the rear, which can look like a rear main seal, but they are actually cheap and easy to fix, even for a novice. Oil pan gaskets also tend to leak and are not fun to change. You generally have to lift the engine about 3 inches to clear the cross member, and it's important to fix the leak to prevent burning off the collectors off the exhaust. Every vacuum line under the hood is likely dry rotted by now, so you will likely have to re-plumb every line or make the choice to go carb and get rid of all the clutter of lines. If it is a vert, keep in mind that body rust can be an issue, especially in the doors. Electrical systems are generally solid if the car is stock. Exhausts, although they were stainless, are likely also shot by now and may need to be replaced. Convertible tops can be expensive at around 1200.00. If you have a convertible, it's worth installing frame connectors to stop the flex and rattling. Suspension parts are generally cheap, easy to find, and easy to replace. Aside from the listed items above, anyone looking to buy one of these should check the forums first as they generally have classifieds of these for sale, and most of them listed on those sites have been well taken care of.

Congratulations on your new purchase! Your 1998 Gt Convertible sounds like a real gem with only 27,750 miles on it. It's great to hear that it has been well-maintained and garage kept. I agree that it's always a good idea to replace the tires after a certain amount of time, even if they still have decent tread. It's wonderful that you were able to find such a reliable car with easy-to-find parts. Thank you for the recommendation and good luck with your new ride!

My wife purchased the Ecoboost Premium version of the 2016 Mustang as her everyday commute car. At first, everything was perfect. The car drives great and has good responsive handling. The acceleration when fully stepping on the pedal is just fun. However, we encountered a problem on a hot summer morning when the AC started to act really strange. It was blowing hot air on the driver's side and warm air on the passenger's side. We took it to the dealer to fix it, which took a couple of days for them to finish replacing the Evaporator (That's what they said had failed). We had to go through the hassle of driving to another location for a rental car, as the dealer did not have any loaners on the lot, which wasted a lot of our time and caused inconvenience. After it was fixed, it worked for another 2 or 3 months. Unfortunately, last week, the AC started to blow hot air again. We took it to the dealer AGAIN, and this time it took them 3 days to fix it, and they told us the problem was the Evaporator AGAIN. Thankfully, this car is only a 2-year lease, and after the lease ends, we are seriously considering other alternatives. It is worth noting that Ford AC tends to fail fairly quickly, as my wife's previous car, a 2004 Ford Mustang, had AC failure after only 60,000 miles of driving. Despite the AC problem, this is otherwise a very fun machine to drive.

I purchased my Cobra used with only 4600 miles on it. Unfortunately, I had to have the driver's side head replaced under warranty at 5700 miles due to valve guide wear. This is a known issue, and Ford has a TSB for it. You can identify the problem by listening for a tick during idle, which is not injector noise but a moderately loud ticking. However, I'm happy to report that the issue has been resolved. While I enjoy the car for what it is, it's important to note that it won't outperform a Z06 in its stock form. Additionally, these cars are quite heavy and can be challenging to launch from a standstill.

I am sorry to hear about your negative experience with your 2015 Mustang. It seems like you have had some issues with the AC and the Evaporator. It must have been frustrating to have to deal with this problem twice within 40000 miles. I understand your disappointment and frustration with the situation. It is important to do thorough research before making a purchase, and I appreciate you sharing your experience to help others. Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback to the dealership, and I hope you have better luck with your future car purchases.Isn't it a pity? The car drives nicely and I thought Ford's reliability and quality were increasing. I hope they can improve in the future!

After purchasing my 2018 Mustang GT, I experienced issues with the engine. Despite the dealer replacing the engine, the problem persisted a few months later. Upon returning to the dealer, I learned that Ford had issued a technical bulletin advising against repair attempts. Despite the ongoing noise issue, I remain confident in my ability to address the situation and will continue to pursue a resolution with Ford.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. I've only driven it for 1300 miles, but unfortunately, I've encountered a couple of issues. When I reach speeds of 50mph or greater, the car starts to vibrate and the vibration gets worse the faster I drive. Additionally, the shifting makes a metal pinging noise. I've taken my car to the dealer twice, but they haven't been able to fix either problem yet. I'm planning to bring it back to the dealer again, but I'm not feeling too confident that they'll be able to fix it this time. I've done some research and it seems that many Mustang owners are experiencing the same issues without getting them resolved. If you're also experiencing these problems, please let Edmunds know so that we can work together to find a solution. Thanks for reading!
