The Mustang also had an effect on designs of coupes worldwide, leading to the marketing of the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri in the United States (the latter, by Lincoln-Mercury). The Mercury Cougar was launched in 1967 as a unique-bodied higher-trim alternative to the Mustang; during the 1970s, it included more features and was marketed as a personal luxury car.
From 1965 until 2004, the Mustang shared chassis commonality with other Ford model lines, staying rear-wheel-drive throughout its production. From 1965 to 1973, the Mustang was derived from the 1960 Ford Falcon compact. From 1974 until 1978, the Mustang (denoted Mustang II) was a longer-wheelbase version of the Ford Pinto. From 1979 until 2004, the Mustang shared its Fox platform chassis with 14 other Ford vehicles (becoming the final one to use the Fox architecture). Since 2005, Ford has produced two generations of the Mustang, each using a distinct platform unique to the model line.
Through its production, multiple nameplates have been associated with the Ford Mustang series, including GT, Mach 1, Boss 302/429, Cobra (separate from Shelby Cobra), and Bullitt, along with "5.0" fender badging (denoting 4.9 L OHV or 5.0 L DOHC V8 engines).

I CALLED FORD CUSTOMER CARE WITH MY SAFETY CONCERNS AND REQUESTED THEY SEND A REPRESENTATIVE TO PLANET FORD TO INSPECT THE TANK FOR DEFECT AND WHAT MAY HAVE CAUSED IT. THEY TOLD ME THE FORD SERVICE MANAGER AT PLANET FORD WOULD HAVE TO DO THAT. WHEN I TOLD MY SERVICE REP AT PLANET FORD WHAT CUSTOMER CARE SAID, THE FORD REP/TECHNICIAN DENIED THAT THEY COULD DO THAT AND OFFERED ME KNOW FURTHER HELP WITH ESCALATING MY CONCERNS TO FORD. - Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2005-2014 Mustang, 2004-2011 Ranger, 2009-2011 Mercury Milan, 2006 Ford GT, 2008-2012 Fusion, 2007-2010 Edge and Lincoln MKX, and 2009-2010 Lincoln MKZ vehicles. These vehicles may be equipped with a driver or passenger frontal air bag inflator used as a replacement service part, that may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the frontal air bag, an inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver and passenger air bag module, and replace either the module or the inflator, if necessary, free of charge. Fantastic machine! I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new Mustang. Don't listen to those who say to wait for the '11s - this car has more power than anyone could need on today's roads! The car handles extremely well, and the five-speed is a dream to operate. Ford has also executed the redesigned and upgraded interior in such a way as to put most 'luxury cars' to shame! I liked the new 2005 Mustang, but this car is off the charts in execution, fun, and excitement. Heads are turning wherever you go - that must be a very cool feeling. Rock on, Ford!!!

I've owned seven Mustangs over the years, from all but the first generation. This is by far my favorite. Everything about the car is outstanding except for the seat not holding me in place when accelerating through corners, and the location of the cup holders directly behind the shifter with the manual trans. However, Ford has done an amazing job of fixing every single complaint I've ever had about any of the other Mustangs I've owned over the years. In my opinion, this is Ford's best car yet!

Hey there! I totally get it, the 2011-up 5.0 is faster, but let me share my experience with you. This car provides an amazing power/handling combo that will not disappoint, especially if you find a TrackPack version with the 3.73 gears, wider tires, and GT500 suspension like I did. It can go from zero to 60 in under 5 seconds and the quarter mile in the mid 13s. Plus, it has great handling without a punishing ride. The styling inside and out is a big improvement over the 05-09 cars with a more muscular design and an upscale look and feel interior. Even the 9-year-old Nav/Infotainment system works better than on some newer cars I've owned. The clutch is easy, the shifter is smooth (unlike the 6-speed manuals that followed), and it has reasonable mpg for a 315 hp V8, which means it can be a flexible daily driver as well. I can't say enough about this car, it has exceeded my expectations. If you're shopping for used 5.0s, it's definitely worth a look as a less expensive alternative. Three years later after this review, I still love this car! I added some exhaust modifications and a custom tune that really enhanced the power. I'd still highly recommend a 2010 to anyone looking for a late model Mustang GT. A year later and my opinion remains the same! With the power modifications I've done, I've closed the gap some on the performance between this and the 5.0. Although, I'm sure the 5.0 still has a stronger top end. Nothing crazy though, just some exhaust, intake, custom tune, pulleys, alum. driveshaft, and shifter. I also improved the brakes and suspension some, by using later Mustang GT and Boss 302 parts. It's really made it an all-around great car. But, honestly, even mostly stock with just an axle-back and a shifter, this was a really fun car. I'd still recommend a low mileage, not beat-on, version as a great used car. Prices have gone up with the insane used car market, but you can still save 3-5 grand on one of these versus a 2011 5.0.

If you own a 2005 to 2009 Mustang GT, you own something truly unique. I had a 2006 GT and a 2008 GT, and in a way, I wish I still had my 2006. The look, feel, sound, gauges, dash, and air conditioning registers on these years were retro and perfect and will never be duplicated again. When it comes to the 2010 GT, it's a great choice. The motor, 5-speed, and steering are all proven and perfect. You can use 87 octane, and the car is too fast and too quick for 95% of urban driving. What you have here is the perfected article. It's the safest, most reliable, and most proven design to date. If you're looking for the quickest option, then the 2011 5.0 is the way to go. Thank you for considering these options!

I purchased the GT (not Premium) with the 3.73 rear axle package, which came with better brakes and sportier stability programming. Unfortunately, my 08 335i had a faulty high-pressure fuel pump, so I decided to get a Stang to ride out the economy. The engine's power, torque, and sound are more enjoyable than a 335's. However, the handling is a bit loose and bouncy front to back and side to side. To improve this, I found it necessary to spend an extra $2k to upgrade the suspension from the 2005-FR3 package, which lowers the car and tightens things up. Although the steering feel is light and dead numb, the engine makes up for it. Overall, it's a very fun car!
