1990 Ford Mustang problems

ford logo

The Ford Mustang is a series of American automobiles manufactured by Ford. In continuous production since 1964, the Mustang is currently the longest-produced Ford car nameplate. Currently in its seventh generation, it is the fifth-best selling Ford car nameplate. The namesake of the "pony car" automobile segment, the Mustang was developed as a highly styled line of sporty coupes and convertibles derived from existing model lines, initially distinguished by "long hood, short deck" proportions.

Originally predicted to sell 100,000 vehicles yearly, the 1965 Mustang became the most successful vehicle launch since the 1927 Model A. Introduced on April 17, 1964 (16 days after the Plymouth Barracuda), over 400,000 units were sold in its first year; the one-millionth Mustang was sold within two years of its launch. In August 2018, Ford produced the 10-millionth Mustang; matching the first 1965 Mustang, the vehicle was a 2019 Wimbledon White convertible with a V8 engine.

The success of the Mustang launch led to multiple competitors from other American manufacturers, including the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird (1967), AMC Javelin (1968), and Dodge Challenger (1970). It also competed with the Plymouth Barracuda, which was launched around the same time. The Mustang also had an effect on designs of coupes worldwide, leading to the marketing of the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri in the United States (the latter, by Lincoln-Mercury). The Mercury Cougar was launched in 1967 as a unique-bodied higher-trim alternative to the Mustang; during the 1970s, it included more features and was marketed as a personal luxury car.

From 1965 until 2004, the Mustang shared chassis commonality with other Ford model lines, staying rear-wheel-drive throughout its production. From 1965 to 1973, the Mustang was derived from the 1960 Ford Falcon compact. From 1974 until 1978, the Mustang (denoted Mustang II) was a longer-wheelbase version of the Ford Pinto. From 1979 until 2004, the Mustang shared its Fox platform chassis with 14 other Ford vehicles (becoming the final one to use the Fox architecture). Since 2005, Ford has produced two generations of the Mustang, each using a distinct platform unique to the model line.

Through its production, multiple nameplates have been associated with the Ford Mustang series, including GT, Mach 1, Boss 302/429, Cobra (separate from Shelby Cobra), and Bullitt, along with "5.0" fender badging (denoting 4.9 L OHV or 5.0 L DOHC V8 engines).

Common 1990 Ford Mustang problems

The 1990 Ford Mustang, like any other car, is prone to certain common problems that owners have reported over the years. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues and their details:

  • Lack of Cup Holders: The 1990 Ford Mustang was designed without cup holders, making it difficult to securely hold beverages during long drives or cruises.
  • Worn Out Headlights: The headlights of the 1990 Mustang can become hazy or damaged due to road debris, UV rays, harsh cleaners, and heat from incandescent bulbs. This can reduce light output and affect visibility.
  • Broken Ashtray Door Hinge: The ashtray door hinge in the 1990 Mustang can break over time, causing the door to flop open or closed. This can be fixed with hinge repairs, hinge parts, or replacement ashtray doors.
  • Faulty Window Motors: The window motors in the 1990 Mustang can wear out over time, causing the windows to become inoperable. This can affect airflow and make drive-thru orders more difficult.
  • Broken Door Handles: The OEM door handles in the 1990 Mustang are made from hard plastic that can become brittle over time, leading to breakage. Aftermarket solutions offer metal versions, but many restored Mustangs may opt for OEM door handles.
  • Saggy or Loose Doors: The door pins and hinges in the 1990 Mustang can wear out, causing the door to become saggy or loose. This can lead to accelerated wear on the door striker, weatherstrip, and door latch, and can also affect the weatherstripping's function.
  • Damaged OEM Wheels: The OEM wheels in the 1990 Mustang can become oxidized and damaged over time, with no way to replace the whole wheel. Aftermarket solutions are available, but many restored Mustangs may prefer OEM-style replacement wheels.
  • Twisted Frame Rails and Cracked Torque Boxes: Due to the large engine up front and the tendency of Mustang owners to utilize said large engine, twisted frame rails, and cracked torque boxes are quite common in the 1990 Mustang. These issues can affect the car's structural integrity and should be addressed promptly.
  • Water Pump and Rear Main Seal Leaks: The water pump and rear main seal in the 1990 Mustang can leak, causing engine coolant and oil to leak out respectively. These issues can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  • Transmission Issues: The T5 transmission in the 1990 Mustang can have issues with reverse and 3rd gear, while the AOD transmission can have issues with downshifting. The Limited Slip Differential can also have issues with the Trak Lok.
  • Electrical Issues: Electrical issues, such as faulty horn buttons, can also be a common problem in the 1990 Mustang.

While these issues can be concerning, many of them can be addressed with the right parts and technical guides. It's important to thoroughly inspect any 1990 Mustang before purchasing and to address any issues promptly to ensure the car's longevity and safety.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,VISIBILITY,TIRES,WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-07-15
  • VIN: IFACP41A9LF
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,VISIBILITY,TIRES,WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: THERE ARE 54,000 MILES ON THE CAR. I BOUGHT THE CAR END OF NOVEMBER WHEN THERE WERE ONLY 49,000 MILES ON IT. THE PAINT IS PEELING VERY BADLY ON THE FRONT BUMPER. I INQUIRED ABOUT A REPAINT AND IT WAS GOING TO BE WELL OVER $5,800. I HAD TO PUT 3 TRANSMISSIONS IN THE CAR (IN ABOUT END OF FEBRUARY, AGAIN IN ABOUT 3 WEEKS ANOTHER ONE HAD TO BE PUT IN) I ONLY PAID ABOUT $1,100.00 FOR THE TRANSMISSION AND THE OTHERS WERE COVERED BY THE MECHANICS WARRANTY. THE TRANSMISSION THAT WAS IN THERE WAS FRIED WHEN THEY SOLD IT TO ME. A RIM HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE IT WAS BENT WHICH COSTED $45.00. I HAD TO REPLACE THE COOLING SYSTEM ($800.00) (JUNE 24 2003) BECAUSE IT WAS NOT WORKING AT ALL. THE ENGINE HAD OVER HEATED CAUSING THE RADIO TO MALFUNCTION. A/C DOES NOT WORK AT ALL, IT BLOWS HOT AIR. HEATER WORKS BUT IT TAKES A VERY LONG TIME BEFORE HEAT COMES OUT. IF THE CAR COULD JUST BE REPAINTED BY FORD, I?LL PAY A DEDUCTABLE IF NECESSARY BECAUSE IT IS A VERY NICE CAR AND I LOVE THE WAY IT DRIVES AND HANDLES. NOTHING COMPARES TO THE MUSTANG, BUT THE PAINT PEELING SOMETIMES IS A BIT EMBARRASSING BECAUSE IT?S A NICE CAR, WELL MAINTAINED, BUT THE PAINT IS PEELING. IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO MAKE FORD REPAINT MY CAR FOR ME?

UPON INVESTIGATING THIS PROBLEM ON WWW.CORRAL.NET, I FOUND OUT THAT THE REASON THE HEADLIGHTS TURN OFF IS THAT FORD USED AN INSUFFICIENT GAUGE WIRE TO ROUTE POWER TO THE FOGLIGHTS. A TECH ARTICLE (HTTP://WWW.CORRAL.NET/TECH/) WAS WRITTEN BY ONE OF THE CORRAL.NET MEMBERS ON HOW TO REMEDY THIS SITUATION. I WAS JUST BRINGING IT TO YOUR ATTENTION THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM AND I CANNOT BELIEVE THERE WAS NEVER A SAFETY RECALL ISSUED. LOSING YOUR HEADLIGHTS AT NIGHT IS AN OBVIOUS PROBLEM AND HAZARD TO EVERYONE ON THE ROAD.

Negative 1990 Ford Mustang car reviews

  1. Johann Hagenes 2024-10-04

No major problems in 108k miles. Even though the v8 was a bit underpowered compared to modern performance cars, it still provided a smooth ride. Traction was extremely poor in snow, but the comfortable seats and easy-to-use controls made up for it. The standard rims had limited tire selection, but overall it was a great car. Fuel economy could be better, but that's to be expected with a v8 engine. Although the exterior design was dated, it still had its own charm.

  2. Nathan Fay 2024-08-09

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share with you my experience with this amazing car that I purchased back in 11/93 when it only had 35k miles on it. It was already in great condition and had been well taken care of by its previous owner, who was most likely not a muscle car enthusiast. However, I couldn't resist getting my hands on it and taking it for a spin. Fast forward 13 years later and this car is now less than 3k miles away from reaching 300k miles! Can you believe it? And the best part is that it still has the original engine and transmission, which have never been replaced. Of course, I've had to replace some of the normal wear and tear items like the alternator, brakes, tires, fuel pump, heater core, lock actuators, passenger window motor gear, struts and a recalled ECM, but that's to be expected. Despite all of this, the car still runs as smoothly as the day I bought it and has been a fantastic investment. Thank you for letting me share my story with you!

  3. Dennis Swift 2024-05-28

I used to own a 5.0 Mustang, which was a great car to drive. However, I did experience a few issues such as the automatic transmission failing at 50,000 miles, which unfortunately was out of warranty. I had to spend $1500.00 to get it rebuilt. Additionally, I had some problems with stalling due to the TFI ignition module, fuel pump kicking out because of the impact switch in the trunk, and leaking headlight housings, which is a common issue for Ford products. Despite these issues, I still enjoyed driving the car.

  4. Olin Towne 2024-05-18

I bought my mustang with over 100,000 miles on it, and it has been a great car. When something does break, it is easy to work on and parts are easy to find. If you're looking for a Mustang to buy, I would recommend going with the 5 speed, 5.0 litre coupe. The automatic has problems, as does the convertible's top.

  5. Gordon O'Conner 2024-04-24

This is a great car to drive short distances. However, the poor suspension and lack of good seats make long drives difficult. On the bright side, the sound system is good, but you may need to turn up the volume when driving over 45 miles per hour (and in this car, the fun begins much faster than that!)

Hey there! The only way to go!

  2. Domingo Bosco 2025-01-02

I really like my car, but it has had some issues. The transmission went out at 120,000 miles, the water pump at 121,000, and the alternator at 122,000. Despite these setbacks, I'm still holding onto hope that everything will eventually be alright.

  3. Bell Connelly 2024-09-23

It sounds like you have a great car! The precision handling and nice sounding engine make for a really enjoyable ride. Plus, it's super comfortable!

  4. Antwan Hickle 2024-09-09

Great car! It's awesome to hear that you're enjoying your 1990 Ford Mustang GT so much. It sounds like it has some serious power and is a lot of fun to drive. Plus, with all the aftermarket parts available, you can really make it your own. Thanks for sharing your experience!

  5. Chandler Sporer 2024-08-18

Back in the early 90's, they saved my life several times in NY. They were even more helpful in South Bend, IN when they helped us out during a snowstorm. They made sure my wife and I got back to NY safely for Christmas and later back to IN. Unfortunately, we had to replace the transmission under a silent recall at an IN Ford dealership. When I lost my hearing, I gave the car to my dad to trade in with his Bronco for an Expedition.
