2015 Ford Mustang problems

The Ford Mustang is a series of American automobiles manufactured by Ford. In continuous production since 1964, the Mustang is currently the longest-produced Ford car nameplate. Currently in its seventh generation, it is the fifth-best selling Ford car nameplate. The namesake of the "pony car" automobile segment, the Mustang was developed as a highly styled line of sporty coupes and convertibles derived from existing model lines, initially distinguished by "long hood, short deck" proportions.

Originally predicted to sell 100,000 vehicles yearly, the 1965 Mustang became the most successful vehicle launch since the 1927 Model A. Introduced on April 17, 1964 (16 days after the Plymouth Barracuda), over 400,000 units were sold in its first year; the one-millionth Mustang was sold within two years of its launch. In August 2018, Ford produced the 10-millionth Mustang; matching the first 1965 Mustang, the vehicle was a 2019 Wimbledon White convertible with a V8 engine.

The success of the Mustang launch led to multiple competitors from other American manufacturers, including the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird (1967), AMC Javelin (1968), and Dodge Challenger (1970). It also competed with the Plymouth Barracuda, which was launched around the same time. The Mustang also had an effect on designs of coupes worldwide, leading to the marketing of the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri in the United States (the latter, by Lincoln-Mercury). The Mercury Cougar was launched in 1967 as a unique-bodied higher-trim alternative to the Mustang; during the 1970s, it included more features and was marketed as a personal luxury car.

From 1965 until 2004, the Mustang shared chassis commonality with other Ford model lines, staying rear-wheel-drive throughout its production. From 1965 to 1973, the Mustang was derived from the 1960 Ford Falcon compact. From 1974 until 1978, the Mustang (denoted Mustang II) was a longer-wheelbase version of the Ford Pinto. From 1979 until 2004, the Mustang shared its Fox platform chassis with 14 other Ford vehicles (becoming the final one to use the Fox architecture). Since 2005, Ford has produced two generations of the Mustang, each using a distinct platform unique to the model line.

Through its production, multiple nameplates have been associated with the Ford Mustang series, including GT, Mach 1, Boss 302/429, Cobra (separate from Shelby Cobra), and Bullitt, along with "5.0" fender badging (denoting 4.9 L OHV or 5.0 L DOHC V8 engines).

Common 2015 Ford Mustang problems

The 2015 Ford Mustang, while a popular and thrilling car to drive, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. These issues, while not major, can cause headaches for those who own the vehicle.

One of the most frequently reported problems is paint peeling off, particularly on flat surfaces such as the hood and roof. This issue is often caused by prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and it can be costly to fix, with each panel requiring repainting at an average cost of $1,000.

Another common problem reported by owners is engine shaking and stalling, particularly in models equipped with the EcoBoost motor. This issue is often caused by a problem with the crankcase ventilation valve, or PCV. Replacing the PCV can fix the problem, but it can cost around $400, depending on local labor rates.

Squealing brakes are also a common problem in some Mustang models, particularly around the 10,000-mile mark. If the brakes are used hard, they can wear out faster. Replacing the brake pads costs around $250, while a set of new rotors is around $600.

There are also several recalls on the 2015 Mustang, with the most serious one being for fuel vapor lines, which may break down from heat. Ford will replace the lines to prevent fuel vapors from leaking.

In terms of reliability, a well-maintained 2015 Ford Mustang should last around 250,000 miles, which is longer than the highly-rated Dodge Challenger. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other sports cars, at $766 per year. However, buyers should be prepared to replace the intake manifold evaporative canister costing $450, as well as the crankshaft position sensor, which costs $175, as these are common issues in the 2015 Mustang.

Despite these issues, many owners of the 2015 Ford Mustang report that it is a reliable car with few problems. However, some have reported issues with the backup camera, which can be damaged by slamming the trunk hard. Overall, the 2015 Ford Mustang is a reliable car that can last for many years with proper maintenance.

  • VIN: 1FA6P8THXF5
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The airbag light is on, the vehicle has not been in an accident. The vehicle has less than 50k miles on it. The bags have never deployed. I did not have this repaired. There is a seatbelt recall that affects airbags... Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2015 Ford Mustang vehicles manufactured August 18, 2014, to October 2, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the passenger safety belt tension sensor may misclassify the size of the front passenger seat occupant. This could cause a child size occupant to be classified as an adult and an adult passenger to be classified as a child passenger. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208, "Occupant Crash Protection." Does this cause the airbag light to come on???

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-30
  • VIN: 1FATP8UH3F5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The weld that connects the clutch pedal bar to the tube it pivots in broke on my 2015 Mustang. This makes the pedal wobbly and can prevent the clutch from being fully depressed. For months, the clutch was squeaking. Upon inspection, I noticed the weld was broken. I have not been in an accident because of this, however, the clutch pedal is now loose and can at times hit the 'neutral' switch (which measures full depression of the clutch to allow the car to start), which prevents inconsistent depression of the clutch, leading to unsafe operation.

This was very rapid fluctuation. I also noticed that the cruise control was not working. This was very scary being on the highway with this kind of speed fluctuation. After i came back home, i noticed that the brake light wouldnt turn off at all. After doing some research i found that the brake light switch broke and the car was sensing that the brake was being applied and hence was doing acceleration fluctuations. I also found out that there are many other same vehicles which has the same issue.

POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-18
  • VIN: 1FA6P8CF0F5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Related to Regional Recall 22R01, the rubber bumper on my brake pedal that engages the brake light switch failed and placed the vehicle in a low power mode. This failure occurred while merging onto the interstate and almost resulted in my being rear-ended by a semi truck. Having never been notified of this regional recall, I was able to verify this was the case after searching forums and YouTube and identifying the pieces of the broken bumper in my floorboard. I find it to be HORRENDOUSLY unacceptable that this was allowed to be handled as a regional recall and no notice was ever produced, as it is a safety-related issue that could have resulted in grievous bodily harm. I am located in Kentucky, which is not part of the named region.

AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-04
  • VIN: 1FA6P8CF9F5
  • Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: There is a well known evaporator core issue with the Ford Mustangs/Trucks that were produced between the 2015-2017 models. Freon leaks out of the evaporator core due to poor build quality this creates a white film on the windshield of the vehicle that makes it hard for drivers to see. This happened to me when I first bought my car and I could have crashed but was able to safely pull over and clean the windshield off. This film buildup can happen at anytime and also releases an unpleasant order into the atmosphere that should not be breathed in and is very harmful to the environment. Ford is well aware of this issue and decided to avoid doing a recall to prevent the company from losing money. I am also having an airbag issue on my Mustang this one is current. I have not been in any accidents or driven the car in anyway to make the light come on. The drivers side airbag light is on and is indicating that their is an issue with my airbag system. This is a huge safety concern and I don't want to wait for something to happen for either of these issues to be fixed. The AC issue is new for me with Ford but out of the 4 mustangs I have owned 3 of them have all had recalls for an airbag issue. The first was my 2005 V6 base model. The second was my 2010 Mustang GT. and the third was my 2014 Mustang GT. This is now my 4th mustang and still having air bag issues. Please do something about any of these issues if you can. I am sure numerous of other people have experienced what I am experiencing. I have even done research and seen forums that are over 150 pages long regarding some of the safety issues mentioned in this message. Please and Thank You Very Much

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-21
  • VIN: 1FA6P8AM1F5
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE
  • Summary: A plastic clip ("Brake Pedal Bumper") broke and fell out of place, causing the brake pedal to no longer reach the brake light switch. The brake lights now remain illuminated permanently, even with the brakes released. This also caused the engine and transmission to go into "limp mode", the engine no longer revving over 2,000 RPM, the transmission not shifting, and hill-start assist and traction control no longer working, making the car unsafe to drive. The brake lights will remain on even when the car is completely shut off and locked, draining and damaging the battery. It is my understanding that this is a known issue, and there was a recall for this in certain states. (Safety Recall 22S02, Regional Recall 22R01). There should be a national recall for this, as the affected part appears to be of low quality, and causes safety issues when it fails, with the car's drivability and lighting affected.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-14
  • VIN: 1FA6P8AM9F5

BRAKE LAMP SWITCH HAS ALREADY BEEN REPLACED AND NO ISSUE WITH WIRING. POSITIVE THE PLASTIC STOP BUMPER IS THE ISSUE.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-19
  • VIN: 1FA6P8TH5F5
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I ran into the existing issue described in "Part 573 Safety Recall Report" NHTSA Recall Number 22V-011, but in a state not listed under the recall (vehicle purchased used in Pennsylvania in 2017). As a result of this part failing, my brake lights remained engaged permanently, and the car's engine power would increase and decrease rapidly (presumably because it thought I kept hitting the breaks). At time of writing I still have the broken pieces of the original part. I plan to take the vehicle into service within the week. There are no warning lights when this occurs since everything I'm the car is technically "operating correctly" - it just thinks the breaks are engaged constantly, and so has erratic behavior. The original recall lists high humidity as a cause, which Pennsylvania definitely has. I keep my vehicle outside 24/7, so it has definitely been part of many temperature swings.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-14
  • VIN: 1FATP8EM4F5
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Door lock not secure. It has happened a few times, usually on the highway, where the passenger side door has opened slightly while driving, causing the opened door light to come on. The door is visibly cracked opened, but it is still locked.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-14
  • VIN: 1FA6P8CF2F5
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The steering gear including contour module went out. I was backing out and couldn’t turn my wheel my sisters boyfriend had to drive it home on a curvy road with no power steering. I have a local mechanic looking at it but they said the part is on back order which means this must happen a lot. They finally got the part and now are saying it won’t program so are needing to order another part. When I turned the car on to leave my destination it said service powersteering system and abs, but before that there were no warnings. I unplugged the battery for 30 minutes to rest the car and everything worked fine for another 1, then driving down the road it went out again.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-15
  • VIN: 1FA6P8CFXF5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2015 Ford Mustang. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed and attempting to accelerate, upon the transmission shifting into 4th gear, the tachometer rose 3,000 RPM, after which the vehicle lost motive power and the transmission was unable to shift above 4th gear. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the clutch. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 10,000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-15
  • VIN: 1FA6P8TH7F5
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: Third tail light and rear tail lights remained illuminated after the car was turned off. Driver discovered the brake light switch (rubber/plastic piece) had crumbled into the floor board preventing the tail lights from turning off, thus, becoming a hazard to other motorists on the road as the tail lights remained illuminated even while driving. While the vehicle was being driven, the driver could not accelerate to the appropriate speeds as the car was "thinking" the brakes were being applied and could only approximately drive at 40-50 MPH. The vehicle has been inspected and the above information was confirmed as the issue. No other warnings/messages occurred prior to the piece breaking.

2015 Ford Mustang recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 9 recalls for different components of the 2015 Ford Mustang.

2022-02-16
  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company

  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Mustang vehicles. The rearview camera wiring may be loose or damaged, which can result in a blank or distorted image.
  • Consequence: A rearview camera that displays a blank or distorted image can reduce the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Dealers will inspect and repair the decklid wiring harness and/or replace the rearview camera, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 23, 2022 and June 26, 2023. Remedy parts are expected to become available in the 4th Quarter of 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S06.
2022-01-13
  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:PEDALS AND LINKAGES
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2014-2015 Fusion, Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 Mustang vehicles originally sold or ever registered, in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Hawaii. Exposure to certain environmental conditions, such as high temperatures, high humidity, and salt air can cause the brake pedal bumper to corrode and separate from the brake pedal.
  • Consequence: A separated brake pedal bumper can cause the brake lights to illuminate continuously, causing confusion to other drivers and increasing the risk of a crash. On automatic transmission vehicles, a missing brake pedal bumper can allow the driver to shift the vehicle out of the "PARK" position without depressing the brake, allowing the vehicle to rollaway, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Dealers will replace the brake pedal bumpers and clutch pedal bumpers, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed on March 4, 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 13, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S02.

Negative 2015 Ford Mustang car reviews

  1. Arvel Kozey 2024-09-28

Although there have been some issues with the car, I must say that it is a blast to drive. However, I have had some trouble with rumbling and vibration between 50 & 70 mph, drive shaft replacement at 1100 miles, A/C not cooling properly/blower fan surges, radio malfunctioning 3 times, windshield wipers malfunctioning, and both front seatbacks having mechanical issues. I believe that with the right attention to customer satisfaction, these issues can be resolved and the car can truly be world-class.

  2. Everett Rempel 2024-09-18

If you are considering buying a S550 Mustang (2015+), it's important to be aware of a design/engineering issue that may cause vibration between 55-70mph. Unfortunately, Ford has been unable to identify the problem, and many owners have had to leave their cars at dealerships for months while waiting for parts that may or may not fix the issue. We recommend test driving the car and paying attention to any vibrations in this speed range. While this issue may affect a significant number of cars, it's important to note that not all cars are affected. For more information, please refer to http://www.mustang6g.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15990. We advise waiting until Ford releases a TSB before considering purchasing an S550 Mustang. Thank you for your understanding.

I recently leased a 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost, which I had been eagerly anticipating for years. Despite never having owned a Mustang before, I had always admired the 5.0 liter pony cars. When Ford released the redesigned Mustang in 2015, I knew I had to have one. After reading glowing reviews about the EcoBoost's power and fuel efficiency, I was sold. I traded in my old car and drove off the lot with my new Mustang. The car's design turned heads everywhere I went, and it was clear that the Mustang was a real head-turner. However, after driving it for a while, I began to notice some issues. The EcoBoost engine lacked the power I had expected, and the brakes were already squealing. The radio had trouble picking up local stations, and the interior rattled in cold weather. Despite my initial excitement, I found myself disappointed with the Mustang's performance. I test drove other cars, including the Honda Accord Coupe V6 and the Chevy Camaro V6, and found them to be more refined and better suited to my needs. Although I had always dreamed of owning a Mustang, I have come to the difficult decision that it's time to move on from this car.

I bought this Mustang off the showroom floor in May 2015 and drove it sparingly as a second vehicle. I sold it this past March with under 1000 miles on it. Although I lost about 15% from what I paid (Ford employee pricing plus $500 rebate), I still enjoyed the experience. I was drawn to the new design, the Race Red color, and the knowledge of all that power under the hood. I've had several Mustangs in my past, starting with a '66 GT, and I always had an aversion toward them in general, at least in comparison with the Challenger, Camaro, and other sporty coupes. However, the power and torque are definitely there in this new edition of the GT. The gas mileage wasn't great, averaging around 16mpg, but I didn't buy the GT for gas mileage. The rear cargo area with the seats down was ample to carry my musical gear. For $31,000 delivered, it was close to what a Focus ST would cost and definitely in a higher class of sports car in my opinion. Finally, one of the things that bothered me the most about the Mustang was the lack of sufficient width in the front seats. As someone who is 6'1 and 180lbs, the curves on each end started way too early and would literally bend into both ends of my back, resulting in discomfort. I can't imagine how I would feel after a long road trip. Overall, while I enjoyed the experience, I don't think I would purchase another Mustang.

I bought this car in September 2014, but unfortunately, the dealership made an error on the order and I had to wait nearly 6 months to receive it. However, when I finally got the car, it was absolutely beautiful and I had a great time driving it for the first few months. After a while, I did experience some issues with the brakes squeaking and the paint starting to swirl, which was disappointing. I also had to replace the front two tires after just 5 months, which was frustrating, but I understand that these things can happen. Unfortunately, after 8 months, the car had a major issue with white smoke coming from the rear and had to be taken to the shop. Despite these issues, I still think the car was a beauty. In December 2016, I decided to sell the car.

Positive 2015 Ford Mustang car reviews

  1. Estevan Hirthe 2024-11-22

I never thought I would own a Ford Mustang after my experience of going out to purchase one when they first changed the body style to the 'throwback' look. However, after my BMW Z4 convertible got totaled in the hailstorm, I was actually given a 2016 Mustang as my rental and I fell in love with it. It's absolutely gorgeous inside and out. If you can find the ceramic interior, oh my gosh..absolutely gorgeous. The black interior is beautiful too, in fact that's what I have in mine right now. I love it. This car is in the same class as Chevrolet's Corvette. It drives so smooth, it has quite a few driving modes from normal, to comfort, sport+, to track and even snow/rain. You can adjust your ride however you want. It has ambient lighting inside, which I believe has 8 different color choices. You can change the gauges and lighting in the car to different colors. It has the Mustang logo light that comes from the mirror when you open your door in the dark on both passenger and driver side. The trunk space is unbelievable. The back bucket seats, that's right bucket seats in the back, also fold down to give you even more room in the trunk. I have the big screen in my car which is incredible. It makes it so easy to see when you are backing up with the rear view camera. It has climate controlled seats which was a HUGE selling point being in TX, I can actually cool my seats down before I get in it. It has the remote start and key-less ignition to make this all possible. This car has so many amazing features! It even has dual a/c and you can preset the car to save your a/c settings on both sides. You can even turn off the passenger side if you so desire. The heated seats are perfect for winter or if you have a sore back, especially when you're sitting in traffic. Although it doesn't have the blind spot feature, I did drive one that did and it worked great. If you don't have navigation, you can order a subscription to SYNC with Ford for $60 plus tax for the year which is refundable, by the way. I did order the SYNC subscription but was disappointed that it only showed the street names of where to turn on the screen, not an actual map. The sound was just okay, so I cancelled it and bought a Garmin with a cross over lane alert, which is very similar to the blind spot option. My favorite thing about the car, besides the color, the features, the wi-fi, voice activated controls, ambient lighting, cool and heated seats, remote start, keyless entry, unbelievable smooth ride, roomy trunk space which expands, the gorgeous lightening blue color, leather bucket seats front and back, console and glove compartment, blue tooth, would be my SHAKER radio system and my 20 in Premium chrome wheels. The wheels change the whole look of the car. I could have purchased a black one, 2016 instead of 2015, but one the seats were orangish...terracotta??, doesn't matter, they would have had to be redone, but the wheels were the standard wheels. They looked like two totally different cars when placed side by side. I stuck with the 2015, even though all of the features were exactly the same with the exception of the blind spot alert, seats I couldn't live with but could have changed with the money I would have saved, but the smaller tires and wheels without the chrome, just made it look so small, next to my muscle car. I highly recommend this car! There are no blind spots and great visibility. The car has great features and rides like a dream. The customer service is also great. It's my first Ford ever and I can't believe the improvements in the brand over the last 20 years. They have really come a long way. So it's definitely going to be my car for a very long time. I just love it and couldn't be happier. I hope this helps!

If you're looking for a car that will turn heads and make you feel like a million bucks, this is the one for you! I have a black/black convertible with a V6 and I absolutely love it. Living in Philly, I don't need a V8 or turbo, but I definitely need the top to go down. I was even able to add OEM leather with heated pads and a switch, as well as a Pioneer 4210NEX with a Scosche touch screen for heating/AC. The OEM Mustang door sill and Pony Puddle lights on my doors are just the icing on the cake. And the coolest thing? The Pony on the front of my car is LED and lights up! My 6-year-old daughter feels like a Prom Queen riding in the back, and I have to say, the interior of my V6 is even better than the GT. It's simply amazing. I even have LED lights by the feet and around the shifter. I absolutely adore my car and love to just cruise around in it, just like I used to do with my old 2003 Cadillac Deville DTS.

  3. Bernie Feil 2024-10-20

The car is decent overall, but the electronics could use some improvement. Unfortunately, the mirror on the passenger side tends to move on its own and the rear camera fails regularly, which can be frustrating. Despite these issues, the car has remained dependable with no serious problems. In fact, it was even selected to represent the 2015 year in a display at the Ponies in the Smokies car show in Tennessee! We did encounter some issues with the paint, but we were able to have it corrected by a professional detailer and are happy with the results. Overall, we've had a positive experience with the car and would recommend it to others. The detailer did an excellent job of sanding and polishing the surface, removing 90% of the blemishes. It's important to note that adding a ceramic coating can enhance any imperfections, so the paint needs to look perfect before applying it. While this paint issue might have made serious car show people trade the car for a different one, we bought it as a weekend cruiser and are happy to live with the flaws. We upgraded the exhaust system with a Borla S type, and it sounds incredible! Additionally, we added a cold air intake and a Bama tune, which increased the horsepower from 385 to 465. Unfortunately, the back-up camera still works intermittently, and the dealer is at a loss as there are no codes in the computer. Is this a fun car? Absolutely! Does it attract attention? Too much! Does it foster a sense of confidence in its dependability? Yes. However, given the issues experienced so far, it doesn't give the impression of quality. Would we buy this car again? No, our desire to own a Mustang has faded, although we don't have plans to sell or trade the car at this time.

Congratulations on your new EcoBoost Premium! It's great to hear that you're enjoying your first Mustang. I completely understand your decision to choose the EcoBoost Premium over the GT, as it's important to consider factors like insurance costs. It's also great to see that Ford has addressed the interior quality in the new 2015 model. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  5. Arvid Jacobson 2024-09-13

I had a 2006 before I got my 15 GT in white. The 5.0L is one of the best American motors for the value out right now. If you can comfortably and have the experience to get a manual, do it! I've had manuals all my life with performance cars. If you're buying this car for the fun and addicting power, get the stick. Coming from a 2006 manual, the '15 transmission feel is greatly improved over the S197. It's not great on gas, but it's great for looking forward to driving it every day.
