2017 Ford Mustang problems

The Ford Mustang is a series of American automobiles manufactured by Ford. In continuous production since 1964, the Mustang is currently the longest-produced Ford car nameplate. Currently in its seventh generation, it is the fifth-best selling Ford car nameplate. The namesake of the "pony car" automobile segment, the Mustang was developed as a highly styled line of sporty coupes and convertibles derived from existing model lines, initially distinguished by "long hood, short deck" proportions.

Originally predicted to sell 100,000 vehicles yearly, the 1965 Mustang became the most successful vehicle launch since the 1927 Model A. Introduced on April 17, 1964 (16 days after the Plymouth Barracuda), over 400,000 units were sold in its first year; the one-millionth Mustang was sold within two years of its launch. In August 2018, Ford produced the 10-millionth Mustang; matching the first 1965 Mustang, the vehicle was a 2019 Wimbledon White convertible with a V8 engine.

The success of the Mustang launch led to multiple competitors from other American manufacturers, including the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird (1967), AMC Javelin (1968), and Dodge Challenger (1970). It also competed with the Plymouth Barracuda, which was launched around the same time. The Mustang also had an effect on designs of coupes worldwide, leading to the marketing of the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri in the United States (the latter, by Lincoln-Mercury). The Mercury Cougar was launched in 1967 as a unique-bodied higher-trim alternative to the Mustang; during the 1970s, it included more features and was marketed as a personal luxury car.

From 1965 until 2004, the Mustang shared chassis commonality with other Ford model lines, staying rear-wheel-drive throughout its production. From 1965 to 1973, the Mustang was derived from the 1960 Ford Falcon compact. From 1974 until 1978, the Mustang (denoted Mustang II) was a longer-wheelbase version of the Ford Pinto. From 1979 until 2004, the Mustang shared its Fox platform chassis with 14 other Ford vehicles (becoming the final one to use the Fox architecture). Since 2005, Ford has produced two generations of the Mustang, each using a distinct platform unique to the model line.

Through its production, multiple nameplates have been associated with the Ford Mustang series, including GT, Mach 1, Boss 302/429, Cobra (separate from Shelby Cobra), and Bullitt, along with "5.0" fender badging (denoting 4.9 L OHV or 5.0 L DOHC V8 engines).

Common 2017 Ford Mustang problems

The 2017 Ford Mustang is a popular sports car, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues by owners of the 2017 Mustang:

  • Squeaking Noise While Turning: This problem is caused by worn outer tie rod ends and has been reported by 87 owners. The squeaking noise is a consistent one that occurs while turning, particularly after 110,000 miles. The repair cost for this issue ranges between $81 and $132.
  • Camshaft Sensor Magnet May Damage Synchronizers: This issue has been reported by 30 owners. When the magnet for the camshaft position sensor falls out of its mount, it can cause damage to the synchronizers. This problem can lead to long crank times when starting the engine and is typically associated with the Check Engine Light illuminating. This issue generally occurs after 102,000 miles.
  • Intake Manifold/Valve Cover Gaskets May Leak Oil: This problem has been reported by 25 owners. The intake manifold gasket can leak coolant or oil, which can impact the lubricating ability of the oil. This issue typically occurs after 148,000 miles and requires replacing the gasket.
  • Body/Paint Problems: According to CarComplaints.com, the worst problem category for the Ford Mustang is body/paint problems. Although the 2010 model year has the most overall complaints, the 2017 model year is rated as worse due to other possible factors such as higher repair cost or more problems at lower mileage. The most-reported problem is with the 2007 Ford Mustang for paint blistering.
  • Engine Runs Hot / Overheats: The Ford 2.3 Liter Eco-Boost engine has a long history of running hot and overheating. This excessive heat can cause failure to brake cables, fuel lines, fuel tanks, and other wiring near the source of the heat. This problem is particularly common in the 2017-2022 Ford Mustang models.
  • Carbon Build-Up: This problem is caused by the direct-injection engine in the Ford Mustang. Over time, oil can build up on the valves, which can cause carbon build-up. This problem can prevent the intake valve from closing properly and can damage piston rings. If your check engine light comes on or your fuel mileage is consistently lower than when you bought the vehicle, please bring your Mustang to the dealership for warranty repairs.
  • Head Gasket Failure: This problem is caused by excessive engine heat and carbon build-up. If you see fluids collecting in your engine compartment or underneath your Ford Mustang, you may have a failed head gasket. Anytime you see fluids leaking from your car, please bring it to the dealership immediately.
  • Piston Failure: This problem is not uncommon in Ford Mustangs. If the issues above, such as carbon buildup, and excessive engine heat are not addressed early enough, your engine’s pistons will eventually become damaged, and cause the engine to fail. While this repair may be covered under your warranty, because of supply chain interruptions, this breakdown could cause your vehicle to be in the dealership for over 30 days.

It is important to note that these problems do not affect all 2017 Ford Mustang owners, and many vehicles may not experience any of these issues. However, it is essential to be aware of these common problems and address them promptly if they occur.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-26
  • VIN: 1FA6P8TH8H5
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: To provide some context, I purchased my Mustang new in 2018, and it currently has 40,000 miles on it. Approximately four weeks ago, I began experiencing a "shaking" issue when cold-starting the engine, accompanied by the check-engine light turning on. I brought my vehicle into your service department, where I was informed by the service representative that the problem was related to the spark plugs. After paying $600 for what was purported to be a fix, I retrieved my car, which drove fine for about a week before the same issue recurred. The engine began shaking again, and the check-engine light reappeared. I promptly scheduled another appointment, explicitly mentioning that the problem was identical to the previous one. Upon dropping off my car, I was told that the mechanic couldn't determine the issue from the initial diagnostic. After three days without any updates, I reached out to my service representative, Jack, who then informed me that my car required an engine replacement due to a coolant leak—a problem he described as a common issue with EcoBoost engines. The cost quoted for this repair was $9,000, an amount I find exorbitant given that my car's total value is around $12,000-$13,000. My primary concern now is the nature of the engine issue. Given that this problem is apparently common with EcoBoost engines, I believe it is a manufacturing defect that should not be my financial responsibility to fix. Furthermore, during my research, I discovered recalls and class action lawsuits related to this exact issue—information that was never communicated to me by your team or at the time of purchase. Unfortunately, my vehicle is not included in these recalls. Coolant leaking into the engine will eventually make my engine overheat and potentially crack the engine. This is a manufacturing issue, and should not be my financial responsibility.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-01
  • VIN: 1FA6P8CF3H5
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The clutch pedal is breaking off of the assembly (can be heard by a creaking sound), which will make it impossible to engage the clutch to change gears when it breaks. The clutch pedal isn’t something that wears like brakes and tires, this is a very important part to the basic operation of the vehicle. There has been numerous examples of this problem occurring for years on many of the Mustangs from this generation. Some have taken it into their own hands to fix the design error from Ford. How this hasn’t been recalled yet (especially after being considered on of the best selling cars) is pathetic and dangerous for everyone in the road and will eventually lead to a fatal accident. I trust that the NHTSA will do the right thing and force a recall for Ford’s greedy and cheap tactics.

The car was towed to a local mechanic who said take it to ford because this is a known issue with 6 cylinder engines. Today, ford called and said it’s a catastrophic engine failure and nothing I did. The cost to replace the engine is $10,000. My car had 97,000 miles and was always well cared for. If ford knows this is an issue, it should be a recall.

This is my second Ford vehicle, both brand new (my biggest mistakes). I currently have the hot sexy red and trying to trade it in. After 2 years it has 16,400 miles, super low with no accidents or damages on my end yet the value of it is now 17,000. Although the car is very beautiful and catches your eyes, I have had some issues with the seat belt buckle connecting when it wants to. I’ve taken it more than 4 times to 2 different dealers, but unfortunately, they were unable to fix it. They claimed they found a penny in it, but I barely use coins, especially in my car. Anyways, I took the penny blame, but about 2 months later, all 4 self belts weren’t working again. I randomly find tiny car parts in the car off the door or somewhere. Now, I’m a single person and barely ever get any passengers, so there’s no way someone else did that and just left it present. If you're considering buying this car, please be aware that it may come with some quality issues. However, it looks amazing and drives pretty fast with good horses.

The car unfortunately had many issues, including a vacuum leak, high RPM between shifts, poor fit of interior and exterior parts, rattles, transmission thud and drivetrain vibration. It was in for service for about 25 days to date, which was quite frustrating. After less than 4 months of ownership, I decided to return it to Ford under the Lemon Law. It was a terrible, expensive, and time-consuming experience. However, I am now a proud owner of a new Camaro, which has been a great car so far!

The steering wheel could use some improvement. It hasn't been updated in a while and the large center section is not very attractive. Additionally, the small display screen could benefit from an upgrade to at least 7 inches for better visibility. Lastly, there are quite a few buttons which can be distracting while driving and may cause you to veer off the road.

Congratulations on your first new car! It's understandable that you're frustrated with the issues you're experiencing, but don't worry, we'll get it sorted out. The dealer will be able to diagnose the problem and get you back on the road soon. Hang in there and keep us updated on how things go. We appreciate your loyalty to Ford and hope to continue providing you with great cars in the future!

That's a beautiful car, but it seems to have some issues. The rear windows may not go up all the way when you put up the convertible top, which could cost around $700 to fix. There may also be issues with the seat warmer relay, which could cost around $500. Additionally, the rear brake lights may be problematic, and it could cost around $650 to replace the entire housing just to fix an LED. It's unfortunate that the car seems to have been poorly engineered by FORD, and there may be many problems waiting to happen. Perhaps a Camaro would have been a better choice. It's possible that the car may experience more issues as it gets older, especially in its second or third year.

I noticed that most of the reviews were for GTs, but I own an Ecoboost Premium Convertible. While the acceleration is so-so, the handling is incredible. I only have two complaints: the window controls are too far forward and the antenna is awkward if you have a car cover, but it unscrews easily to solve that problem. The radio actually works fine without it screwed back in. The rear seats cannot be used for passengers, but I knew that when I bought it. They do make good interior storage, which is something my old Z-3 was short of. The gas mileage is killer. I mentioned that the acceleration is

Great looking, fun to drive. Excellent gas mileage with great pick up. My favorite car of all time.

  3. Hershel Hyatt 2024-09-12

It's great fun to drive, even on short trips. However, it's not the best car to use in rainy or snowy weather.

Yes, they do! Finally, a Mustang for modern America. With the new rear suspension, this car drives like a dream! Unlike the old Mustangs where going into a corner meant ending up at the coroner's, this Mustang lets you power through in control. It's fun to drive with a stiff yet forgiving ride. I can't wait to take this to the track, both the drag and the road track. However, the new Mustang's interior leaves you wanting and thinking why? For example, there are very few fake aluminum-plastic lookalike pieces, 5 switches, 2 accents, and the cowling around each primary air vent. With so few of these items, why not use real aluminum? It would have increased the cost by 60 bucks, so it leaves me saying why? Secondly, the GT Coyote engine suffers from a lack of tech. Ford makes the all-amazing Ford GT, which has an engine that has the capability to turn off cylinders and has the red light Any negatives? Well, one of the plastic trunk latch covers has broken off. However, I use this Mustang to transport 2x4s for home projects and servers from DC to DC, so I use and abuse the trunk. With all that use, one broken plastic cover is honestly a surprise. I was expecting far worse. An improvement would be a soft-touch closing trunk, which would be awesome. Also, a sun/moon roof or an all-glass roof like the Jag F type would put this Mustang over the top. Two years in and my opinion has not changed: the 2017 Mustang GT is the best Mustang that has been made since 1968, and well worth anyone’s consideration! Good luck in the hunt for the car that suits you!
