1998 Ford Mustang problems
The Ford Mustang is a series of American automobiles manufactured by Ford. In continuous production since 1964, the Mustang is currently the longest-produced Ford car nameplate. Currently in its seventh generation, it is the fifth-best selling Ford car nameplate. The namesake of the "pony car" automobile segment, the Mustang was developed as a highly styled line of sporty coupes and convertibles derived from existing model lines, initially distinguished by "long hood, short deck" proportions.
Originally predicted to sell 100,000 vehicles yearly, the 1965 Mustang became the most successful vehicle launch since the 1927 Model A. Introduced on April 17, 1964 (16 days after the Plymouth Barracuda), over 400,000 units were sold in its first year; the one-millionth Mustang was sold within two years of its launch. In August 2018, Ford produced the 10-millionth Mustang; matching the first 1965 Mustang, the vehicle was a 2019 Wimbledon White convertible with a V8 engine.
The success of the Mustang launch led to multiple competitors from other American manufacturers, including the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird (1967), AMC Javelin (1968), and Dodge Challenger (1970). It also competed with the Plymouth Barracuda, which was launched around the same time. The Mustang also had an effect on designs of coupes worldwide, leading to the marketing of the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri in the United States (the latter, by Lincoln-Mercury). The Mercury Cougar was launched in 1967 as a unique-bodied higher-trim alternative to the Mustang; during the 1970s, it included more features and was marketed as a personal luxury car.
From 1965 until 2004, the Mustang shared chassis commonality with other Ford model lines, staying rear-wheel-drive throughout its production. From 1965 to 1973, the Mustang was derived from the 1960 Ford Falcon compact. From 1974 until 1978, the Mustang (denoted Mustang II) was a longer-wheelbase version of the Ford Pinto. From 1979 until 2004, the Mustang shared its Fox platform chassis with 14 other Ford vehicles (becoming the final one to use the Fox architecture). Since 2005, Ford has produced two generations of the Mustang, each using a distinct platform unique to the model line.
Through its production, multiple nameplates have been associated with the Ford Mustang series, including GT, Mach 1, Boss 302/429, Cobra (separate from Shelby Cobra), and Bullitt, along with "5.0" fender badging (denoting 4.9 L OHV or 5.0 L DOHC V8 engines).

Common 1998 Ford Mustang problems
The Ford Mustang, while a dependable muscle car, has its share of common problems across different model years. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 1998 Ford Mustang:
- Transmission Problems: Some owners have reported difficulty shifting after the first gear. In some cases, they are able to resume shifting after reaching 3,000 revolutions per minute (RPM) and easing off the shift gear for a moment. If you experience this issue, the first course of action should be to check your transmission fluid and then to run your trouble codes using an on-board diagnostic tool.
- Air Conditioner Issues: If you are experiencing problems with your air conditioner, it's recommended that you see a certified mechanic, as any number of problems or malfunctioning components could be at play here. Common issues include everything from leaking hoses to a complete system failure, which would require you to need a new air conditioning system.
- IAC (Idle Air Control) Wear: The IAC in your 1996-2004 Mustang GT can become worn down over time, particularly if you are an aggressive driver. It's easy and affordable to replace a worn down IAC. Expect to pay around $50 and spend about 5 to 15 minutes completing the repair.
- Clutch Failure: If the clutch in your 1996-2004 Mustang GT gives out at around the 130,000-mile mark, have it replaced by a certified mechanic. This would not be considered an uncommon repair considering the age of your vehicle.
- Intake Manifold Cracks: It is common for cracks to appear in the intake manifold, requiring the need for a replacement. Visit your local mechanic or Ford dealer to have your intake manifold replaced.
- Body Paint Problems: Many 2007 Ford Mustang owners have reported body paint problems, with paint blistering around their bumpers and severe peeling and chipping off the front edge of the hood. Although some owners took action and brought their cars to the repair shop, most of them were advised that the issue couldn't be fixed because the oxidation would keep coming back.
- Corrosion on the Hood: This issue is also related to the paint blistering exhibited by some units of the 2007 and 2010 Ford Mustang. This problem arose because Ford used aluminum hoods but failed to properly insulate them from iron-based connecting and supporting parts used in the prior model year.
- Faulty Instrument Panel: The instrument panels in classic Mustangs and even some 2005 models have been known to go haywire from time to time, with the speedometer being the major source of concern. When the speedometer is faulty, you won’t know how fast you are going, which can lead to some fatal consequences.
- Service Brake Failure: Mustangs are not new to brake problems like a soft brake pedal, shaky steering wheel, and squeaking noises. If your Mustang brake pedal feels like stepping on a plum and hits the floor with very little resistance, you are having a soft brake pedal and that needs to be fixed immediately.
These issues do not necessarily mean that the Ford Mustang is an unreliable car, but rather that it has specific problems that owners should be aware of and address promptly to ensure the vehicle's longevity and safety.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1FAFP4042XF
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 1999 FORD MUSTANG WITH A 1998 USED ENGINE INSTALLED INTO IT. I ONLY HAD 1 REAL PROBLEM WITH IT AND IT WAS MY EXHAUST. I HAD THAT FIXED AND RAN GREAT FOR THE NEXT DAY. LESS THEN 36 HRS AFTER THE EXHAUST WAS FIXED AND AFTER SITTING FOR ABOUT 15 HRS OR SO, WHICH WAS FROM AROUND 9:45 PM FRIDAY THE 21ST TO AROUND 12:30 TO 1:00 PM ON THE 22ND OF AUGUST. A NEIGHBOR CAME POUNDING ON OUR DOOR TELLING US OUR CAR WAS ON FIRE!!!! HE ALSO STATED THAT HE HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE SOMEONE WAS TRYING TO START IT FROM A DISTANCE. WELL WE DON'T HAVE A REMOTE STARTER FOR THIS CAR, IT ONLY UNLOCKS THE CAR AND TRUNK, DOES NOT START IT. WE BELIEVE IT WAS ELECTRICAL IN NATURE AND NEED TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED AS I ONLY HAD LIABILITY INS. AND NOW I HAVE LOST MY CAR AND HAVE NOTHING...... I HAVE PICTURES OF MY CAR JUST MELTING AWAY, THE ENTIRE FRONT OF IT. I LOVED THIS CAR, I WASN'T EVEN FINISHED PAYING FOR IT. I STILL OWE $1395 ON IT AND I ONLY HAD IT FOR ABOUT 7 MONTHS. FIRE MARSHALL IS STILL INVESTIGATING IT. I BELIEVE HE SAID IT POSSIBLY STARTED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE WHERE THERE WAS A BOX ABOVE THE TIRE AREA WITH WIRES IN IT. WHAT WERE THESE WIRES, WHAT WERE THEY FOR AS I COULDN'T SEE ANYTHING MATCHING THAT DESCRIPTION ON A 1998 ENGINE IMAGE...??? THIS WAS THE FIRST AND ONLY REAL PROBLEM WE HAD, THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS ALWAYS ON FROM THE TIME OF PURCHASE, SELLER DID FIX BUT LIGHT CAME BACK ON IN ABOUT 1 WEEK AND WAS ON UNTIL FIRE. *TR

- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: WE TOOK OUR 1998 6 CYLINDER MUSTANG IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE. IT HAS ABOUT 90,000 MILES ON IT. WE WERE TOLD THAT IT IS LEAKING FUEL AND THAT IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD. WE NOW HAVE TO SPEND $1000 TO REPLACE THE FUEL RAIL, BOTH VALVE GASKETS, VALVE COVER GASKETS AND FUEL INJECTOR O RINGS. PLUS A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT ON LABOR. WE WERE TOLD THAT OUR CAR/ENGINE WILL CATCH FIRE, IF WE DO NOT REPLACE THESE PARTS. THIS IS MY DAUGHTER WHO IS IN COLLEGE'S CAR. HOW CAN THEY HAVE SUCH A HORRIBLE DESIGN AND IF WE REPLACE THE PARTS IS THIS GOING TO BE REPEATED? THE OTHER ISSUE IS THAT THERE WAS NO WARNING FROM AN ENGINE LIGHT OR ANYTHING ELSE. THE TECHNICIAN CHECKED IT BECAUSE WHEN HE LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD, HE THOUGHT HE SMELLED GAS AND THEN FOUND THE LEAK. WE HADN'T NOTICED A LEAK. MY DAUGHTER COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED DRIVING BACK TO SCHOOL THIS WEEK. *TR

I've put 30k on my Mustang in the year I've had it and haven't had a single problem yet. I'm very impressed! Even at fairly high speeds on the highway, it still gets pretty good mileage. I made a 320 mile trek through the Idaho mountains in four hours flat (stopped 15 min. for lunch, too!) on under 3/4 tank (about $15 at $1.40/gal). It's very predictable and forgiving in hard corners. With the 5-speed, you can do some fairly impressive stuff, even with the six. I definitely suggest oversized rims - I put 17's on mine and can out-corner the supposedly more agile imports like Integras and Celicas. Overall, I LOVE IT!!!

Hey there! I'm so excited to share with you my experience with this Mustang! It's one of the last of its style and I've had it for over four years now. The best part? I haven't had a single problem with it, even after all the mods I've done! You know, the ones that every Mustang loves - gears, shifter, exhaust, sub-frame connectors, throttle body, mass air meter, rear anti-sway bar, and of course, a Vortech Supercharger! I've added many more things to the car, and it still drives like a dream with no issues, as long as I keep up with regular maintenance. Thanks for listening!

Great car that you've had since new. You've never had any problems with anything. Just keep up with regular fluid changes, filters, and lube and she's ready to go. It's great to hear that it was a daily driver for the first 4 years and now it's a garage queen that only comes out when the weather is nice. It must be a fun car to drive!

The Ford Mustang is an excellent car at an even better price, in my opinion. I've had mine for a little over a year now, and it has given me no major problems whatsoever. The power coming from the 3.8-liter V6 is good, and the comfort of the front seats is excellent. I would recommend a Mustang like mine to anyone who wants something powerful, cheap, good-looking, and fun to drive.

I purchased my 1998 GT in May of 2001 with only 21,000 miles. I have made many modifications to my jet black pony and I enjoy leaving Camaros and slow imports in the dust. The car is built exceptionally well and can certainly handle a lot of wear and tear. I have not experienced any issues with my car and I appreciate the compliments and thumbs up I receive every time I take it for a spin. I highly recommend a Mustang GT or Cobra (like my brother's) over a Camaro or any import.

I bought this 98 GT used with 10k miles, and it has been an absolute pleasure to own it. I originally had purchased the V6 but traded up to the V8 for the extra power. If you're going to own a Mustang, you have to go for the GT. Aside from all the stereotypical BS that some close-minded people say about Fords, I have to say that this car has been incredibly reliable (knock on wood) and an amazing ride. I definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a fun, reliable, and powerful vehicle that gives you freedom, independence, and joy.
