It also competed with the Plymouth Barracuda, which was launched around the same time. The Mustang also had an effect on designs of coupes worldwide, leading to the marketing of the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri in the United States (the latter, by Lincoln-Mercury). The Mercury Cougar was launched in 1967 as a unique-bodied higher-trim alternative to the Mustang; during the 1970s, it included more features and was marketed as a personal luxury car.

From 1965 until 2004, the Mustang shared chassis commonality with other Ford model lines, staying rear-wheel-drive throughout its production. From 1965 to 1973, the Mustang was derived from the 1960 Ford Falcon compact. From 1974 until 1978, the Mustang (denoted Mustang II) was a longer-wheelbase version of the Ford Pinto. From 1979 until 2004, the Mustang shared its Fox platform chassis with 14 other Ford vehicles (becoming the final one to use the Fox architecture). Since 2005, Ford has produced two generations of the Mustang, each using a distinct platform unique to the model line.

Through its production, multiple nameplates have been associated with the Ford Mustang series, including GT, Mach 1, Boss 302/429, Cobra (separate from Shelby Cobra), and Bullitt, along with "5.0" fender badging (denoting 4.9 L OHV or 5.0 L DOHC V8 engines).

  • Summary: On June 18, 2023, my throttle unexpectedly stuck open after intentional acceleration, causing the car to continue to accelerate uncontrollably after releasing the accelerator pedal. The engine continued to increase RPMs and speed. After using all of my leg strength to apply the brakes to fight the uncontrolled acceleration, the throttle unexpectedly eased up and returned to normal. This was the most frightening instance. On two other occasions, I noticed similar uncontrolled acceleration that seemed to correct itself immediately after shifting, where the tachometer approached 5k RPMs. I have not had the vehicle inspected, and there were no warning lamps, or other symptoms prior to this failure.

I have went through 4 batteries, 1 alternator, several flat bed truck tows, and weeks into service at my local Ford dealer - only to have the dealership continue to tell me how difficult it is to find 'parasitic' amp draw because it is intermittent. My wife has had it being stuck and now afraid to drive the car, and contemplating to get rid of it. I work for a major tier 1 automotive supplier in engineering and know how my company pays special attention to NHTSA complaints and investigations relating to our products. I am hopeful that Ford engineering will get a hold of me and get this right before I take the Mustang to the scrap yard!

THE AIR BAG DEPLOYED "AFTER" AND "LATE". THIS AIRBAG WAS PART OF A FORD RECALL AND HAD BEEN REPLACED AT OUR LOCAL DEALERSHIP. ADDITIONALLY, THE VEHICLE HAD THE BRAKE SYSTEM SERVICED IN DECEMBER OF 2018 AND WE HAD INFORMED THE DEALERSHIP OF BRAKE SYSTEM FEELING "SPONGY". THE DEALERSHIP COULD NOT FIND ANY ISSUES WITH THE SYSTEM.

IT'S BEEN A WEEK WITH NO RESPONSE FROM CORPORATE OR THE DEALERSHIP. I'M CONCERNED THAT IF AND WHEN THE REPAIR IS DONE, WILL THE REPAIR BE DONE CORRECTLY AND WILL THE CAR BE SAFE TO DRIVE.   • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2005-2014 Mustang, 2004-2011 Ranger, 2009-2011 Mercury Milan, 2006 Ford GT, 2008-2012 Fusion, 2007-2010 Edge and Lincoln MKX, and 2009-2010 Lincoln MKZ vehicles. These vehicles may be equipped with a driver or passenger frontal air bag inflator used as a replacement service part, that may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the frontal air bag, an inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver and passenger air bag module, and replace either the module or the inflator, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 17, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21S05.

    Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share a story with you about my car. I drive 50 miles each way to work and I traded my 01 Accord for an 06 Mustang back in 2008. I've taken great care of my car, changing the oil every 3K miles and keeping it well-maintained. However, after 80k miles, the engine started making a knocking noise and I noticed a significant loss of power. I was worried, but I took it to Ford to get it checked out. Unfortunately, they quoted me $4,100 to fix what they called a cam phaser issue (pumps oil to the top end of the motor). I wasn't sure what to do, but I didn't want to spend that much money on my daily driver. So, I took it to a performance shop, who said it needed a new motor for $4,800. Yikes! Before you buy a car, make sure to research cam phasers. This appears to be an issue in many Fords. Take care!

    I'm 37 years old and I've only ever owned GM cars or trucks. I've always preferred REAR-wheel drive vehicles, and I found that the 2006 Ford Mustang was the best value for my money. I opted for the V-6 (my first - I've always owned v-8's) due to the rising fuel costs. The Mustang handles well and accelerates almost as well as my '95 Formula Firebird. Ford really did their homework well in putting together a car that captures what sports cars should look and handle like. GM - you better wake up and get the Camaro back out before you lose all your sports car followers. Let's face it, the Corvette is just too highly priced. Long live the Mustang.

    I'm so glad I bought the Mustang! It looks amazing and performs even better. The handling and acceleration are fantastic, and don't even get me started on the incredible sound! The only minor issues I've had are that the seat belt receiver is a bit hard to reach and the interior scratches easily.
