1991 Ford Mustang problems
The Ford Mustang is a series of American automobiles manufactured by Ford. In continuous production since 1964, the Mustang is currently the longest-produced Ford car nameplate. Currently in its seventh generation, it is the fifth-best selling Ford car nameplate. The namesake of the "pony car" automobile segment, the Mustang was developed as a highly styled line of sporty coupes and convertibles derived from existing model lines, initially distinguished by "long hood, short deck" proportions.
Originally predicted to sell 100,000 vehicles yearly, the 1965 Mustang became the most successful vehicle launch since the 1927 Model A. Introduced on April 17, 1964 (16 days after the Plymouth Barracuda), over 400,000 units were sold in its first year; the one-millionth Mustang was sold within two years of its launch. In August 2018, Ford produced the 10-millionth Mustang; matching the first 1965 Mustang, the vehicle was a 2019 Wimbledon White convertible with a V8 engine.
The success of the Mustang launch led to multiple competitors from other American manufacturers, including the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird (1967), AMC Javelin (1968), and Dodge Challenger (1970). It also competed with the Plymouth Barracuda, which was launched around the same time. The Mustang also had an effect on designs of coupes worldwide, leading to the marketing of the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri in the United States (the latter, by Lincoln-Mercury). The Mercury Cougar was launched in 1967 as a unique-bodied higher-trim alternative to the Mustang; during the 1970s, it included more features and was marketed as a personal luxury car.
From 1965 until 2004, the Mustang shared chassis commonality with other Ford model lines, staying rear-wheel-drive throughout its production. From 1965 to 1973, the Mustang was derived from the 1960 Ford Falcon compact. From 1974 until 1978, the Mustang (denoted Mustang II) was a longer-wheelbase version of the Ford Pinto. From 1979 until 2004, the Mustang shared its Fox platform chassis with 14 other Ford vehicles (becoming the final one to use the Fox architecture). Since 2005, Ford has produced two generations of the Mustang, each using a distinct platform unique to the model line.
Through its production, multiple nameplates have been associated with the Ford Mustang series, including GT, Mach 1, Boss 302/429, Cobra (separate from Shelby Cobra), and Bullitt, along with "5.0" fender badging (denoting 4.9 L OHV or 5.0 L DOHC V8 engines).

Common 1991 Ford Mustang problems
The 1991 Ford Mustang, like many other vehicles, has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:
- Engine Problems: The 1991 Ford Mustang has been known to have engine problems. These issues can range from minor inconveniences to major failures. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help extend the life of the engine, but it's a common complaint among Mustang owners.
- Rust Issues: The 1991 Ford Mustang, particularly those made from 2002 to 2009, is prone to rust due to the aluminum hoods. If the hood is not repainted in time, the rust can spread to other parts of the vehicle. This issue led to a class-action lawsuit against Ford, although it was later dismissed.
- Battery Drainage: Another common problem with the 1991 Ford Mustang is battery drainage. This can be caused by loose or damaged connections, or by power being sent to components that shouldn't be charged when the engine is shut off, leading to a parasitic drain.
- Transmission Problems: Mustang transmissions are generally considered durable, but they can still have issues. These include sticking in gear, jumping out of gear, and making noise. Once the exact problem is identified, informed repair decisions can be made.
- Leaks: Leaks from under the hood, cabin, and even under the car are common in the 1991 Ford Mustang. These leaks can involve hot oil from transmission tubes and can lead to serious issues if not addressed promptly.
- Airbag Problems: The 2006 Ford Mustang has had over three million units recalled due to airbag problems. The passenger frontal airbag inflator can rupture easily, leading to metal particles striking occupants and causing injuries. There have also been reports of side airbags not deploying when needed.
- Faulty Instrument Panel: The speedometer in the 1991 Ford Mustang is mechanical, unlike other parts that are electrical. When it's faulty, it can lead to not knowing how fast you're going, which can have fatal consequences.
- Service Brake Failure: Brake problems are a serious concern in any vehicle, and the 1991 Ford Mustang is no exception. Issues include a soft brake pedal, shaky steering wheel, and squeaking noises. If the brake pedal feels like stepping on a plum and hits the floor with very little resistance, it's a sign of a serious problem that needs to be fixed immediately.
- Body/Paint Problems: According to CarComplaints.com, the worst problem category for the Ford Mustang is body/paint problems. The 2010 model year is rated as the worst due to higher repair costs and more problems at lower mileage.
- Squeaking Noise While Turning: This issue is often caused by worn outer tie rod ends. It's a common problem that can be addressed by replacing the worn parts.
These are just some of the common problems reported by owners of the 1991 Ford Mustang. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help prevent many of these issues, but it's important to be aware of them when considering purchasing or owning this vehicle.

You won't believe it, but I paid only $800 for this car! And let me tell you, it has turned out to be the very best used car I have ever owned. When I first bought it, I replaced the front bearings, but since then, I haven't had a single problem with it. It gets great mileage, although it's a bit rusty. Everyone around me keeps asking me how much I want for it, but it has been such a good car that I just can't let it go. I tell them $1200, and they laugh, so I just keep on driving my stang.
Donato Welch 2024-02-18
If you're searching for a dependable used car, this is the one. It has very few issues as long as you maintain it. The only time it will cost you money is if you constantly upgrade its performance, which is usually the case.
