The Ford Mustang is a series of American automobiles manufactured by Ford. In continuous production since 1964, the Mustang is currently the longest-produced Ford car nameplate. Currently in its seventh generation, it is the fifth-best selling Ford car nameplate. The namesake of the "pony car" automobile segment, the Mustang was developed as a highly styled line of sporty coupes and convertibles derived from existing model lines, initially distinguished by "long hood, short deck" proportions.

Originally predicted to sell 100,000 vehicles yearly, the 1965 Mustang became the most successful vehicle launch since the 1927 Model A. Introduced on April 17, 1964 (16 days after the Plymouth Barracuda), over 400,000 units were sold in its first year; the one-millionth Mustang was sold within two years of its launch. In August 2018, Ford produced the 10-millionth Mustang; matching the first 1965 Mustang, the vehicle was a 2019 Wimbledon White convertible with a V8 engine.

The success of the Mustang launch led to multiple competitors from other American manufacturers, including the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird (1967), AMC Javelin (1968), and Dodge Challenger (1970). It also competed with the Plymouth Barracuda, which was launched around the same time. The Mustang also had an effect on designs of coupes worldwide, leading to the marketing of the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri in the United States (the latter, by Lincoln-Mercury). The Mercury Cougar was launched in 1967 as a unique-bodied higher-trim alternative to the Mustang; during the 1970s, it included more features and was marketed as a personal luxury car.

From 1965 until 2004, the Mustang shared chassis commonality with other Ford model lines, staying rear-wheel-drive throughout its production. From 1965 to 1973, the Mustang was derived from the 1960 Ford Falcon compact. From 1974 until 1978, the Mustang (denoted Mustang II) was a longer-wheelbase version of the Ford Pinto. From 1979 until 2004, the Mustang shared its Fox platform chassis with 14 other Ford vehicles (becoming the final one to use the Fox architecture). Since 2005, Ford has produced two generations of the Mustang, each using a distinct platform unique to the model line.

Through its production, multiple nameplates have been associated with the Ford Mustang series, including GT, Mach 1, Boss 302/429, Cobra (separate from Shelby Cobra), and Bullitt, along with "5.0" fender badging (denoting 4.9 L OHV or 5.0 L DOHC V8 engines).

Common 2003 Ford Mustang problems

The 2003 Ford Mustang has been known to have several common problems, primarily related to engine cooling, powertrain, and body paint.

One of the most reported issues is engine cooling problems, which are the leading cause of complaints on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) page for the 2003 Mustang.

Powertrain problems are also common, with 40 powertrain complaints on file, which is higher than average for a 20-year-old vehicle. Drivers are reporting trouble shifting and cars getting stuck in park or reverse, often due to how people drive the Mustang, a muscle car designed for high performance.

Body paint problems are another common issue, with many 2003 Mustang owners observing paint blistering around their bumpers and severe peeling and chipping off the front edge of the hood. This problem is related to the paint blistering exhibited by some units of the 2007 and 2010 Ford Mustang, which arose because Ford used aluminum hoods but failed to properly insulate them from iron-based connecting and supporting parts used in the prior model year.

Lastly, the 2003 Ford Mustang has had 6 recalls and 263 complaints on file with the NHTSA, which is below average for a 20-year-old vehicle.

These issues, while common, do not necessarily reflect the overall reliability of the 2003 Ford Mustang, which is generally reliable and enjoys above-average reliability, with some of its model years scoring better than others.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-27
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1FAFP44433F
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Date of incident....sometime over night 1/27/24. Vehicle FIRE I believe started in electrical components. Happened overnight while PARKED in front of home in parking lot Melted left side of dash (all odometer area) and center console where AC controls and radio are. Shattered front windshield which was black with soot, as well as the plastic frame around front area of convertible top. Fire has somehow extinguished itself. Whole interior car full of soot. I had actually used my key FOB to enter my car at which time I noticed what had happened & all the damage. I immediately disconnected my battery. The engine did not look damaged. The fire seemed to have stayed behind firewall. My insurance company TOTALED my car out due to the fact of it being an ELECTRICAL CAUSE TO FIRE & even if it could've been repaired, was told parts (dash, odometer area which was COMPLETELY melted) were obsolete. Regardless, the car now has posed a serious DANGER. I have photos & totaled decision by insurance company information, but have been unable to upload on your site. I believe you should REALLY SEE THE PICTURES. After incident, I searched to see if there had been any recalls. I found a couple incidents of this happening to others with their 2003 MUSTANGS & am wondering why this had never been investigated. If I had known about a problem of electrical fires, this car would NOT have been purchased in 2017. I don't understand why this problem wasn't researched. It could've been so much worse as I had a FULL TANK OF GAS.

  • Summary: WE HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH THIS CAR SINCE IT WAS BOUGHT NEW. ALL ISSUES HAVE BEEN LOOKED AT BY THE DEALER DURING THE FACTORY WARRANTY AND STILL REMAIN UNRESOLVED. I HAVE WRITTEN A LETTER TO FORD HEADQUARTERS BUT THEY SENT A COMPLETE REJECTION LETTER. I WAS TOLD TODAY BY A FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE TO FILE A COMPLAINT HERE. I CAN SUPPLY DOCUMENTS AND THE ORIGINAL LETTER TO FORD IF NEEDED. THE MAIN ISSUES FROM PURCHASING NEW AND DRIVING OFF THE LOT ARE (IN ROUGH ORDER OF IMPORTANCE): -MAJOR PAINT AND CLEAR COAT ISSUES (BROUGHT TO DEALER TWO DAYS AFTER PURCHASE TO COMPLAIN. THEY HAVE NEVER RESOLVED PROBLEM AND IT HAS CONTINUED TO GET WORSE TO THIS DAY.) -DRIVER DOOR WINDOW STOPS WORKING INTERMITTENTLY. -CAR ENGINE SURGING MAKING CAR LURCH FORWARD (MY WIFE WAS INVOLVED IN A MINOR ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF THIS. IT WAS REPORTED TO INSURANCE.) -ENGINE ACTS LIKE IT WANTS TO STALL WHEN TURNING STEERING WHEEL IN REVERSE. -HEADLIGHT LENSES COMPLETELY CLOUDED EARLY ON (HAVE HAD TO HAVE RESTORATION DONE TO HEADLIGHTS SEVERAL TIMES.) -ENGINE SOUNDS LIKE DIESEL WHEN AMBIENT TEMPERATURE IS HIGH. -BULGE IN SEAL ABOVE WINDSHIELD FRAME WHERE CONVERTIBLE TOP SEATS AGAINST IT. -STEREO INTERFERENCE (LOUD CONTINUOUS BUZZING SOUND.) -AC THUMP (HIGH PRESSURE COOLANT LINE HITS FIREWALL WHEN COMPRESSOR STARTS.) -DRIVER DOOR RATTLE (AFTER THE WINDOW WAS WORKED ON BUT WAS NOT FIXED.) -LIGHT BURNED OUT IN AC PANEL (OCCURRED AFTER STEREO WAS REPLACE TO TRY TO ELIMINATE INTERFERENCE, BUT WAS NOT RESOLVED.) WE HAVE MAINTAINED AND KEPT OUR LOW MILEAGE MUSTANG IN EXCELLENT CONDITION OTHERWISE. WE DON'T KNOW WHERE TO GO FROM HERE. THANK YOU *TR

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-12-01
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING MY VEHICLE ON THE INTERSTATE I HEARD WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A POPPING SOUND AND THEN EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF POWER. I EXITED OFF THE INTERSTATE AND BEGAN DRIVING AGAIN. MY VEHICLE FELT AS IF MY TORQUE CONVERTER WAS SLIPPING AND THAT POWER WAS REDUCED FROM THE MOTOR. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL SERVICE MECHANIC WHO ADVISED ME THAT THE 3RD CYLINDER SPARK PLUG HAD SOMEHOW BACKED ITSELF OUT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD WHICH WAS CAUSING A LOSS OF POWER TO THAT CYLINDER. IT ALSO WAS STILL RECEIVING POWER VIA THE COIL PACK WHICH IN TURN MELTED THE RUBBER BOOT AND FRIED THE COIL PACK FOR THAT CYLINDER. THE RUBBER FROM THE BOOT RAN DOWN INTO THE SPARK PLUG AND FILLED THE HOLE. I HAD TO REPLACE BOTH THE PUG BOOT AND COIL PACK FOR THE 3RD CYLINDER ALONG WITH THE LABOR OF REMOVING MELTED RUBBER FROM THE SPARK PLUG HOLE AND CYLINDER HEAD. *JS

  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: PASSENGER SEAT BELT STARTED STICKING AND BEING HARD TO PULL OUT IN 2005, I TOOK IT BACK TO DEALERSHIP THEY STATED IT WAS OK, I HARDLY USED THAT PASSENGER SEATBELT BECAUSE I USUALLY DRIVE ALONE. IN 2009 IT GOT STUCK IN THE HOLDER AND I COULD NOT PULL IT OUT, AT THAT POINT THE FORD DEALERSHIP WANTED OVER $300.00 TO REPLACE THEIR ALREADY DEFECTED SEATBELT. I CHECKED JUNKYARDS IN THREE DIFFERENT STATES AND ALL THE 2003 FORD MUSTANG PASSENGER SEATBELTS WAS BROKEN. MY HEADLIGHT COVER IS MADE OF SOME SORT OF SUBSTANDARD PLASTIC THAT FOGGED UP AND MADE IT DIFFICULT TO SEE CLEARLY AND PLUS IT CAUSES MY CAR TO FAILS INSPECTION. FORD DEALERSHIP REQUESTED THAT I PAY THEM OVER $600.00 TO REPLACE HEADLIGHTS WITH MORE DETECTED HEADLIGHT. I CALL FORD HEADQUARTER TO NO AVAIL. HEADLIGHTS AND SEATBELT ARE VERY IMPORTANT TOOLS FOR SAFETY ON THE ROAD AND AS LONG AS THE CAR MANUFACTURER CAN GET AWAY WITH WEIGHTING THE ODDS* WITH PEOPLE LIVES WE ARE ALL IN DANGER!!!!! * ANALYZING IF IT IS CHEATER TO RECALL VEHICLES OR TO PAID THE LAWSUITS IN THE EVENT OF INJURIES OR DEATHS. *TR

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-08-20
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS
  • Summary: AS AN OVERWEIGHT 6'9" CITIZEN AND PHD SCIENTIST, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT SAFETY TESTS ARE DONE FOR PEOPLE THAT DEVIATE FROM A NORMAL SIZE AND WEIGHT. I UNDERSTAND THAT SAFETY TESTS ARE DONE FOR CHILDREN, BUT WHAT ABOUT PEOPLE THAT ARE VERY TALL, OR AS IT IS AN INCREASING PROBLEM IN THE US, PEOPLE THAT ARE VERY OBESE? MY SEAT BELT TOUCHES MY NECK RATHER THAN GOING OVER MY SHOULDER, POTENTIALLY EXPOSING ME TO NECK INJURIES. THE PASSENGER AIRBAGS WILL IMPACT MY KNEES RATHER THAN MY BODY, AND THERE IS NO NECK SUPPORT FROM MY HEADREST. I AM QUITE CONCERNED THAT I COULD BE SEVERELY INJURED IN AN ACCIDENT SINCE VEHICLES ARE NOT PROPERLY TESTED TO SUPPORT TALL AND/OR OVERWEIGHT INDIVIDUALS. PRESUMABLY THE NHTSA AND NTSB COULD BE HELD LIABLE FOR A LACK OF SUCH TESTING WERE SOMEONE INJURED IN AN ACCIDENT. EVEN NEGLECTING SAFETY INFORMATION, SOMEONE WHO IS 6'9" SUCH AS MYSELF WILL NOT FIT INTO MOST VEHICLES, AND ONLY SOME VEHICLES WITH AMPLE LEG/HEAD ROOM ARE SAFE FOR ME TO DRIVE COMFORTABLY. *TR

LUCKILY TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT DURING THE TIME I WAS DRIVING. I ENDED UP GETTING PUSHED OFF THE FREEWAY BY THE CHP. I HAD TO TOW THE CAR TO THE DEALER, AND THE SERVICE ADVISOR STATED TO ME, THAT A WIRING HARNESS THAT WAS MOUNTED ABOVE THE CAT CONVERTER, AND THE WIRE SHORTED OUT. WHATEVER WAS HOLDING THE WIRE IN PLACE MUST HAVE CAME OFF, AND THAT OVER TIME THE WIRE SHORTED OUT BECAUSE THE WIRE HARNESS WAS RESTING ON THE VERY HOT SURFACE OF THE CAT CONVERTER. THE DEALER TOOK PICTURES, AND I COULD NOT BELIEVE THAT THEY PUT SUCH A VITAL WIRE HARNESS DIRECTLY ABOVE SOMETHING THAT GETS EXTREMELY HOT. I WAS LUCKY, BUT SOMEONE ELSE MY NOT BE SO LUCKY. NO WARNING LIGHTS AND A CAR JUST SHUTS COMPLETELY DOWN WHILE DRIVING. I HOPE YOU WILL LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE AND NOT JUST THE YEAR AND MODEL OF MY CAR. THIS MUST BE RECALLED BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT OR KILLED. *TR

Positive 2003 Ford Mustang car reviews

This car has been a great experience so far, with only minor issues such as unexpected chassis flex. The standard radio/6 CD changer is impressive, even at freeway speeds with the top down. The top fits much better than my 1986 GT Conv. I was pleasantly surprised to find very little tire road noise inside the cabin, even less than my friend's 2004 Accord. The ride is surprisingly quiet with the top up. While the fuel economy (18.4 mpg) is not the best, I can't complain since my foot can be very heavy at times. At least it uses 89 octane. Although it's not as fast as my WRX, it's definitely a hit with the ladies. Overall, I highly recommend this car as an example of current Ford quality!

Great car! I'm so glad to see that Ford has brought the Mustang back to supercar status with 390hp/390ftlb. With a few modifications, you can have a car that will outperform any old Z06 and save yourself at least $10,000. Plus, unlike the Corvettes, there is no electronic steering column lock to short out, which means you can start your car and turn the wheel without any issues. My buddy has had 3 replaced! The Cobra can take any turn you throw at it, thanks to its 9

Great car, especially when you live in Southern California and drive with the top down most of the year! I love the way it handles, although I wish the GT suspension wasn't as hard riding, especially over country roads. There are some minor rattles, but this is a convertible. A real plus is that the V-8 engine uses regular fuel! That is a big savings just in itself! I would definitely buy another down the road!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Mustang. I've been driving it for the past three years and it has been an absolute joy. Not only does it turn heads, but it also provides the get-up-and-go needed for passing on the interstate. Additionally, it has decent mileage for a sports car, averaging 20mpg in town and on the highway. I have never had even the slightest problem with the reliability of this vehicle. However, I do have a couple of concerns. Living in the Midwest, where we can get a few feet of snow at a time, the RWD and light overall weight of the car just isn't safe enough, even in town on snow-packed streets. Also, for long drives, even my young back begins to hurt. Despite these minor criticisms, I still absolutely love my Mustang!

This is my second Mustang. I traded my 1999 GT for this Stang and although I regretted getting rid of it, I couldn't resist this MACH I. The ride is much improved, quieter, and the bigger brakes and traction control really improve handling. The shaker hood and low V8 rumble turn a lot of heads. This car has a 'Don't mess with me' kind of look to it. The only problems I've found were a non-functional windshield washer pump and a cracked headlamp cover, which were promptly replaced by my local Ford dealership.
