1993 Ford Mustang problems
The Ford Mustang is a series of American automobiles manufactured by Ford. In continuous production since 1964, the Mustang is currently the longest-produced Ford car nameplate. Currently in its seventh generation, it is the fifth-best selling Ford car nameplate. The namesake of the "pony car" automobile segment, the Mustang was developed as a highly styled line of sporty coupes and convertibles derived from existing model lines, initially distinguished by "long hood, short deck" proportions.
Originally predicted to sell 100,000 vehicles yearly, the 1965 Mustang became the most successful vehicle launch since the 1927 Model A. Introduced on April 17, 1964 (16 days after the Plymouth Barracuda), over 400,000 units were sold in its first year; the one-millionth Mustang was sold within two years of its launch. In August 2018, Ford produced the 10-millionth Mustang; matching the first 1965 Mustang, the vehicle was a 2019 Wimbledon White convertible with a V8 engine.
The success of the Mustang launch led to multiple competitors from other American manufacturers, including the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird (1967), AMC Javelin (1968), and Dodge Challenger (1970). It also competed with the Plymouth Barracuda, which was launched around the same time. The Mustang also had an effect on designs of coupes worldwide, leading to the marketing of the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri in the United States (the latter, by Lincoln-Mercury). The Mercury Cougar was launched in 1967 as a unique-bodied higher-trim alternative to the Mustang; during the 1970s, it included more features and was marketed as a personal luxury car.
From 1965 until 2004, the Mustang shared chassis commonality with other Ford model lines, staying rear-wheel-drive throughout its production. From 1965 to 1973, the Mustang was derived from the 1960 Ford Falcon compact. From 1974 until 1978, the Mustang (denoted Mustang II) was a longer-wheelbase version of the Ford Pinto. From 1979 until 2004, the Mustang shared its Fox platform chassis with 14 other Ford vehicles (becoming the final one to use the Fox architecture). Since 2005, Ford has produced two generations of the Mustang, each using a distinct platform unique to the model line.
Through its production, multiple nameplates have been associated with the Ford Mustang series, including GT, Mach 1, Boss 302/429, Cobra (separate from Shelby Cobra), and Bullitt, along with "5.0" fender badging (denoting 4.9 L OHV or 5.0 L DOHC V8 engines).

Common 1993 Ford Mustang problems
The 1993 Ford Mustang, like any other car, is prone to certain common problems that owners have reported over the years. Here are some of the most frequent issues found in these vehicles:
- Lack of Cup Holders: Ford did not include cup holders in the Fox Body Mustang, making it difficult to securely hold beverages during long drives or cruises. Late Model Restoration was the first to market with a non-universal solution for adding a cup holder to the 1987-93 Mustang.
- Worn-Out Headlights: Headlights can wear down due to road debris, UV rays, harsh cleaners, and heat from incandescent bulbs, causing them to leak or get a hazy finish, reducing light output. This issue is more prevalent in the 1987-93 Mustangs with the aero front bumper and headlights.
- Broken Ashtray Door Hinge: The ashtray door hinge is prone to breaking over time, causing the door to flop open or closed. LMR.com offers multiple fixes, including hinge repairs, hinge parts, and replacement ashtray doors.
- Faulty Window Motors: Window motors can wear out over time, causing inoperable windows, which can prevent airflow on nice days and make ordering at drive-thrus more difficult. LMR.com offers complete window regulator motors, bushings, guides, and more to help with DIY installations.
- Broken Door Handles: The OEM door handles are made from hard plastic that can become brittle over time, leading to broken handles. Aftermarket solutions offer metal versions, but they may vary slightly from the OEM handle. LMR.com offers OEM door handles and DIY tech guides for installation.
- Sagging or Loose Doors: The door pins and hinges can wear out, causing excess movement, which accelerates wear on the door striker, weatherstrip, and door latch. This can also cause leaking at the door to the body or top to window weatherstripping. LMR.com offers all the necessary parts to fix this issue.
- Oxidized or Damaged OEM Wheels: The 1993 Ford Mustang came with 4-lug wheels from Ford on almost all variants. Over the years, OEM wheels can become oxidized and damaged, with no way to replace the whole wheel. LMR's in-house brand 5.0 Resto has developed OEM-style replacement wheels to keep your Mustang looking like new.
- Door Lock Actuators: The door lock actuators are prone to breaking more than once on these cars. This issue is one of the most common problems reported by owners.
- Water Pump and Rear Main Seal: The water pump and rear main seal are known to fail in the 1987-1993 5.0 Mustangs. These issues are common and can lead to significant repairs if not addressed promptly.
- T5 Transmission and AOD Transmission: The T5 transmission can experience problems with reverse and third gear, while the AOD transmission may have issues with downshifting. These problems can affect the car's performance and drivability.
- Limited Slip Differential (Trak Lok): The Trak Lok differential can have issues, which may affect the car's handling and performance. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these problems.
- Steering Links: Steering links can break when hitting a pothole or driving on a rough road, which can lead to steering issues and affect the car's handling.
These common problems should be considered when purchasing, owning, or maintaining a 1993 Ford Mustang. Regular inspections, maintenance, and timely repairs can help ensure the car's longevity and performance.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 1998-01-01
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
- Summary: I BOUGHT A 93 MUSTANG 4 CYLINDER WITH 12,000 MILES ON IT IN 12\93. THE CAR NOW ONLY HAS 28,000 MILES ON IT TOTAL. THE DOOR LOCKS DO NOT WORK, THE HATCHBACK LATCH DOESN'T ENGAGE CORRECTLY, WHEN I GO TO LOCK THE IGNITION SWITCH, I HAVE TO CONTINUALLY JIGGLE THE GEARSHIFTER BEFORE THE IGNITION SWITCH WILL LOCK, AND THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM HAS A LEAK IN IT SOMEWHERE. THESE PROBLEMS STARTED OCCURRING IN JUNE OF 2000, BUT DUE TO WARRANTY ONLY BEING GOOD FOR 3 YEARS, THE DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO FIX THE PROBLEMS UNLESS I PAID FOR THE REPAIRS, EVEN THOUGH THE CAR ONLY HAD ~ 17,000 MILES ON IT AT THAT TIME. THE PAINT STARTED FADING OUT IN 1998. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: 1993 FORD MUSTANG IGNITION SYSTEM FIRE VEHICLE WAS IN GARAGE AFTER BEING DRIVEN THE DAY BEFORE. ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE AND THERE WAS NO RESPONSE FROM THE STARTER THEN SMOKE CAME FROM UNDER THE STEERING WHEEL FROM IGNITION WIRES BURNING UNDER THE STEERING WHEEL. I WAS ABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE WITH A CLOTH AND I NOTICED THAT THE COATING ON THE WIRES UNDER THE WHEEL WERE BURNT OFF AND THE WIRE WAS CHARRED WHICH HAS RENDERED THE VEHICLE INOPERABLE. AFTER SEARCHING THE WEB I NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON MY VEHICLE FOR THE VERY PROBLEM THAT I EXPERIENCED (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 96V071000) I CONTACTED THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT MY VEHICLE (EARLY 1993 MODEL) WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AND SINCE IT WAS OVER 10 YEARS OLD THEY WOULD NOT FIX IT ANYWAY UNDER THE RECALL. I HAVE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH FORD'S CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE AND NEED TO WAIT FOR THEIR RESPONSE. SO FAR THE FORD DEALERSHIPS LACK OF CONCERN OF THE SERIOUSNESS OF THIS ISSUE ASTOUNDS ME. MY GARAGE COULD HAVE BURNED DOWN PEOPLE COULD HAVE BEEN INJURED ETC. *JB

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2001-02-18
- VIN: 1FACP40E4PF
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: STUCK GAS PEDAL THROTTLE LINKAGE CAUSING CONTINUOUS FULL THROTTLE TRANSMISSION KICK DOWN CABLE ON 1993 FORD MUSTANG 5.0 LX MUSTANG THAT CONTROLS FLUID DELIVERY TO TRANSMISSION OVERDRIVE AND IS ATTACHED TO THROTTLE CONTROLS BY A GROMMET CAME OFF AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE GROMMET FAILED PROBABLY DUE TO AGE, AND THE TRANSMISSION DESTROYS THE OVERDRIVE PORTION OF ITS SELF LEAVING THE DRIVER ONLY ABLE TO GO APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH IN OVERDRIVE POSITION AND ANYTHING OVER THE SHIFTING SPEED INTO OVERDRIVE JUST LETS THE ENGINE RPM RUN AWAY AND THE TRANSMISSION TO SLIP. THE REAL PROBLEM THEN OCCURS IF THE DRIVER USES THE DRIVE POSITION TO GET THE VEHICLE BACK TO HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND NO SLIPPING OF THE TRANSMISSION. IF THE ACCELERATOR IS PUSHED CLOSE TO THE FLOOR, IT ALLOWS THE NOW FLOATING FREE KICK DOWN CABLE TO JAM THE THROTTLE TO FULL OPEN CAUSING A STUCK ACCELERATOR AND THE ONLY WAY TO FREE IT IS TO GET TO NEUTRAL QUICKLY AND TURN OFF IGNITION SWITCH, THEN UNJAM THE CABLE AND THROTTLE LINKAGE BY HAND. POSSIBLE ACCIDENTS/INJURIES OR DEATHS COULD RESULT, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT HAPPENS FROM A STANDING STOP AT AN INTERSECTION, OR IN MY CASE, A HOUSING 25 MPH RESIDENTIAL ZONE. THE TRANSMISSION HAS TO BE REBUILT AND THE GROMMET KICK DOWN CABLE GROMMET REPLACED. THE OLD GROMMET ON MY VEHICLE IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE. THE CABLE AND GROMMET SHOULD BE ON SOME TYPE OF INSPECTION OR REPLACEMENT SCHEDULE/OR REDESIGNED TO KEEP THIS FROM HAPPENING. I HAVE SEEN TWO OTHER MUSTANGS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM I HAD WITH ONE OF THE VEHICLES BEING DRIVEN BY A YOUNG FEMALE WHO PULLED THE VEHICLE IN TO MY WORK AREA(LOT) WITH A RUN AWAY ENGINE IE STUCK GAS PEDAL. I UNSTUCK HER KICKDOWN CABLE AND GAVE HER ADVICE ON REPAIRS AND WHAT WAS WRONG AND COULD HAPPEN.*JB

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-01-29
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: I'VE CALLED FORD AND MY FORD DEALERS ABOUT THIS. THEY SAY THEY ARE NOT AWARE OF A PROBLEM WITH THE 79-93 MUSTANG. CONSEQUENTLY, THEY DON'T OFFER A FIX EITHER, BUT I'VE DISCOVERED A KERNEL OF TRUTH THAT IS QUITE DIFFERENT WHILE LOOKING AT MUSTANG ACCIDENT FIRES ON THE INTERNET. I DIDN'T FIND MORE THAN A DOZEN REAL EXAMPLES AND ONLY FOUND A FEW PICTURES OF THE BURNT MUSTANGS AND ACTUAL ARTICLES OF SPECIFIC DEAD VICTIMS BUT THE FIRES WERE HORRIBLE AND SOME DIED WHILE OTHERS LIVED WITH SEVERE GASOLINE BURNS ALL OVER THEIR BODIES. THE 79-93 MUSTANGS LIKE MY 93 MUSTANG HAVE GONE UP IN FLAMES WHEN REAR ENDED AT SPEEDS UNDER 50 MPH AND HAVE LEAKED FUEL WHEN HIT UNDER 30 MPH. IRONICALLY, IT APPEARS THAT THE 79-93 MUSTANG IS MORE LIKELY TO GO UP IN FLAMES THAN THE 92-2001 CROWN VICTORIA BECAUSE IT IS MUCH LIGHTER AND FLIMSIER THAN THE FULL FRAMED CROWN VIC WITH ITS HUGE FULL SIZE TRUNK. THE MUSTANG GAS TANK IS ONLY A FEW INCHES FROM THE BUMPER, AND IT'S SANDWICHED BETWEEN THE REAR AXLE AND THE ACTUAL SHEET METAL OF THE MUSTANG BODY. IT'S ACTUALLY LESS THAN AN INCH FROM THE SHEET METAL IN THE BACK AND ONLY A FEW INCHES FROM THE AXLE IN THE FRONT. I'VE HAD TWO FAST-SPILLING FUEL LEAKS TWICE IN SIX MONTHS WITHOUT EVER BEING REAR ENDED. I'VE OBSERVED THAT THE GAS CAN MIGRATE UNDER THE TANK WHERE THE LEAK IS AND EVEN CLIMB UP THE SIDES OF THE TANK AND ANY METAL IT COMES IN CONTACT WITH. FROM THIS OBSERVATION, I UNDERSTAND IT MIGHT BE POSSIBLE FOR THE GASOLINE TO IGNITE IF IT COMES IN CONTACT WITH A SPARK UNDER THE CAR OR THE HEAT FROM THE EXHAUST PIPE. I UNDERSTAND THE 93 MUSTANG IS VERY LIKELY TO SPILL GAS WHEN HIT OVER 30 MPH, AND IT CAN ALSO SPILL GAS WHEN HIT AT LOWER SPEEDS, BASED ON TESTS AVAILABLE FROM THE NHTSA. I WISH FORD WITH COME OUT WITH A STRONGER SMALLER SAFETY GAS TANK TO REPLACE THE STANDARD 15 GALLON TANK WOULD BE ABLE TO WITHSTAND SUCH COLLISIONS AND WOULD NOT LEAK FUEL FROM THE FILLER PIPE. *JB

Your LX sounds like an amazing car! It's great to hear that after 13 years and 87,000 miles, it's still going strong. It's impressive that you've only had minor mechanical problems, and it's clear that you take good care of it. The acceleration sounds fantastic, and it must be a lot of fun to drive. It's a shame that there are no cupholders, but that's a minor issue. The Ram-Air Hood and Ram-Air Kit with a K&N air filter sound like great modifications. It's no surprise that people still ask if you're willing to sell it, but I'm glad to hear that you're not! Keep driving it until the wheels fall off!

I purchased my 93 GT with 77K miles after selling my 89 Camaro IROC-Z. The Mustang was comparable to my Camaro in stock form, but with the 5-speed and a few basic bolt-ons, it undoubtedly outperforms it. The gears are well-matched, making driving a lot of fun, although it doesn't quite match the Camaro's top end. The braking is a bit behind, with rear drums, and the suspension has a bit of excessive roll. However, in the 7K miles I've owned it, the only issues I've encountered are a minor sunroof leak and some oil leakage near the crank pulley. Given the age and mileage of the car, I find these issues to be manageable.

After being the sole owner for 11 years and 132K, I just want to say that this has been a very dependable vehicle. The engine is easy to work with and it has only required wear and tear replacements such as batteries and shocks. Although my car did not come with any power windows or locks, they are still working, probably because they are not electrical. With proper maintenance and scheduled fluid replacements, this vehicle just keeps going and going...

I've purchased four Mustang GT Fox Body 5.0's since 1991. It has become my main hobby, and even at 54 years old, I still love these cars despite their inherent flaws and lack of power and technology compared to today's far superior build qualities. Nevertheless, stomping on the gas in my Fox Body is more fun than most cars, and I am biased towards the styling of these cars for sure. With aftermarket support and classic car insurance, the Fox Body Mustang is the most viable choice for a car hobbyist. With the increasing value of a clean, rust-free car, it makes sense to keep them in the family rather than sell them for money, which can always be replaced. A beautiful old car with history is worth hanging on to.

This car is so much fun to drive! I added some after-market high-performance parts and it really made a difference!

This is an excellent car that has been taken good care of, especially for a teenager like myself. It's stylish and turns heads like crazy, making it hella fun to drive. Although the wiring could have been designed better, the minor issues with the automatic windows, locks, and brake lights can be easily fixed. The acceleration may not be the best, but it's still pretty okay for a four-banger. Overall, it's an excellent car for cruising around and I absolutely love it!

I got this car a little over a year ago, and it's my second car. Compared to my first car, the Mustang has twice the power and handling, and I absolutely love it! The unique exterior looks are amazing, and all the other features make it an unbelievable car!

Although I experienced some issues with this car after driving it for about twenty thousand miles, I can confidently say that it has a reliable engine. The transmission, window motors, water pump, exhaust, timing belt, and wires needed repairs, but despite these setbacks, the car has had very few problems overall.
