2016 Ford Mustang problems
The Ford Mustang is a series of American automobiles manufactured by Ford. In continuous production since 1964, the Mustang is currently the longest-produced Ford car nameplate. Currently in its seventh generation, it is the fifth-best selling Ford car nameplate. The namesake of the "pony car" automobile segment, the Mustang was developed as a highly styled line of sporty coupes and convertibles derived from existing model lines, initially distinguished by "long hood, short deck" proportions.
Originally predicted to sell 100,000 vehicles yearly, the 1965 Mustang became the most successful vehicle launch since the 1927 Model A. Introduced on April 17, 1964 (16 days after the Plymouth Barracuda), over 400,000 units were sold in its first year; the one-millionth Mustang was sold within two years of its launch. In August 2018, Ford produced the 10-millionth Mustang; matching the first 1965 Mustang, the vehicle was a 2019 Wimbledon White convertible with a V8 engine.
The success of the Mustang launch led to multiple competitors from other American manufacturers, including the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird (1967), AMC Javelin (1968), and Dodge Challenger (1970). It also competed with the Plymouth Barracuda, which was launched around the same time. The Mustang also had an effect on designs of coupes worldwide, leading to the marketing of the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri in the United States (the latter, by Lincoln-Mercury). The Mercury Cougar was launched in 1967 as a unique-bodied higher-trim alternative to the Mustang; during the 1970s, it included more features and was marketed as a personal luxury car.
From 1965 until 2004, the Mustang shared chassis commonality with other Ford model lines, staying rear-wheel-drive throughout its production. From 1965 to 1973, the Mustang was derived from the 1960 Ford Falcon compact. From 1974 until 1978, the Mustang (denoted Mustang II) was a longer-wheelbase version of the Ford Pinto. From 1979 until 2004, the Mustang shared its Fox platform chassis with 14 other Ford vehicles (becoming the final one to use the Fox architecture). Since 2005, Ford has produced two generations of the Mustang, each using a distinct platform unique to the model line.
Through its production, multiple nameplates have been associated with the Ford Mustang series, including GT, Mach 1, Boss 302/429, Cobra (separate from Shelby Cobra), and Bullitt, along with "5.0" fender badging (denoting 4.9 L OHV or 5.0 L DOHC V8 engines).

Common 2016 Ford Mustang problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 2016 Ford Mustang, several common problems have been reported:
- Corrosion on the Hood: Older model years of the Ford Mustang faced issues with corrosion on the hood, particularly due to aluminum hoods not being properly insulated from iron-based parts. This led to paint blistering in some units of the 2007 and 2010 models. Despite being a known problem, Ford did not issue a recall to address this issue.
- Interior Accessory Problems: Owners reported issues with the radio/sync display, rearview camera, steering assist light, and steering wheel. Problems included the display failing to show useful information, rearview camera malfunctions, and steering-related issues. No recalls were made to resolve these problems.
- Body Paint Problems: Many 2007 Ford Mustang owners reported paint issues like paint blisters around bumpers, severe peeling, and chipping off the hood's front edge. Despite attempts to repair, oxidation issues persisted, making it challenging to fix these paint problems effectively.
- Climate System Problems: A significant issue was the air conditioner not blowing cold air, a problem that typically arises at higher mileage in other cars but occurred early in these Ford Mustang models. Repairs included replacing the coolant, condenser, and eventually the evaporator. While most repairs were covered under warranty, it was still inconvenient for drivers to address this issue.
- Body Integrity Issues: Leaking water into the footwells behind the driver's or passenger's seat due to poorly sealed holes in the door frames was a common problem. Additionally, convertible Mustang owners faced issues with the back window not rolling up completely, leading to water leaks and requiring disassembly of the door for repairs.
These problems highlight various issues faced by owners of the 2016 Ford Mustang, ranging from mechanical concerns like vibration and corrosion to interior and body-related issues like paint problems and climate system malfunctions.

- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Started getting gas filler warnings and check engine light back on again EGR issue. Getting ready for a road trip took vehicle to Ford to troubleshoot check engine light. Identified problem as a cracked fuel tank near where the filler connects. I researched what I can on-line and others have this same issue. Wondering if this is a defect?
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-30
- VIN: 1FA6P8TH1G5
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Ford currently has a TSB (15-0192 idle smoking) out on the Ford Mustang, specifically my car. They know it is an issue, and that several people are having problems with it. But they are not considering it a recall. These cars are having heavy amounts of smoke residuals, which is both damaging to the environment, and to people’s respiratory care as it is blowing major amounts of smoke in the air, and therefore cannot pass an emissions test in my state of Virginia specifically. I believe that Ford knows this is an issue and it should be considered a recall based on current Efficiency and energy standards for vehicles.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-08
- VIN: 1FATP8UH8G5
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The 2016 used car that I bought in 2017 with 20,711 miles has a defective ecoboost engine that leaks coolant on to the cylinder heads & causes engine failure. The vehicle has less than 100,000 miles & is currently in engine failure. Ford knew about this defective engine & never sent me a recall. There are class action lawsuits in CA & DE against FORD for the same ECOBOOST engine in my car. They want to charge me $12,000 for a new engine. I had a 5 year 100,000 mile warranty expire due to 5 yrs expiration & not the mileage, during covid while the car sat in front of the house & was barely driven. Once covid lifted restrictions I drove to Florida & put some miles on it locally & the engine is failing. This is absolutely absurd & Ford should be held accountable & be investigated in the state of MD for consumer fraud. This defective ecoboost engine dates back to 2012. They never should have sold me a car with a defective engine
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-03
- VIN: 1FATP8UH2G5
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: In March 2023 safety recall 22V082000 (Ford Number 22S06) was performed to fix a rear view camera malfunction. During the March 2023 work, only the wiring harness was replaced. My belief was that the actual camera should have been replaced as well. Replacing the wiring harness in March 2023 fixed the issue for 13 months, and then the issue re-occurred. Dealership charged $230 diagnosis fee to tell me that the issue was the camera and now the replacement of the camera cost me the $230 diagnostic fee; The $75 part fee for the camera; and the labor to replace the camera - Total bill out of pocket $530. I was informed after calling the Main Ford Customer service number that my 2016 mustang was not part of the camera recall (only the wiring harness). Camera was only covered with 2015 mustang. Seems odd to me that they make that distinction between model years but it is the same camera and obviously failed on my vehicle. As a major safety concern I believe Ford has failed to support their customers regarding this issue, and a second recall is warranted for the camera portion on 2016 models as well.

I traded my 2004 BMW 325ci for a Ford Mustang and I have no regrets at all. The Mustang has everything the BMW had, but with a much better interior. The performance is on par with any luxury car and it's made in the USA. I highly recommend the Ford Mustang, especially considering its reasonable price for all the features it offers. The V6 engine provides enough power to make it feel like a sports car, and the technology is top-notch. The only downside is that the front seats took some getting used to, and the rear seats are a bit cramped. Overall, I would give it a 9 out of 10. After a year of driving, I still love it just as much as the first day. (Update: After a couple of years) It's now May 2019 and I still love the car. The paint, interior, and instrument panel are all still in perfect condition, thanks to my careful maintenance. The air conditioning evaporator did fail, but it was covered under warranty. Today, in 2020, I still highly recommend this car. I've gotten used to the seats and find them comfortable now. Everything is still great as of November 2020, and I have no regrets about my decision to switch to the Mustang. In fact, I loved it so much that I eventually upgraded to a Mustang GT Premium Package with a shift transmission, and I love it even more now.

that needs a little more low-end punch! NOTE: The review selection only had the 6-speed manual transmission listed. I owned the one with 6-speed automatic transmission. Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2016 2.3L Mustang Eco-boost Premium with 6-speed automatic transmission. I absolutely love this car! The Guard Metallic color is so attractive and I always receive positive compliments on it. The dark saddle interior is also a big plus. I've owned the vehicle for 3 years and have enjoyed it very much. It's my second vehicle that I only drive a couple of days per week and on out-of-town trips. My local driving is a combination of rural roads and interstate. Although I've yet to achieve the rated 32 MPG highway mileage, I'm still averaging ~24 combined MPG. I expect the MPG to increase as the miles build. The handling is great and the performance meets most of my expectations. I HIGHLY recommend vehicles with gas hood/trunk/hatch struts. I also recommend replacing the air in your tires with nitrogen. It provides a more consistent tire pressure over greater temperature changes. The modifications are pretty self-explanatory, therefore I won't talk about them except to say that they have made a big difference. A drop of 300-to-500 vehicle pounds would be a welcome improvement. However, I do wish for better rear end grip and electric boost technology. The trunk size is perfect for my needs and the comfort level is amazing. The cons are gas mileage, handling, cruise control, blind spots, and build quality. But overall, I'm very satisfied with my purchase and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun and comfortable ride. This vehicle would perform even better if it had the engine from the Fusion Sport. However, it is still a very comfortable vehicle for two adults and their luggage. If the large trunk does not provide enough space, you can drop the rear seatbacks to expand the luggage space. This should provide more than enough luggage capacity for weeks of traveling enjoyment. Although it is a good, comfortable, and excellent handling cruiser, it does have some large rear blind spots. The blind-spot detection and warning systems are an excellent addition and should be mandatory on all vehicles. Adaptable Cruise Control, which is available but not on my vehicle, would be a welcome addition and works with these safety systems. I listed gas mileage in both pros and cons because I’m not currently experiencing the MPG numbers I expected, however, the vehicle is still being broken in. On long range trips, I was able to average 30-MPG and on short range trips, I’m seeing around 26 MPG, but they include mountainous travel. Another item I listed in Pros and Cons is handling. On dry pavement and in warm weather, this vehicle handles excellently. However, if it rains or the temperatures are cool/cold, the rear end gets loose. The tire tread is in great shape, but I’ve talked to other Mustang owners of this generation body style, and they indicate they have the same issue. Some of them said putting larger tires on the rear would help mitigate the problem, however, I was not keen on buying new tires. Further research indicated turning off traction control and placing the vehicle in Rain/Snow Mode could also mitigate the problem. I tried this solution and it worked well enough for me.I listed build quality as a concern because the vehicle does not seem to be put together as well as some of its competitors, such as the Chevrolet Camaro. For example, the lack of gas struts for the hood and the non-finished trunk struts are noticeable. The Camaro has both of these features, but that’s for another discussion. In August 2019, I traded this vehicle for a Camaro SS. This was mostly about completing one of my bucket list items (to own a version of each Pony Car), but it was also to experience that one last V8 driving exhilaration before the gas prices begin to rise and I switch to a hybrid or EV vehicle (there’s nothing like instant torque that you get in these vehicles). While I love these ‘Muscle Cars’, I’m aware of the impact they have on the environment. Sometimes ‘CHANGE’ is good! Overall, I was very pleased with this vehicle and would recommend it with a thumbs-up!

Hey there! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your new car so far. It's still early days, so it's understandable that you can't rate its reliability just yet. The handling sounds really solid, and I love that you feel so connected to the road when you're driving. The manual transmission also sounds like a great feature. I know that coupes can be a bit tricky to get in and out of, but it's all part of the style, right? Overall, I would definitely recommend this vehicle based on your experience so far. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us! By the way, if you don't mind me asking, is there anything in particular that you didn't like about the dealer?

The door panels became unglued and fell off, and the convertible top is leaking from the side curtains on the outside of the rear glass. Unfortunately, there is currently no known repair solution for this issue.

The AC unit failed prematurely at only 26k miles, with a noticeable refrigerant leak inside the car. Despite the dealer's initial reluctance to address the issue, I am confident that they will take responsibility and provide a satisfactory solution.

After purchasing a 2016 Mustang GT, I noticed numerous defects on the paint of the horizontal surfaces. I reported this to the dealer within several days of the purchase, but unfortunately, Ford has taken the position that the paint is not covered by the warranty and has rejected the dealer's repair plan. Despite having purchased approximately 18 new vehicles in the past 20 years, I am disappointed with Ford's lack of customer concern and product support. I would encourage anyone purchasing a new car to consider other OEMs. Update: Although Ford Motor Co. never changed their position on this issue, the selling dealership applied the SurfaceCare product, which provides a 7-year warranty on the paint, at no cost to me to resolve the dispute. Overall, the process demonstrated a low level of customer concern and product support on the part of Ford Motor Co.

The 2016 Ford Mustang experienced an engine failure after only 3 months and 1300 miles, which was promptly addressed by replacing the engine. Despite this, the value of the car has decreased. Additionally, there were two separate instances of coolant leaks, which were unrelated to the engine failure and were a manufacturer issue. Unfortunately, Ford has not provided any assistance with obtaining extra warranty coverage.
