2012 Ford Mustang problems
The Ford Mustang is a series of American automobiles manufactured by Ford. In continuous production since 1964, the Mustang is currently the longest-produced Ford car nameplate. Currently in its seventh generation, it is the fifth-best selling Ford car nameplate. The namesake of the "pony car" automobile segment, the Mustang was developed as a highly styled line of sporty coupes and convertibles derived from existing model lines, initially distinguished by "long hood, short deck" proportions.
Originally predicted to sell 100,000 vehicles yearly, the 1965 Mustang became the most successful vehicle launch since the 1927 Model A. Introduced on April 17, 1964 (16 days after the Plymouth Barracuda), over 400,000 units were sold in its first year; the one-millionth Mustang was sold within two years of its launch. In August 2018, Ford produced the 10-millionth Mustang; matching the first 1965 Mustang, the vehicle was a 2019 Wimbledon White convertible with a V8 engine.
The success of the Mustang launch led to multiple competitors from other American manufacturers, including the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird (1967), AMC Javelin (1968), and Dodge Challenger (1970). It also competed with the Plymouth Barracuda, which was launched around the same time. The Mustang also had an effect on designs of coupes worldwide, leading to the marketing of the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri in the United States (the latter, by Lincoln-Mercury). The Mercury Cougar was launched in 1967 as a unique-bodied higher-trim alternative to the Mustang; during the 1970s, it included more features and was marketed as a personal luxury car.
From 1965 until 2004, the Mustang shared chassis commonality with other Ford model lines, staying rear-wheel-drive throughout its production. From 1965 to 1973, the Mustang was derived from the 1960 Ford Falcon compact. From 1974 until 1978, the Mustang (denoted Mustang II) was a longer-wheelbase version of the Ford Pinto. From 1979 until 2004, the Mustang shared its Fox platform chassis with 14 other Ford vehicles (becoming the final one to use the Fox architecture). Since 2005, Ford has produced two generations of the Mustang, each using a distinct platform unique to the model line.
Through its production, multiple nameplates have been associated with the Ford Mustang series, including GT, Mach 1, Boss 302/429, Cobra (separate from Shelby Cobra), and Bullitt, along with "5.0" fender badging (denoting 4.9 L OHV or 5.0 L DOHC V8 engines).

Common 2012 Ford Mustang problems
The Ford Mustang, a popular sports car, has been known for its reliability and performance. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 2012 Ford Mustang, based on complaints from owners:
- Squeaking Noises: A common problem reported by 2012 Ford Mustang owners is loud squeaking or chirping noises, especially during turns. These noises are often caused by worn outer tie rod ends. This issue typically occurs after 110,000 miles and can be fixed by replacing the tie rod ends, with repair costs ranging from $81 to $132.
- Camshaft Position Sensor: Another issue reported by some 2012 Mustang owners is related to the camshaft position sensor. The magnet for the camshaft position sensor may fall out of its mount, causing damage to the synchronizers. This problem can lead to long crank times when starting the engine and can be identified by an illuminated Check Engine Light. The solution is to replace the magnets and synchronizers, which typically occurs after 102,000 miles.
- Intake Manifold/Valve Cover Gaskets: Some 2012 Mustang owners have reported leaks in the intake manifold or valve cover gaskets, which can result in coolant or oil leaking. This issue typically occurs after 148,000 miles and requires replacing the gasket to fix the leak.
- Body/Paint Problems: The 2012 Ford Mustang has experienced issues with body and paint problems, with the most reported problem being paint blistering. This issue is common in the 2007 model year, but the 2010 model year is considered the worst due to other factors such as higher repair costs or problems at lower mileage.
- Noises and Leaks: Some 2012 Mustang owners have reported noises and leaks, including squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks. These issues can be caused by various factors, such as worn out parts, debris, or improper installation.
It is essential to note that these issues do not affect all 2012 Ford Mustang owners, and the overall reliability of the vehicle is considered average. However, if you own a 2012 Ford Mustang or are considering purchasing one, it is crucial to be aware of these common problems and address them promptly to ensure the longevity and safety of the vehicle.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-14
- VIN: 1ZVBP8CF3C5
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Transmission seems to lose power while driving, the car will barely pull itself but the rpms increase if I accelerate. This has happened several times while driving and occasionally there are dash lights lighting and speedometer/gas gauge doesn’t work but that doesn’t happen every time. When it happens I pull over and shut it down and restart and it runs correctly until it happens again! I do a lot of highway driving and the car just “falling flat” on a multi-lane highway at 70+ mph is definitely a safety issue! I have taken it to my local fastlane shop and the car was driven but didn’t malfunction at that time. He advised me to try to drive it there if it happened again, but I have never been close to the shop at the times it happens or they are closed. There is no advance warning, it happens at various speeds and even on takeoff after stopping for traffic lights. I once was pulling into traffic when it happened and didn’t have enough power to get to my lane before it fell flat! Fortunately I could back up before getting hit by oncoming traffic.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-31
- VIN: 1ZVBP8AM3C5
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: Recently started having erratic shifting issues. Will downshift randomly out of nowhere while driving. Sometimes will just be stuck in 1st gear and won’t go anywhere until I pull over and shut off/start up again. Dangerous because I never know when it will do it. Might seem like everything is fine and then all of a sudden, it downshifts and loses power. Rpm’s rise but car has no power. Have to figure out how to get out of the way. As stated in ford’s “ Customer Satisfaction Program 16N02,” my 2012 has all the symptoms and I have DTC code P0731 but dealer refused to service my vehicle because it doesn’t show up with my VIN, even though it’s a 2012 and I clearly need my Molded Leadframe replaced.

The affected vehicles are equipped with an automatic transmission that may unexpectedly downshift to first gear, regardless of vehicle speed.
- Consequence: An unexpected downshift into first gear can cause the vehicle to slow down suddenly without warning and the rear tires may slide or lock, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the powertrain control module with updated software, free of charge. The recall began on September 19, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16S19.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Park It: 1
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2005-2014 Mustang vehicles manufactured April 6, 2004, to June 21, 2014, and 2005-2006 GT vehicles manufactured February 20, 2004, to September 22, 2006. The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been performed. Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front driver side air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on June 10, 2016. Even if interim repairs were performed under safety recall 14V-802, owners must bring their vehicles in for the final remedy. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S21. Note: This recall supersedes safety recall 14V-802.

- Summary: FORD IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2011-2012 FORD F-150, 2012 EXPEDITION AND LINCOLN NAVIGATOR, AND 2012-2013 MUSTANG VEHICLES, FOR FAILING TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NOS. 102, "TRANSMISSION SHIFT LEVER SEQUENCE, STARTER INTERLOCK, AND TRANSMISSION BRAKING EFFECT" AND 108 LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT. THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE A TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR (TRS) THAT WAS CALIBRATED OUT OF SPECIFICATION FOR REVERSE GEAR.
- Consequence: IF THIS CONDITION EXISTS, THE TRANSMISSION MAY NOT GO INTO REVERSE OR WHEN THE DRIVER PUSHES THE SHIFT LEVER IN THE REVERSE R POSITION AND THE VEHICLES TRANSMISSION DOES GO IN REVERSE, THE R MAY NOT ILLUMINATE ON THE DASHBOARD OF THE F-150, EXPEDITION, OR NAVIGATOR MODELS AND/OR THE BACKUP LAMP ON THE REAR OF THE F-150, EXPEDITION, NAVIGATOR, OR MUSTANG VEHICLES MAY NOT ILLUMINATE. I got my Kona Blue '12 Mustang a month ago. It's a base unit with only two options: the sport appearance package and the backup sensor/security package. I highly recommend getting both. The V6 is smooth and has good power, although it lacks low-end torque. The manual transmission is mediocre. Clutching is effortless and easy to modulate, but 1-2 shifts can be tricky, and I've missed a couple during aggressive acceleration. Sometimes my car grinds and clunks even during lazy 1-2 shifts. The dealer says it's normal, along with a bunch of other clunks and whines this transmission makes. I hope it holds together for a long time, as this is my 10th and definitely best Mustang for sure!

Your car in white was immaculately detailed and had classic lines that made it a head turner throughout the five years you owned it. It was great for straight line runs, had decent handling in the curves, and a wonderful exhaust note. It had good all-around gas mileage around town and even better on the highway. The stock Michelin tires were prone to blowouts at highway speeds (2 in under 23K miles), but they gave good traction in wet conditions. The brakes were wonderful. The car was speed limited at 112 MPH. Although it had some reliability issues, such as throttle body replacement at 20K miles, complete HVAC under-dash replacement at 18K miles, and front lower control arms that went bad at 16K miles, it was still a lovely and fun old school car to drive. The next generation that replaced it performed better but was even less reliable. I hope this helps you make an informed decision about the Mustang.
