1997 Ford Mustang problems

The Ford Mustang is a series of American automobiles manufactured by Ford. In continuous production since 1964, the Mustang is currently the longest-produced Ford car nameplate. Currently in its seventh generation, it is the fifth-best selling Ford car nameplate. The namesake of the "pony car" automobile segment, the Mustang was developed as a highly styled line of sporty coupes and convertibles derived from existing model lines, initially distinguished by "long hood, short deck" proportions.

Originally predicted to sell 100,000 vehicles yearly, the 1965 Mustang became the most successful vehicle launch since the 1927 Model A. Introduced on April 17, 1964 (16 days after the Plymouth Barracuda), over 400,000 units were sold in its first year; the one-millionth Mustang was sold within two years of its launch. In August 2018, Ford produced the 10-millionth Mustang; matching the first 1965 Mustang, the vehicle was a 2019 Wimbledon White convertible with a V8 engine.

The success of the Mustang launch led to multiple competitors from other American manufacturers, including the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird (1967), AMC Javelin (1968), and Dodge Challenger (1970). It also competed with the Plymouth Barracuda, which was launched around the same time. The Mustang also had an effect on designs of coupes worldwide, leading to the marketing of the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri in the United States (the latter, by Lincoln-Mercury). The Mercury Cougar was launched in 1967 as a unique-bodied higher-trim alternative to the Mustang; during the 1970s, it included more features and was marketed as a personal luxury car.

From 1965 until 2004, the Mustang shared chassis commonality with other Ford model lines, staying rear-wheel-drive throughout its production. From 1965 to 1973, the Mustang was derived from the 1960 Ford Falcon compact. From 1974 until 1978, the Mustang (denoted Mustang II) was a longer-wheelbase version of the Ford Pinto. From 1979 until 2004, the Mustang shared its Fox platform chassis with 14 other Ford vehicles (becoming the final one to use the Fox architecture). Since 2005, Ford has produced two generations of the Mustang, each using a distinct platform unique to the model line.

Through its production, multiple nameplates have been associated with the Ford Mustang series, including GT, Mach 1, Boss 302/429, Cobra (separate from Shelby Cobra), and Bullitt, along with "5.0" fender badging (denoting 4.9 L OHV or 5.0 L DOHC V8 engines).

Common 1997 Ford Mustang problems

The 1997 Ford Mustang is a popular sports car known for its performance and style. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems reported by owners.

One of the most common issues with the 1997 Ford Mustang is squeaking noise while turning due to worn outer tie rod ends. This problem can be caused by the wear and tear of the outer tie rod ends, which connect the steering knuckle to the steering rack. As the tie rod ends wear out, they can produce a squeaking noise, especially when turning. This issue can be resolved by replacing the worn-out tie rod ends with new ones.

Another common problem with the 1997 Ford Mustang is interior accessory problems. Some owners have reported troubles with the vehicle's radio/sync display. According to one owner, when the sync is paired with a phone or when the radio is turned on, the display will fail to display any useful information other than the current time and temperature. The radio unit did not receive any radio or music data. Other problems involve the rearview camera, steering assist light, and steering wheel. No recalls have been issued to resolve these issues.

The 1997 Ford Mustang also has a known issue with corrosion on the hood. This problem is related to the paint blistering exhibited by some units of the 2007 and 2010 Ford Mustang. This problem arose because Ford used aluminum hoods but failed to properly insulate them from iron-based connecting and supporting parts used in the prior model year. Despite being a known problem across Ford Mustang models, the automaker has not issued a recall to resolve this problem.

Body paint problems are also one of the most common issues reported by many 1997 Ford Mustang owners. They have observed how paint blisters around their bumpers. Others noted severe peeling and chipping off the front edge of the hood. Although some owners took action and brought their cars to the repair shop, most of them were advised that the issue couldn’t be fixed because the oxidation would keep coming back.

In conclusion, while the 1997 Ford Mustang is a popular and reliable sports car, it is not without its common problems. These issues include squeaking noise while turning due to worn outer tie rod ends, interior accessory problems, corrosion on the hood, and body paint problems. Owners of the 1997 Ford Mustang should be aware of these common issues and take appropriate action to address them.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-08-23
  • VIN: 1FALP45X0VF
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: THE ELECTRICAL POWER WIRES ON THE OEM-INSTALLED FUEL PUMP, LOCATED INSIDE THE VEHICLE'S FUEL TANK, WERE INSTALLED SO THAT THEY CROSSED OVER EACH OTHER ON THEIR WAY FROM THE CONNECTOR OUTSIDE THE TANK TO THE FUEL PUMP INSIDE. ON THREE SIMILAR VEHICLES THAT WE OWN THESE CROSSING SOLID CORE FUEL PUMP WIRES CAME CLOSE ENOUGH TO EACH OTHER SO AS TO TOUCH. ON THIS VEHICLE, HOWEVER, THE WIRES NOT ONLY CROSSED BUT THEY TOUCHED AND THE WIRES WERE RIGID ENOUGH THAT OVER THE YEARS THEY RUBBED AND WORE AWAY THE INSULATION ON BOTH THE RED AND THE BLACK ELECTRICAL WIRES. THIS APPARENTLY ALLOWED THE 12 VOLTS DC POWER TO CROSS FROM ONE WIRE TO THE OTHER, RANDOMLY BYPASSING THE FUEL PUMP AND SERIOUSLY AFFECTING HOW THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE WOULD RUN. WHILE THE OPERATIONAL IMPACT OF THIS PROBLEM WAS A NUISANCE, MORE DISTURBING IS THE POTENTIAL THIS INSTALLATION TECHNIQUE HAS FOR BECOMING A LIFE-THREATENING SITUATION SINCE A SPARK IS THUS POSSIBLE AND SINCE THE WIRES ARE INSIDE A FUEL-VAPOR AREA, INSTEAD OF A LIQUID-FILLED AREA, ANYTIME THE VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN ABOUT HALF A TANK OF GASOLINE. *TR

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-10-31
  • VIN: 1FALP45X1VF
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: AS I WAS MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN ON THE HIGHWAY AT APPROX. 15MPH, I HEARD A LOUD POP/CRACK COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. AT THIS TIME THE CAR STARTED TO DRIFT OFF TO THE RIGHT AND ONTO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I TRIED TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT TO COMPENSATE FOR THE CHANGE AND THE STEERING WHEEL CONTINUED TO TURN IN A 360 DEGREE ROTATION WITH NO CONTROL OF THE TIRES. AT THIS TIME I FELT SOMETHING HIT MY SHOE FROM ABOVE THE GAS PEDAL AND I REALIZED THAT SOMETHING HAD BROKE CAUSING ME TO HAVE ABSOLUTE NO CONTROL OVER THE VEHICLE. AFTER INSPECTING THE STEERING COLUMN, IT WAS EVIDENT THAT THE SHAFT HAD COMPLETELY SEPARATED FROM THE COLUMN THAT GOES INTO THE FLOOR BOARD AND INTO THE FIREWALL TO THE ENGINE. NO BROKEN/SHARD PARTS OF METAL NOR ANY BROKEN PIECES THAT COULD HAVE FALLEN OFF WERE LAYING UNDERNEATH. IT WAS AS IF THE SHAFT WAS "PULLED" OUT OF THE COLUMN HOLE. AFTER FURTHER INSPECTION AT A BODY SHOP, IT WAS NOTED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD NEVER BEEN INTO AN ACCIDENT (JUST LIKE THE CARFAX REPORT HAD INDICATED) BECAUSE THERE ARE NO STRUCTURAL DAMAGES. THE TECHNICIANS HAD NEVER SEEN AN ISSUE SUCH AS THIS AND HAVE NO EXPLANATION AS TO HOW/WHY THE SHAFT WOULD JUST SEPARATE WITH SUCH EASE. I'VE SPOKEN TO SEVERAL MECHANICS AND DEALERSHIPS AND THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN/HEARD OF AN ISSUE SUCH AS THIS. I BOUGHT THE MUSTANG FROM A LOCAL USED CAR DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAVE NOT DISCLOSED ANY INFORMATION REGARDING STEERING ISSUES/IF THERE IS ANY TO DISCLOSE. I AM HAVING THE BODY SHOP COMPLETELY REPLACE THE SHAFT BECAUSE I DO NOT FEEL SAFE OPERATING THE VEHICLE, IF THIS ISSUE IS TO HAPPEN AGAIN WITH SUCH EASE AND I LOOSE TOTAL CONTROL OF STEERING CAPABILITIES, WHO IS TO SAY IT WON'T HAPPEN ON THE FREEWAY WITH CHILDREN IN THE CAR? *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-10-25
  • VIN: 1FALP42X2VF
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I HAVE BEEN HAVING A PROBLEM WITH MY 1997 FORD MUSTANG. THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT HAS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS. AT FIRST, WHEN STARTING MY CAR, THE ENGINE WOULD TURN OVER YET THE CAR WOULD IMMEDIATELY DIE. AFTER A COUPLE OF ATTEMPTS, THE CAR WOULD EVENTUALLY START AND STAY STARTED. NOW, WHEN ATTEMPTING TO START MY CAR, THE ENGINE TURNS OVER YET THE CAR DIES IMMEDIATELY. IN MOST CASES, THE CAR DOES NOT START UNTIL IT HAS BEEN SERVICED. IT HAS BEEN TAKEN TO 3 SERVICE PROVIDERS (INCLUDING FORD), WHO HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO DUPLICATE AND/OR FIX THE PROBLEM. RECENTLY, FORD REPLACED MY AIR FLOW VALVE AND SENSOR AND JUST AFTER PICKING THE CAR UP AND DRIVING IT FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES, I WENT INTO A STORE JUST TO COME OUT AND FIND THAT MY CAR WON'T START. ONCE STARTED THE CAR ALWAYS CONTINUES TO RUN WITH NO PROBLEM. PLEASE PLEASE HELP! *TR

  • VIN: 1FMEU17L5VL
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: INCIDENT LIKE MANY OTHERS I HAVE HAD MY 1997 FORD EXPEDITION XLT BLOW A SPARK PLUG OUT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD. THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING FINE AND TROUBLE FREE WHEN A POP FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND A LOUD BANGING NOISE CAME FROM THE ENGINE HEAD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE REPAIR SHOP ; WHO IN TURN CALLED THE LOCAL FORD DEALER. THE REPLY WAS THEY NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM BEFORE. MY LOCAL SERVICE TECH SAID THE REPAIR KIT ALONE WOULD COST $1,000,00. TO REPAIR IT HE SAID THAT FORD HAD ONLY USED 3 THREADS IN THE HEAD THAT FAILED, BUT ARE NOW REPLACING THEM WITH A 7 THREAD HEAD., THIS TELLS ME THAT THEY ARE VERY AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT ARE WILLING TO LEAVE THEIR CUSTOMERS OUT TO DRY.. I GUESS THE SCARY PART ABOUT THAT IS I STILL HAVE 4 MORE 3 THREAD SPARK PLUG HOLES TO WORRY ABOUT BLOWING OUT,.I ABSOLUTELY FEEL THIS SHOULD BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF FORD MOTOR COMPANY WHO IS LOOKING FOR THE AMERICAN PUBLIC TO BUY IT'S TRUCKS. DAMAGE RESULTING IT WILL COST ME AS LITTLE AS $2,500.00 TO REPAIR THE CURRENT PROBLEM ( AND NO GUARANTY IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN). OR UP TO $5,500.00 TO REPLACE THE BUILT TOUGH 5.4 TRITON ENGINE. *TR

Negative 1997 Ford Mustang car reviews

Hey there! As a fellow college student, I totally understand the struggles of car troubles. I wish I had bought the extended service that the dealer offered, it would have saved me a lot of money in the long run. Let me tell you about my recent experience with my car. The speedometer broke and I took it to two different dealerships, but unfortunately, neither could give me a good answer to fix the problem. They both suggested replacing the cluster, but even after trying two different clusters, the issue still persists. On top of that, my car dies when coming to a stop. If you're a college student, I would recommend considering the insurance costs before choosing a car. I hope this helps you out!

If you plan on driving this car in the snow or rain, it's important to take it slow. Due to the classic light Mustang rear end, traction is reduced and you may experience some fish tailing. However, it's a lot of fun to drive in dry weather. The low end torque is decent, but it's not recommended to try passing anyone in 4th or 5th gear as the acceleration is sluggish. If you're looking for more power, consider getting a GT. The lightweight body of the car means that you may feel some gusty cross winds, but it's not too bad. While the cornering isn't the best, the hydraulic assist steering gives it a sporty feel. Unfortunately, I've had some bad luck with this car and have been stranded 4 times due to clutch, transmission, radiator, and thermostat failures.

This vehicle had some initial issues when we purchased it, such as a malfunctioning A/C, only one car key, and aftermarket tire rims that were difficult to replace. Additionally, the fuel economy was not ideal, with only 40 miles of city driving per $20.00 worth of gas. However, we were able to handle these challenges independently, as the customer service and repair service were not helpful. Despite the lack of trunk and interior space, we were able to make the most of the vehicle's features.

I completely understand where you're coming from! I used to believe that Toyota was the only reliable car brand out there, but after doing some research and experiencing it for myself, I realized that American cars like Mustangs and Camaros/Firebirds are just as great! Your car sounds amazing, especially considering the mileage it has. It's great to hear that it runs well even in extreme weather conditions. And I totally agree with you - it's all about proper maintenance! It's always a good idea to have a used car checked out before making a purchase. Thanks for sharing your experience!

  2. Donato Lockman 2024-10-23

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it back in 2008 and it has been amazing in the snow. Even during blizzards and snow storms, I never got into any accidents. I know some people are worried about rear wheel drive, but as long as you're careful and don't drift too much, you'll be absolutely fine. I barely had to do any maintenance for the first year and a half, except for replacing the power window regulator. Unfortunately, I did have to upgrade to the older 5.0 V8 after I found oil in the coolant reservoir (head gasket), but overall it's been a great car. Take care!

  3. Boyd Roob 2024-10-14

Wow, your car has gone 180,000 miles without needing any major repairs! That's impressive! Although, it seems like you've had a bit of trouble with the AC since 2001. Other than that, it's been rock solid with just regular oil changes and air filter replacements.

  4. Maxwell Kemmer 2024-10-12

I can tell you from personal experience that Mustangs have been a lifelong passion of mine. I've owned both a 97 and 96 GT convertible, and overall, they have been fantastic automobiles. While it's true that they may experience a few issues, such as overheating due to subpar radiators, Mustangs are generally reliable and well-built cars. In fact, most problems that arise with them are due to mistreatment by previous owners.

  5. Braeden O'Connell 2024-08-20

I just bought a Mustang as my first car. It's a great value for your money and a stylish car at that. Plus, it's not too shabby on fuel economy with its large 3.8L engine. I highly recommend it!
