2022 Ford Mustang problems

The Ford Mustang is a series of American automobiles manufactured by Ford. In continuous production since 1964, the Mustang is currently the longest-produced Ford car nameplate. Currently in its seventh generation, it is the fifth-best selling Ford car nameplate. The namesake of the "pony car" automobile segment, the Mustang was developed as a highly styled line of sporty coupes and convertibles derived from existing model lines, initially distinguished by "long hood, short deck" proportions.

Originally predicted to sell 100,000 vehicles yearly, the 1965 Mustang became the most successful vehicle launch since the 1927 Model A. Introduced on April 17, 1964 (16 days after the Plymouth Barracuda), over 400,000 units were sold in its first year; the one-millionth Mustang was sold within two years of its launch. In August 2018, Ford produced the 10-millionth Mustang; matching the first 1965 Mustang, the vehicle was a 2019 Wimbledon White convertible with a V8 engine.

The success of the Mustang launch led to multiple competitors from other American manufacturers, including the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird (1967), AMC Javelin (1968), and Dodge Challenger (1970). It also competed with the Plymouth Barracuda, which was launched around the same time. The Mustang also had an effect on designs of coupes worldwide, leading to the marketing of the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri in the United States (the latter, by Lincoln-Mercury). The Mercury Cougar was launched in 1967 as a unique-bodied higher-trim alternative to the Mustang; during the 1970s, it included more features and was marketed as a personal luxury car.

From 1965 until 2004, the Mustang shared chassis commonality with other Ford model lines, staying rear-wheel-drive throughout its production. From 1965 to 1973, the Mustang was derived from the 1960 Ford Falcon compact. From 1974 until 1978, the Mustang (denoted Mustang II) was a longer-wheelbase version of the Ford Pinto. From 1979 until 2004, the Mustang shared its Fox platform chassis with 14 other Ford vehicles (becoming the final one to use the Fox architecture). Since 2005, Ford has produced two generations of the Mustang, each using a distinct platform unique to the model line.

Through its production, multiple nameplates have been associated with the Ford Mustang series, including GT, Mach 1, Boss 302/429, Cobra (separate from Shelby Cobra), and Bullitt, along with "5.0" fender badging (denoting 4.9 L OHV or 5.0 L DOHC V8 engines).

Common 2022 Ford Mustang problems

The 2022 Ford Mustang is a popular choice for car enthusiasts, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:

  • Limited Rear Seat Space: The 2022 Ford Mustang's rear seats are notoriously cramped, making it less than ideal for passengers. U.S. News has criticized the small back seat, calling it "tiny, even for smaller passengers." This issue is more pronounced when compared to the Dodge Challenger, which offers more spacious rear seating. However, the Mustang does offer a convertible option, which is not available in the Challenger.
  • Smaller Trunk Space: The 2022 Ford Mustang's trunk has around 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space for the coupe, which is less than the 16.2 cubic feet in the Dodge Challenger. This difference is noticeable when transporting larger items. However, the Mustang still offers more storage space than the Chevrolet Camaro, which has a paltry 9.1 cubic feet of volume.
  • Engine Runs Hot / Overheats: The Ford 2.3 Liter Eco-Boost engine in the 2022 Ford Mustang has a history of running hot and overheating. Several recalls have been issued over the years due to improper installation or the need for additional heat shields. Excessive heat can cause failure to brake cables, fuel lines, fuel tanks, and other wiring near the source of the heat. The compressed air exiting the turbocharger is also hot, and the intercooler helps lower these temperatures. If the wrench light or high temperature light is illuminated, it is crucial to bring the vehicle to the dealership immediately for warranty repair work.
  • Carbon Build-Up: The direct-injection engine in the 2022 Ford Mustang can cause oil to run down the sides of the valve, unmixed with the gasoline, leading to oil buildup. Over time, this buildup can cause carbon build-up on the valve, preventing the intake valve from closing properly and damaging piston rings. If the check engine light comes on or fuel mileage is consistently lower than when the vehicle was purchased, it is essential to bring the Mustang to the dealership for warranty repairs.
  • Head Gasket Failure: Excessive engine heat and carbon build-up can cause the head gasket to warp and fail, leading to fluids leaking from the engine compartment or underneath the vehicle. If this issue is not addressed promptly, it can cause the engine to fail.
  • Piston Failure: If the issues above, such as carbon buildup and excessive engine heat, are not addressed early enough, the engine's pistons can become damaged, causing the engine to fail. This repair may be covered under warranty, but supply chain interruptions could cause the vehicle to be in the dealership for over 30 days.
  • Recall: Brake Fluid Level Sensor: The 2022 Ford Mustang has a recall for a potential issue with the brake fluid level sensor. If the sensor does not activate the visual warning indicator when the brake fluid is low, the vehicle may be driven with low brake fluid, reducing braking performance and increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will update the body control module software, free of charge.
  • Recall: Transmission Issue: The 2022 Ford Mustang also has a recall for a potential issue with the transmission. A loose bolt in the transmission could prevent the vehicle from engaging the park gear, increasing the risk of a rollaway. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the transmissions, free of charge.
  • Recall: Front-Facing Camera Misalignment: The 2022 Ford Mustang has a recall for a potential issue with the front-facing camera. If the camera is misaligned, it may not function as intended, restricting or disabling certain features, including Pre-Collision Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping System, Driver Alert, and Auto High Beam Control. Dealers will realign the front-facing camera, free of charge.
  • Recall: Insufficient Weld on Front Passenger Knee Air Bag: The 2022 Ford Mustang has a recall for a potential issue with the front passenger knee air bag. An insufficient weld on the air bag may result in an improper deployment, increasing the risk of injury during a crash. Dealers will replace the front passenger knee air bag, free of charge.

  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY
  • Summary: The Mustang window is supposed to retract approximately 1/2" when the door is opened or shut. My vehicle does this BUT the window will not return to the fully closed position when the door is shut. This is a safety Hazzard as the window tries to fully close but then goes down a 1/2" and returns to fully closed repeatedly while I am driving; this leads to driver distraction on the road, a very hazardous situation. It also leaves the vehicle vulnerable to theft as with the window 1/2" down it is very easy for a thief to stick in a wire and activate the automatic door unlocks.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-09
  • VIN: 1FA6P8CF3N5
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: On December 9, 2023, I was driving my 2022 Ford Mustang on Interstate 70 (westbound) and received the following notifications: "Pre-collision assist not available" and "Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced Power." This resulted in an inability for the car to rev above 4000 RPM which was problematic for driving on an interstate in the mountain. Additionally, driver assists were disabled. The message cleared after the car was turned off for ~ 2 hours, but the pre-collision assist intermittently incorrectly identified objects prompting braking when ACC was activated. However, about a week later, the car suffered a cracked windshield prompting replacement on 12/29/23. Following replacement, the car gave a message saying, "Front Camera Malfunction. Service Required." Despite recalibration attempts at both Safelite AutoGlass and my local Ford dealership, the camera has remained dysfunctional. Similarly, apart from the initial "Front Camera Malfunction" message upon starting the car, there is no indication that Pre-collision, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking are disabled for the duration of the drive. On 2/23/24, I received a call from Safelite stating that the "manufacturer of the windshield had issued a precautionary recall where it looks like the camera bracket can possibly detach and cause some issues with the advanced safety systems." Upon returning their call, it was confirmed that my vehicle, 2022 Ford Mustang, was affected by the precautionary recall. Therefore, I was scheduled to take my car in for a new part and told that I could seek reimbursement from Ford. However, upon further discussion with my Ford dealership and Ford Motor Company Customer Service team, I was told that they were unaware of a recall. Similarly, when further information was requested from Safelite, I was told that "we are not allowed to give out that information." As of this submission, the advanced safety systems remain inoperable.

Negative 2022 Ford Mustang car reviews

  1. Ellis Walsh 2024-10-25

I recently purchased a new manual GT Premium. While I could tolerate the glitchy electronics and the plastic interior, I found the manual transmission to be extremely harsh and vague. According to Ford, this is normal, but I am not alone in my dissatisfaction. Other customers have also expressed their concerns, as seen in this article: https://driving.ca/auto-news/news/shift-for-brains-mustang-owners-sue-ford-over-transmission-issue. Ultimately, I decided to sell the car and switch to a Dodge Scat Pack, which has left me much happier. I don't think I'll be buying a Ford again!

  2. Isaias O'Conner 2024-10-17

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the 2022 Mustang convertible that I rented for a week. Unfortunately, after only 30 minutes of driving, both my wife and I experienced discomfort in our rear ends and had to pull over to stretch our legs. We didn't have this issue during long drives in my 2000 Camry. I hope this feedback is helpful!

  3. Geovany Leffler 2024-09-26

The Mach1 didn't feel as responsive as my wife's 2016 SRT392 Dodge Charger. When I hit the throttle, it seemed a bit hesitant to go.

  4. Jeffrey Welch 2024-06-11

This is really impressive! You've upgraded so many things.

  5. Milan O'Kon 2024-03-10

I have always wanted a mustang until I rented this 2022 convertible. However, I found the ride to be uncomfortable despite the vehicle's attractive appearance.

I recently shopped for some competitive convertibles, including the Jag FType, Audi S5, BMW M4. All of them are really nice cars with a lot of character, but potentially some challenging maintenance issues. However, in my opinion, the Mustang is the best value by far. It has gobs of power, great looks, excellent build quality, and is not overwhelming in the techy world of a BMW or an Audi. While the Jag might have a better-looking interior, it also does not have a trunk, nor does the BMW. One key feature of the Mustang is the design of the roof, and the fact that I can fit 2 sets of golf bags in the trunk with the roof down. Not giant staff bags, but 2 sets of carry stand bags leaving the drivers in the bag! It is perfect.

There isn't much not to like. This car is a fantastic daily driver, even with a manual transmission in the traffic on Long Island. You'll love the sound, the acceleration, and the great sound system. Plus, this car continues to turn heads!

I've been the proud owner of the 2021 Mach 1 Fight Jet Gray model with the performance package for a year and a half now, and it has not disappointed me. I use it as my daily driver, and the handling, along with the 6-speed 'Tremec' manual transmission (i.e. GT350), makes my drive to work very enjoyable. The ride home is even better! The only issue I've had so far is with the Ford 'Sync' system freezing up with the GPS, but the article is correct about the technology. Ford, if you're reading this, I've already stopped by the dealership twice with the same problem. Note that this issue still hasn't been fixed. Overall, what can I say? It's fast! The 'Recaro' seats wrap around you like a glove, and the downforce effects from the GT350/500 keep you sticking to the pavement around the sharpest curves. Yep, that's that liquid metal stuff in the suspension.

I see that you've had both a 2019 and a 2021 Ecoboost coupe, which is great! I'm glad to hear that you found them to be nice, sporty, and affordable. Now, you have a LOADED Ecoboost Premium Convertible, which sounds amazing! The Oxford White exterior with black leather interior is simply gorgeous, and the black mags with black ragtop add a nice touch. It's great to hear that this one handles better in sport mode, and the paddle shifters work great when the engine starts to choke climbing hills. It sounds like you really love this car!

I love everything! Using a manual is definitely the way to go! It's what makes a GT!
