Ford F-150 problems

The Ford F-Series is a series of light-duty trucks marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1948 model year. The F-Series is marketed as a range of full-sized pickup trucks positioned above the midsize Ranger but below the larger Super Duty in the Ford truck lineup. Alongside the F-150 (introduced in 1975), the F-Series also includes the Super Duty series (introduced in 1999), which includes the heavier-duty F-250 through F-450 pickups, F-450/F-550 chassis cabs, and F-600/F-650/F-750 Class 6–8 commercial trucks.

History

The F-Series was first introduced in 1948 as a replacement for a previous pickup model line based on car platforms.

The most popular version of the model line is the F-150 pickup truck, currently in its fourteenth generation (introduced for the 2021 model year). From 1953 to 1983, the entry-level F-Series pickup was the 1⁄2 ton F-100. Starting in 1984, the F-150 became the entry-level. The F-150 has a long-running high-performance off-road trim level introduced for 2010, the (SVT) Raptor currently consisting of three generations. Production of the F-150 SVT Raptor ended in 2014 and it was planned to be succeeded by a new F-150 Raptor, which is based on the thirteenth and fourteenth generation F-150.

The F-Series trucks have been developed into a wide range of design configurations. Alongside medium-duty trucks and "Big Job" conventional trucks (the forerunners of the Ford L-series), the model line has been marketed as a chassis-cab truck and a panel van (a predecessor of the Ford E-Series). The F-Series has served as the platform for various full-sized Ford SUVs, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Excursion. The F-Series has been marketed by its three North American brands: by Mercury as the M-Series (in Canada from 1948 to 1968), and by Lincoln in the 2000s, as the Blackwood and the later Mark LT (2010s for the latter in Mexico only).

Since 1977, the F-Series has remained the best-selling pickup truck line in the United States; it has been the best-selling vehicle overall since 1981. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over fifty years. As of the 2018 model year, the F-Series generated $41 billion (~$49 billion in 2023) in annual revenue for Ford. By January 2022, the F-Series models have sold over 40 million units. Currently, Ford manufactures the F-Series in four facilities in the United States.

Common Ford F-150 problems

The Ford F-150, a popular pickup truck model, has faced various issues over the years, as reported by its owners. These problems range from engine issues to transmission problems and even interior design flaws.

One common issue with the 2015-2017 Ford F-150 models is transmission problems, which lead to rough shifting. The 2015 models, in particular, have experienced transmission issues that cause difficulty when shifting gears. The 2016 models also face engine problems, while the 2017 models have experienced a large recall due to a faulty transmission gear indicator.

The MyFord Touch feature, which was intended to enhance the technological options of the console, has been found unreliable by many owners, leading to a class-action lawsuit. The feature has been reported to disable certain vital vehicle commands, such as the defroster or rear-view camera.

Another significant problem with the 2015-2017 F-Series trucks is a frozen door handle latch issue, which has also been reported in 1997-2000 and 2005-2008 F-150 models. Ford initially blamed the issue on users over-torquing replacement spark plugs, but owners have reported that the original spark plugs ejected from the vehicle.

The 1987-1996 Ford F-150 models also experienced transmission problems, with many owners reporting rough shifting and difficulty changing gears.

In summary, the Ford F-150 has faced various issues over the years, including transmission problems, engine issues, and unreliable technological features. These problems have led to recalls, class-action lawsuits, and dissatisfied owners. However, with proper maintenance, many of these issues can be avoided or addressed in a timely manner.

I have the short bed version of this package. Firstly, the truck does its job well as long as it is not abused. However, there are a few issues that you should be aware of. The clicking noise that is often heard is the cam phaser. It is a $2700.00 dollar repair and it will not stop the clicking noise (as admitted by Ford). The noise may stop for up to two weeks but will continue indefinitely after that. The only way to get it to stop is to purchase what is called the 'Cam Phaser Lockout Kit' which is $700.00. Despite this, I have put 80K miles on the truck and it has clicked since day one. I have not had any major issues with it and the truck runs well. The only other problems I have experienced were with the tensioner and the fuel pump module, which is a recall item. Unfortunately, there is no discount from Ford and it costs $69.00. This is due to bad engineering. Please keep these issues in mind when considering this truck.

Hi there, I recently purchased a new F150 King Ranch truck for work, but I've been having some trouble with the tailgate. Unfortunately, it has randomly opened while driving down the road on about ten occasions, causing me to lose about $1000 worth of tools. I was relieved to hear that there is a recall for this issue, and I took my truck to the dealership for the recommended repairs. However, I'm still a bit concerned about the problem happening again. When I asked for a guarantee that it wouldn't happen again, nobody could say for sure. I've even read online that the issue still persists after the so-called fix. It's frustrating because I rely on my truck for work, and I need to be able to trust that my tools will remain in the bed when I arrive. Despite my concerns, Ford's customer service suggested that I put my tools in the back seat, which I found to be unhelpful. I hope we can find a solution to this issue soon. Thank you for your time.

The shifting problems on my F150 have been terrible since I purchased it, despite having driven 2200 miles. Despite the service manager's insistence that it is normal, I am not satisfied with the performance of the 10-speed transmission and experience trouble every day I drive it.

Here's a brief summary of the truck: it looks great and has a lot of technology, although some of it unfortunately doesn't work. The Lariat is almost fully loaded and has good road holding and steering for a truck. The acceleration and braking are average, but the acceleration is better in Sport mode. The road noise reduction is excellent, and the 3.5L Twin Turbo engine is quiet. The interior has lots of room for movement and storage, and the rear cab is very spacious. However, the logic of controls could be improved. The safety features are impressive, with incredibly bright LED headlights and a blind spot monitoring system that works very well. The truck itself doesn't have terrible blind spots, but the traction is sub-par in bad weather. The tech is about average, with quick-loading voice commands, but some minor issues with the entertainment center. Unfortunately, the reliability of this truck has been poor, with frequent repairs needed and an unreliable engine and transmission. Despite this, the dealership support has been decent. The technicians have mentioned that the transmission 'learns', but in my experience, it seems to be 'learning' the wrong way, which is causing it to get worse. Unfortunately, I have experienced instances where the electronics have shut off while the engine was running, including the power brakes and steering. Despite my concerns, Ford has assured me that there is nothing to worry about. Since purchasing the vehicle, it has spent a total of 53 days in repair for various defects, ranging from minor issues such as the radio cutting out and the AC on the seat getting hot and melting, to more serious problems such as the engine stalling or dying while driving or idling, and all electronics turning off while the truck is on. It has been a frustrating experience, and I have sought legal advice due to Ford's lack of responsibility towards consumers and compliance with state and federal laws. Overall, I would rate my experience with Ford a 1 out of 10, and I will not be purchasing a Ford again. (The 1 is only for the looks of the vehicle.)

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2016 F150 XLT supercrew that I bought in June of 2016. Unfortunately, I've been having some issues with the touch screen since day 1. The dealer tried to fix it by putting in a new screen, but it didn't work and they had to do it again a few weeks later. There were also some problems with the rear door, which we tried to fix with a recall repair, but the problem persisted on the next cold day. Additionally, the backup sensors have malfunctioned and had to be replaced twice. Despite these issues, the truck looks and drives great. However, I must admit that my 2003 Toyota Sequoia with 230000 miles on it was more reliable than this new truck. I hope this feedback helps. Thank you for listening!

For an inexpensive vehicle, this one has performed well. It has gone over 200,000 miles with an inline 6 engine. The air conditioning has never quit and it is easy to maintain. However, the manual transmission does not allow for quick acceleration.

Our F150 is 2WD and has the 4.6 Triton. I have been really pleased with this motor. It has enough power to haul me, my pianos, and my piano trailer once or twice a week. When it pulls a trailer I can count on about 14 mpg. Not loaded about 18 and up to 21 even. I pulled a car trailer and an old car home from Montana and it did great! My only issue is with the plugs. I didn't have one blow but had symptoms and took it in and had plugs, wires, the whole shoot and match for about $900. I didn't want to take the chance of blowing a head. If you don't catch that stuff, it can sound like real trouble.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share a story with you about a truck I recently received. It had been sitting in a field for 8 years before being towed to my house just 2 days before Thanksgiving. The truck had last run in December of 2006 before the owner unfortunately passed away. After some work, I was able to determine that the 4.9L (300 cid) engine would turn over. I gave it a good tune up, replaced the fuel tanks, fuel pumps, sending units, hoses, and belt. With a new battery and set of tires, the truck cranked right up and has been running excellently. After 500 miles, I drained the oil and it looked just as clean as the day I put it in.

I really love the truck! It exceeded my expectations. However, I was disappointed to find out that I had to spend an additional $1000 on aftermarket accessories that I believe should have been included as standard with the truck. Although the dealer can add them on, the cost is excessive. It's like the old days when pickup trucks were sold without rear bumpers and they were an optional add-on. Ford should have included basic versions of these accessories (with an option to replace them with fancier styles) such as a bed liner, running boards/nerf bars/step bars, rear wheel well liners, tailgate shock, and an organizing tray for the center console. I mean, what use is a cavernous 1.4 cubic foot black hole? Other than that, the truck is great!

I've been a Toyota/Honda guy since 1987 because I've always been very happy with their quality and reliability. However, when I started looking at a full-sized pickup, I broadened my search to include Ford for 3 very large reasons. Firstly, they have come a LONG way in the area of quality. Secondly, their Ecoboost engines offer great fuel economy. Lastly, Ford did not take government bailout money. I originally wanted the SuperCrew, but it did not fit in my garage (about 4 inches too long). So, I went with the SuperCab. The major factor that won me over to the Ford over the Toyota Tundra is the gas mileage. Even at today's prices, I could not justify buying a Tundra that will not get better than 15-16 mpg (real world) on the highway. I've now driven my 2015 2WD Ford F150 XLT for about 1500 miles. It may be a bit too early to draw any concrete conclusion, but at this point, I do not think Toyota could have built a truck that is more solid or quiet than the Ford. I've been blown away by how quiet the 2.7L twin-turbo Ecoboost engine is, and the power is more than abundant. Ride quality is pretty much what you'd expect from a truck with an empty bed when going over things like railroad tracks and other bumps in the road. A bit jittery. However, when it comes to highway cruising, I've been very pleased with the smoothness of the ride. I'm also very impressed with the sound deadening that Ford employed in the cab. This thing is quieter than the Toyota Avalon that I traded for it. Overall, at this point, I could scarcely be happier with my choice. This is my first ever full-sized pickup. If things continue as they have, I think I can honestly say that I will be a Ford truck buyer for life. I'm VERY impressed with the strides they have taken to produce a product with the advanced level of quality that I've experienced in this F150. Update - 2/17/2016 - I now have about 14,000 miles on the truck and very little has changed from my earlier comments. The only downside I've noticed is that the EPA's fuel efficiency estimates of 19/26 are overly optimistic. In my experience, I usually get around 17-18mpg in the city and 20-21mpg on the highway. During my last 1100 mile trip to Phoenix, I averaged about 18mpg on the highway. I've spoken to the Ford dealer about this and they suggested that I need to be more mindful of my driving habits. However, I'm a cautious driver and always use cruise control on long trips. After reading other reviews, it seems that many people have had similar issues with gas mileage. Luckily, gas prices are currently low. On a positive note, I've been extremely impressed with the quality of the vehicle. I've driven almost 49,000 miles and have not had a single issue. I haven't had to take it in for any warranty work, which is a testament to its reliability. The only thing that still bothers me is the gas mileage, which is around 17-18mpg in the city and 23mpg on the highway. That's all for now.
