Ford F-150 problems

The Ford F-Series is a series of light-duty trucks marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1948 model year. The F-Series is marketed as a range of full-sized pickup trucks positioned above the midsize Ranger but below the larger Super Duty in the Ford truck lineup. Alongside the F-150 (introduced in 1975), the F-Series also includes the Super Duty series (introduced in 1999), which includes the heavier-duty F-250 through F-450 pickups, F-450/F-550 chassis cabs, and F-600/F-650/F-750 Class 6–8 commercial trucks.
History
The F-Series was first introduced in 1948 as a replacement for a previous pickup model line based on car platforms.
The most popular version of the model line is the F-150 pickup truck, currently in its fourteenth generation (introduced for the 2021 model year). From 1953 to 1983, the entry-level F-Series pickup was the 1⁄2 ton F-100. Starting in 1984, the F-150 became the entry-level. The F-150 has a long-running high-performance off-road trim level introduced for 2010, the (SVT) Raptor currently consisting of three generations. Production of the F-150 SVT Raptor ended in 2014 and it was planned to be succeeded by a new F-150 Raptor, which is based on the thirteenth and fourteenth generation F-150.
The F-Series trucks have been developed into a wide range of design configurations. Alongside medium-duty trucks and "Big Job" conventional trucks (the forerunners of the Ford L-series), the model line has been marketed as a chassis-cab truck and a panel van (a predecessor of the Ford E-Series). The F-Series has served as the platform for various full-sized Ford SUVs, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Excursion. The F-Series has been marketed by its three North American brands: by Mercury as the M-Series (in Canada from 1948 to 1968), and by Lincoln in the 2000s, as the Blackwood and the later Mark LT (2010s for the latter in Mexico only).
Since 1977, the F-Series has remained the best-selling pickup truck line in the United States; it has been the best-selling vehicle overall since 1981. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over fifty years. As of the 2018 model year, the F-Series generated $41 billion (~$49 billion in 2023) in annual revenue for Ford. By January 2022, the F-Series models have sold over 40 million units. Currently, Ford manufactures the F-Series in four facilities in the United States.

Common Ford F-150 problems
The Ford F-150, a popular pickup truck model, has faced various issues over the years, as reported by its owners. These problems range from engine issues to transmission problems and even interior design flaws.
One common issue with the 2015-2017 Ford F-150 models is transmission problems, which lead to rough shifting. The 2015 models, in particular, have experienced transmission issues that cause difficulty when shifting gears. The 2016 models also face engine problems, while the 2017 models have experienced a large recall due to a faulty transmission gear indicator.
The MyFord Touch feature, which was intended to enhance the technological options of the console, has been found unreliable by many owners, leading to a class-action lawsuit. The feature has been reported to disable certain vital vehicle commands, such as the defroster or rear-view camera.
Another significant problem with the 2015-2017 F-Series trucks is a frozen door handle latch issue, which has also been reported in 1997-2000 and 2005-2008 F-150 models. Ford initially blamed the issue on users over-torquing replacement spark plugs, but owners have reported that the original spark plugs ejected from the vehicle.
The 1987-1996 Ford F-150 models also experienced transmission problems, with many owners reporting rough shifting and difficulty changing gears.
In summary, the Ford F-150 has faced various issues over the years, including transmission problems, engine issues, and unreliable technological features. These problems have led to recalls, class-action lawsuits, and dissatisfied owners. However, with proper maintenance, many of these issues can be avoided or addressed in a timely manner.

Great truck! It's amazing that you bought it with 40K miles in 1998 and it still runs well with 143K miles in 2008. The paint still looks great too! Although it may not have the best gas mileage at 13/17, it has never left you stranded on the side of the road. The dual gas tanks are a lifesaver for long trips. While the horsepower may be a little low compared to newer V-8 trucks at 195 vs 300, it's still a reliable and sturdy vehicle.

I've never owned a new vehicle before, but as I'm getting older, I thought, why not? I traded in my 2017 Nissan Titan for a 2023 Ford F-150 XLT SuperCrew Sport RWD V8 in Area 51, and I must say, this truck is beautiful! It has a console shifter, rear AC vents, a 12-inch screen, heated seats, remote start, and navigation. I even added a few modifications, like a 2-inch level kit in the front, an HDX grill guard, wheel well liners in the rear, a spray-in bed liner, and WeatherTech floor liners. I also got the windows tinted and added window visors. This truck came with the start-stop delete, which I'm very happy about. However, I do wish that Ford offered more options for the XLT, like a garage door opener or vanity lights on the fold-down mirror as standard. I also wish I had a 360 camera, tailgate step, adjustable pedals, and Ford Co-Pilot Assist. But overall, the performance is great in any mode, and for highway trips, I put it in eco mode and get up to 25 miles per gallon. I plan on keeping this truck for a very long time and taking good care of it. I have a few more modifications in mind, like installing Katzkin leather seats, a tonneau cover, and a fold-down DVD monitor and player. Maybe I'll even add some under the rear seat subwoofers and long tube headers once the factory warranty runs out. The 18-inch rims are a bit small, but I like the design. Maybe I'll upgrade to 20-inch rims someday. All in all, this truck is awesome!

I leased a 2014 F150 STX supercab in white with sharp rims. I absolutely love the look of it and driving it is a real pleasure. I was considering buying it at the end of the lease due to the low miles I have on it, but unfortunately, I have had some issues with it which concerns me with the reliability. The first issue happened around 7K miles, where I heard an intermittent noise that sounded like marbles in a jar. Apparently, there is an issue with these trucks where the vacuum line or the solenoid fails (moisture related) and it tries to pull the hub in while the truck is moving, basically shredding the gear teeth. It was fixed and ran fine until 2 days ago when I began hearing a grinding hum coming from the front. I was worried that driving it would cause more damage or the truck would stop running. Unfortunately, I had to have the truck with 13K towed. They believe it is a bearing in the front drive train. All I know is that being without a vehicle for 2 days has been frustrating.

The 09 STX shifts with a thump in cruise control above 65 mph. Despite taking it to the dealer twice, the issue persists. The first time, they claimed that it was designed that way and that there was no problem. However, upon returning for a second time, they acknowledged that there had been an upgrade with the transmission and performed the upgrade. Unfortunately, the issue still persists. If anyone has experienced a similar problem, please share your experience and any potential solutions.

I leased a low-spec XL model to tow my 5000 lb. boat and chose one off the lot. I'm so glad the dealer ordered it with the 2.7 Ecoboost over the base engine; it's definitely worth the $995 premium. The acceleration is excellent, as well as the highway power. It's amazing that this engine is exactly half the displacement of a V-8 5.4 liter Expedition I previously leased, yet it produces 25 more horsepower and more torque. I just completed a trip of almost 3000 miles with the boat in tow, and had no problem cruising at 80 mph with ample power for passing. The reduced weight of this aluminum truck is listed at only 4400 lbs on my registration. The seats in this basic model were remarkably comfortable for both myself and my passenger for a long day of driving. I never had to alter my position to avoid discomfort, cramping, or pain. The only seats I've ever experienced that are as comfortable for all day driving are in my S class Mercedes sedan. Rear seat comfort was adequate for adult passengers for short trips. I love the Sync3 system that permits my phone's navigation system to appear on screen, but I wish Apple would allow it to work with Google Maps. I hear that Waze is being added soon, though. Also, the phone keypad won't work when the truck is in motion, which can be frustrating. I've had one problem with the truck that Ford can't seem to solve yet. On cold mornings, the rear camera won't work. As soon as the vehicle warms up, it works, and there is no problem if the temperature is above about 45 degrees.Hi there! I wanted to let you know that my dealer has been unable to fix the issue.

I really like the truck! It has a smooth and quiet ride, and the gas mileage is good for a vehicle this size. Although the 3.5 eco boost engine is not listed on Edmunds, I have had no problems with it and it provides good power. However, I have noticed that the headlights and taillights fog up on the inside, which is a bit of a concern. The dealer claims it is not an issue, but I have seen several other Ford trucks on an adjoining lot, not from my year, that have leaking lights. I may consider going to another dealer or contacting Ford directly. There is a big blind spot on the passenger side where the doors meet and the passenger headrest is located. Additionally, I find the XLT Nav system to be primitive and confusing, so I will probably replace it with a Kenwood Garmin. Overall, I am very satisfied with the truck and look forward to driving it more!

I bought this thing back in 09/18. Unfortunately, right after the 5K oil change, the 5.0 Coyote engine developed a ticking sound, which the dealership called a 'tick'. I called it a knock. They also mentioned that the noise is typical of the 5.0. I've also had it in for transmission problems that they say are typical of the new 10-speed transmission. I'm not convinced. After the 10K oil change, I was going to take a short trip and decided to check the oil. It used 1 quart in 2K miles. I took it in, and they said they would do an oil consumption test, which is a pain if you drive a lot. They determined that my truck used 1.25 quarts within 900 miles. However, Ford has decided to replace the engine, which is great news. I wonder how that's going to affect its future value. They also said they would check the transmission issues after the new engine, just in case that is the root cause. After all of that, my dash is starting to bulge up on the passenger side, which Ford has a service bulletin out on. They are going to replace that at the time that this thing is in for the engine replacement. At this rate, this thing will be a brand new truck again before I even put 15K miles on it. Can you say 'Heartbeat of America'?

Hi there! I recently purchased a Platinum Ford F-150 and overall I'm happy with the quality for the price. However, I've noticed a constant vibration while driving after only 150 miles. After doing some research, it seems like this is a common issue with the drive shaft, tires, or alignment. I'm hopeful that I can get this fixed soon, but I have to admit that what I read on message boards has me a bit worried. If this issue is resolved, I would be absolutely thrilled with my experience driving the truck after just one week!

I recently purchased the F-150 4x4, equipped with a 5.4 liter FLEX FUEL VEHICLE engine. Unfortunately, I have noticed a significant decrease in fuel economy, achieving only about 10 MPG on the highway, which is much lower than the advertised 18 MPG. Even worse, the fuel economy on E85 is much worse. Additionally, I have experienced discomfort due to the non-adjustable seat bottom, which has caused some discomfort after just 200 miles of driving. It would have been great if Ford had included an adjustable seat bottom, even if it was manual. I am concerned that these issues will continue to impact my wallet in the future.

I bought my truck brand new and it has always been a smooth and quiet ride, more like a luxury car. It has good stable handling and lots of room inside and in the bed, making it great for towing and good in the snow. Mechanically, it has been very reliable. However, I have had some issues with rust, which has been a bit of a concern. The steering rack rusted out and got very stiff and erratic to steer, which was a bit of a hassle to replace. The transmission cooling lines also rotted out, which was a more serious issue and cost me about $900 to fix. I was fortunate that it didn't happen during a long trip to Nova Scotia with my elderly father. I've been spending a lot of time sanding, priming and painting the frame and rusty areas of the underside, as well as using the 3M rust fighter undercoating. It's been a bit of a hassle, but I'm hoping it gives me a lot more years with the truck. I looked at the underside of my wife's 2006 Toyota Sienna and noticed that it was undercoated from the factory and hardly had any rust. Maybe Ford ought to consider that if they want to keep their customers coming back. If I get another truck, I'll definitely be looking at Toyota.
