Ford F-150 problems

The Ford F-Series is a series of light-duty trucks marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1948 model year. The F-Series is marketed as a range of full-sized pickup trucks positioned above the midsize Ranger but below the larger Super Duty in the Ford truck lineup. Alongside the F-150 (introduced in 1975), the F-Series also includes the Super Duty series (introduced in 1999), which includes the heavier-duty F-250 through F-450 pickups, F-450/F-550 chassis cabs, and F-600/F-650/F-750 Class 6–8 commercial trucks.

History

The F-Series was first introduced in 1948 as a replacement for a previous pickup model line based on car platforms.

The most popular version of the model line is the F-150 pickup truck, currently in its fourteenth generation (introduced for the 2021 model year). From 1953 to 1983, the entry-level F-Series pickup was the 1⁄2 ton F-100. Starting in 1984, the F-150 became the entry-level. The F-150 has a long-running high-performance off-road trim level introduced for 2010, the (SVT) Raptor currently consisting of three generations. Production of the F-150 SVT Raptor ended in 2014 and it was planned to be succeeded by a new F-150 Raptor, which is based on the thirteenth and fourteenth generation F-150.

The F-Series trucks have been developed into a wide range of design configurations. Alongside medium-duty trucks and "Big Job" conventional trucks (the forerunners of the Ford L-series), the model line has been marketed as a chassis-cab truck and a panel van (a predecessor of the Ford E-Series). The F-Series has served as the platform for various full-sized Ford SUVs, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Excursion. The F-Series has been marketed by its three North American brands: by Mercury as the M-Series (in Canada from 1948 to 1968), and by Lincoln in the 2000s, as the Blackwood and the later Mark LT (2010s for the latter in Mexico only).

Since 1977, the F-Series has remained the best-selling pickup truck line in the United States; it has been the best-selling vehicle overall since 1981. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over fifty years. As of the 2018 model year, the F-Series generated $41 billion (~$49 billion in 2023) in annual revenue for Ford. By January 2022, the F-Series models have sold over 40 million units. Currently, Ford manufactures the F-Series in four facilities in the United States.

Common Ford F-150 problems

The Ford F-150, a popular pickup truck model, has faced various issues over the years, as reported by its owners. These problems range from engine issues to transmission problems and even interior design flaws.

One common issue with the 2015-2017 Ford F-150 models is transmission problems, which lead to rough shifting. The 2015 models, in particular, have experienced transmission issues that cause difficulty when shifting gears. The 2016 models also face engine problems, while the 2017 models have experienced a large recall due to a faulty transmission gear indicator.

The MyFord Touch feature, which was intended to enhance the technological options of the console, has been found unreliable by many owners, leading to a class-action lawsuit. The feature has been reported to disable certain vital vehicle commands, such as the defroster or rear-view camera.

Another significant problem with the 2015-2017 F-Series trucks is a frozen door handle latch issue, which has also been reported in 1997-2000 and 2005-2008 F-150 models. Ford initially blamed the issue on users over-torquing replacement spark plugs, but owners have reported that the original spark plugs ejected from the vehicle.

The 1987-1996 Ford F-150 models also experienced transmission problems, with many owners reporting rough shifting and difficulty changing gears.

In summary, the Ford F-150 has faced various issues over the years, including transmission problems, engine issues, and unreliable technological features. These problems have led to recalls, class-action lawsuits, and dissatisfied owners. However, with proper maintenance, many of these issues can be avoided or addressed in a timely manner.

The Throttle response could be improved, and the 5.4 V8 engine may not be the most powerful option available. However, the body fit is generally good, with the exception of the rubber moldings which are starting to oxidize due to sun exposure. It is worth noting that the body is relatively thin and can dent easily, but this is not uncommon for trucks in this class. Overall, the truck is a solid choice for those who prioritize functionality over luxury.

I bought a 2015 Ford F150 XL Ecoboost 4x4 Sport ten months ago. Unfortunately, within the first two months, while on my way to work in the woods, every light on the panel lit up and the truck went into 'limp mode'. After calling roadside assistance, I was towed to the dealer and given a loaner. However, after days passed without any update, I called the dealer to inquire about my truck. They initially claimed that nothing was wrong since no lights came on, but I knew that wasn't the case. After some back and forth, they finally admitted that my truck had a serious problem and needed a new Throttle Body part. It's frustrating to learn that Ford continues to use defective parts despite previous customer complaints and a 'Customer Satisfaction Program'. Unfortunately, my truck and my friends' vehicles have all experienced Throttle Body failure soon after purchasing new vehicles. To make matters worse, my transmission is now failing in just month 10. It's been a frustrating experience, but I hope that Ford will take responsibility for these issues and make necessary changes.I had a bad experience with my Ford and decided to switch back to my Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4x4, which has never given me any problems. I wouldn't consider buying a Ford again.

I recently took ownership of a Ford F-150 Platinum and drove 600 highway miles between Santa Fe and Ft. Worth area. Although I was disappointed to find that the truck's fuel efficiency was not as advertised, I understand that it is normal for the actual mileage to differ from the estimated mileage. However, I was surprised to find that the truck's fuel efficiency was much lower than expected. I also had some issues with the sunroof and the phasers, which were fortunately covered under warranty. Although I am disappointed with these breakdowns, I am hopeful that the truck will continue to perform well after the warranty expires. I also found it frustrating that updating the navigation software on the Sync 3 system was quite expensive compared to other brands. Overall, I had a mixed experience with this truck and may consider other brands in the future.

My six-month-old truck had 10,800 miles when the engine shut down during rush hour traffic and went into 'limp mode' at 65 mph. The dashboard displayed three warning icons: #1 Service Advancetrac, #2 Wrench Icon 'see manual', #3 Hill start assist not available. Later, the engine light came on. I had the truck towed to the dealer, and my research revealed that there were 100 complaints about engine shutdowns on Ecoboost engines. The engine would idle at 1000 rpm extremely rough, but pressing the gas pedal did nothing. This is a very dangerous situation when driving in heavy traffic, as all you can do is coast to a stop. I turned off the engine and restarted it, which got the engine moving for another mile before it shut down again. It is important to be aware of this issue for your safety and that of your family. I also saw another review with a similar issue, so it may not be isolated. *****UPDATE******* June 2016 Problem was the THROTTLE BODY. The dealer replaced it under warranty.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my truck. I bought it used with 55K miles on it, but unfortunately, it has had some issues with engine shuttering and going into limp mode since I bought it. I've spent over $6000 trying to fix the issue, but it still persists. I've tried everything from buying new parts like Full Race Intercooler, throttle body, cold air intake, turbo power pipes, new coils, new plugs 4 times and new exhaust, to drilling holes into the lower intercooler to let all the water continue to drip out. However, the problem still persists. Yesterday, while hauling a car trailer from Colorado to Texas, the engine shuttered one last time and I had to pull over. To my surprise, I found engine oil coming from under the engine. After towing it home, I found out that it broke a connecting rod and the engine is finished at only 101753 miles on it. I feel that the issue that Ford has had all along with the condensation build up in the intercooler is the cause of this engine failure. It's been a frustrating experience, but I hope this helps others who may be experiencing similar issues.

As I approach retirement, I finally decided to purchase a comfortable pickup truck. The 2018 King Ranch F150 has exceeded my expectations and is by far the most comfortable pickup I have ever driven. I am proud to haul people around in it, and the automatic running boards make it easy for elderly passengers to climb in and out. The massaging front seats, combined with the heated and cooled seats, make driving an absolute pleasure. I have spoken to other pickup owners who agree that Ford now makes the most comfortable vehicles, which is impressive coming from a diehard Chevrolet owner. With the 3.5 eco-boost, there is plenty of power under the hood, and I am happy to report that I have been averaging about 22 mpg. This is a significant improvement from my previous Honda Pilot, which only got about 18 mpg. The spray-in bedliner and bed cover that my dealer included have been great additions, and the assist handle makes it easy to climb up into the bed. I appreciate the monitors that prevent me from getting too close to other vehicles while driving or parking. Additionally, the feature that allows me to unlock the truck by simply touching the door handle is incredibly convenient, especially when my hands are full. I am very proud of my truck and would not trade it for anything at this point!

The 2000 F150 has definitely lived up to my expectations, especially since I've owned several earlier Ford products. I've only needed minimal repairs to date, which is great. While the gas mileage could be better, it's still a comfortable ride for long trips and has some great creature comforts.

UPDATE. Hi there! Just wanted to let you know that I recently traded my 2014 truck for a 2016 Ford F150 XLT. While I enjoyed my previous truck, the lease was running out and it was time for a change. I've had this new truck since 2/1/15 and it's been great, especially in the snow with its 4 wheel drive. With the 5.0 liter engine, I get around 14.5 MPG in the city and an impressive 21 MPG on the highway at 70 MPH. It's also really comfortable and the back seat is huge, which is great when I have passengers. This truck is really versatile and can handle a lot - it easily pulls my boat and trailer, which is probably around 4000 lbs. The 5.5 ft bed is also surprisingly spacious since the sides are high. I do have a couple of minor annoyances though. In the STX model, the rubber cup holder liner often comes out attached to my coffee cup, which can be a bit frustrating. Also, I've had trouble retrieving texts when the Bluetooth is on, even though I consider myself pretty tech-savvy. The manual doesn't explain the sync feature very well. Lastly, around 20,000 miles, I started to experience some vibration when braking, which I assume means the rotors need to be turned. Overall, I still prefer my Ford over my friends' GM trucks, and I don't have much experience with Dodge trucks as I've heard they have more reliability problems than Ford or GM. Thanks for reading!

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We bought this truck brand new in mid-August 2010 for around $35K for our general contracting business. We had high expectations after reading all the reviews on this truck, and we were not disappointed. In our opinion, the F-150 is the only truck that successfully integrates reliability (one of our top requirements), functionality, comfort, fuel efficiency (relative to the size of the engine, in this case, the 292HP, 3V 4.6 V8), and value for the money. While GM trucks are good, they just can't compare to the F-150 in terms of refinement and overall long-term durability. After 7.5 months of ownership and hard work, this truck has proven to be extremely reliable, refined (very quiet and smooth), and is helping our company make money.

I had to replace my exhaust manifold as soon as I bought it due to poor quality factory bolts. I also had to replace the starter twice, as the first replacement was faulty. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing an issue with oil on the spark plug nearest the passenger side firewall, which causes my idiot light to come on and stay on. Despite these issues, I must say that this is still the best truck I have ever owned in every way.
