2014 Ford F-150 problems

The Ford F-Series is a series of light-duty trucks marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1948 model year. The F-Series is marketed as a range of full-sized pickup trucks positioned above the midsize Ranger but below the larger Super Duty in the Ford truck lineup. Alongside the F-150 (introduced in 1975), the F-Series also includes the Super Duty series (introduced in 1999), which includes the heavier-duty F-250 through F-450 pickups, F-450/F-550 chassis cabs, and F-600/F-650/F-750 Class 6–8 commercial trucks.
History
The F-Series was first introduced in 1948 as a replacement for a previous pickup model line based on car platforms.
The most popular version of the model line is the F-150 pickup truck, currently in its fourteenth generation (introduced for the 2021 model year). From 1953 to 1983, the entry-level F-Series pickup was the 1⁄2 ton F-100. Starting in 1984, the F-150 became the entry-level. The F-150 has a long-running high-performance off-road trim level introduced for 2010, the (SVT) Raptor currently consisting of three generations. Production of the F-150 SVT Raptor ended in 2014 and it was planned to be succeeded by a new F-150 Raptor, which is based on the thirteenth and fourteenth generation F-150.
The F-Series trucks have been developed into a wide range of design configurations. Alongside medium-duty trucks and "Big Job" conventional trucks (the forerunners of the Ford L-series), the model line has been marketed as a chassis-cab truck and a panel van (a predecessor of the Ford E-Series). The F-Series has served as the platform for various full-sized Ford SUVs, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Excursion. The F-Series has been marketed by its three North American brands: by Mercury as the M-Series (in Canada from 1948 to 1968), and by Lincoln in the 2000s, as the Blackwood and the later Mark LT (2010s for the latter in Mexico only).
Since 1977, the F-Series has remained the best-selling pickup truck line in the United States; it has been the best-selling vehicle overall since 1981. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over fifty years. As of the 2018 model year, the F-Series generated $41 billion (~$49 billion in 2023) in annual revenue for Ford. By January 2022, the F-Series models have sold over 40 million units. Currently, Ford manufactures the F-Series in four facilities in the United States.

Common 2014 Ford F-150 problems
The 2014 Ford F-150 has been a popular choice among truck buyers due to its reliable 3.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine, premium features, and excellent safety ratings. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems reported by owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Climate Control System Issues: A significant number of 2014 Ford F-150 owners have reported issues with the trucks' in-cabin climate system. The problems cited specifically mention the blower motor only working when turned to high speed, the fan speed changing despite being untouched, and the climate control system simultaneously blowing hot air on one side of the truck and cold on the other.
- Infotainment System Problems: There was a widely known issue with the touchscreen infotainment systems in 2014 Ford F-150 models. It affected music playback, the backup camera, GPS navigation, and Bluetooth pairing, among other problems. The display screen would reportedly sometimes go completely black, freeze up, or not shut down when the truck was turned off. Some owners reported having to open and close the doors or turn the key on and off in the ignition to get the system up and running again.
- Brake Issues: Ford issued a recall in 2016 for over 270,000 2013 and 2014 F-150s due to faulty master brake cylinders that caused fluid loss, resulting in a loss of brake power, particularly at the front wheels. The recall applied primarily to trucks with the base model V6 engine. Additionally, another brake-related recall was issued in late 2014 for brake lights that either did not illuminate whatsoever or did so after a substantial delay caused by an electrical issue.
- Electronic Power Steering Issues: Approximately 5,675 trucks were recalled in June 2014 because of an incorrectly installed motor position sensor magnet. The faulty sensor magnet could cause power loss to the entire electronic power steering system, resulting in erratic or uncontrollable steering.
- Coolant Leaks: A nagging issue with 2009-2013 models is coolant leaks at the heater core. The factory plastic inlet and outlet connectors can become brittle and crack over time, causing a leak. These connectors are located on the firewall and can be repaired using new heater core connectors.
- Exhaust Leaks: Certain 4.6L and 5.4L V8 engine powered F-150 owners may hear a “ticking” sound coming from the engine that changes with engine RPM. This could be a leak at the exhaust manifold caused either by loose/broken exhaust studs or a cracked exhaust manifold.
While these issues may be concerning, it is essential to note that not every 2014 Ford F-150 will experience these problems. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these issues before they become significant concerns.

I bought this truck brand new in November 2014. It was a bit of a spontaneous decision, but my finances were in order and dealerships were running Black Friday ads featuring very aggressive deals. I assume this was because the all-new 2015 aluminum bodies were on their way. I ended up purchasing a $38k truck for a little over $27k, a deal I couldn't pass up. Despite what the title says, it is actually a super cab 4x4. I opted for the 3.7L V6 (the non-ecoboost engine.) It's the base engine, but it doesn't feel underpowered. If you just drove it without knowing which engine it had, you would figure it had a V8. The engine is rated at 302 horsepower which looks impressive on paper. However, the engine creates 278ft/lb of torque. That means that in order for it to generate that much power, the engine must rev very high. (The 302hp rating comes at 6,500 RPM) You really have to press the gas pedal to wake it up. Once you do, it screams with plenty of power. To put this in perspective, a F150 in the 90's with a 5.0 made 275ft/lb of torque. That's just how far technology has advanced that a much smaller engine can do the same work consuming less fuel. My truck in its configuration is rated to tow up to 6,100lbs. If you need more capability than this, or tow frequently, the current 5.0 or 3.5 ecoboost are better choices. They generate 380 and 420 ft/lb of torque, respectively. The tradeoff I made for less capability was more fuel economy. No, I didn't expect to buy a truck for great fuel economy. I bought this truck for the 4x4 in the winter and the bed for weekend projects. No need to consume more fuel for more capability that I would never need. The 3.7 offered the best fuel economy of the group, with 16 city, 18 mixed, and 21 highway. This was a real area of disappointment, here. I measured my fuel economy with both trip meters: Trip A is per gas tank, Trip B is per oil change. I did achieve 20.I recently took a trip from Omaha to KC and my truck got 5mpg, but unfortunately, I struggled to ever get 16mpg on any given regular tank. After driving 5,500 miles into my 10,000 mile oil change interval, I'm averaging 15.6mpg, which is below the EPA estimated 16mpg for city driving. Although I regularly commute in I think that the 2.7L engine is a great choice for consumers like myself. I will be sure to review this truck after 10,000 miles, just like I did for my 2014. So far, the fuel economy is living up to the hype this time around. In my opinion, the 3.7L engine is better suited as a fleet engine for inexpensive trucks that are easy to maintain (i.e. no turbos).

Congratulations on your new F150! It sounds like you're already having a great time with it. The 3.5 Ecoboost engine seems to be a real winner, with impressive power and fuel efficiency. It's great to hear that it handled the mountains with ease, even with a camper in tow. Ford really seems to have hit the mark with this one. Enjoy your new truck and happy travels!

Update: I have been travelling every day in my 2014 F150 XL Regular Cab V-8 with 5.0 engine, 8 foot bed with rear drive (basic work truck) and it has been a great experience. This vehicle has provided me with both dependability and comfort. It has a great average of 13-16 miles per gallon in the city and 19-21 on the highway. With over 100,000 miles on it, it has proven to be a workhorse and has kept me safe. I chose this year and model over the current F150 as it has a steel bed and rides very quietly inside the cab. It has all the features that make my ride enjoyable, including good acceleration and handling at higher speeds. It also has great payload ability to transport items. Even after 9 years, it is still going strong. I have done all the routine maintenance such as oil changes, engine maintenance, tune-ups, brakes, tires, bulbs, and rear end differential fluid changed. The only issues I have had were with the brake rotors, the loss of antifreeze in the reserve tank from an O ring leaking when cold on the radiator T upper hose, the wobbling water pump causing hoses to leak, and the gas tank cover breaking. However, all these issues have been corrected. Overall, I highly recommend this model to anyone who wants reliability, dependability, stability, and comfort in one vehicle.

I can tell you've been a loyal Ford driver for over 50 years! It's great to hear that you think they keep getting better. You're right, they really are the best trucks on the road.

We have been loyal Toyota owners for over 25 years, but when it was time to buy a new truck, I decided to explore other options. I visited a Ford dealership on a whim and test drove a new F150 Supercrew cab. I was thoroughly impressed! I also test drove a new Tundra at a Toyota dealership, but the salesman lacked enthusiasm for ordering the 6.5 foot bed that I wanted. Although the Tundra is a nice truck, I preferred the interior layout of the F150 and its better gas mileage. Gas mileage is important to me, even though prices have been low for over a year. I ultimately chose the F150 and drove out of the dealership a happy camper! The V6 twin turbo engine is powerful and quiet, and the ride is extremely comfortable. I love the rear camera for backing up, especially when pulling trailers. My wife, who owns a Toyota Highlander, is even considering selling it and getting an F150! Although I have had excellent service with Toyota trucks, I am very pleased with my F150 so far. I have driven almost 23,000 miles in 10 months, including towing a loaded flatbed trailer or a single axle trailer for my Harley, and the V6 engine performs great with no engine labor. The backup camera is also terrific! Although Ford advertises the engine at 24 MPG highway, I think all manufacturers have a mysterious way of calculating mileage. My only complaint is that I wish the air conditioner were a bit colder.Vehicle air conditioners used to be much better when they used Freon R-12, but due to concerns about the ozone layer, we now use R-134 which is not as effective. However, the Ford A/C is still a good option. In my experience, the Toyota A/C is superior. Despite any issues, I still love my F150! I have had no real issues with it and now that the engine is broken in, the gas mileage has improved. Occasionally, I have trouble pairing my cell phone with the truck, but that's a minor inconvenience. The long bed version of my Super Crew cab can be a bit more difficult to park, but it was a decision I made based on my needs. My wife may not agree, but I still love my F150! I recently traded in my 2016 F150 for a new 2021 F150, which is basically the same truck but with a 5 1/2 ft bed instead of a 6 1/2 ft bed. Unfortunately, Ford still has a lot to learn about air conditioning as the 2021 model is no better than the 2016 model. Overall, I think my F150 is a great truck.

The gaskets on my 2014 car failed unexpectedly, causing oil leaks, despite my regular maintenance. However, I was fortunate that my insurance covered the cost of repairs up to 75k miles. Although I am disappointed that this happened with such low mileage, I am confident that this issue has been resolved after having the valve cover gaskets, rear main seal gasket, and oil pan gasket replaced. I have decided to move on from Ford, but I understand that this issue can be common in other vehicles as well. Additionally, I noticed some rust on the frame, which is a common issue with American car manufacturers. It would be beneficial for them to address this issue by painting or coating the frame.

I have experienced some issues with my truck and have been working with Ford to resolve them. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, the issues have persisted and my truck has been in the shop for over 40 days. However, I am grateful that I purchased an extended warranty. I am hopeful that we can find a resolution soon.

I had a bad experience with my Ford trucks. My 2010 F150 had a rough ride and my 2014 had a problem with the V-8 Triton engine that caused a terrible noise at start up. Unfortunately, this is a common issue with Fords. I decided to trade it in for a new model with a different engine. However, I experienced the same issue with my new truck. After driving it for a couple of years, the noise has gotten worse. As a result, I have decided to switch to a Toyota Tundra. Thank you for reading my experience with Ford.

I am sorry to hear about the issues you have been experiencing with your 2014 F150 3.5 Ecoboost. It sounds like you have had a frustrating time with the engine light coming on frequently and various other problems. It must be disappointing to have had multiple repair facilities look at it and not find a solution. I understand that the Ford dealer has now recommended an engine replacement which is a significant expense. It is understandable that you are feeling frustrated and disappointed with the situation. Please know that I am here to help and support you in any way I can.

I have owned four King Ranch SuperCrew F150s, and unfortunately, this 2014 model has the worst handling on windy days. Even when driving in the city of Houston, the truck feels like it has no suspension. This is a significant contrast to my 2007 King Ranch, which rode smoothly on windy days in South Texas while pulling a 5x10 trailer. Additionally, the gas mileage on this 2014 model drops significantly when pulling a small trailer, whereas my 2007 model had better gas mileage. I have concerns about the longevity of the 3.5 engine in this truck.
