The Ford F-Series is a series of light-duty trucks marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1948 model year. The F-Series is marketed as a range of full-sized pickup trucks positioned above the midsize Ranger but below the larger Super Duty in the Ford truck lineup. Alongside the F-150 (introduced in 1975), the F-Series also includes the Super Duty series (introduced in 1999), which includes the heavier-duty F-250 through F-450 pickups, F-450/F-550 chassis cabs, and F-600/F-650/F-750 Class 6–8 commercial trucks.

History

The F-Series was first introduced in 1948 as a replacement for a previous pickup model line based on car platforms.

The most popular version of the model line is the F-150 pickup truck, currently in its fourteenth generation (introduced for the 2021 model year). From 1953 to 1983, the entry-level F-Series pickup was the 1⁄2 ton F-100. Starting in 1984, the F-150 became the entry-level. The F-150 has a long-running high-performance off-road trim level introduced for 2010, the (SVT) Raptor currently consisting of three generations. Production of the F-150 SVT Raptor ended in 2014 and it was planned to be succeeded by a new F-150 Raptor, which is based on the thirteenth and fourteenth generation F-150.

The F-Series trucks have been developed into a wide range of design configurations. Alongside medium-duty trucks and "Big Job" conventional trucks (the forerunners of the Ford L-series), the model line has been marketed as a chassis-cab truck and a panel van (a predecessor of the Ford E-Series). The F-Series has served as the platform for various full-sized Ford SUVs, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Excursion. The F-Series has been marketed by its three North American brands: by Mercury as the M-Series (in Canada from 1948 to 1968), and by Lincoln in the 2000s, as the Blackwood and the later Mark LT (2010s for the latter in Mexico only).

Since 1977, the F-Series has remained the best-selling pickup truck line in the United States; it has been the best-selling vehicle overall since 1981. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over fifty years. As of the 2018 model year, the F-Series generated $41 billion (~$49 billion in 2023) in annual revenue for Ford. By January 2022, the F-Series models have sold over 40 million units. Currently, Ford manufactures the F-Series in four facilities in the United States.

Common 2011 Ford F-150 problems

The 2011 Ford F-150 has been subject to several complaints from owners, with some common problems including rear window shattering, electronic power steering assist failure, and issues with the six-speed automatic transmission.

  • Electronic Power Steering Assist Failure: Owners have reported that the F-150's power steering can suddenly fail while driving at speed, causing the steering wheel to periodically stiffen or, in severe cases, lock up. This allegedly compromises vehicle control, but Ford has not addressed this issue specifically for the 2011 F-150. Notably, 2011 was the first year that the F-150 came equipped with electric power steering, which may have been a teething issue for the newly-introduced technology.
  • Six-speed Automatic Transmission Issues: The 2011 F-150 has received 569 NHTSA complaints related to the transmission, with many owners reporting unexpected downshifts and a faulty shift lever. These malfunctions can cause significant damage to the drivetrain and other mechanical components, and may even result in the rear-end locking up, leading to a loss of vehicle control. The NHTSA opened an investigation into the downshifting issue in 2017, finding that a defective Transmission Output Speed Sensor was to blame. Ford issued two recalls to address this problem, affecting a total of 1,416,632 vehicles.

These issues, along with six recalls and four investigations, suggest that the 2011 Ford F-150 has had a significant number of problems, even by best-selling vehicle standards. Potential buyers should be aware of these issues, particularly if considering EcoBoost-equipped models, which are more likely to be affected by recalls and investigations.

Negative 2011 Ford F-150 car reviews

  1. Korbin Swift 2024-11-22

I purchased a loaded $50K F150 after test driving various brands, including Tundra, and I am overall very satisfied with my decision. Although I have experienced some quality issues, such as Ford Sync failing a few times, GPS antenna replacement, A/C system failure, and rear sliding window motor system replacement, all within 40K miles, the dealer has been helpful and Ford has assisted with repair costs. However, I do believe that $600 to repair a rear sliding window is excessive. It is worth noting that my Dodge and Chevy owning friends have also experienced similar issues with their vehicles. Despite this, I have decided to switch to Honda or Toyota, specifically those manufactured in Japan, as they are known for their reliability and affordability. Even Honda and Toyota vehicles manufactured in the USA have had too many recalls. This is simply the truth.

  2. Abdiel Zieme 2024-11-06

I've been a proud owner of my 2011 F150 3.5L for 20K miles, which is just under 18 months. As a long-time Ford buyer (this is my 4th Ford truck), I can confidently say that my experience can be summarized in three categories. Firstly, the 3.5L Engine is truly remarkable. I was initially concerned that I would not have enough power with a 6 cylinder engine, but it proved me wrong. We drove to CO towing a 10K pound trailer, accelerating up the hills and mountains, and never once did the engine hesitate. Secondly, while the truck performs well on the highway, it does tend to guzzle gas in town (including urban freeways), which is a bit of a downside. Lastly, the MyFord Touch/Sync interface can be a bit difficult to use and even dangerous at times. However, I believe that Ford is working on improving it. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and powerful truck.

  3. Santino Grant 2024-09-15

Although the Ecoboost has the potential to provide excellent performance, I have unfortunately experienced some issues with power loss and missing on hard acceleration. Additionally, the gas mileage has been a bit of a disappointment, as I have only been able to achieve 17 mpg on the highway, which is nowhere near the advertised 21 mpg. While the power is certainly there to tow my classic car and enclosed trailer, I tend to avoid towing due to the low 5 to 6 mpg. During my last service at the dealership for the 30k service, I discovered that I was charged for a $200 transmission service that was never actually performed. Despite these issues, I have found the staff at the dealership to be friendly and helpful. However, when I provided an honest rating on the standard customer survey, I received a rather unpleasant text message from the technician. Overall, I believe that the Ecoboost has the potential to be a great vehicle, but it is important to be aware of these potential issues and to carefully monitor any services performed at the dealership.

  4. Jayde Barrows 2024-09-09

I recently purchased a 2011 XLT crewcab with 5.0 and 355 rear. At first, I loved the truck until I put it in 4 wheel drive and noticed a thumping noise. Unfortunately, I had to take it to a Ford service center where I was informed that it needed a new front axle assembly. Although it has been a few days and the truck is still being repaired, I am hopeful that it will be fixed soon. It's difficult to provide a comprehensive review of the vehicle since I was only able to use it for a couple of days before it needed repairs. Additionally, I noticed a tag on the dash that stated, 'selected by Ford for random testing.' I wonder if this has anything to do with the four wheel drive system? Overall, I am still optimistic about my purchase and look forward to enjoying my truck once it's fully functional.

  5. Beau Wisozk 2024-07-13

If you are used to driving a Toyota or Honda, you may find a Ford disappointing. While it may have more gadgets, flashy interior, and updated styling, the maintenance and expensive repairs can be a burden. However, there are some positives to consider, such as the big fuel tank, nice interior, and spacious back seat area. The handling and suspension are mediocre, and the traction control is not as good as some other trucks. The 5.0 engine may struggle with a small trailer or load in the bed. Unfortunately, this particular truck has some major issues at only 86K miles, such as a leaking rear main seal, a steering rack that needs to be replaced, and a clunky driveline. The power steering lines are also starting to leak. Overall, for the money, this truck may not be the best option compared to a Tundra, which has a bulletproof driveline and better warranty and service. It's important to note that the local Ford dealer is kind, but may not be able to do much for these known issues, whereas Toyota has a reputation for taking care of its customers even after the warranty period has ended.Unfortunately, I did not receive the kind of support I was hoping for from Ford. The resale value of my vehicle is quite disappointing, as I am looking at a loss of 6.5K in just half a year due to costly repairs that have already totaled nearly 5K in just 6 months. However, I have decided that it is worth taking the loss to move on from this vehicle since I have lost faith in both the manufacturer and the product. I did give Ford a chance when I bought it, but I am just not cut out for the regular repairs, maintenance, and disappointments that come with it. I am now back to driving a Tundra, and I am very happy with it. I have not once thought of driving it off a cliff or setting it on fire. I did hear from Ford about the issues with the Advance Trac system, and they acknowledged the problem. They asked if I had the truck fixed, but unfortunately, we have not found a solution yet.

Positive 2011 Ford F-150 car reviews

  1. Arno O'Connell 2024-11-19

Nice truck! It's a 2011 model and hasn't needed any repairs yet. The electronics are still in great condition and I really appreciate the backup assist. The bed may be shorter, but overall it's a great vehicle.

  2. Westley Lockman 2024-11-15

I'm so grateful for my current truck and I hope my next one will be just as reliable. In the past, I've had to constantly take my vehicles to the dealership for maintenance, but this one has been a pleasant exception. Although it was tough to part with it, I recently upgraded to a 2016 Lariat and it has exceeded all my expectations. I've had it for a year now and it's been nothing short of perfect. I've put 16000 miles on it and it's been thoroughly tested and proven to be a great machine. I'm a big fan of Ford!

  3. Baron Hermann 2024-10-25

I have owned many trucks, but this Ford is by far the most comfortable to ride and drive. It was a bit pricey, but after 193,000 miles with no major issues, I have to say it's worth every dime!

  4. Christian Hammes 2024-08-09

I bought the 4x4 with Eco Boost and it's been a fantastic truck. I receive many compliments on its royal blue color, chrome (plastic) grill, and overall appearance. Although I've driven it for 40,000 miles, I recently experienced an issue with the air conditioning. Whenever I turn it on, it starts rattling and making a lot of noise. I have to turn it off and on several times before it stops. Another minor issue is that when I wash it and roll down the windows while it's still wet, a lot of water comes inside. I wish it had those lips above the windows to catch and divert the water running off, like in the older models. However, I still love my truck and will likely purchase another one in the future.

  5. Gonzalo Bins 2024-07-11

If you keep up with regular maintenance, your truck will last for a long time!
