1999 Ford F-150 problems
The Ford F-Series is a series of light-duty trucks marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1948 model year. The F-Series is marketed as a range of full-sized pickup trucks positioned above the midsize Ranger but below the larger Super Duty in the Ford truck lineup. Alongside the F-150 (introduced in 1975), the F-Series also includes the Super Duty series (introduced in 1999), which includes the heavier-duty F-250 through F-450 pickups, F-450/F-550 chassis cabs, and F-600/F-650/F-750 Class 6–8 commercial trucks.
History
The F-Series was first introduced in 1948 as a replacement for a previous pickup model line based on car platforms.
The most popular version of the model line is the F-150 pickup truck, currently in its fourteenth generation (introduced for the 2021 model year). From 1953 to 1983, the entry-level F-Series pickup was the 1⁄2 ton F-100. Starting in 1984, the F-150 became the entry-level. The F-150 has a long-running high-performance off-road trim level introduced for 2010, the (SVT) Raptor currently consisting of three generations. Production of the F-150 SVT Raptor ended in 2014 and it was planned to be succeeded by a new F-150 Raptor, which is based on the thirteenth and fourteenth generation F-150.
The F-Series trucks have been developed into a wide range of design configurations. Alongside medium-duty trucks and "Big Job" conventional trucks (the forerunners of the Ford L-series), the model line has been marketed as a chassis-cab truck and a panel van (a predecessor of the Ford E-Series). The F-Series has served as the platform for various full-sized Ford SUVs, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Excursion. The F-Series has been marketed by its three North American brands: by Mercury as the M-Series (in Canada from 1948 to 1968), and by Lincoln in the 2000s, as the Blackwood and the later Mark LT (2010s for the latter in Mexico only).
Since 1977, the F-Series has remained the best-selling pickup truck line in the United States; it has been the best-selling vehicle overall since 1981. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over fifty years. As of the 2018 model year, the F-Series generated $41 billion (~$49 billion in 2023) in annual revenue for Ford. By January 2022, the F-Series models have sold over 40 million units. Currently, Ford manufactures the F-Series in four facilities in the United States.

Common 1999 Ford F-150 problems
The 1999 Ford F-150 has a significant number of reported problems by its owners, with engine issues being the most prevalent. These engine problems account for 35 complaints, with 338 NHTSA complaints.
One of the significant engine issues is the spark plug ejection problem, which is common in the 1997-2003 F-150 models, including the 1999 model. This problem is caused by the truck's design, which makes it difficult to replace spark plugs without over-torquing them. Ford initially blamed the issue on over-torquing, but owners reported that the original spark plugs were ejecting without any modification.
Another engine problem is the hard-starting issue, which affects 1990-1996 F-150 models, including the 1999 model. This problem is caused by faulty harness wiring in the power control module, resulting in symptoms such as vehicular stalling, hesitation, and failure to start. On 1995 and 1996 Ford trucks, hard-starting has also been linked to a stuck idle air control valve.
The 1999 F-150 also has issues with the alternator belt, automatic transmission, ball joints, and suspension. The alternator belt on 1990 to 1994 model F-150s, including the 1999 model, has been the subject of numerous complaints. A telltale sign of trouble is when the engine makes chirping or squealing noises, indicating that the pulley for the air conditioner or the power-steering is askew. The automatic transmission is also a problem, with the TR/MLP sensor being particularly vulnerable to faults, causing the transmission to fall out of alignment and the engine to flare as the truck shifts into fourth gear.
The ball joints on 1990-1996 Ford F-150s, including the 1999 model, have been particularly vulnerable to water exposure, causing them to expire prematurely. Consequently, the ball joints need to be changed out for new ones. The front suspension system on 1991 to 1994 Ford trucks, including the 1999 model, has also been a problem, with weak leaf springs along the front of the vehicle causing issues. To fix the issue, newer, stronger leaf springs are required.
In addition to these problems, the 1999 F-150 has also been subject to 18 recalls, with 1070 complaints submitted to NHTSA for this model year. These recalls apply to the make, model, and year of the car and should be fixed as soon as possible.
In conclusion, the 1999 Ford F-150 has a significant number of reported problems, with engine issues being the most prevalent. The spark plug ejection problem, hard-starting issue, alternator belt, automatic transmission, ball joints, and suspension are some of the common problems that affect this model year. The 1999 F-150 has also been subject to 18 recalls, with 1070 complaints submitted to NHTSA for this model year.

- Summary: MY 1999 F150 TRUCK HAS A HEAD GASKET PROBLEM AND HEATER CORE ISSUE. STARTED SMELLING ANTI FREEZE ON SUNDAY. TOOK TO A MECHANIC ON MONDAY AND SAID THERE IS AN OIL LEAK, SEEPAGE COMING FROM HEAD GASKET. THE HEATER CORE NEEDS REPLACED, BUT WHY OIL LEAK IS HAPPENING NOT SURE. WAS TOLD IT WOULD BE ABOUT $3500.00 TO REPAIR ONLY HEAD GASKET AND HEATER CORE. THIS TRUCK ONLY HAS 127,00 MILES ON IT AND ALL REGULAR MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN DONE TIMELY. RESEARCHED THIS ON INTERNET AND FOUND MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS SAME PROBLEM. THERE WAS EVEN AN ARTICLE IN AUTOMOTIVE NEWS ON 4/1/2002 REGARDING THIS ISSUE, AND ACCORDING TO WRITTEN ARTICLE FORD WAS FIXING THE PROBLEM FOR CONSUMERS. I CALLED FORD AND THEY TOLD ME NO. THIS IS A HUGE EXPENSE, AND WITH THIS MANY COMPLAINTS AND ARTICLE THAT SAYS FORD IS AWARE OF THIS DEFECT AND NO ONE CAN HELP. PRETTY MUCH EITHER FIX THE HEAD GASKETS AND HOPE IT WORKS, OR WAS TOLD NEW ENGINE NEEDED. IF THIS IS AN ISSUE, AND CAN CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STOP WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF I HAVE ANY RECOURSE IN GETTING FORD TO FIX THE PROBLEM. CANNOT BE DRIVEN NOW BECAUSE OF POSSIBLE EXTREME OVERHEATING AND THEN ENGINE FAILURE. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my truck. I bought it brand new back in late 1999 and it has been an amazing vehicle. It currently has 82,000 miles on it and I only had to replace the front brake pads at around 70,000 miles and the driver's electric door lock at around 50,000 miles. The 5.4 engine provides all the power I need and I get a gas mileage of 14-17 mpg. Throughout my life, I have owned 2 new Ford trucks and 4 new Chevy trucks. While I liked both brands, I have to say that Ford has the edge in quality when it comes to these 6 trucks.

This is my first experience with a truck, as I have been shopping for several years. I have rented several brands for short periods of time, mainly Rangers and S10's. I am so glad I went with the F150 (full size), as it is much better to drive than the smaller pick-ups. What a dream to drive, especially on the road. It is truly one great truck!

I'm so glad to hear that you've had a positive experience with your truck! It's great to know that you've been able to put on some extra miles with very few issues. It sounds like you've been able to handle any minor problems that have come up with ease. The 5.4 engine definitely provides some impressive torque, and it's great to hear that the truck handles well on the road. Based on your recommendation, I would definitely consider purchasing a truck like this in the future. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I'm glad to hear that you've had a positive experience with your truck! It sounds like the 5.4 liter engine has great torque and has easily out run many Chevrolets with 5.7 liter engines. While the gas mileage may not be the best, it's great to hear that the truck is still tight with no rattles at 71000 miles. Overall, it sounds like a powerful and reliable truck that I would definitely recommend to anyone in the market for one.

Love the ride. Love the looks. Love the CD/cassette. Love the remarks from others. Love the room.

I've owned this truck for 10 years in the Colorado Rockies and I have some thoughts to share. The engine has been incredibly reliable, which is great! However, the electrical system has been a bit of a headache. The brakes work well, but I've noticed that they wear out yearly. Initially, it struggled on inclines, but I installed a K&N intake system and exhaust system which completely transformed the vehicle's personality and handling. I've never experienced a single oil leak and it has never gotten stuck in the snow. However, I highly recommend adding weight to the rear on icy roads. It's important to avoid driving on slick roads with poor tread on the rear tires and no weight. Currently, it has 175,000 miles and I expect to get another 100,000 miles out of it unless I decide to upgrade just for something new. I'm considering a Honda Ridgeline for my next truck!

This truck has several issues, including faulty brakes, piston slap, rattling interior, sporadic windshield wipers, rusted bottom doors, and engine trouble when exposed to water. Despite being a 1999 model with only 50,000 miles, it is disappointing, especially considering its original price of $31,000. However, it is important to note that these issues may only be present in my specific truck.

This is my favorite Ford out of the 5 I have owned, all 150 and 250 4x4's. However, it is the most expensive truck I have owned. I have had to replace the auto transmission, head gaskets, instrument cluster, and both power door lock units. Unfortunately, after several attempts to correct the left rear wheel locking up when applying a cold brake, I just gave up. On the bright side, it turns heads and is a pleasure to drive when not visiting the local dealer service department! Although, the top of the engine can be a bit noisy on a cold start.

The vehicle has experienced multiple issues with its steering components, control arm, brakes, coils, hood latch, and 4-wheel drive. These issues have been addressed and resolved with the appropriate replacement parts and repairs. Any further issues will be promptly addressed and resolved with the same level of expertise and care.

This vehicle was originally purchased by my father in 1999. After his passing in 2001, I took ownership of it. Over the years, it has proven to be an incredibly reliable and useful all-purpose work truck. Unfortunately, due to its size, it cannot be parked in the garage, and our Homeowners Association (HOA) does not allow it to be parked in the driveway. The truck has some interior issues, a current heating/AC issue, and an intermittent odometer due to a cracked solder joint (which is common for this year, with the 'fix' described on YouTube). However, it would make a fantastic vehicle for a student looking for a low-cost option with minimal insurance coverage, a high driver position, and a heavier vehicle that is safer in the event of an accident. It could also be a great vehicle to 'flip' with some repairs. Candidly, I would love to keep the vehicle, but unfortunately, I cannot.
