The Ford F-Series is a series of light-duty trucks marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1948 model year. The F-Series is marketed as a range of full-sized pickup trucks positioned above the midsize Ranger but below the larger Super Duty in the Ford truck lineup. Alongside the F-150 (introduced in 1975), the F-Series also includes the Super Duty series (introduced in 1999), which includes the heavier-duty F-250 through F-450 pickups, F-450/F-550 chassis cabs, and F-600/F-650/F-750 Class 6–8 commercial trucks.

History

The F-Series was first introduced in 1948 as a replacement for a previous pickup model line based on car platforms.

The most popular version of the model line is the F-150 pickup truck, currently in its fourteenth generation (introduced for the 2021 model year). From 1953 to 1983, the entry-level F-Series pickup was the 1⁄2 ton F-100. Starting in 1984, the F-150 became the entry-level. The F-150 has a long-running high-performance off-road trim level introduced for 2010, the (SVT) Raptor currently consisting of three generations. Production of the F-150 SVT Raptor ended in 2014 and it was planned to be succeeded by a new F-150 Raptor, which is based on the thirteenth and fourteenth generation F-150.

The F-Series trucks have been developed into a wide range of design configurations. Alongside medium-duty trucks and "Big Job" conventional trucks (the forerunners of the Ford L-series), the model line has been marketed as a chassis-cab truck and a panel van (a predecessor of the Ford E-Series). The F-Series has served as the platform for various full-sized Ford SUVs, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Excursion. The F-Series has been marketed by its three North American brands: by Mercury as the M-Series (in Canada from 1948 to 1968), and by Lincoln in the 2000s, as the Blackwood and the later Mark LT (2010s for the latter in Mexico only).

Since 1977, the F-Series has remained the best-selling pickup truck line in the United States; it has been the best-selling vehicle overall since 1981. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over fifty years. As of the 2018 model year, the F-Series generated $41 billion (~$49 billion in 2023) in annual revenue for Ford. By January 2022, the F-Series models have sold over 40 million units. Currently, Ford manufactures the F-Series in four facilities in the United States.

Common 1990 Ford F-150 problems

The 1990 Ford F-150 is a popular vehicle, but like any other vehicle, it has its share of common problems.

One of the most common problems with the 1990 Ford F-150 is starting issues. Drivers have reported complaints of hard-starting on 1990-1996 model F-150s. Ford initially attributed this issue to users over-torquing replacement spark plugs, but owners were mostly complaining about ejections of the original spark plugs that came with the vehicle.

Another common problem with the 1990 Ford F-150 is transmission problems. Ford truck transmission problems were common on F-Series models of the early and mid-1990s. On 1990-1993 models, flare-up issues with the transmission have been reported when drivers shift the truck between the second and third gears. Ford has attributed this issue to distorted valve plates.

The alternator belt is also a common problem for 1990 to 1994 model F-150s. A telltale sign of trouble is when the engine makes chirping or squealing noises. The sounds are an indicator that the pulley for the air conditioner or the power-steering is askew.

Ball joints on 1990-1996 Ford F-150s have been particularly vulnerable to water exposure. If exposed, the ball joints are liable to expire prematurely. Consequently, you will need to change them out for new ones.

Hard starting is also a common problem with the 1990 Ford F-150. Ford attributed this issue to faulty harness wiring in the power control module. Symptoms of the problem include vehicular stalling, hesitation, and failure to start. On 1995 and 1996 Ford trucks, hard-starting has also been linked to a stuck idle air control valve. An engine that cranks and stalls or fails to start altogether indicates this problem.

Suspension problems are also common with the 1991 to 1994 Ford trucks. The problem is due to weak leaf springs along the front of the vehicle. To fix the issue, get newer, stronger leaf springs.

The 5.0L/302 cubic-inch V8 engine in the 1990 Ford F-150 can experience idle issues that can be difficult to diagnose. Some issues won't even trigger a check engine light or code of any sort. Making matters worse, many of the scan tools used to diagnose problems with trucks like this 1990 Ford F-150 don’t even exist anymore, or are at the very least difficult to find. As a result, many owners simply start replacing parts with the hopes that it will eventually solve the problem.

The 8th generation F-150 (1987-1991) ranks 23rd in reliability out of 94 generations. There are 27 complaints mostly about engine problems. Sometimes it helps just to tally up the complaints and see where the biggest stacks are. Use this information to learn about troublespots or to run for the hills.

In conclusion, the 1990 Ford F-150 has its share of common problems, including starting issues, transmission problems, alternator belt issues, ball joint problems, hard starting, and suspension problems. While these problems can be frustrating, they can often be fixed with the right knowledge and tools.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-18
  • VIN: 1FTEF14N0LP
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Unknown component(s) failure causes vehicle to stall at speed that vary, fuel supply is sufficient and battery good, no indication that stall is imminent. Varying time lapses allow restart and normal driving. Ammeter and temp gauges normal. Re-start may occur immediately or several hours. Online search reveal this to be common with F150 1990-1995. I drive Colorado state highways that often have no shoulder to stop on and 60 mph limit is rarely observed by speeding motorists along with following too closely or too fast for conditions which has caused great concern for safety with stalled vehicle in traffic lane. Nighttime hazards with deer, elk and no street or road lighting does not slow traffic in general. Slept in vehicle after incident last Saturday night barely off the road, tried re-starts often twice started then stalled and manually pushed truck back to shoulder that had space. Nearest populated area approx 40 miles.

Negative 1990 Ford F-150 car reviews

  1. Ole Thiel 2024-09-19

Good farm pickup. It has had light use, mostly on oiled roads.

  2. Adam Kris 2024-08-23

I would not consider purchasing another one unless improvements have been made to address the issues of rusting on the body and gas mileage.

  3. Efren Rosenbaum 2024-07-09

It sounds like you've had a good experience with the truck!

  4. Hiram Bednar 2024-02-01

It's great to hear about your truck and how well it has served you over the years! After moving to Georgia from Florida in 1993, I needed to purchase a vehicle and ended up buying a truck with 30,000 miles on it. Since then, I've put 110,000 miles on it and have had to do some maintenance work, such as replacing the power window gears, the alternator earlier this year, and the front brakes three times and the rear brakes once. However, I've never had to do any major mechanical work on the engine or transmission. Before I bought it, the truck was used as a tow vehicle and I've also used it to tow a car hauler. Overall, it's been a reliable and trustworthy truck for almost 10 years now!

Positive 1990 Ford F-150 car reviews

  1. Javonte Fahey 2024-11-21

This truck is perfect for both work and leisure. It effortlessly pulls a 6,000 lb trailer and is just as comfortable on a trip to the grocery store.

  2. Cade Turcotte 2024-11-11

I actually have wrecked this truck and totaled it. A S-10 going 60mph T-boned me, but I was left unharmed. Thank you for producing this truck, Ford!

  3. Oscar Mann 2024-08-18

Overall, it's an excellent truck, but unfortunately, the rear quarter panels are prone to rusting. Perhaps better materials would have made a difference. The only mechanical issues are a sticking starter and a need to replace the idle sensor.

  4. Deangelo Mayert 2024-08-04

This truck has been really fun to drive! The only issue I've had was having to replace a brake line. It does use quite a bit of gas, but it's totally worth it just to be behind the wheel.

  5. Darron Brown 2024-07-25

I drive my Ford to and from work every day, covering a distance of 13 miles. Occasionally, I drive during the day. I have to fill up every four days, which I do when the fuel gauge reaches 1/4. However, I absolutely love the fun of the ride. The acceleration is great and I enjoy it when I drive and people think they can beat that guy in the old Ford. I got the 5.0 and E4OD, which makes it great at the line and good at puddle hopping. There is a three-foot puddle I hit every week and this truck can go down, up, and through the puddle.
