The Ford F-Series is a series of light-duty trucks marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1948 model year. The F-Series is marketed as a range of full-sized pickup trucks positioned above the midsize Ranger but below the larger Super Duty in the Ford truck lineup. Alongside the F-150 (introduced in 1975), the F-Series also includes the Super Duty series (introduced in 1999), which includes the heavier-duty F-250 through F-450 pickups, F-450/F-550 chassis cabs, and F-600/F-650/F-750 Class 6–8 commercial trucks.

History

The F-Series was first introduced in 1948 as a replacement for a previous pickup model line based on car platforms.

The most popular version of the model line is the F-150 pickup truck, currently in its fourteenth generation (introduced for the 2021 model year). From 1953 to 1983, the entry-level F-Series pickup was the 1⁄2 ton F-100. Starting in 1984, the F-150 became the entry-level. The F-150 has a long-running high-performance off-road trim level introduced for 2010, the (SVT) Raptor currently consisting of three generations. Production of the F-150 SVT Raptor ended in 2014 and it was planned to be succeeded by a new F-150 Raptor, which is based on the thirteenth and fourteenth generation F-150.

The F-Series trucks have been developed into a wide range of design configurations. Alongside medium-duty trucks and "Big Job" conventional trucks (the forerunners of the Ford L-series), the model line has been marketed as a chassis-cab truck and a panel van (a predecessor of the Ford E-Series). The F-Series has served as the platform for various full-sized Ford SUVs, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Excursion. The F-Series has been marketed by its three North American brands: by Mercury as the M-Series (in Canada from 1948 to 1968), and by Lincoln in the 2000s, as the Blackwood and the later Mark LT (2010s for the latter in Mexico only).

Since 1977, the F-Series has remained the best-selling pickup truck line in the United States; it has been the best-selling vehicle overall since 1981. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over fifty years. As of the 2018 model year, the F-Series generated $41 billion (~$49 billion in 2023) in annual revenue for Ford. By January 2022, the F-Series models have sold over 40 million units. Currently, Ford manufactures the F-Series in four facilities in the United States.

Negative 2016 Ford F-150 car reviews

  1. Abdullah Prohaska 2025-02-03

As the Flagship product for Ford, I must say that my experience with this truck has been less than satisfactory. Unfortunately, I have had to visit my dealer service center more times in the past three months than I have my barber, my grocer, and my reverend, combined! The truck has presented a number of mechanical and technological issues. Let's start with the least-offensive items first and build from there. On day two, the tire monitor started going off. Seeing it down to 27 psi, I pulled in to the local tire store right off the road (later would find out that Ford would have preferred I drive it to a dealer--apparently they don't mind driving on rims and shredding tires). The teenager at the store told me that the tire simply hadn't been Ford has claimed that they cannot replace any relays or controller modules because the systems are not throwing off codes. However, there are recent issues like this that can be found on Youtube by searching for 'F150 console issues'. It's disappointing to see that Ford is running away from the SYNC platform as fast as it can, but it's nice to see they're tossing their customers into the tailwind too. At this stage, the equivalent of jingling a few wires together to reset things is the only solution. Ford won't authorize any repairs because the Code Fairy has yet to convince Ford corporate that there is a problem. The dealer even took pictures of the malfunctioning dashboard, but Ford disregarded it. In the midst of all of this, the turbo charger relief valve on the Ecoboost charger went out in mid-June. There were no warning lights or anything, just a hissing/pop sound like an old steam vent. Drivers shouldn't go over 50 miles an hour with the relief valve out because it can damage the turbo and the fuel injectors. It's disappointing to see that Ford engineers put all kinds of concerns into the tailpipe emissions, but problems with a major engine component are not being addressed. Although every manufacturer turns out the occasional dud, it's frustrating that Ford has over-engineered a vehicle platform to the point of being unusable. Ford needs to make more of an effort to actually repair the problems instead of just unhooking the battery cables for 10 minutes.Heck, I was disappointed when the service managers told me that they wouldn't tow anything with my FX4 off-road model. They explained that if the console goes out, I would lose the towing control functions and the gauges needed for towing. It's frustrating because that's what the truck was built to do! As a loyal customer who has been leasing Fords for over 20 years, I was hoping for better support. Unfortunately, I had to turn two potential customers away from Ford. However, I'm excited to say that I'll be leasing a Nissan next weekend. I'll be putting my F150 in the garage until my lease is up in 33 months. I hope that Ford can improve their service in the future.

  2. Jett Durgan 2025-02-01

I have a 2016 Ford F150 Limited with 23,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I have had repeated electrical problems with it. The gateway module gets shorted out and causes the running boards, HVAC, power windows, air bag lights, and tire pressure sensors to stop working. I have had to take it to the dealer multiple times, and it has been a frustrating experience. Despite my efforts to resolve the issue, I have not received the support I expected from Ford. I am currently in the process of pursuing the Lemon Law, and I hope to find a resolution soon. Thank you for your understanding.

  3. Warren Little 2025-01-22

I recently purchased my first Ford (F150 Limited) less than 6 months ago (9500 miles) and unfortunately, I encountered an issue with the heated seats. I took it in for service about 3 weeks ago and it's still in the shop with no end in sight. However, the customer service representatives at Ford have been very helpful and empathetic throughout the process. Although there was a defective weld that allowed water to get into the vehicle and destroy all of the electronics, the shop has been working diligently to fix the issue. They even discovered a leak in the rear window and took care of it promptly. While it's frustrating that these things happen, I appreciate the hard work and dedication of the men and women at Ford who build these vehicles. I believe that Ford stands behind their brand and product and will make things right. I'm confident that the issue will be resolved soon and I'll be back on the road in no time!

  4. Bernhard Olson 2025-01-06

I am sorry to hear about the issues you have been experiencing with your F-150. It must be frustrating to have taken it to two dealerships and still not have the issue resolved. I understand that the odor is unpleasant and can be compared to the smell of a wet dog. It is disappointing that the regional service manager, TJ, did not seem to care about your situation. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

  5. Christopher Hagenes 2025-01-06

I recently purchased a 2016 F-150 King Ranch with the 3.5L V6 EcoBoost and was excited to experience the new truck feeling. However, I encountered some issues with the brakes failing due to brake fluid leakage from the master cylinder into the brake booster. This is a very dangerous defect that Ford has known about for four years and has even recalled 2013 and 2014 models for the same issue. Although my truck was repaired under warranty, it is concerning that such a dangerous defect was allowed to persist for so long. In addition to this, I also experienced defects with the interior console, chrome grille, and excessive wind noise. Despite Ford's claim that customer satisfaction is their number one goal, I was disappointed with their lack of customer appreciation. When trying to get warranty service performed, the dealership was forced to go through a prior approval process where someone sitting in Ford's corporate offices looked for every way possible to deny a warranty claim. The dealer had no recourse when a warranty claim was denied except to pay for the repair out of their own pocket. When calling their Customer Relationship Center, I spoke with an unknowledgeable representative who could do nothing to help me except say they were sorry. I hope that Ford can improve their quality and customer service in the future. The dealer initially agreed to cover the damage to my truck's grille and even ordered a replacement. However, when they submitted the claim for prior approval, it was denied by Ford corporate, citing that the damage was caused by a solvent and should have been noted at the time of delivery or submitted within a week to be covered. Unfortunately, the defect is not easily noticeable on cursory inspection due to the chrome surface. While I understand that it was my mistake to assume it would be covered by warranty, I do feel that Ford could have been more considerate given the cost of the truck. As someone who has purchased many new vehicles from different brands, I have never received such poor treatment with regard to warranty service. This is my first Ford and I hope my experience with this truck improves dramatically. If you're in the market for a new truck, I would recommend considering a Sierra or Silverado, which are comparably equipped and cost $3,000 - $5,000 less. I believe you'll be treated more like an appreciated customer.

Positive 2016 Ford F-150 car reviews

  1. Ryann Mraz 2025-02-19

I recently traded in my 2009 King Ranch 5.4 V8 super crew 6.5' bed for a new one. Unfortunately, I had to settle for a 3.5 V6 turbo and a shorter 5.5' bed, which I will miss. I searched for a crew cab with the 6.5' bed, but couldn't find one. It's still too early to give a proper rating, but so far, everything seems to be working well. The sync system has been improved, and there are some useful electronics for safety and ease of driving. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase, but I hope nothing goes wrong. The only downside is the double glass roof, which lets in a lot of heat, even with a flimsy thin cover. I had a window tinter put solar tint on it, which helped a lot.

  2. Terrell Hermiston 2025-02-06

I absolutely love this truck! I had a 2000 Silverado which was a great truck and I drove it for 256,000 miles. The only things that needed replacing were 2 wheel bearings and a fuel pump. I still have a 2009 Silverado with 165,000 miles and it's been a great truck too! I had a Toyota Tacoma before and it was a rust bucket that rode like a radio flyer wagon. So, I decided to go with a new Ford and I'm so glad I did! The body is made of aluminum which is a great idea, Ford! Now I don't have to worry about the salt. This new Ford drives very well, it's quiet and handles great. The 2.7 feels like a big V8. When I test drove the truck, I told the salesman that he must have got the wrong window sticker on this one because when you mash the pedal, it takes off and I mean it takes off!! That sold me on the 2.7. I hope this truck is as reliable as my Chevy trucks. So far, it's a joy to drive and it has so many features. I love the back-up camera and the sliding glass sunroof. With a 36-gallon fuel cell, it has the optional 36-gallon fuel tank. I love it! I probably won't like it so much when I have to fill it up from empty, but gas isn't that bad right now. You will never know you are in a V6 unless you open the hood. Dear Toyota, why can't you make a truck that doesn't rust away? Never again Toyota! One more reason I went with Ford is that it won't rust away like the Toyota. The only way I would ever buy a Toyota again is if they made the whole thing, including the frame, from aluminum! Update: Now I have just over 35,000 miles on my F150 and the only issue I have had is a rattle coming from the sunroof. I took it to the dealer and they fixed it the first time. Great work, guys! I really love this truck. If it continues to be as good as it has been so far, then Ford, you will have a repeat customer. I keep eyeing that new 3.0L Power Stroke diesel in the F150. I just don't like the price tag.Just wanted to let you know that I applied Fluid Film under my entire truck as soon as I got it, and I'm happy to report that there isn't a spot of rust anywhere under the truck! This stuff is really good, and I plan to reapply it in the spring. I live in Indiana where they put salt on the roads just because they need to spend the money, so I'm really impressed with how well Fluid Film works. I wish I could post a picture!

  3. Trenton Bergstrom 2025-02-05

I must admit, I am somewhat biased towards the Ford F-150, as I have owned one ever since I was able to drive. However, it must be stated that the amount of improvement from 1995 to 2016 is unprecedented. I have also owned GM cars and trucks as a secondary vehicle over the years, and I have rented many cars due to my employment. Comparing vehicles in general, you will be very happy with a 2016 F-150. It handles well, rides decently, has a great interior, and is overall a great looking truck. The only downfall when comparing to rivals is the infotainment system, which I personally dislike. However, I can live with it because everything else is second to none when it comes to rivals. The engine choice I went with is the 2.7, as I sometimes need to tow and haul, yet this truck is also my daily driver. I needed an engine that would be practical and the 2.7 is a great middle ground pick. It has great horsepower, mileage, and when I need the power, it is there. It also must be said that the 2.7 is amazingly quiet and smooth. If you have liked the 3.5 Ecoboost from Ford's previous generation, you will love the 2.7 engine. I will say, however, that if you tow serious weight, the 3.5 will still be the way to go. For the rest of us, I cannot say enough great things about the 2.7. Forget the V8, is what I say. However, I have had friends tell me (the ones that cannot bring themselves to get a V-6 in a pickup) that the V8 is a great engine. The aluminum I thought would bother me, but I have to be honest, I do not notice a difference, other than the truck handles better, gets better mileage, and still holds up to heavy-duty applications. All in all, you cannot go wrong with picking the 2016 Ford F-150. It is a great truck!

I am pleased to report that this is only the second new vehicle out of six that I have purchased which did not require any follow-up work or minor repairs in the first few weeks of ownership. The gas mileage is better than expected and the vehicle is both comfortable and quiet. It handles and corners exceptionally well for a full-size pickup, with smooth shifting and minimal vibration. The LED radio/phone/nav display in the center of the dash has had a minor issue a few times, but it is easily reset and does not affect the overall performance of the vehicle. I am thoroughly enjoying my truck and wish I had purchased one years ago instead of my previous SUVs. With a topper and raised platform for camping, it has proven to be a versatile and reliable vehicle. I have achieved impressive gas mileage, with a high of 24.1 mpg on a flat country road and an average of 18 to 19 mpg overall for my normal driving. Even on a 1,500-mile interstate trip at high speeds, I still managed to average 21 mpg. Overall, I am confident in the quality and performance of this vehicle.I am pleased to report that the fuel efficiency exceeded my expectations by more than one mpg.

I recently upgraded my truck from a 2013 F-150 xlt to a brand new 2016 model. Although I didn't necessarily need a new truck, the local dealer was offering such a great deal that I couldn't resist. As someone who has always preferred V8 engines, I was initially hesitant to test drive the new 2.7 Eco boost. However, I was pleasantly surprised by its performance and power. In fact, it even outperforms my old V8 5.0! While I've only driven 200 miles so far, I'm hopeful that the engine will prove to be just as reliable as my old one. Additionally, the truck's appearance has received many compliments from my friends, who are impressed by how plush it is. Passengers have also commented on how comfortable and smooth the ride is, with even Chevy fans admitting that they wish their trucks rode as well. For anyone considering the 2.7 eco boost, I highly recommend taking it for a test drive. Despite the engine not being fully broken in yet, I've already been getting an impressive 24 mpg on my commute through the winding mountain roads of West Virginia.
