1998 Ford F-150 problems
The Ford F-Series is a series of light-duty trucks marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1948 model year. The F-Series is marketed as a range of full-sized pickup trucks positioned above the midsize Ranger but below the larger Super Duty in the Ford truck lineup. Alongside the F-150 (introduced in 1975), the F-Series also includes the Super Duty series (introduced in 1999), which includes the heavier-duty F-250 through F-450 pickups, F-450/F-550 chassis cabs, and F-600/F-650/F-750 Class 6–8 commercial trucks.
History
The F-Series was first introduced in 1948 as a replacement for a previous pickup model line based on car platforms.
The most popular version of the model line is the F-150 pickup truck, currently in its fourteenth generation (introduced for the 2021 model year). From 1953 to 1983, the entry-level F-Series pickup was the 1⁄2 ton F-100. Starting in 1984, the F-150 became the entry-level. The F-150 has a long-running high-performance off-road trim level introduced for 2010, the (SVT) Raptor currently consisting of three generations. Production of the F-150 SVT Raptor ended in 2014 and it was planned to be succeeded by a new F-150 Raptor, which is based on the thirteenth and fourteenth generation F-150.
The F-Series trucks have been developed into a wide range of design configurations. Alongside medium-duty trucks and "Big Job" conventional trucks (the forerunners of the Ford L-series), the model line has been marketed as a chassis-cab truck and a panel van (a predecessor of the Ford E-Series). The F-Series has served as the platform for various full-sized Ford SUVs, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Excursion. The F-Series has been marketed by its three North American brands: by Mercury as the M-Series (in Canada from 1948 to 1968), and by Lincoln in the 2000s, as the Blackwood and the later Mark LT (2010s for the latter in Mexico only).
Since 1977, the F-Series has remained the best-selling pickup truck line in the United States; it has been the best-selling vehicle overall since 1981. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over fifty years. As of the 2018 model year, the F-Series generated $41 billion (~$49 billion in 2023) in annual revenue for Ford. By January 2022, the F-Series models have sold over 40 million units. Currently, Ford manufactures the F-Series in four facilities in the United States.

Common 1998 Ford F-150 problems
The 1998 Ford F-150 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. These issues range from engine problems to electrical and body/paint concerns.
- Engine Problems: The 1998 Ford F-150 has experienced engine-related issues, with 22 NHTSA complaints reported. The most severe problem is the engine seizing, which has an average cost to fix of $4,500 and typically occurs at an average mileage of 75,000 miles.
- Transmission Problems: The 1998 Ford F-150 has also had transmission-related issues, with 13 NHTSA complaints reported. The most common problem is the truck not shifting out of first gear, which has an average cost to fix of $3,800 and typically occurs at an average mileage of 57,000 miles.
- Suspension Problems: Owners of 1991 to 1994 Ford trucks, including the F-150, have reported problems with the front suspension system due to weak leaf springs along the front of the vehicle. To fix the issue, newer, stronger leaf springs should be installed.
- Hard Starting: Drivers have reported complaints of hard-starting on 1990-1996 model F-150s. Ford attributed this issue to faulty harness wiring in the power control module. Symptoms of the problem include vehicular stalling, hesitation, and failure to start. On 1995 and 1996 Ford trucks, hard-starting has also been linked to a stuck idle air control valve.
- Alternator Belt: On 1990 to 1994 model F-150s, the alternator belt has been the subject of numerous complaints. A telltale sign of trouble is when the engine makes chirping or squealing noises, indicating that the pulley for the air conditioner or the power-steering is askew.
- Automatic Transmission: If the TR/MLP sensor is faulty, the transmission is liable to fall out of alignment. Consequently, the engine might flare as you shift the truck into fourth gear. Drivers have reported this problem most commonly in 1994-1995 model F-150s. On 1990-1993 models, flare-up issues with the transmission have also been reported, occurring when drivers shift the truck between the second and third gears. On these vehicles, Ford has attributed the issue to distorted valve plates.
- Ball Joints: On 1990-1996 Ford F-150s, the ball joints have been particularly vulnerable to water exposure. If exposed, the ball joints are liable to expire prematurely. Consequently, you will need to change them out for new ones.
- Fuel System: The fuel system of the 1998 Ford F-150 has had 215 NHTSA complaints, with issues related to the fuel system causing problems for owners.
These common problems with the 1998 Ford F-150 are based on complaints from owners and may not represent all issues experienced by drivers. It is essential to be aware of these potential problems when considering the purchase or ownership of a 1998 Ford F-150.

THEY WERE SOLD AS NEW TIRES AND THE WARRANTY ONLY HAD 3 YEARS ON IT. MANDAN WALMART SAID THEY DO NOT FIX FLATS WITH ROT AND THAT DID NOT SELL THE TIRES, THE THIRD PARTY DID. I BOUGHT NEW TIRES NOT THREE YEAR OLD TIRES AND MANDAN WALMART SHOULD TOLD ME THAT THE TIRES WERE THAT OLD. MANDAN WALMART TOLD ME ALSO "CUSTOMER NEGLECT" ON MY VEHICLE WHAT NONSENSE IS THIS? I bought this truck back in late 2001 with only 61K miles on it. It's now August 2002 and I've only put 5K miles on it, so I don't drive much. But let me tell you, it's the best truck I've ever owned or seen! It has tons of power, especially torque, and the stereo sounds great. There's more room than anyone would ever need, and it's built with awesome styling. The ride is super comfortable too. If you add a flowmaster exhaust system, the sound of the 5.4L Triton really comes to life! While other full-size trucks have their positive points, I'll take my Ford any day. You can't beat it! At Ford, quality is STILL job 1.

I bought my vehicle about 6 months ago. I love my truck, it's fun to drive. Do you know what? I believe everyone should own a Ford!
-
Had this truck for not even two years. I wouldn't give it up for the world. Already moved across the country and had to tote over 7000 lbs worth of households. No problems whatsoever. Even though I have been hit once, which most would consider totalled, she is still running strong. It's a beautiful truck with great power. If you can get past the gas mileage, this is the best truck to look into.
-
Mostly on paved roads, but it ran well in the dirt too. This excellent truck is very reliable.

This truck is from an early series and has a unique blend of features. While it is well-known for its challenging manifolds, it can be a costly repair if not tackled by a skilled mechanic. Despite some reliability issues, rust, and parts changes, the truck boasts a stylish design and an excellent cabin. The seats are particularly comfortable, and the truck handles well, especially with the KYB mono upgrades in the front and coil overs in the rear. Although I have been chasing issues with this truck for 7 years, I still appreciate its unique style and features. While the engine may have some issues, it still has some redeeming qualities.

I've had this truck for 7 years and it's been really reliable, but unfortunately, when it reached 89,000 miles, both head gaskets blew. I did some research and found out that this is a common issue for 97-99 F150's with the 4.2 V6. So, if you're considering buying one, you might want to keep this in mind.

It sounds like you have a great truck! It rides smoothly, even with large tires, and there's no road noise from the tires. Plus, it already has power locks, windows, and remote control mirrors. I understand your concern about the mileage averaging about 18600 per year.
