2017 Ford F-150 problems
The Ford F-Series is a series of light-duty trucks marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1948 model year. The F-Series is marketed as a range of full-sized pickup trucks positioned above the midsize Ranger but below the larger Super Duty in the Ford truck lineup. Alongside the F-150 (introduced in 1975), the F-Series also includes the Super Duty series (introduced in 1999), which includes the heavier-duty F-250 through F-450 pickups, F-450/F-550 chassis cabs, and F-600/F-650/F-750 Class 6–8 commercial trucks.
History
The F-Series was first introduced in 1948 as a replacement for a previous pickup model line based on car platforms.
The most popular version of the model line is the F-150 pickup truck, currently in its fourteenth generation (introduced for the 2021 model year). From 1953 to 1983, the entry-level F-Series pickup was the 1⁄2 ton F-100. Starting in 1984, the F-150 became the entry-level. The F-150 has a long-running high-performance off-road trim level introduced for 2010, the (SVT) Raptor currently consisting of three generations. Production of the F-150 SVT Raptor ended in 2014 and it was planned to be succeeded by a new F-150 Raptor, which is based on the thirteenth and fourteenth generation F-150.
The F-Series trucks have been developed into a wide range of design configurations. Alongside medium-duty trucks and "Big Job" conventional trucks (the forerunners of the Ford L-series), the model line has been marketed as a chassis-cab truck and a panel van (a predecessor of the Ford E-Series). The F-Series has served as the platform for various full-sized Ford SUVs, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Excursion. The F-Series has been marketed by its three North American brands: by Mercury as the M-Series (in Canada from 1948 to 1968), and by Lincoln in the 2000s, as the Blackwood and the later Mark LT (2010s for the latter in Mexico only).
Since 1977, the F-Series has remained the best-selling pickup truck line in the United States; it has been the best-selling vehicle overall since 1981. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over fifty years. As of the 2018 model year, the F-Series generated $41 billion (~$49 billion in 2023) in annual revenue for Ford. By January 2022, the F-Series models have sold over 40 million units. Currently, Ford manufactures the F-Series in four facilities in the United States.

The concern extends to various engines available in the F-150, and the cost to fix this problem remains unknown.
- Exterior Issues: The exterior of the 2017 F-150 has also raised concerns among drivers. Common complaints include problems with latches causing doors not to open, windows shattering, and paint chipping. While these issues are frustrating, they are not as severe as the interior problems.
- Interior Problems: The most common and severe problems with the 2017 F-150 are related to its interior. Apart from brake failure, drivers have reported issues with the electrical system, potentially leading to the doors not opening. These interior problems have raised safety concerns and have been significant complaints among owners.
- Transmission Gear Indicator Recall: A large recall was prompted by a faulty transmission gear indicator in the 2017 Ford F-150. This issue, although not directly related to safety concerns, highlights a mechanical problem that affected a significant number of vehicles.
- Frozen Door Handle Latch: Owners have faced issues with frozen door handle latches, particularly in subzero temperatures. This problem could lead to doors flying open while the vehicle is in motion or getting stuck, posing safety risks. Ford issued a recall to address this issue by adding water shields over the latches.
- 10-Speed Transmission Problems: The 10-speed transmission in newer Ford F-150 trucks has been a source of complaints, including gear slipping, harsh shifting, jerking, acceleration problems, and loss of power. These issues have led to multiple complaints and a class-action lawsuit against Ford Motor Company.
These common problems reported by owners of the 2017 Ford F-150 highlight a range of issues affecting different aspects of the vehicle, from safety concerns like brake failure to mechanical problems with the transmission and exterior components.

We purchased this Super Crew used from an auto rental company with very few miles on it, less than what would be needed for one oil change in fact. Despite being an XLT trim, it feels more like an XL with the fabric, plastic-feeling steering wheel and radio/infotainment package. Either Ford is further lowering the base trims, or this was ordered with some really basic stuff. However, the interior is nicely roomy and this truck has the front bench with fold down center console. Although the console sits too high and creates a slightly awkward driving position if you want to rest your right elbow on it, it is nice to be able to safely fit 6 people in a pinch. We absolutely love the AC, especially how it decreases its massive airflow speed when you answer a phone call. The HVAC controls are good, and we appreciate the use of knobs! The infotainment system is not very intuitive though and pretty rudimentary. We feel like Ford took a step backwards here comparing it to previous gen XLTs. Also, the side view mirrors were a step backwards as well. Despite the lighter aluminum body and 2wd, the naturally aspirated V6 is pretty weak in this truck. We drive it in Sport mode almost always to get a better throttle response. It does get very good fuel economy and has terrific range. In Sport mode, we appreciated the altered shift points when driving in hilly or mountainous areas, and the transmission will hold gear well in descents; this transmission is definitely an upgrade over previous models. The ride feels light, and perhaps too stiffly sprung, but the steering feel is worse than previous models. The heavier steel body on the previous gen may have actually made this truck ride better, or they need to adjust more for this light body and drivetrain weight. The 5.5’ beds are kind of a pain! Almost everything seems to be a few inches too long. Our next pickup will have a 6’ bed. There is very little to go wrong with this vehicle, and it has been utterly reliable. As long as you don't overload it, it still makes for a useful and dependable vehicle, capable of comfortably carrying five passengers and six with a little less space.

Just made a 1200 mile trip and averaged 25 mpg! The ride was so quiet and I absolutely love this truck. Goodbye Chevy, after 45 years.

We test drove a really nice '17 F150 among others before opting to buy a new one. The 2017 we drove had a smooth ride, solid handling, and more horsepower than anyone really needs, which is a delight too. This one had the small dash screen with navigation buttons. It works well, and I like the way they have 10 easily accessible radio presets in that design. I'm partial to the touchscreen, but the 'cheaper' option is pretty intuitive and has its advantages. Overall, if you're looking to spend big bucks on a truck, the F150 is definitely worth considering. It's the standard for pickups, and I can see why.
-
The low end power on this V6 is amazing! With the addition of dual exhausts and better breathing into turbos, this truck would be incredibly fast. It's impressive that this 'little' V6 has more torque and HP than a brand new Ram 2500 with a 6.2 motor. The interior amenities and techy goodies in this truck are not only cool but also functional and promote safety. People who have ridden in the back seats say it's incredibly spacious. Although there are a few items that could make this truck perfect, such as more comfortable front seats and improved navigation commands, the start/stop option on this pickup is one of the best features offered and should be standard on every vehicle, including diesels. This will save billions of gallons of fuel yearly. All things considered, I'm excited to keep this beauty for at least 4 years and can't wait to see what Ford has in store for the future!
-
It's such an awesome vehicle! It's super comfortable and elegant, with lots of practical functions.

I was really excited to get my brand new F150 with the 3.5 twin turbo and ten-speed tranny. However, within a week of taking it home, I noticed significant rust on several drivetrain components and on the rear differential. I went to the dealer and asked how a brand new car could have embedded rust already on it. They said not to worry, that it's normal on all their new trucks. They referenced the rust that you see on brake pads when a vehicle sits for a long period of time, but this comparison is not accurate. The rust everywhere else simply gets much worse over time, while the rust on brake pads disappears the next time you use your brakes. I did not realize until later the document they had me sign regarding future rust issues. A knowledgeable person told me that Ford decided to lower their use of environmentally unfriendly paint, which has dramatically reduced rust protection on the metal frame and other underbody components. Two months in and there are now new spots of rust. It's really disappointing to have to deal with this on a new expensive truck. I hope Ford can address this issue soon. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I recently bought my 2017 F150 in April of 2021 and traded in my previous vehicle for something bigger. Although I love everything about the engine (2.7L EcoBoost), the ride, and the smoothness, I have had one thing that concerned me. Whenever I approach a stop sign or red light, my vehicle tends to “jerk” or “clunk” right before coming to a stop. I can hear and feel it, and it can be more noticeable at times. I have brought it to dealerships and other shops, but unfortunately, no one has been able to replicate the issue, which can be frustrating. I hope it's not the (6 speed) transmission, but it might be the slip yoke. It would be great if Ford could address these small problems with their otherwise excellent trucks.

I recently traded in my 2017 F150 with the Ecoboost and ten-speed automatic transmission. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the plastic oil pan and valve cover, which required repairs. Additionally, there were several recalls for cam phasers and door latch and lock problems. While the truck drove well when it was running, I believe it would have been better suited with a V8 and six-speed transmission.
Benton Kunde 2024-05-18
My 2017 Roush F150 has had multiple issues, including a possible blown engine that even Ford mechanics are struggling to diagnose. Despite not racing it, I have had to replace the rear end, torque converter, and now possibly the engine. However, I have managed to get 68K miles out of my original Mickey Thompson Tires before changing them out, which shows that I have taken good care of the vehicle. Although I did try to sell the truck a couple of months ago, Ford only offered me a trade-in value of 33K on an 80K truck, which is disappointing. Despite these setbacks, I remain confident that Ford will help me fix the issue. I would advise caution when considering purchasing a Roush F150, but I am confident that with proper care and maintenance, it can be a reliable vehicle.
Kale Kirlin 2024-05-17
Despite the high mileage of 50K, the 2017 Raptor's engine remains outrageously powerful and fuel consumption is fair. While the gearbox may be jerky and exhibit hesitation at low speeds and throttle, changing gears overall is not up to par. Consideration could be given to replacing the gearbox with a 6-speed option. On the other hand, the ride of the Raptor is very steady and comfortable, with good soundproofing.
