The Ford F-Series is a series of light-duty trucks marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1948 model year. The F-Series is marketed as a range of full-sized pickup trucks positioned above the midsize Ranger but below the larger Super Duty in the Ford truck lineup. Alongside the F-150 (introduced in 1975), the F-Series also includes the Super Duty series (introduced in 1999), which includes the heavier-duty F-250 through F-450 pickups, F-450/F-550 chassis cabs, and F-600/F-650/F-750 Class 6–8 commercial trucks.

History

The F-Series was first introduced in 1948 as a replacement for a previous pickup model line based on car platforms.

The most popular version of the model line is the F-150 pickup truck, currently in its fourteenth generation (introduced for the 2021 model year). From 1953 to 1983, the entry-level F-Series pickup was the 1⁄2 ton F-100. Starting in 1984, the F-150 became the entry-level. The F-150 has a long-running high-performance off-road trim level introduced for 2010, the (SVT) Raptor currently consisting of three generations. Production of the F-150 SVT Raptor ended in 2014 and it was planned to be succeeded by a new F-150 Raptor, which is based on the thirteenth and fourteenth generation F-150.

The F-Series trucks have been developed into a wide range of design configurations. Alongside medium-duty trucks and "Big Job" conventional trucks (the forerunners of the Ford L-series), the model line has been marketed as a chassis-cab truck and a panel van (a predecessor of the Ford E-Series). The F-Series has served as the platform for various full-sized Ford SUVs, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Excursion. The F-Series has been marketed by its three North American brands: by Mercury as the M-Series (in Canada from 1948 to 1968), and by Lincoln in the 2000s, as the Blackwood and the later Mark LT (2010s for the latter in Mexico only).

Since 1977, the F-Series has remained the best-selling pickup truck line in the United States; it has been the best-selling vehicle overall since 1981. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over fifty years. As of the 2018 model year, the F-Series generated $41 billion (~$49 billion in 2023) in annual revenue for Ford. By January 2022, the F-Series models have sold over 40 million units. Currently, Ford manufactures the F-Series in four facilities in the United States.

Common 1991 Ford F-150 problems

The 1991 Ford F-150 has several common problems that owners have reported, primarily related to the engine, interior accessories, and body/paint.

  1. Engine Problems
  • Won't Stay Running: Another engine-related problem is the truck not staying running, with two complaints for the 1988 F-150 model.
  • Loading Up and Flooding Out: Some owners have reported that the engine acts like it is loading up and flooding out when starting, accompanied by black smoke and backfiring.
  1. Interior Accessories Problems
  • Fuel Pump Switch: A toggle switch on the bottom of the dash to turn the fuel pump on and off has been reported as a problem by a 1991 Ford F-150 owner. This jury-rigged solution is not normal, and everything is supposed to shut down in the off position.
  1. Body/Paint Problems
  • Gas Pumping Out Gas Cap: One complaint mentions gas pumping out the gas cap in the 1989 F-150.
  1. Transmission Problems
  • Flare-Up Issues: Drivers have reported flare-up issues with the transmission, particularly in 1994-1995 model F-150s when shifting into fourth gear, and in 1990-1993 models when shifting between the second and third gears. These issues are attributed to distorted valve plates or a faulty TR/MLP sensor, causing the transmission to fall out of alignment.
  1. Alternator Belt Problems
  • On 1990 to 1994 model F-150s, the alternator belt has been the subject of numerous complaints, with engine making chirping or squealing noises as a telltale sign of trouble. This issue is caused by the pulley for the air conditioner or power-steering being askew.
  1. Ball Joints Problems
  • On 1990-1996 Ford F-150s, the ball joints have been particularly vulnerable to water exposure, leading to premature expiration and the need for replacement.
  1. Hard Starting Problems
  • Drivers have reported complaints of hard-starting on 1990-1996 model F-150s, with Ford attributing this issue to faulty harness wiring in the power control module or a stuck idle air control valve.
  1. Suspension Problems
  • Owners of 1991 to 1994 Ford trucks have reported problems with the front suspension system due to weak leaf springs along the front of the vehicle.

These common problems with the 1991 Ford F-150 can lead to inconvenience, additional maintenance costs, and potential safety risks. Proper maintenance and addressing these issues promptly can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-11-30
  • VIN: 1FTDF15Y9MN
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING, THE DUAL TANKS CROSS-FLOW INTO ONE ANOTHER. ONE TANK HAS OVER-FILLED THE OTHER TANK AND VISA VERSA TO INCLUDE SPILLAGE. I HAVE CONTACTED THE LOCAL DEALER AND FORD ABOUT IT BUT THEY SAY THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING FOR ME AS FAR AS A RECALL IS CONCERNED EVEN THOUGH THIS ISSUE WAS A SAFETY RECALL ISSUE IN THE PAST. I DO NOT KNOW IF THE PREVIOUS OWNER ADDRESSED THE RECALL BUT IT IS A PROBLEM RIGHT NOW. WHEN I PURCHASED THE TRUCK, I DIDN'T KNOW IT HAD A CROSS-FLOW PROBLEM UNTIL SOMEONE TOLD ME SOMETHING WAS LEAKING FROM UNDER MY TRUCK. SINCE THEN, I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE FUEL GAUGE GOES DOWN QUICKER THAN IT SHOULD AND WHEN I SWITCH TANKS, THE OTHER TANK HAS MORE FUEL THAN IT DID. THIS ISSUE HAPPENS REGARDLESS IF IN MOTION OR STANDING STILL. IF THE TRACK WAS FIXED VIA A RECALL, THEY OBVIOUSLY DIDN'T DO IT RIGHT OR THE "FIX" DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM. I CAN NOT AFFORD TO FIX THIS ISSUE EVEN THOUGH IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIXED THROUGH THE RECALL ALREADY.

  • Date Of Incident: 2001-08-24
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1FTEX15N4MK
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: ON AUGUST 24, 2001, A FIRE SPONTANEOUSLY BEGAN UNDER THE HOOD OF MY 1991 FORD F150 PICKUP TRUCK WHILE IT WAS TURNED OFF AND PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY AT NIGHT. THE FIRE CAUSED EXPENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE AND WOULD HAVE PROBABLY CAUGHT MY HOUSE ON FIRE HAD THE TRUCK BEEN PARKED IN THE GARAGE. I CHECKED WITH THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP (CENTROPLEX FORD IN KILLEEN, TEXAS, WHICH IS NOW AUTOMAX FORD) ABOUT FORD'S LIABILITY AND THEY SAID REPAIRS WOULD NOT BE COVERED BECAUSE THE FACTORY WARRANTY HAD LONG EXPIRED. I THEREFORE SOUGHT COMPENSATION THROUGH MY INSURANCE COMPANY. I PAID FOR THE FORD DEALERSHIP TO PERFORM REPAIRS, WHICH WERE NOT DONE SATISFACTORILY. I AM REPORTING THIS NOW BECAUSE THE INCIDENT IS VERY SIMILAR TO RECENT OCCURRENCES THAT HAVE CAUSED DEATHS AND RESULTED IN A MAJOR RECALL. MY VEHICLE IS NOT COVERED UNDER THAT RECALL AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN. THEREFORE, I AM REQUESTING THAT THE RECALL BE EXTENDED TO 1991 FORD F150 PICKUPS AND THAT I RECEIVE SATISFACTORY COMPENSATION AND REPAIRS.*JB

We bought this vehicle new to go with our travel trailer for our trips from AZ to MT. While it doesn't pull as well with a manual transmission as it would have with an automatic one, we still enjoyed using it. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the transmission and ignition switch, which caused some inconvenience. Additionally, we had some minor body issues, such as the bed becoming disconnected from the truck. Despite these challenges, we were able to use the truck for hauling wood and farm work until 2005. We then gave it to my brother, who had to put in another transmission and rebuild the front and rear ends. Although we had to use 4x4 on most days to get up the mountain, we provided the vehicle with good maintenance and repairs as needed. Overall, it served us well for our needs. However, it did not perform well in the snow.

I love my 1991 F150. My wife named him Bubba, quite appropriately. It runs great, was inexpensive, and is in near perfect condition. It does everything my lifestyle commands. If I were to ever lose it, I would feel like I had lost a part of myself.

This truck has been a reliable companion for many miles, but like any vehicle, it has had its share of issues. Some owners have reported problems with the transmission and engine, but with proper maintenance, these can be avoided. The paint may require some upkeep, but it's nothing that can't be fixed with a little elbow grease. Overall, the '91 F150 is a great choice for those in need of a sturdy truck.

It's great to hear about your truck and how well it has served you over the years! After moving to Georgia from Florida in 1993, I needed to purchase a vehicle and ended up buying a truck with 30,000 miles on it. Since then, I've put 110,000 miles on it and have had to do some maintenance work, such as replacing the power window gears, the alternator earlier this year, and the front brakes three times and the rear brakes once. However, I've never had to do any major mechanical work on the engine or transmission. Before I bought it, the truck was used as a tow vehicle and I've also used it to tow a car hauler. Overall, it's been a reliable and trustworthy truck for almost 10 years now!

Hey there! Last year in May, I purchased a 1990 Ford F-150 Pickup. While it may not be the greatest truck out there, it's definitely a lot of fun to drive! The fuel economy hasn't been great, but that's mostly due to poor maintenance and mistreatment on my part. Despite that, the body is in excellent shape for a 13-year-old truck. The only issues I've had with the driveline were self-inflicted. Even though it sucks gas and eats up all my money, I'm still quite pleased with its overall performance and handling.

This truck has been the most reliable vehicle you could ever own. You only need to do basic maintenance, and the body has held up exceptionally well, even considering the snow and salt of Ohio.

I actually have wrecked this truck and totaled it. A S-10 going 60mph T-boned me, but I was left unharmed. Thank you so much for producing such a great truck, Ford!

  3. Vinnie Wintheiser 2024-11-16

If you're someone who enjoys working on vehicles, this truck could be a great project for you. While older trucks require some attention, repairs are relatively inexpensive and easy to do yourself. Unlike newer vehicles, there's no need for complex diagnostic tools. Plus, you won't have to worry about emissions testing if you decide to make upgrades or modifications. In fact, upgrading to new fuel management technology can often result in better efficiency. And let's not forget the antique status, rarity, and classic look that can bring back nostalgic memories. It's a unique vehicle that won't break the bank.

Hey there! I have a 1991 Ford F-150 with the 4.9L straight 6 engine. My uncle gave it to me with 85,000 miles on it, and now it has 187,000 miles. Surprisingly, I haven't changed the oil since I got it, but it still runs really well. I'm not a huge fan of the transmissions on the '91 Ford, though, since my reverse went out.

  5. Jakob Koch 2024-09-16

I bought my truck for only 75 bucks when I was just 16 years old. The guy who owned it before me was taking it to the junkyard, but I saw potential in it. I bought a used alternator for it and she lasted me a good two years. Now that's what I call a great deal! Oh, and did I mention that when she finally gave out, she had over 270,000 miles on her? The guy before me and I both put her through her paces with that 5.0 engine.
