2009 Ford F-150 problems

The Ford F-Series is a series of light-duty trucks marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1948 model year. The F-Series is marketed as a range of full-sized pickup trucks positioned above the midsize Ranger but below the larger Super Duty in the Ford truck lineup. Alongside the F-150 (introduced in 1975), the F-Series also includes the Super Duty series (introduced in 1999), which includes the heavier-duty F-250 through F-450 pickups, F-450/F-550 chassis cabs, and F-600/F-650/F-750 Class 6–8 commercial trucks.
History
The F-Series was first introduced in 1948 as a replacement for a previous pickup model line based on car platforms.
The most popular version of the model line is the F-150 pickup truck, currently in its fourteenth generation (introduced for the 2021 model year). From 1953 to 1983, the entry-level F-Series pickup was the 1⁄2 ton F-100. Starting in 1984, the F-150 became the entry-level. The F-150 has a long-running high-performance off-road trim level introduced for 2010, the (SVT) Raptor currently consisting of three generations. Production of the F-150 SVT Raptor ended in 2014 and it was planned to be succeeded by a new F-150 Raptor, which is based on the thirteenth and fourteenth generation F-150.
The F-Series trucks have been developed into a wide range of design configurations. Alongside medium-duty trucks and "Big Job" conventional trucks (the forerunners of the Ford L-series), the model line has been marketed as a chassis-cab truck and a panel van (a predecessor of the Ford E-Series). The F-Series has served as the platform for various full-sized Ford SUVs, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Excursion. The F-Series has been marketed by its three North American brands: by Mercury as the M-Series (in Canada from 1948 to 1968), and by Lincoln in the 2000s, as the Blackwood and the later Mark LT (2010s for the latter in Mexico only).
Since 1977, the F-Series has remained the best-selling pickup truck line in the United States; it has been the best-selling vehicle overall since 1981. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over fifty years. As of the 2018 model year, the F-Series generated $41 billion (~$49 billion in 2023) in annual revenue for Ford. By January 2022, the F-Series models have sold over 40 million units. Currently, Ford manufactures the F-Series in four facilities in the United States.

I know the previous owner and he took painstakingly good care of the vehicle and it has been driven very little since I purchased it a couple of years back. The fix is to repair the frame at the cost of $3k plus or let it rust away completely. The amount of rust does not add up and I see similar issues with thousands of comments online.

TSB 15-0137 WAS ISSUED IN SEPTEMBER OF 2015 BUT NO RECALL WAS ISSUED. COST TO REPAIR WAS $466 OUT OF MY POCKET. FOR A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH SIX MODEL YEARS THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL. I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC, AND WE LOOKED, BUT DIDN'T IMMEDIATELY SEE ANY PUDDLE, OR SIGN OF RAPID LOSS OF FLUID, FILLED MASTER CYLINDER BACK UP, AND DROVE 15 MILES HOME. ON THE WAY, I NOTICED THE PEDAL WAS SPONGY, WHEN I GOT HOME, I LOOKED, AND HAD LOST 1/4 OF THE FLUID IN THE MASTER CYLINDER.I GOT IN THE TRUCK, PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL, FELT IT GOING DOWN, GOT OUT, AND SAW IT WAS LEAKING RAPIDLY FROM A JUNCTION OF THE BRAKE HOSE GOING FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER TO THE (ABS BOX?) WHERE IT GOES FROM RUBBER TO METAL. I GOT A NEW ONE FROM THE DEALER TODAY DUBLIN FORD, DUBLIN GA. [$33.00] AND NOTICED THAT IS HAS BEEN MUCH IMPROVED OVER THE ORIGINAL. THIS TELLS ME THAT FORD KNEW IT HAD A PROBLEM, WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL ITEM, AND DIDN'T RECALL FOR IT. IT ALSO TELLS ME THAT THERE ARE PROBABLY A BUNCH OF F150'S OUT THERE THAT ARE AT RISK OF BRAKE FAILURE DUE TO THE FAILURE OF A $33 PART. *TR
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-05-29
- VIN: 1FTPW04V19K
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: '09 F150 FX4 W/ 40,900MI. AFTER DRIVING HOME AND GETTING TO MY DRIVEWAY, I HAD TO DRAG MY RIGHT FRONT TIRE INTO THE PARKING SPOT - IT WAS TOTALLY LOCKED AND EXTREMELY HOT/SMOKING. UPON INVESTIGATING, I COULD NOT GET THE BRAKE CALIPER PISTONS TO RETRACT UNLESS I CRACKED THE BLEEDER OPEN. LAST NIGHT I REPLACED EVERYTHING BRAKE RELATED ON THE WHEEL INCLUDING THE RUBBER FLEX LINE. UPON INVESTIGATION, THE CALIPER WAS FINE. WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS/IS THAT THE BRACKET THAT HOLDS THE RUBBER FLEX BRAKE LINE WAS OVER CRIMPED AND PARTIALLY RESTRICTING THE BRAKE FLUID. SECONDLY, CORROSION/RUST HAD BUILT UP BETWEEN THE OUTSIDE OF THE RUBBER BRAKE LINE AND THE INSIDE OF THE BRACKET. AS THE RUST CONTINUED TO BUILD, IT COMPRESSED THE BRAKE LINE UNTIL IT WAS COMPLETELY PINCHED. BY ESTIMATE, I'D SAY THE RIGHT ONE WAS 100% RESTRICTED, AND THE LEFT WAS 90% RESTRICTED. UPON SPEAKING WITH A NEIGHBOR WITH AN '08 F150, HE HAD A VERY SIMILAR OCCURRENCE WHERE THE TIRE WAS ROLLED OFF THE RIM WHEN THE TIRE LOCKED. HE HAD HAVE IT TOWED FOR REPAIRS. MY CONCERN IS THIS IS A FLORIDA TRUCK WITH LIMITED EXPOSURE TO THE MIDWEST. THE RESTRICTED BRAKE LINE OVER TIME HAD TO HAVE SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED MY BRAKING CAPACITY OF THE FRONT WHEELS. OBVIOUSLY, AT THE END, IF I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY AND THE BRAKE HAD LOCKED AT SPEED, SIGNIFICANT CONTROLLABILITY ISSUES WOULD HAVE RESULTED. IN THE PICTURES, YOU CAN SEE THE RUST ON THE VICE THAT CAME OUT WHEN WE PRIED THE BRACKET OPEN AND SLIDE THE LINE OUT. THE OTHER PICTURE HAS WHERE THE PAD BURNED INTO THE ROTOR DUE TO EXCESS HEAT AFTER I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO RETRACT THE CALIPER AND FREE THE ROTOR. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-03-10
- VIN: 1FTPW14V49F
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
- Summary: PROBLEM 1: MY TRUCKS TRACTION CONTROL ENGAGES ON SNOW AND THROWS THE WHEELS INTO A SLIDE RATHER THAN STABILIZES THE VEHICLE. I TURN SWAY AND/OR TRACTION CONTROL OFF AND IT TURNS ITSELF BACK ON WHENEVER I STOP AND THEN GET BACK IN AND RESTART THE TRUCK. PROBLEM 2: THIS TRUCK WILL NOT GIVE AN ACCURATE READ ON GAS IN THE TANK AS THE NEEDLE IS ALWAYS GETTING STUCK. I GAUGE BY MILES GONE AS TO WHEN I NEED GAS. (JUST STOPPED TO GET GAS THOUGHT I WAS OUT BUT NEEDLE WENT OVER 1/2 WHICH IS WHAT I PUT IN.) BUT THERE ARE MORE ELECTRICAL ISSUES SUCH AS THE DOORS THAT UNLOCK DURING THE NIGHT WHEN I HAVE LOCKED ALL DOORS, BY MORNING ONE OR MORE DOORS OFTEN ON PASSENGER SIDE UNLOCK THEMSELVES. AND SYNC ALWAYS DOES IT'S OWN THING WITH MY IPHONE X, NEVER KNOW IF IT WILL CONNECT OR BE DISCONNECTED WHILE DRIVING. SOMETIMES IT GOES FROM HANDS FREE ANSWER IN THE MIDDLE OF A CONVERSATION TO SUDDENLY IN PRIVACY MODE. THESE PROBLEMS ARE WHILE IN MOTION AND SOMETIMES WHEN THE VEHICLE IS PARKED. PROBLEM 3: TRUCK SPEEDOMETER IS VERY DIFFICULT TO READ DUE TO HASH MARKS FOR SPEED INSTEAD OF NUMBERS AT 20, 40, 60, ETC SPEEDS. NEARLY GOT A TICKET FOR LOOKING DOWN TOO LONG TO READ MY DISPLAY. STARTING TO HATE THIS TRUCK AS I NEVER KNOW WHAT IT WILL DO OR NOT DO. THIS IS DANGEROUS AS IT IS A CONSISTENT DISTRACTION. SO MUCH FOR SAFETY DUE TO TECHNOLOGY. IF OTHERS HAVE THESE ISSUES WELL IT'S NO WONDER PEOPLE ARE DRIVING SO BADLY NOW.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-01-12
- VIN: 1FTPW14V49K

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my thoughts on my new F-150 truck. I've had it for a little while now and I have to say, I'm really impressed! My previous truck was a 'brand X' and it was always giving me trouble, so I was a bit hesitant to switch to a Ford. But I'm so glad I did! The interior is really tasteful and comfortable, and it's been super reliable so far. It's great for both regular truck duties and as a family hauler. Plus, I got a great deal on it - almost $7000 under sticker price! The only downside is that the gas mileage isn't great, but that's to be expected with a truck. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and I would definitely recommend the F-150 to anyone in the market for a new truck.
-
I purchased a 2009 F-150 Platinum about 4 months ago from a dealer. It had higher miles (about 79K). I highly recommend buying the extended bumper to bumper Ford Warranty (4 years/60K miles) for a Lariat, King Ranch or Platinum because of all the electronics. So far, I have had no problems with the truck. I just had the oil changed for the first time and had it checked over, and the mechanics couldn't find anything wrong. The F-150's are incredibly reliable. The 6-speed auto shifts seamlessly and the exhaust note is great! I love all the features, and the back seat is huge! My kids love it, and even my wife enjoys driving it because it sits up so high. Overall, it's the best vehicle purchase of my life!
-
This truck is a joy to drive! It's quick from the start and the stylish interior is great. The KR leather seats are especially comfortable and the back seat is much more spacious than prior models, with an extra 6 inches of legroom. Taller drivers will appreciate the additional room in the front seat. The navigation system is neat and the backup camera is a great feature. I also love the pickup bed step and the tailgate step. While the 6.5 foot bed can be a bit tricky to park, it's to be expected. The cup holder in the door is a great idea and the big gas tank is a huge plus. Overall, not only do I love this truck, but my wife and kids do too!
-
I bought my '09 FX4 S/crew 5.4L in August 2009 and it has been the best truck I have ever owned! Although I did have a minor issue with water coming into the cab through the windshield during the first year, it was promptly fixed. The A/C clutch also went out, but it was fixed under warranty. Other than that, it has been a great truck! I tow a 7000 lb travel trailer around Alaska and northern BC, and it handles towing up incredibly steep and long grades coming up mountain passes from the coast with ease. It also handles the 700 km gravel surface Dempster highway going up to the Arctic Ocean just as well as it does starting and driving in temperatures of -40 or colder. I plan on keeping this truck indefinitely!

Congratulations on your new ride! I just read about your recent purchase of a 09 F-150 Super Crew 4x4 with the 5.4 V-8. As a Dodge guy for many years, owning 8 Ram's to be exact, it's great to see you branching out and trying something new. I can definitely understand the importance of fuel efficiency, especially with gas prices at $3.00 a gallon and driving 24K miles + per year in the Mountains of Montana. It's impressive to hear that you averaged 17.8 mpg driving home from the dealer, 25,000 miles on your new ride. That's setting cruise at 78 on the freeway and at 73 on the highway, even with mountain terrain, couple of passes and rolling hill terrain. That's a 4.5 mpg boost from your previous Dodge Hemi! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the new body style, inside and out. It's great to see that Ford has figured out a way of making the interior look less cheap and more inviting. Keep up the good work! A+ so far.

I recently replaced my 07GMC with a new Platinum F150 4X4. However, I have been experiencing some issues with the A/C. It blows hot for the first 15 miles, which is quite frustrating. When I contacted the dealership, they informed me that this is normal and that it eventually cools off after 20 miles. Unfortunately, even after driving it for 100 miles, they did not do anything except refill the fuel tank. The vents also blow 20 degrees hotter than my other cars. On the bright side, I was able to get it serviced at an A/C shop in Conroe for only $54, and it turned out that it was only low on freon! Although I was disappointed that Ford was not willing to warranty the $54 to keep a customer, I still think it's a nice truck that you'll enjoy - as long as you don't need to use the A/C or the warranty! By the way, if anyone is interested in a new Platinum 150, let me know! LOL

Having trouble getting your furry friend to take a bath? Does your dog run away at the sound of running water? Look no further than the 2009 F-150! Simply wait for a rainy day, take your pup for a ride, and squirt some soap on the roof. With sprayers installed above the front and rear windshields and back corners of the roof, your cab transforms into a doggy bath. Afterward, open the doors to drain the water and crank up the heat for a quick dry. Your dog will be clean and happy in no time!

I recently purchased a Ford and have noticed a few things that could be improved. The seatbelt is located on the rear door, which can make it awkward to put on. Additionally, if someone is wearing the seatbelt in the front seat, it can be difficult to open the rear door. The ignition key hole is located deep inside the steering column, which can make it hard to find. While driving on the highway, I noticed a wind whistle coming from the windshield area. When attempting to change my own oil, I had trouble removing the oil filter with a normal wrench and had to purchase a special tool. The design of the rad hose causes it to rub against the hot oil filter, which is not ideal. Lastly, I find the headrests pointing forward to be uncomfortable. Despite these issues, I am still enjoying my new Ford.
