1996 Ford F-150 problems
The Ford F-Series is a series of light-duty trucks marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1948 model year. The F-Series is marketed as a range of full-sized pickup trucks positioned above the midsize Ranger but below the larger Super Duty in the Ford truck lineup. Alongside the F-150 (introduced in 1975), the F-Series also includes the Super Duty series (introduced in 1999), which includes the heavier-duty F-250 through F-450 pickups, F-450/F-550 chassis cabs, and F-600/F-650/F-750 Class 6–8 commercial trucks.
History
The F-Series was first introduced in 1948 as a replacement for a previous pickup model line based on car platforms.
The most popular version of the model line is the F-150 pickup truck, currently in its fourteenth generation (introduced for the 2021 model year). From 1953 to 1983, the entry-level F-Series pickup was the 1⁄2 ton F-100. Starting in 1984, the F-150 became the entry-level. The F-150 has a long-running high-performance off-road trim level introduced for 2010, the (SVT) Raptor currently consisting of three generations. Production of the F-150 SVT Raptor ended in 2014 and it was planned to be succeeded by a new F-150 Raptor, which is based on the thirteenth and fourteenth generation F-150.
The F-Series trucks have been developed into a wide range of design configurations. Alongside medium-duty trucks and "Big Job" conventional trucks (the forerunners of the Ford L-series), the model line has been marketed as a chassis-cab truck and a panel van (a predecessor of the Ford E-Series). The F-Series has served as the platform for various full-sized Ford SUVs, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Excursion. The F-Series has been marketed by its three North American brands: by Mercury as the M-Series (in Canada from 1948 to 1968), and by Lincoln in the 2000s, as the Blackwood and the later Mark LT (2010s for the latter in Mexico only).
Since 1977, the F-Series has remained the best-selling pickup truck line in the United States; it has been the best-selling vehicle overall since 1981. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over fifty years. As of the 2018 model year, the F-Series generated $41 billion (~$49 billion in 2023) in annual revenue for Ford. By January 2022, the F-Series models have sold over 40 million units. Currently, Ford manufactures the F-Series in four facilities in the United States.

Common 1996 Ford F-150 problems
The 1996 Ford F-150 is known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include alternator belt problems, automatic transmission issues, ball joint vulnerabilities, hard starting, suspension problems, and more.
- Automatic Transmission: If the TR/MLP sensor is faulty, the transmission is liable to fall out of alignment. Drivers have reported this problem most commonly in 1994-1995 model F-150s. Flare-up issues with the transmission have also been reported in 1990-1993 models, occurring when drivers shift the truck between the second and third gears. Ford has attributed this issue to distorted valve plates.
- Ball Joints: On 1990-1996 Ford F-150s, the ball joints have been particularly vulnerable to water exposure. If exposed, the ball joints are liable to expire prematurely, requiring replacement.
- Hard Starting: Drivers have reported complaints of hard-starting on 1990-1996 model F-150s. Ford attributed this issue to faulty harness wiring in the power control module. Symptoms of the problem include vehicular stalling, hesitation, and failure to start. On 1995 and 1996 Ford trucks, hard-starting has also been linked to a stuck idle air control valve, causing the engine to crank and stall or fail to start altogether.
- Suspension Problems: Owners of 1991 to 1994 Ford trucks have reported problems with the front suspension system. The problem is due to weak leaf springs along the front of the vehicle. To fix the issue, get newer, stronger leaf springs.
Additionally, the 1996 Ford F-150 has 411 problems and defects reported by F-150 owners. The worst complaints are fuel system, engine, and brakes problems.
In conclusion, the 1996 Ford F-150 has several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include alternator belt problems, automatic transmission issues, ball joint vulnerabilities, hard starting, suspension problems, and more. It is essential to address these problems promptly to ensure the vehicle's safety and reliability.

Extremely reliable, easy and inexpensive to maintain. Be prepared to have it for a long time. 15 mpg average.

I purchased this truck used from my local Ford dealer's lot. It was an older model to be on the front line of sales. At the time, I owned a 1995 F-150 LT and my mechanic was always asking me if I wanted to sell it. The Ford dealer was asking $9500 for the old Ford XLT with 100,000 miles on it. My mechanic gave me $5500 for my LX, so in my mind, I upgraded to the XLT Super for only $4000. My wife loves the truck because it's big and roomy. Currently, it has 137,000 miles on it, and I believe that with the cost of new trucks, I can rebuild this one many times. The mileage is around 11 MPG around town, which is similar to my friend's 2018 XLT. I might be interested in the new Ranger if it had a V6, but I would not consider a turbo 4 cylinder. The only 4 cylinder I would consider is a Tacoma.

I got my truck for $2000 two years ago. It tows my 32ft travel trailer like a dream and rides nice. I find it strong, fast, and comfy. I couldn't be happier!

Great truck! It's impressive that it gets 16 mpg in the city and 20 on the highway, especially with 135,000 miles on it and being in Michigan with no rust. The blue with gold Eddie Bauer edition looks and rides like new. I can't say anything bad about this truck.

I bought this truck back in 1998 for 40K and it has been a reliable companion ever since. Even after 140k miles, it still runs as well as the day I first got it. I use it to pull a 3500 lb boat on a weekly basis and it has never let me down. I did have to replace the front arm bushings, but other than that, I have only changed the oil, transmission fluid, and tires. I have tried various fuel additives, KN filters, and intake turbos, but it still only gets 13 mpg city, 15 highway, and 10 mpg when pulling the boat. Despite this, I am grateful for its dependability over the last 100,000 miles. My mechanic thinks it can go for another 200K plus. Although I hate to part with it, I need a bigger truck for my bigger boat.

I've had mine since it was new, which is about 8 years now. It gets fair gas mileage with 300 and 5 speed at around 15 MPG. I've heard that a 351 V8 gets better mileage. It still rides very smoothly, but the handling is a bit sloppy, which is understandable since its design dates back to 1967. Aside from needing a front end alignment, I've had very few problems with it and it has never left me stranded. The entire truck is holding up well despite my abuse - I actually use it like a pickup truck! I won't be buying a new F150 because of the high body sides and non-removable gate. I guess I'll have to buy an F250 instead!

Hey there! Just wanted to give you a heads up about fuel pump and fuel tank roll over valve replacements. They can be quite pricey since the tanks have to be dropped. Also, the standard 351 V-8 with 195 HP may not be the best for towing and can be a bit of a gas guzzler. Hope this helps!

I purchased the truck a year ago with 80,000 miles and have put 16,000 miles on it since then. I have done some maintenance work on it, but it is an older vehicle and has some rust. I was advised to get a manual transmission because it is the best option for the 4.9 engine, but I find shifting it to be a hassle. The truck is not very fast and only gets about 15 mpg. While the engine is great, I am not a fan of the M5OD transmission as it may not last long. I do need to replace some of the hydraulic lines, the master cylinder, and the slave cylinder due to age and leaks. Overall, it's not a bad truck, but I am looking forward to getting a car that is better on gas and easier to shift. I just needed to vent a little bit. Thank you for listening!
