The Ford F-Series is a series of light-duty trucks marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1948 model year. The F-Series is marketed as a range of full-sized pickup trucks positioned above the midsize Ranger but below the larger Super Duty in the Ford truck lineup. Alongside the F-150 (introduced in 1975), the F-Series also includes the Super Duty series (introduced in 1999), which includes the heavier-duty F-250 through F-450 pickups, F-450/F-550 chassis cabs, and F-600/F-650/F-750 Class 6–8 commercial trucks.

History

The F-Series was first introduced in 1948 as a replacement for a previous pickup model line based on car platforms.

The most popular version of the model line is the F-150 pickup truck, currently in its fourteenth generation (introduced for the 2021 model year). From 1953 to 1983, the entry-level F-Series pickup was the 1⁄2 ton F-100. Starting in 1984, the F-150 became the entry-level. The F-150 has a long-running high-performance off-road trim level introduced for 2010, the (SVT) Raptor currently consisting of three generations. Production of the F-150 SVT Raptor ended in 2014 and it was planned to be succeeded by a new F-150 Raptor, which is based on the thirteenth and fourteenth generation F-150.

The F-Series trucks have been developed into a wide range of design configurations. Alongside medium-duty trucks and "Big Job" conventional trucks (the forerunners of the Ford L-series), the model line has been marketed as a chassis-cab truck and a panel van (a predecessor of the Ford E-Series). The F-Series has served as the platform for various full-sized Ford SUVs, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Excursion. The F-Series has been marketed by its three North American brands: by Mercury as the M-Series (in Canada from 1948 to 1968), and by Lincoln in the 2000s, as the Blackwood and the later Mark LT (2010s for the latter in Mexico only).

Since 1977, the F-Series has remained the best-selling pickup truck line in the United States; it has been the best-selling vehicle overall since 1981. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over fifty years. As of the 2018 model year, the F-Series generated $41 billion (~$49 billion in 2023) in annual revenue for Ford. By January 2022, the F-Series models have sold over 40 million units. Currently, Ford manufactures the F-Series in four facilities in the United States.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-20
  • VIN: 1FTRX07W73K
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I purchased this F150 in November, 2023. The only code shown was a lean code, P0171. I removed the bed first to begin my inspection. Upon removing the original fuel tank, I discovered a gash in the top of the tank, about 1/8" wide by 3" long. It should have set a code like a missing gas cap would, but there was none. The gash appeared to be several years old due to the rust pitting. I believe the gash was a result of the cross member rubbing against the tank. The previous owner did not mention the defect. Fuel would have spilled out if the tank was completely filled. I did not find any service alerts for this though they may exist. The truck currently has 225k miles.

  • VIN: 1FTRW08L63K

  • Summary: Ford placed a decal on the rear differential that wraps all the way around the axle. This decal holds water and has caused any area touching the decal to rust excessively. Ford has told me that this will cause they rear differential fail. When this happens it will likely be when I'm driving with my wife and two young kids. The only way to know that this issue exists is to either get under the truck and remove the decal which causes and also covers the damage, or to have the axle give out while driving. This was recently discovered while working on the vehicle. I don't currently have pictures as the vehicle is in for other repairs, but I can get pictures once I get the vehicle back.

Negative 2003 Ford F-150 car reviews

  1. Ike Wunsch 2024-11-12

The truck was great for the first 650 miles with no problems. Although I have had issues with Fords in the past, I am hopeful that this one will be different. At 720 miles, the oil pressure switch broke, but the dealer replaced it at no charge. I'm crossing my fingers that this will be the last issue for a while!

  2. Dustin Haley 2024-11-02

When I went to purchase this truck, I wasn't initially fond of the interior. However, they made me an offer I couldn't refuse! I'm currently in the market for a new 2004.

  3. Ernie Tillman 2024-09-24

The transmission slipping and the rear banging on hills are common issues with this truck model. However, I am confident that the dealer will be able to address these concerns and provide a satisfactory solution. While I understand the frustration, I believe in the quality and reliability of this best-selling truck. There is no doubt in my mind that I made the right choice in purchasing it.

  4. Price O'Keefe 2024-09-20

Starting at 1k miles, the engine knocked like a diesel until it warmed up (65 degree weather, so it was not that cold). Ford claims that piston slap is normal. When running the truck kinda hard in every gear, when the transmission shifted, it made a screeching noise (dealer could not duplicate). The driver side door rattled like it was full of rocks. I had more faith in my 1985 F150 with 170k miles than I had with my 03 with 9k miles that I lost a lot of money on when I traded it in, because I could not see making one more payment on!

I used to own a 2002 Chevy TrailBlazer SLT. Unfortunately, I found that towing my 16ft. aluminum boat on a steep grade was rather difficult with the (15.8 MPG Hwy) 5.4 ltr V8. I believe that Chevy's 4.2 inline 6 cylinder would have been a better fit for my needs. Additionally, I was disappointed with the Lariat package of my F-150. It lacked heated seats and the convenience of a pocket on the back of the front seats. Furthermore, there was not enough storage room. Considering the price of this vehicle and the top-of-the-line Lariat package, I expected more features.

I hope you're enjoying your F-150! It sounds like it's been running smoothly with its 4.2L V6 engine.

  2. Eino Goldner 2024-11-12

Your last pickup was a 1988 F-150 regular cab, which you got 15 years ago. It had a stick, no air, and an upgraded XL package. However, now that you are finishing putting your kids through college, you decided it was time for an upgrade. You ordered exactly what you wanted - a 2 tone XLT with auto, air, and even a splurge of the Moon roof. It is your dream truck, right down to the colors you picked. To make it perfect, you had the dealer add the egg grate grill (same as the heritage edition with chrome trim) and chrome nurf bars. You recently traveled on a 1400 mile trip to get your daughter at college and it was very comfortable.

I had the chance to take a look inside my neighbor's 2008 Chevrolet Uplander LS and while it had a powerful V6 engine, it seemed to be lacking in other areas. It appears that the GM engineers focused too much on the engine and neglected other important features that would make the van more appealing, such as navigation, DVD players, high-end stereo systems, and even basic safety features like OnStar, which is only available on models that cost over $40,000. In comparison, my F-150, which cost less than the Uplander, has all the features I could possibly need. This experience was a turning point for me.

Hello! I'm so glad to hear that you're a pickup truck enthusiast! I completely understand the need for a vehicle that can accommodate a growing family. The Super Crew sounds like the perfect fit for you, especially with your height. It's great to hear that it handles well in the snow and that you find it easy to drive. The 5.4L engine sounds like it provides plenty of power for your needs. It's wonderful to hear that you've had no problems with it in the past 2 years and that the gas mileage is better than expected. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
