1997 Ford F-150 problems
The Ford F-Series is a series of light-duty trucks marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1948 model year. The F-Series is marketed as a range of full-sized pickup trucks positioned above the midsize Ranger but below the larger Super Duty in the Ford truck lineup. Alongside the F-150 (introduced in 1975), the F-Series also includes the Super Duty series (introduced in 1999), which includes the heavier-duty F-250 through F-450 pickups, F-450/F-550 chassis cabs, and F-600/F-650/F-750 Class 6–8 commercial trucks.
History
The F-Series was first introduced in 1948 as a replacement for a previous pickup model line based on car platforms.
The most popular version of the model line is the F-150 pickup truck, currently in its fourteenth generation (introduced for the 2021 model year). From 1953 to 1983, the entry-level F-Series pickup was the 1⁄2 ton F-100. Starting in 1984, the F-150 became the entry-level. The F-150 has a long-running high-performance off-road trim level introduced for 2010, the (SVT) Raptor currently consisting of three generations. Production of the F-150 SVT Raptor ended in 2014 and it was planned to be succeeded by a new F-150 Raptor, which is based on the thirteenth and fourteenth generation F-150.
The F-Series trucks have been developed into a wide range of design configurations. Alongside medium-duty trucks and "Big Job" conventional trucks (the forerunners of the Ford L-series), the model line has been marketed as a chassis-cab truck and a panel van (a predecessor of the Ford E-Series). The F-Series has served as the platform for various full-sized Ford SUVs, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Excursion. The F-Series has been marketed by its three North American brands: by Mercury as the M-Series (in Canada from 1948 to 1968), and by Lincoln in the 2000s, as the Blackwood and the later Mark LT (2010s for the latter in Mexico only).
Since 1977, the F-Series has remained the best-selling pickup truck line in the United States; it has been the best-selling vehicle overall since 1981. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over fifty years. As of the 2018 model year, the F-Series generated $41 billion (~$49 billion in 2023) in annual revenue for Ford. By January 2022, the F-Series models have sold over 40 million units. Currently, Ford manufactures the F-Series in four facilities in the United States.

Common 1997 Ford F-150 problems
The 1997 Ford F-150 is known to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine, transmission, and AC/heater systems.
- Transmission Problems: The 1997 Ford F-150 has had 8 NHTSA complaints related to transmission problems. A common issue is the transmission falling out of alignment, which can be caused by a faulty TR/MLP sensor. This can result in the engine flaring when shifting into fourth gear. Drivers have reported this problem mostly in 1994-1995 model F-150s, but it can also occur in earlier models.
- AC/Heater Problems: The 1997 Ford F-150 has experienced problems with the AC/heater system, with 3 NHTSA complaints reported. The most common cause of no heat in the cabin is a faulty blender motor. While the part is relatively inexpensive, replacing it requires disassembling the entire dashboard, which can be challenging and costly if a mechanic is involved.
- Rough Idle: Rough idle in the 1997 Ford F-150 is often caused by a sticking EGR sensor. This is a relatively simple and inexpensive issue to fix by replacing the sensor. Similarly, if the truck experiences high or low idle, the ISC valve may be sticking, which can be resolved by cleaning the valve.
- Rear End Noise: Constant noise from the rear end of the 1997 Ford F-150 can be a sign that the differential gears need to be replaced, especially if the noise is non-stop. If the noise only occurs during acceleration and braking, it may be due to a problem with the brakes or wheel bearings.
- Rust: Rust can be a significant issue in the 1997 Ford F-150, particularly in northern climates. It is essential to check the frame and main components of the vehicle for rust, as large rusty holes can indicate severe damage.
- Dash Issues: Dash paint chipping is common in the 1997 Ford F-150. While this is primarily a cosmetic issue, it can be a sign of wear and tear on the vehicle.
- Blown Head Gasket: A blown head gasket can be a severe problem in the 1997 Ford F-150. This issue can cause the engine to overheat and can result in significant damage if not addressed promptly.
- Intake Manifold Leaking: The intake manifold can leak in the 1997 Ford F-150, which can result in a loss of coolant and engine overheating.
- Exhaust Manifold Cracking: The exhaust manifold can crack in the 1997 Ford F-150, which can result in a loss of power and increased emissions.
In summary, the 1997 Ford F-150 has several common problems related to the engine, transmission, and AC/heater systems. Regular maintenance, such as replacing spark plugs and checking for rust, can help prevent some of these issues. However, other problems, such as a blown head gasket or leaking intake manifold, may require more significant repairs.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-13
- VIN: 1FTDX17WXVK
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I filled the fuel tank and let the vehicle set in my drive over night. In the morning as I was approaching the vehicle in preparation to drive to work, I smelled a strong odor of gasoline. I looked under the vehicle and saw a wet spot about 3 feet in diameter. The wet spot was gasoline. As i was investigating the leak, I noticed the front fuel tank retaining band rusted in two and fuel tank hanging low. Further investigation revealed there was a leak from the fuel pump access seal and hose connecting the filler neck to the tank. I had just driven the vehicle 130 miles the day before filling the fuel tank. If it hadn't been for the leaking fuel, I would have not have discovered that the tank was only secured by one badly rusted retaining band and would have continued to operate the vehicle normally and probably ultimately the second band would have broken allowing the fuel tank to fall from the vehicle. Ford informed there was a recall and the vehicle had been repaired in 2011. I purchased the vehicle in Jan. 30, 2012 and drive it daily.

Other than my heater core going out and the blender-door motor breaking, this truck has been the most reliable and comfortable vehicle I have driven. I must say it is one of Ford's best vehicles ever made. Although fuel economy is a downside, with a K & N air filter and fiberglass tonneau cover, you can get 25 mpg on the highway and 16 in the city. If you're looking for a truck, I highly recommend the F-150.

Overall, I'm glad to hear that you've been pleased with your truck. It's great to have a reliable vehicle.

You have a great truck! It's very reliable.

Your F150 sounds like a great truck! It's a '97 Ext. cab SB Lariat with only 76,000 miles. The 5.4L V8 engine provides plenty of power and the ride is smooth as glass on the highway. I noticed that the ride actually improves when adding load or towing. The interior design is elegant and user-friendly, and the build quality is top-notch, with little wind noise or rattles. You mentioned that the 5.4L engine is thirsty, getting an average of around 15-16 MPG in city driving, but overall it's a great truck. If you don't need the extra power, I would recommend the 4.6L engine. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I had a broken engine at 71,000 miles due to front cover gasket leaking into crankcase, which was not on the notification list about the problem. Unfortunately, Ford and the dealer were not able to do anything about it. Even though I had taken it to the dealer while under warranty, when the heater quit working, they did not notify me about the potential issue. Their excuse was a disconnected tube or something, which I found to be quite lame. Since then, I have had a broken tie rod while driving, crankshaft pulley broke off on the highway, and very poor gas mileage. As a result, I have decided to purchase a new truck, a Silverado.

My 1997 F-150 XLT 4x4 has approximately 165000 miles on it. Although it ran well when I first bought it, it developed a heavy cylinder misfiring issue. This is a common issue with many F-150s, especially the 4.6L V-8. Despite taking the truck into the shop three times to fix the issue, it is still misfiring and the cause cannot be diagnosed. I have found that I need to keep changing my spark plugs, which are almost impossible to access. The total cost of repairs for this issue has now reached nearly $500. Additionally, the 4-wheel drive system malfunctions and I hear a loud boom underneath the cab. It is clear that Ford needs to improve the quality of their vehicles.

I purchased this vehicle less than a year ago, after driving Fords for over 20 years with my job. However, I am disappointed with the 4.2 liter engine's reliability and will not consider purchasing another Ford product until improvements are made. I urge Ford to stand by their product and strive for better quality.

My F-150 2 dr 4.2 ltr has been sitting at my dealership for 6 months. Despite the engine dying at 68000 miles, Ford refuses to take responsibility for this issue. However, I have taken action and contacted the Attorney General in my area (Consumer Protection) and am currently awaiting their response. While this experience has left me feeling frustrated, I remain confident that I will receive the justice I deserve. Although I am disappointed with Ford, I will continue to pursue a resolution to this issue. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Sincerely, Lisa.
