Audi Tt problems

audi logo

The Audi TT is a production front-engine, 2-door, 2+2 sports coupé and roadster, manufactured and marketed by Audi from 1998 to 2023 across three generations.

For each of its three generations, the TT has been based on consecutive generations of Volkswagen's "Group A" platforms, starting with its "PQ34" fourth generation. The TT shares powertrain and suspension layouts with its platform mates, including the Audi A3, like a transversely mounted front-engine, powering front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, and fully independent suspension using MacPherson struts in front.

The TT's first two generations were assembled by Audi's Hungarian subsidiary, one of the world's largest engine manufacturing plants, using bodyshells manufactured and painted at Audi's Ingolstadt plant and parts made entirely by the Hungarian factory for the third generation.

The last of the 662,762 Audi TTs was manufactured in November 2023.

Common Audi Tt problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Audi TT, here are some common problems associated with this car:

  • Cam Belt: While not a problem with the car itself, the manufacturer's servicing recommendations for the cam belt in the Audi TT are crucial. Audi advises replacing the cam belt every 80,000 miles, but it is recommended to change it every 60,000 miles to prevent severe engine problems.
  • Water Pump: Similar to the cam belt, the water pump in the Audi TT has a lifespan of 60,000 miles. It is often recommended to replace both the cam belt and water pump simultaneously. Checking the service history for the last replacement is essential to avoid potential issues.
  • Gearbox: When test-driving a second-hand Audi TT, pay attention to the DSG gearbox's movement. If the gearbox feels hesitant or lacks the smooth motion it should have, it could indicate issues with the mechatronic unit. Repairing this can be expensive, costing at least four figures for a reconditioned unit.
  • Suspension: Listen for knocking sounds when driving an Audi TT, as this could indicate faulty bushes, particularly the roll bar bushes. Replacing the front wishbones and anti-roll bars may be necessary to address this issue.
  • Coil Pack: A common problem in Audi models, including the TT, is a failed coil pack in the engine. This issue can lead to misfiring and a rough ride, requiring the identification and replacement of the faulty coil pack.
  • Electric Window Switch: There have been reported issues with the electric windows in the Audi TT. Owners have experienced problems with the electric window switch, highlighting a potential area of concern in this vehicle.

These common problems with the Audi TT highlight areas where owners have experienced issues, emphasizing the importance of thorough inspections and maintenance when considering purchasing or owning this car.

How long do Audi TT engines last?

What is Audi Tt lifespan? The estimated lifespan of a Audi Tt is 239,000mi, before reaching the life expectancy upper limit. Fuel type is a major factor when looking into a vehicles lifespan/life expectancy.

Is Audi TT hard to maintain?

The first-generation Audi TTs can be expensive to maintain. The 2000 to 2006 TTs faced 13 recalls between those years, including at least one that can cause engine failure.

Is the Audi TT a reliable car?

The consensus from owners is that the TT boasts commendable reliability, with very few reports of significant mechanical failures. There were reports of minor electronic issues, but these were typically resolved without inconvenience.

Is an Audi TT expensive to maintain?

The cost of maintaining a premium car like a used Audi can be more expensive than maintaining a more budget model. Audi cars are built with high-quality components and years of expert engineering, so the maintenance and running costs line up with the initial higher cost of purchasing.

Latest negative Audi Tt car reviews

  1. Laurel West 2025-03-19

    Vehicle year: 2001

My 2001 Audi TT Roadster offers great driving performance and very reasonable gas mileage. Although, I must admit that maintenance has been a bit of a nightmare. Let's face it - for a $45,000 machine touted as a marvel of German engineering, some of the workmanship on this car is definitely on the 'el cheapo' side. Just to mention a few things: I had to replace the timing belt/tensioner TWICE in 2005 and 2007 ($1400 each time). The power top died in 2005 and I don't want to pay $2000 to replace it so I use manual lower and raise on the top. Unfortunately, just last week the window in the rear came unglued from the top. This is not really fixable and the replacement cost is about $3100.

  2. Adolph Funk 2025-03-17

    Vehicle year: 2004

I am taking legal action under the lemon law for this vehicle. Despite being a brand new car when purchased, it has been out of service for 23 days within the first 10 months of ownership due to numerous malfunctions. Potential buyers should be aware that this car may require frequent repairs and extended periods of time at the shop, possibly necessitating the use of a loaner vehicle.

  3. Trevion Feil 2025-03-16

    Vehicle year: 2000

I recently traded in my TT, which was a bit of a sad day for me as it is one of the most attractive production cars I've ever seen. Although it was certainly fun to drive, it spent a lot of time in the shop. However, good looks and performance are only part of the equation. Nowadays, you expect a $30k car to be well-designed and well-built. Unfortunately, my model did not meet these expectations and was not reliable, as confirmed by Consumer Reports. On the bright side, I am happy to say that my payments to the service department at Audi will cease.

  4. Harley Jacobi 2025-02-14

    Vehicle year: 2003

Great little car! Unfortunately, it can be over-engineered and difficult to repair. Even minor repairs may require partial disassembly. Labor charges are high, and since the parts usually must be ordered from Germany, their cost is also high. You should expect to spend as much or more on repairs as you spend on the purchase price (for a used TT).

  5. Tyree Boehm 2025-01-17

    Vehicle year: 2000

I am extremely dissatisfied with my car. Despite having only 40,000 miles, it has experienced multiple issues with the electrical, radiator fans, cooling module, and suspension. These issues have been quite costly to repair, and I find it unacceptable that a car with such low mileage would experience such problems. I would advise others to consider alternative options before making a similar purchase.

Latest positive Audi Tt car reviews

  1. Stewart Cummings 2025-03-28

    Vehicle year: 2010

This is my Audi TT 3.2L quattro cabriolet. I've owned it for multiple years now and every time I think I want to look at other cars for a possible trade, I get in and drive and realize it still holds my heart. It's a great little sports car that gives excellent handling, acceleration, and puts a smile on the driver's face every time. When I was searching for a new car, I looked at just about every convertible in the market at that time, but no other car had the combination of perks and handling that I was searching for. Once I made the decision, finding this car took another six months, but it was worth the wait. Since then, it has been my daily driver and I have learned all its quirks and joys. Its acceleration is beyond fun and when I put it into launch mode, it borders on scary. I know many complain that an automatic transmission is just boring, but for my needs, I find it to be just right. And when I want to get aggressive with my driving, going into Sport mode and using those flappy paddles is just great. However, one thing I have noted as a minus is the ease of tires braking loose during heavy braking. It took me a while to get used to how the brakes work on this car, but once that was done, it's been resolved. My only real complaint I would lodge against the car is the navigation system, but I have the same gripe on every other car I've driven that includes it. The nav systems are ALL slow to respond, much less helpful than a Garmin or other dedicated GPS. For that reason, I've always maintained a Garmin, especially for trips. Maintenance has not been too much of a problem with this car, but I would note I have had issues with the convertible action. While still under warranty, I had the motors replaced. However, there seems to be a recurring issue with keeping the top down sensor adjusted correctly, which has required multiple services. Although the manufacturer claims that you can open/close the top while driving up to 18 mph, their technicians advise that it should only be done when parked on a level surface with the brake held in place. Perhaps this function has been repaired in the past decade, but I am doubtful. Unfortunately, I will need to take it in for servicing again. Currently, I frequently spend a couple of minutes lowering/raising/lowering the top until the status light goes out, otherwise, it beeps out a warning that the top is not completely opened every couple of minutes--very irritating. However, I would still recommend trying out this great little car before dismissing it just because it's not a BMW or Benz. You might be pleasantly surprised. Update 2/2/2019: I still own this little joy and every time I consider selling, I just take it out for a drive--that settles the argument going on in my brain. Get a TT!!!

This car is amazing! It's so much fun to drive and has made my daily commute to work an absolute joy. After considering Porsche, BMW, Lexus, Infiniti, I ultimately chose the Audi and I'm so glad I did. The car has plenty of torque to quickly get up to speed and pass other vehicles on the road. The brakes are responsive without being too aggressive. Even though my wife and I didn't plan on taking our girls in it, they absolutely love it! It's always a blast dropping them off at school in this car, especially when surrounded by huge SUVs and minivans. I was worried about fitting all my groceries and Costco purchases in such a small car, but it has yet to disappoint me. Overall, I'm thoroughly enjoying my mid-life crisis mobile!

I bought this sports car for my wife as she wanted to own one before she got 'old'. She previously owned a 1976 Porsche 911, but she loves this car even more. She says that the TT is her best car ever. We bought a red coupe, which is perfect for her petite size, and she loves the attention it gets. The car's handling is great, and it wants to be driven. Before she knows it, the spoiler pops up, and she notices that she's going 80 miles plus. The trunk is spacious enough for a weekend trip. Although I find the seat too confining for me on a long drive, it's her car, and she loves it. When Mama's happy, everybody's happy.

What more can I say?! This car is so fun to drive. The V6 and DSG really take it to another level. You have to try the DSG to believe how quick and smooth it is. The tuned sound from the exhaust makes you feel like you're inside an F1 car. The 4WD takes me anywhere I want to go, even to the nearest skiing resort in the winter. It's so versatile that I can even fit 2 golf bags at the back (both rear seats have to be folded down) without any problem. And if I need to put a car seat at the back (yes, you can put a car seat at the back), it becomes my family sport wagon. My 2-year-old daughter loves to ride in my red TT.

The first few months of ownership were a bit challenging due to some computer-related and dealer repair issues, which took almost a month to resolve. However, it's hard to find a replacement vehicle at this price point that offers the same style and design features as the TT Roadster. The Baseball Optic leather seats with dark blue and blue canvas roof and brushed metal hardware are absolutely stunning and have held up well over time. They truly reflect the high standards of Audi's designers and engineers. The power train and exhaust have been very reliable, providing more than enough horsepower and torque for everyday driving, and the all-wheel drive has come in handy when needed. While the 'Keyless' entry occasionally requires reprogramming and eats batteries, it's a minor issue that can be easily resolved.
