Audi Q7 problems
The Audi Q7 is a crossover SUV made by the German manufacturer Audi, unveiled in September 2005 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Production of this seven-seater SUV began in the autumn of 2005 at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant in Bratislava, Slovakia.
The Q7 was the first SUV sold by Audi and went on sale in 2006. Later, Audi's second SUV, the Q5, was unveiled as a 2009 model. Audi has since unveiled a third SUV model, the Q3, which went on sale in the third quarter of 2011, and a fourth SUV model, the Q2, which went on sale in November 2016. The Q7 shares a Volkswagen Group MLB platform and chassis with the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne and the Volkswagen Touareg.
The Q7 is the second largest vehicle from Audi, after its exterior size was being surpassed by the Q6 since 2022. While the Q7 has been the flagship SUV in Audi's product portfolio, a top-of-the-line model with a lower roof, called the Audi Q8, was released in 2018.
It was one of the vehicles involved in the Volkswagen emissions scandal, with the company ordered to buy back some of the affected cars manufactured between 2009 and 2012. The Q7 is also subject to hundreds of NTSB complaints with many relating to potentially catastrophic engine failure issues, and a class-action lawsuit related to squealing brakes.

Common Audi Q7 problems
The Audi Q7, a luxury midsize SUV, has been in production since 2005 and is known for its advanced technology and spacious interior. However, like any vehicle, the Audi Q7 can experience common problems. This article will discuss some of the most frequently reported issues with the Audi Q7, focusing on electrical problems, engine oil consumption, turbocharger issues, transmission problems, and brake pedal pulsing.
- Electrical Issues: Electrical problems in the Audi Q7 can manifest as issues with lighting, infotainment systems, or power windows. These issues can be frustrating and affect the overall driving experience. They are often marked by the check engine light. When facing electrical problems, consult a qualified technician experienced with Audi’s complex electrical systems. Regular maintenance can help prevent these issues by identifying and addressing potential problems early.
- Engine Oil Consumption: Oil leaks are a common concern among Audi Q7 owners. They are often the result of gasket failures, issues with the oil filter housing, or valve cover gaskets. You would often notice a popping noise from the engine bay near the intake manifold when there’s low oil. Always keep track of your last oil change. Solution: Address oil leaks by having the gaskets and seals inspected and replaced as necessary. Regular oil changes with high-quality oil can help maintain gasket health and prevent leaks.
- Turbocharger Problems: Some Q7 models equipped with turbochargers may experience issues, such as reduced performance and unusual noises. Solution: Preventing turbocharger problems involves using high-quality oil, adhering to recommended maintenance intervals, and regular inspection of the turbocharger for signs of wear.
- Transmission Issues: Transmission problems in the Audi Q7 can manifest as rough shifting, slipping, or delayed engagement. These issues can be caused by various factors, including worn clutch plates, low transmission fluid, or faulty solenoids. Solution: Address transmission issues by having the transmission inspected and serviced as necessary. Regular maintenance, including transmission fluid changes, can help prevent these issues.
- Brake Pedal Pulsing: The brake pedal pulsing when you push down on it can be caused by worn or damaged front brake discs. This issue is more commonly reported in the Audi Q7. Solution: Replace the worn or damaged brake discs and check the brake pads for excessive wear.
Regular maintenance and timely resolution of these issues are essential to ensure a satisfying ownership experience with the Audi Q7. Staying ahead of maintenance is key to preserving the joy of owning an Audi Q7.

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
- VIN: WA1LAAF75JD

Audi Q7 2018
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-19
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
- VIN: WA1VAAF79JD
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: We were driving down the expressway when the car began to vibrate. We pulled over and had lights on the dash. We had it towed to a dealership where it was diagnosed as a burnt valve and ruined motor. I believe a new Audi engine quote was around $26,000. We took very good care of this car. This is a common issue and will become more common as these engines fail.

- VIN: WA1LYAFE0AD
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: Yokohama Parada Spec-x tire, R275/45/R20 tread separation from belt. Second tire to do so since the start of 2024. Had to buy another brand name and tire after second tire separated from belts on 07/03/2024, causing me to spend $983.59 on new tires. There definitely something wrong with this line of Yokohama tires.
Audi Q7 2011
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-05
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-18
- VIN: WA1WMBFE0BD
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The Bosch CP4 High Pressure Fuel Pump failed suddenly at interstate speed (65-70mph) as I was driving up a hill in 3 lanes of traffic. The car stalled immediately and lost all motive power. I had to limp across 3 lanes of traffic to get to the shoulder right away, risking collision from passing vehicles. I could provide the damaged pump for inspection if needed. It's a common failure of the CP4 design, disintegrating and pushing tiny metal shards throughout the fuel system including injectors. The CP4 has been recalled on many vehicles previously. The problem has been diagnosed by the Audi dealership and confirmed the Bosch CP4 pump failed and destroyed the entire fuel system. The car has been dealership maintained since new and had no warning signs of failure, or lights. It was running perfectly prior to this incident. Because of the location of the incident there was a 5 hour delay in roadside assistance, in which my family sat on the side of the road.

Audi Q7 2017
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-02
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-16
- VIN: WA1LAAF76HD
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: There is an existing recall for certain Audi Q7 front side marker lights (Audi recall campaign 97CB, NHTSA campaign ID 16V642000) but this recall is too narrow. It does not include my vehicle but I have the same problem. Many other Q7 owners do as well. The Audi dealership will not honor repair or replacement, not even under warranty. The only way to fix this problem according to Audi is to purchase a new light assembly for over $6,000. Please expand the existing recall to cover all impacted owners.

Audi Q7 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-13
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-14
- VIN: WA1VAAF7XKD
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: Rear coil springs broke after just 60,000 miles. Audi refused to cover but dealer said this is very common. Vehicle stability affected. After my 42 years in automotive industry as a supplier my bet is these springs are made in China and supplier is cheating on material specifications and Audi must know.
Audi Q7 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-11
- VIN: WA1AHAF71KD
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: On October 9, I brought my 2019 Audi Q7 with approximately 79k miles to my dealership service department for an oil change and an inspection sticker. While in for the service, the dealership performed a multi-point inspection. During the inspection, the service technician found that both rear coils were broken off of the base. The technician recommended that these be replaced immediately and need immediate attention. The cost of the repair is over $3,000 and would then require an alignment and calibration, costing an additional over $500. I understand that these coils were recalled in later model Audi Q7's but not my year. Based upon this, it seems that the coils are defective and there should be additional recalls. There really is no reason for coils to break on a car that has such a large towing capacity (though I don't tow anything on the car and don't have a tow hitch). This is a safety issue for the car's performance and control.
Audi Q7 2017

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-05
- VIN: WA1VAAF70HD
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: My 7 year old car now display the below error and Audi says it will cost $6000 to fix this. $6K to fix a broken light is unacceptable especially because it is a known issue. Audi recall campaign 97CB (NHTSA campaign ID 16V642000) addresses this exact issue.
Audi Q7 2017
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-02
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-04
- VIN: WA1LAAF72HD
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: My 2017 Audi Q7 is reporting a "front right side marker light defective" message. This happened after the car was brought into the dealer. The light is functional according to the dealer and visual inspection but I was told this is a nuisance error message. The dealer said even though it is working fine, I can pay $4,000 to have the light replaced to make the message go away. Or the other option is to just live with it, which means when it does go out I won't know that it has failed. This seems like a defective part that should be recalled.
Audi Q7 2017
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-14
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-01
- VIN: WA1LAAF74HD
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: I keep getting a "Front right side marker light defective." error. There is nothing wrong with the lamp but Audi wants to charge $4,000 to fix. This appears to be happening to other Q7 owners so I am reporting.
Audi Q7 2017

Vehicle year: 2017
I spent a lot of time researching and comparing the Q7 with the 2016 BMW X5 and the Volvo XC90. I traded in my 2014 MDX. This car is a huge improvement over the MDX in terms of refinement and build quality. It drives like a sports car and is as quiet as a Range Rover. Car & Driver made 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, which is impressive for a 5,000 pound SUV. The dash layout is perfect with real buttons that have a quality feel. The silly Senus system in the Volvo and my antiquated MDX required at least 2 button presses of the touch screens just to get to a setting, which was ridiculous. The Q7 is so quiet, even when in dynamic mode. I opted for the air suspension and 4 wheel steering option, which makes a noticeable difference. The TFT gauge cluster displays Google maps in full glory and is highly configurable to show all information. The heads up display is a huge bonus. The safety and technology features are abundant and although some are intuitive, I recommend reading the owner's manual from cover to cover. The MMI system works flawlessly for navigation, maps, telephone, audio and all of the cool Audi Connect services. This new Q7 is like a spaceship. It is the best car I have ever bought by far. Driving this car after driving the MDX and X5 is like night and day. The XC90 was a nice demo, but it just wasn't up to the level of performance that the Q7 has. The XC-90 is a bit more luxurious with really nice front seats, but the 4 cylinder was loud when accelerating and idling was rough. In the Q7 you can't even hear it when stopped. But when I get on it for a strong burst of acceleration, it sings a pretty song. This is an incredible automobile. I love this SUV!

This car is amazing! I have driven some of the nicest cars on the road today, and I truly believe that this is one of the nicest luxury cars out there. We purchased the car used, and so far, we have had no issues. I do worry about the long-term cost of ownership, but with a good extended warranty and some planning, that risk is very manageable. We purchased the V-8, and I was initially worried about fuel efficiency. However, it is actually better than the Volvo XC90 T6 we replaced it with. While it can get thirsty if you jackrabbit at every stop, a mix of city and highway driving will easily yield 18mpg or better. What's great about Audi's is that they are high-end but not snobby. You will absolutely love this car!

We recently explored various options in the 3-row SUV market, including the BMW X5 and the Volkswagen Atlas, but ultimately decided on the 2021 Audi Q7. It offers an unbeatable combination of space, luxury, features, design, and performance. The Q7 boasts a stunning interior and exterior design. The cockpit features three screens for viewing gauges, infotainment, and HVAC, among other things. While the tech may be slightly overwhelming at first, it works seamlessly once you get the hang of it. The seating is incredibly comfortable, and you can adjust the legroom by sliding the middle seats forwards and backwards. We particularly love the giant glass roof and the fantastic LED headlights. However, we were surprised to find that remote starting is not included, even on Premium Plus models like ours. The Audi website could do a better job of listing all the standard features in one place. Nevertheless, the Q7's turbo V6 model has more than enough power, and it's surprisingly quick with a 5.0 second 0-60 time according to Car and Driver. The Q7 is very well built and feels incredibly solid and tight over bumpy roads and potholes. While the pricing is towards the premium end of the spectrum, we believe it's worth every penny.

Great ride! It's very comfortable and has plenty of power. However, I noticed that there is no storage in the center console, not even a place to store sunglasses. Additionally, the cup holders are extra small and the windshield washer sprayers are sub par. These are small but very annoying defects for a high-end vehicle.

I can understand your frustration with the lack of USB ports in your 2015 car, especially since it seems like such a common feature in newer models. It's disappointing that there isn't even a charger socket in the armrest, but I'm glad to hear that you're still enjoying the SUV's capabilities. It's a shame that you weren't able to purchase the TDI due to the VW scandal, but I'm pleased to hear that the new 3.0T is performing well. While the backup camera setup could be improved, it's great that more options have become standard, such as keyless entry and start, and XM traffic info on the nav display. The ventilated seats in the S line or prestige package sound like a great addition, and the black optics package is a nice touch. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the car, and I hope you continue to enjoy driving it!

I recently purchased a 2021 Audi Q7, but unfortunately, I have had some issues with it. Before reaching 18K miles, I had to replace the exterior sensors twice, an interior light, and one of the required $600 'drive flat' tires. Each time I took the vehicle to the dealership, it took at least a month to repair. In my experience with Acura, Range Rover, Toyota, Lexus, Volkswagen, Subaru, Chevrolet, and Ford vehicles, I have found the Audi to be the most unreliable. I would caution anyone considering purchasing an Audi to thoroughly research the vehicle and dealership before making a decision.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my Audi Q7 S-Line that I purchased back in 2011. While I've had a few repairs and recalls, I've found that the electrical system has been a bit problematic. In 2014, I had to change the first sensor door handle, but thankfully it was covered under warranty. Recently, I had to replace all four handles and the battery, which ended up being a bit costly at over $2,500. I've noticed that this seems to be a common issue with this model, and I've reached out to Audi Customer Service to see if they can help. While it's been over a month and I haven't received a decision yet, I'm hopeful that they'll be able to assist me. Despite these issues, I still believe that Audi is a premium car brand and I'm proud to own one.

The car's drive mode is incredibly smooth, while sport mode is initially jerky but quickly becomes smooth and fast. Although the 8-speed Tiptronic is not a true manual transmission, it is impressively smooth and responsive. The transmission is designed to prioritize engine safety, so it won't shift to a lower gear if the RPMs are too high. While this may limit control in certain situations, it ultimately ensures a safe and reliable driving experience. The car's weight can make it feel a bit mushy on curves, but it handles well overall and provides a quiet ride. The car is fully featured and boasts several impressive details, such as the dual sun visors on each side and the sleek pullout extension for additional sun blockage. However, it is worth noting that maintenance can be expensive, as the tires and brakes may need to be replaced frequently. Additionally, the car may burn oil between changes, but this is a normal occurrence that can be easily remedied by adding a can or two. Overall, the car is a reliable and impressive vehicle that is well worth the investment.I experienced major dashboard warning lights twice and had to bring the car in for repairs, in addition to regular maintenance. The first time was for the “Audi Q7 engine emission warning light” and the “Audi Q7 glow plugs pre heating warning light.” The lower fuel pump had to be changed due to exposure to bad diesel. Two months later, the same warning lights appeared and the fuel filter and all the fuel lines had to be changed due to bad diesel. Fortunately, the car is still under warranty, but the thought of having to pay for all this is concerning. I hope this issue has been resolved, but I remain skeptical since I only go to major brand fuel stations.

I am sorry to hear about the issues you have faced with your 2014 Audi Q7. It must have been frustrating to have to replace the water pump and the plastic lens on the headlight. It is unfortunate that Audi has refused to replace the defective plastic lens on the headlight, even though the vehicle is still under warranty. I understand your disappointment with their response. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We appreciate your feedback and will take it into consideration. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do to assist you.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Audi car. I've been a loyal Audi owner since the beginning and have taken great care of it with regular maintenance, repairs, and parts replacements. However, I did notice that after reaching 95,000 miles, it started to experience some issues. I had to replace the brakes every 15,000 miles and the tires every 25,000 miles, in addition to spending $7,800 on parts and labor. While I expected my car to last longer than 100,000 miles, I still appreciate the time I had with it. How has your experience been with your car?
