Audi Q7 problems

The Audi Q7 is a crossover SUV made by the German manufacturer Audi, unveiled in September 2005 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Production of this seven-seater SUV began in the autumn of 2005 at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant in Bratislava, Slovakia.
The Q7 was the first SUV sold by Audi and went on sale in 2006. Later, Audi's second SUV, the Q5, was unveiled as a 2009 model. Audi has since unveiled a third SUV model, the Q3, which went on sale in the third quarter of 2011, and a fourth SUV model, the Q2, which went on sale in November 2016. The Q7 shares a Volkswagen Group MLB platform and chassis with the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne and the Volkswagen Touareg.
The Q7 is the second largest vehicle from Audi, after its exterior size was being surpassed by the Q6 since 2022. While the Q7 has been the flagship SUV in Audi's product portfolio, a top-of-the-line model with a lower roof, called the Audi Q8, was released in 2018.
It was one of the vehicles involved in the Volkswagen emissions scandal, with the company ordered to buy back some of the affected cars manufactured between 2009 and 2012. The Q7 is also subject to hundreds of NTSB complaints with many relating to potentially catastrophic engine failure issues, and a class-action lawsuit related to squealing brakes.

Common Audi Q7 problems
The Audi Q7, a luxury midsize SUV, has been in production since 2005 and is known for its advanced technology and spacious interior. However, like any vehicle, the Audi Q7 can experience common problems. This article will discuss some of the most frequently reported issues with the Audi Q7, focusing on electrical problems, engine oil consumption, turbocharger issues, transmission problems, and brake pedal pulsing.
- Electrical Issues: Electrical problems in the Audi Q7 can manifest as issues with lighting, infotainment systems, or power windows. These issues can be frustrating and affect the overall driving experience. They are often marked by the check engine light. When facing electrical problems, consult a qualified technician experienced with Audi’s complex electrical systems. Regular maintenance can help prevent these issues by identifying and addressing potential problems early.
- Engine Oil Consumption: Oil leaks are a common concern among Audi Q7 owners. They are often the result of gasket failures, issues with the oil filter housing, or valve cover gaskets. You would often notice a popping noise from the engine bay near the intake manifold when there’s low oil. Always keep track of your last oil change. Solution: Address oil leaks by having the gaskets and seals inspected and replaced as necessary. Regular oil changes with high-quality oil can help maintain gasket health and prevent leaks.
- Turbocharger Problems: Some Q7 models equipped with turbochargers may experience issues, such as reduced performance and unusual noises. Solution: Preventing turbocharger problems involves using high-quality oil, adhering to recommended maintenance intervals, and regular inspection of the turbocharger for signs of wear.
- Transmission Issues: Transmission problems in the Audi Q7 can manifest as rough shifting, slipping, or delayed engagement. These issues can be caused by various factors, including worn clutch plates, low transmission fluid, or faulty solenoids. Solution: Address transmission issues by having the transmission inspected and serviced as necessary. Regular maintenance, including transmission fluid changes, can help prevent these issues.
- Brake Pedal Pulsing: The brake pedal pulsing when you push down on it can be caused by worn or damaged front brake discs. This issue is more commonly reported in the Audi Q7. Solution: Replace the worn or damaged brake discs and check the brake pads for excessive wear.
Regular maintenance and timely resolution of these issues are essential to ensure a satisfying ownership experience with the Audi Q7. Staying ahead of maintenance is key to preserving the joy of owning an Audi Q7.

- VIN: WA1LAAF75JD

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
- VIN: WA1VAAF79JD
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: We were driving down the expressway when the car began to vibrate. We pulled over and had lights on the dash. We had it towed to a dealership where it was diagnosed as a burnt valve and ruined motor. I believe a new Audi engine quote was around $26,000. We took very good care of this car. This is a common issue and will become more common as these engines fail.

Had to buy another brand name and tire after second tire separated from belts on 07/03/2024, causing me to spend $983.59 on new tires. There definitely something wrong with this line of Yokohama tires.
Audi Q7 2011
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-05
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-18
- VIN: WA1WMBFE0BD
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The Bosch CP4 High Pressure Fuel Pump failed suddenly at interstate speed (65-70mph) as I was driving up a hill in 3 lanes of traffic. The car stalled immediately and lost all motive power. I had to limp across 3 lanes of traffic to get to the shoulder right away, risking collision from passing vehicles. I could provide the damaged pump for inspection if needed. It's a common failure of the CP4 design, disintegrating and pushing tiny metal shards throughout the fuel system including injectors. The CP4 has been recalled on many vehicles previously. The problem has been diagnosed by the Audi dealership and confirmed the Bosch CP4 pump failed and destroyed the entire fuel system. The car has been dealership maintained since new and had no warning signs of failure, or lights. It was running perfectly prior to this incident. Because of the location of the incident there was a 5 hour delay in roadside assistance, in which my family sat on the side of the road.

Audi Q7 2017
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-02
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-16
- VIN: WA1LAAF76HD
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: There is an existing recall for certain Audi Q7 front side marker lights (Audi recall campaign 97CB, NHTSA campaign ID 16V642000) but this recall is too narrow. It does not include my vehicle but I have the same problem. Many other Q7 owners do as well. The Audi dealership will not honor repair or replacement, not even under warranty. The only way to fix this problem according to Audi is to purchase a new light assembly for over $6,000. Please expand the existing recall to cover all impacted owners.

Audi Q7 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-13
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-14
- VIN: WA1VAAF7XKD
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: Rear coil springs broke after just 60,000 miles. Audi refused to cover but dealer said this is very common. Vehicle stability affected. After my 42 years in automotive industry as a supplier my bet is these springs are made in China and supplier is cheating on material specifications and Audi must know.
Audi Q7 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-11
- VIN: WA1AHAF71KD
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: On October 9, I brought my 2019 Audi Q7 with approximately 79k miles to my dealership service department for an oil change and an inspection sticker. While in for the service, the dealership performed a multi-point inspection. During the inspection, the service technician found that both rear coils were broken off of the base. The technician recommended that these be replaced immediately and need immediate attention. The cost of the repair is over $3,000 and would then require an alignment and calibration, costing an additional over $500. I understand that these coils were recalled in later model Audi Q7's but not my year. Based upon this, it seems that the coils are defective and there should be additional recalls. There really is no reason for coils to break on a car that has such a large towing capacity (though I don't tow anything on the car and don't have a tow hitch). This is a safety issue for the car's performance and control.
Audi Q7 2017

- VIN: WA1VAAF70HD

- Summary: My 7 year old car now display the below error and Audi says it will cost $6000 to fix this. $6K to fix a broken light is unacceptable especially because it is a known issue. Audi recall campaign 97CB (NHTSA campaign ID 16V642000) addresses this exact issue.
Audi Q7 2017
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-02
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-04
- VIN: WA1LAAF72HD
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: My 2017 Audi Q7 is reporting a "front right side marker light defective" message. This happened after the car was brought into the dealer. The light is functional according to the dealer and visual inspection but I was told this is a nuisance error message. The dealer said even though it is working fine, I can pay $4,000 to have the light replaced to make the message go away. Or the other option is to just live with it, which means when it does go out I won't know that it has failed. This seems like a defective part that should be recalled.
Audi Q7 2017
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-14
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-01
- VIN: WA1LAAF74HD
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: I keep getting a "Front right side marker light defective." error. There is nothing wrong with the lamp but Audi wants to charge $4,000 to fix. This appears to be happening to other Q7 owners so I am reporting.

This is my first return to a German car in 6 years. I'm glad to say that this car feels rock solid. The handling and seating position make for comfortable commutes on DC's Capital Beltway. I also appreciate the parking sensors and rear backup camera, which are great features. While the MMI and nav. system takes some setup and getting used to, once you've mastered it, it is quick and convenient. Lastly, the 6 speed auto delivers on its promises.

I couldn't resist reviewing the 2010 Audi Q7. It's like having both my previous cars, the 07 MBSL550 and the '08 Lexus RX400h, combined into one. The diesel engine is impressively quiet and powerful, and I'm getting great mileage so far - 23 combined, 21 city, and 29 on the highway cruising from Vegas to LA at 82mph. What really sold me on the Q7 was the ride quality - it's as smooth as a Lexus but corners like a sedan, with no body roll or motion sickness. I test drove the new MDX, MBML, and X5 35, but the Audi beat them all in terms of comfort and performance. The X5 was difficult to steer in parking, and the MB was too pricey with no real advantage over the Audi.

I've been driving the BMW 750LI for many years, with a Range Rover in between. I recently switched to the Audi Q7 and I must say, it's a beautiful and well-appointed vehicle. The technology is impressive, although it can be smarter than the operator at times. The handling is also fantastic, making for an effortless and enjoyable drive. It did take a little getting used to sitting a little higher up, but overall I'm thrilled with my new 2018 Q7. I highly recommend this vehicle to all my family and friends!

The Audi Q7 was a pleasant surprise for us. We visited our local Audi dealer to check out a 2021 BMW X5 with 1800 miles on it. Since we already own an X3 2014 and wanted something bigger, we thought the X5 would be perfect. However, during the test drive, we were disappointed with the way it downshifted and handled. The salesman suggested we try the Audi for comparison, and we were blown away. The Audi is incredibly quiet, fast, and the Apple Play feature is life-changing. It can read your texts and emails aloud and send you alerts if you want. You can listen to all your music and podcasts, and the phone is so clear it sounds better than my landline. The infotainment system is easy to use, even if you're not tech-savvy. Despite its size, the car is easy and comfortable to drive, with the comfort and smoothness of a Cadillac and the sportiness and handling of our X3. My husband says it's like our old Range Rover and X3 had a baby. We opted for the premier package due to the double-pane windows, which help reduce noise on our state's noisy roads. The visibility is excellent, and there are many safety features too, including surround sound 3D stereo. The third-row seat is small, but it's perfect for emergencies. One feature I love is the ability to heat or cool the seat only on the bottom or only on my back, or both, which is great for long road trips. We considered other SUVs like the Range Rover, Tahoe, Explorer, Lexus G460, and Mercedes, but after reading numerous reviews and watching YouTube, we decided to go with the Audi. The only thing we don't like is the shiny black plastic trim inside along the dashboard, but it's an easy fix. We have a local company that wraps cars, and they're going to put a clear flat wrap on the dashboard to take away the shininess. Update April 2022: We still love this car and have taken it on some long road trips.Driving the AUDI Q7 is stress-free and enjoyable. The car provides a cocoon of silence, even at high speeds, with hardly any road noise. During one trip, a truck dropped a 25lb bag of dry concrete about a mile ahead of us, causing chaos on the road. However, the AUDI Q7 handled the situation with ease, and we were able to navigate around it without feeling out of control. The car's stability and control were impressive, and it felt like the car was saying, 'I got this.' We never ended up putting anything on the shiny part of the dashboard, but it doesn't bother us anymore. Every time we get into the car, we smile at each other and appreciate how lucky we are to own it. Although we considered selling it since it's worth more than what we paid, we always change our minds after taking it for a spin.

I've only had my Q7 for a couple of weeks, and I must say, coming from an Ultra Premium Plus A4, this SUV definitely feels more luxurious. The pano roof is great, and the Bang & Olufsen stereo is my favorite. The ride is great, with the exception of the seat, which is okay but not great. The technology is on point, but it can be very distracting. I suggest using the Audi cockpit for changing the radio, etc., while driving. There is no cargo space unless the 3rd row is down, which I'm fine with. The exterior style of the car is nice, with a touch of sportiness, and I love the turbine wheels. My son, who is almost 6ft, has headroom and a little more legroom in the SUV, and that was a big factor in this lease. Overall, I'm happy so far.

I really enjoy driving the Q7, it's a well-built SUV. However, I was disappointed with the customer service and attention to detail from Audi, especially considering the $60K price tag. Unfortunately, I experienced some serious electrical problems during the first week of driving it out of the dealership. Although they did fix it, the dealer's reaction was less than satisfactory. The battery also died several times and had to be jumpstarted, which was frustrating. After bringing it in three times, Audi finally discovered that the software had a glitch. It's worth noting that the MMI system (electronic brain) is unsealed and located below the tilted forward cup holders, so if you spill even a little liquid on the shifter, the MMI shorts out and it costs $1000 to fix. Audi claimed that it wasn't their design flaw, but I still think it's something to be aware of.

my first Audi. Car is nice enough to drive. First, because I consider it a safety issue, the headlights STINK!!! Even to the point that I looked into upgrading them myself, even though its a leased car. (I couldn't find a replacement for the Audi system). I wonder if whomever designed the driver/front passenger area ever actually sat in/used a car before? Less storage / small item cargo space than I have ever seen in a car. No place for a phone, the beverage holders are laughably small, there is a space in between the beverage holders that is purposed for the key fob that is COMPLETELY unnecessary and 1) means the cup holders are often not large enough and 2) prevents anyone from using that space to put their phone in. The small item cargo space under the arm rests is beyond cramped. There isn't even a place to hold a paid of sunglasses (except the glove compartment). The door side cargo space is small. The cargo area in the back is much smaller in usability than it appears. And, Audi, in its infinite wisdom, provided a tire jack but no dedicated place for it and not even a tie down - it's just a cordura bundle that rolls around in the cargo area. SERIOUSLY ??? WTF Audi. Car drives fine but the inconveniences are stupid beyond belief, especially when they could have easily been overcome.I can't wait until the lease is finished (not worth Swap a Lease to me) and be done with this car. I do not recommend for the $$$.

I have a 2017 q7 with 9000 miles on it and unfortunately, there is a horrible brake squeal. Audi USA is aware of the issue, but they have not yet found a solution. They have advised me to continue enjoying the car despite the noisy brakes. As a result, I feel embarrassed to drive my $70000 car. I hope Audi will find a solution soon. Despite this issue, I still appreciate the quality of Audi's products.

When considering the cost, it may be beneficial to explore other vehicle options. My personal experience with the 2022 model has been less than satisfactory. Despite having the car since December, I have had to return to the dealership multiple times due to issues with the technology panels. Unfortunately, the panels have not been functioning properly and I have spoken with five different representatives who have acknowledged the issue as a glitch that is currently being addressed. The technology has been a major inconvenience, as I am currently unable to access important features such as the radio, temperature control, garage door opener, and cameras. Additionally, the car has proven to be quite a gas guzzler, requiring refueling every couple of days at a cost of $100. In comparison, I found the 2019 Q5 to be of better quality.

Unfortunately, I am no longer a member of the Audi family. I owned my 2011 Audi Q7 for 6 years and for the most part it was alright. However, I did have some issues with maintenance. Despite having every service done at a Certified Audi Dealer, the thermostat went out just after the warranty had expired. Audi did not cover the repair, but they did offer to cover my service through 75,000 miles. Fast forward 2 1/2 years and my coolant light came on just 6 weeks after my 85,000 mile service. I took it back to Phil Long Audi here in Colorado Springs and was surprised to find that the thermostat needed to be replaced again, along with an additional 2K in suggested repairs. I contacted Audi of America and they offered me a 25% discount on the Thermostat repair only as a good will gesture. It's disappointing that they don't stand behind their product as long as there is a buck to be made. Despite how nice their cars are, I refuse to do business like that.
