Audi A4 2005 problems
The Audi A4 is a line of luxury compact executive cars produced since 1994 by the German car manufacturer Audi, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The A4 has been built in five generations and is based on the Volkswagen Group B platform. The first generation A4 succeeded the Audi 80. The automaker's internal numbering treats the A4 as a continuation of the Audi 80 lineage, with the initial A4 designated as the B5-series, followed by the B6, B7, B8, and the B9.
The B8 and B9 versions of the A4 are built on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform shared with several models and brands across the Volkswagen Group. The Audi A4 automobile layout consists of a front-engine design, with transaxle-type transmissions mounted at the rear of the engine. The cars are front-wheel drive, or on some models, "quattro" all-wheel drive. The A4 is available as a sedan and station wagon. Historically, the second (B6) and third generations (B7) of the A4 also included a convertible version. For the fourth generation (B8) and onwards, the convertible, along with a new coupé and 5-door liftback variant, was spun-off by Audi into a new nameplate called the Audi A5.
B5 (Typ 8D; 1994)
The first generation Audi A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) debuted in October 1994, with production starting November 1994 and European sales commencing in January 1995 for the 1995 model year. North American sales later began in September 1995 for the 1996 model year. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B5 (PL45) platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat (B5, Typ 3B). It had a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. Many variations of the A4 were also available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan; the Avant (estate/wagon) was introduced in November 1995 and went on sale in February 1996.
Development began in 1988, with the first design sketches being created later that year. By 1991, an exterior design by Imre Hasanic was chosen and frozen for November 1994 production by 1992. The interior design was later finalized in 1992, with pilot production commencing in the first half of 1994. Development concluded in the third quarter of 1994, preceding November 1994 start of production.
A wide range of engines were available in European markets, between 1.6 and 2.8 litres for petrol engines; and a 1.9-litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group's VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 bhp) or 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp). The 2.6 and 2.8-litre V6 engines which had been carried over from the old 80/90 proved popular, although in North America, the 2.8-litre engine was the only V6 that was available there until 1997. A 2.4-liter version was developed especially for the Thai market, where import duty jumped from 60 to 100 percent on cars of over 2,400 cc displacement.
The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8-litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged 1.8T version produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) torque. Moreover, a quattro GmbH special edition of the B5 1.8T was later available in Germany and Europe, for which the engine's power output was raised to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) and 235 N⋅m (173 lb⋅ft). Five-valve technology was also added to a reengineered V6 family of engines in 1997, starting with the 2.8-litre V6 30v, which now produced 193 PS (142 kW; 190 bhp), followed by a 2.4-litre V6 which was a downsize from the previous 2.6 litre, 150 hp (112 kW) engine, but with a power increase to 165 PS (121 kW; 163 bhp).
Audi also debuted their new tiptronic automatic transmission on the B5 platform, based on the unit Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter offering the driver a fully-automatic operation or manual selection of the gear ratios.
The B5 marked Audi's continued move into the midsize luxury car segment, having started this trajectory notably with later model years of the preceding Audi 80/90 B4. Despite initial mechanical problems, overall build and assembly quality were lauded both by the automotive press and within Audi and Volkswagen, and at the time, parent company Volkswagen declared the B5 the company-wide build quality benchmark for all its other models.

Common Audi A4 2005 problems
The 2005 Audi A4 is known for several common problems based on complaints from its owners. One of the most frequent issues is engine failure, which has been reported by many owners of the 2002 A4 redesign. This problem is often associated with a low or discharged battery, ignition switch failure, clogged fuel filters, emissions control faults, and catalytic converter failure. It is crucial to consult a licensed mechanic for a proper diagnosis before replacing any part, as engine failure can have multiple causes.
Another common problem with the 2005 Audi A4 is excessive oil consumption. This issue has been reported by many drivers, who noticed excessive vibration from their vehicles when braking due to little to no oil in the engine. The 2005 A4 is particularly susceptible to this problem, with several owners reporting that they had to top up on engine oil multiple times, but their vehicles continued to burn oil at an alarming rate.
The 2005 Audi A4 also has issues with the central locking system, which can fail and may not be fixed quickly by dealers. Additionally, some A4s have gloveboxes and dashboards that rattle or squeak, which can be exposed during a test drive.
Lastly, the 2005 Audi A4's 2.0-litre diesel models can burn oil over time, and some owners don't check the level, relying instead on the oil warning light. This is dangerous and could cause permanent engine damage. It is essential to consult the service book to find out when the oil was last changed and then check the dipstick to see if it's low.
In summary, the 2005 Audi A4 has several common problems, including engine failure, excessive oil consumption, issues with the central locking system, rattling or squeaking gloveboxes and dashboards, and burning oil in the 2.0-litre diesel models. AIR BAG HAD A RANDOM DEPLOYMENT WHEN I POPPED THE HOOD AND UNSCREWED THE PRESSURE ON THE RADIATOR FLUID. GOING TO NEED THIS VIN ADDED TO THE RECALL FOR AIRBAGS TO GET A NEW ONE.

- Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Audi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The interim owner letters were sent to owners in July 2016, and will be sent a second letter once parts are available. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-822-2834.
- Manufacturer: The Gates Corporation
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
- Summary: The Gates Corporation (Gates) is recalling certain aftermarket Tru-Flow Water Pumps, part number TFW 41127, sold at certain NAPA Auto Parts and/or installed by automotive service technicians after November 1, 2013 (and manufactured August 2013 through October 2013) that have a black-colored pulley/sprocket or do not have 'US9377' stamped on the water pump housing. These service replacement parts were sold for use in model year 1999-2005 Audi A4, 2000-2006 Audi TT, 1998-2005 Volkswagen Beetle, 1999-2006 Golf, 1999-2008 and 2011-2013 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2000-2005 Volkswagen Passat. In the affected water pumps, the pulley or sprocket that turns the timing belt may develop microfractures causing the timing belt to fail.
- Consequence: A failure of the timing belt may cause the engine to shut down, potentially increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: Gates will notify owners, and dealers will replace the water pump, free of charge. The recall began during May 2014. Owners may contact The Gates Corporation at 1-303-744-1911.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share with you my experience with my new car. It was delivered last week and I couldn't be happier! This car is truly amazing and makes my old Sebring seem like a thing of the past. The styling is fantastic and the ride is so comfortable. I've received so many compliments and looks from everyone. Audi really delivered on their promises and exceeded my expectations. This car makes me excited to get up in the morning and go for a drive. If you're looking for a classy car that will make you stand out from the crowd, this is the one for you. Even my father-in-law, who is the world's biggest car critic, had nothing but praise for it! The Lt. Silver metallic with black interior is a real head-turner. The V6 delivers exceptional power across all ranges and there are so many toys and comfort features. The interior quality is simply amazing!

We've had some issues with the coils, electrical system, and various gaskets in our car. Unfortunately, the engine light has been on constantly since we bought it. As people who put a lot of miles on our cars, we've found that Audi models may not be the best fit for our needs. However, we're grateful to have purchased an extended warranty and our local dealership repair shop has been fantastic to work with. While waiting for repairs isn't exactly our idea of a good time, we appreciate the great service we've received. Although we may not choose to buy another Audi in the future, we're glad to have had this experience with our dealership.

The quality of this car is amazing! I actually prefer the design of this model over the new 2.0 model. The acceleration is excellent. When I was considering the A4 and the TSX, I found that the TSX felt like a car for children, while the A4 felt like a car for professional adults. I ended up getting the 1.8 with FrontTrak, which seemed more peppy than with Quattro. Additionally, the FrontTrak model gets really good gas mileage. I get up to 39 mpg on Hwy 101 during rush hour traffic! I purchased my car from Rector Audit in Burlingame, and I must say that the sales staff was very professional and not like your typical car dealership. The projector headlights are fine - you don't need xenon. The standard stereo works great!

I've been really pleased with the performance of our new 2005 A4, which we bought in December 2004. It has a lot of power, a smooth transmission, and handles the road really well. The ride is quiet and very comfortable. Surprisingly, it's comparable to our BMW 330ci, but with the Quattro AWD, it's much more practical in the snow!

Hi there! I'm glad to hear that you're interested in this car. It's a great choice - not only is it a convertible with great gas mileage, but it's also fun to drive and absolutely gorgeous. If you're thinking about buying one, I would definitely recommend making sure it comes with a warranty. These cars can be expensive to fix if something goes wrong, and having a warranty will give you peace of mind. Unfortunately, my 05 A4 recently had a transmission problem, which was unexpected. I never thought I would have any issues with the transmission, but luckily I was still under warranty at the time. If you do decide to purchase this car, I highly recommend getting a warranty to protect yourself. Overall, though, it's a fantastic car and I'm sure you'll love it!

After driving for 2 years, I've had the opportunity to reflect on my experience. While the Audi A4 is considered an entry-level luxury car, I personally would not recommend it. Although it has some luxurious features, the build quality is questionable. If you're looking for a quality product, I would suggest considering Japanese offerings instead. In my experience, Audi's service centers are not the most reliable, with my car requiring 14 repairs in just 2 years of ownership. While there are some benefits to owning an Audi, I would prefer to drive my own car on a daily basis rather than relying on a rental.

I have had two 2005 cars of this model, but unfortunately, both of them have had issues. The first one had a noticeable noise that even caught the attention of people in the lane next to me. Despite no help from Audi, the dealer provided me with a new car for an additional $1,500. However, the new car had the check engine light appear in under 300 miles. Although the shop had it for 5 days and delivered it, the engine light reappeared. My service shop has put more miles on the car delivering it to me than I have put on the car driving it. As a result, I have decided to return the car tomorrow. While Audi has not stood behind their auto, I hope your dealer will be more helpful. Please keep in mind the risks before making a purchase.

Why did the fuel pump go bad after only 120,000 miles? The Acura we drive has 160,000 and the fuel pump is fine. It's going to cost $700 to replace it, plus $125 for the tow. I know it could be worse, but I think the reliability could be better. If you're doing all the required maintenance perfectly, nothing should break.
