Audi A4 problems

The Audi A4 is a line of luxury compact executive cars produced since 1994 by the German car manufacturer Audi, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The A4 has been built in five generations and is based on the Volkswagen Group B platform. The first generation A4 succeeded the Audi 80. The automaker's internal numbering treats the A4 as a continuation of the Audi 80 lineage, with the initial A4 designated as the B5-series, followed by the B6, B7, B8, and the B9.
The B8 and B9 versions of the A4 are built on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform shared with several models and brands across the Volkswagen Group. The Audi A4 automobile layout consists of a front-engine design, with transaxle-type transmissions mounted at the rear of the engine. The cars are front-wheel drive, or on some models, "quattro" all-wheel drive. The A4 is available as a sedan and station wagon. Historically, the second (B6) and third generations (B7) of the A4 also included a convertible version. For the fourth generation (B8) and onwards, the convertible, along with a new coupé and 5-door liftback variant, was spun-off by Audi into a new nameplate called the Audi A5.
B5 (Typ 8D; 1994)
The first generation Audi A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) debuted in October 1994, with production starting November 1994 and European sales commencing in January 1995 for the 1995 model year. North American sales later began in September 1995 for the 1996 model year. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B5 (PL45) platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat (B5, Typ 3B). It had a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. Many variations of the A4 were also available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan; the Avant (estate/wagon) was introduced in November 1995 and went on sale in February 1996.
Development began in 1988, with the first design sketches being created later that year. By 1991, an exterior design by Imre Hasanic was chosen and frozen for November 1994 production by 1992. The interior design was later finalized in 1992, with pilot production commencing in the first half of 1994. Development concluded in the third quarter of 1994, preceding November 1994 start of production.
A wide range of engines were available in European markets, between 1.6 and 2.8 litres for petrol engines; and a 1.9-litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group's VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 bhp) or 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp). The 2.6 and 2.8-litre V6 engines which had been carried over from the old 80/90 proved popular, although in North America, the 2.8-litre engine was the only V6 that was available there until 1997. A 2.4-liter version was developed especially for the Thai market, where import duty jumped from 60 to 100 percent on cars of over 2,400 cc displacement.
The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8-litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged 1.8T version produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) torque. Moreover, a quattro GmbH special edition of the B5 1.8T was later available in Germany and Europe, for which the engine's power output was raised to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) and 235 N⋅m (173 lb⋅ft). Five-valve technology was also added to a reengineered V6 family of engines in 1997, starting with the 2.8-litre V6 30v, which now produced 193 PS (142 kW; 190 bhp), followed by a 2.4-litre V6 which was a downsize from the previous 2.6 litre, 150 hp (112 kW) engine, but with a power increase to 165 PS (121 kW; 163 bhp).
Audi also debuted their new tiptronic automatic transmission on the B5 platform, based on the unit Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter offering the driver a fully-automatic operation or manual selection of the gear ratios.
The B5 marked Audi's continued move into the midsize luxury car segment, having started this trajectory notably with later model years of the preceding Audi 80/90 B4. Despite initial mechanical problems, overall build and assembly quality were lauded both by the automotive press and within Audi and Volkswagen, and at the time, parent company Volkswagen declared the B5 the company-wide build quality benchmark for all its other models.

- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-27
- Date Complaint: 2024-01-15
- VIN: WAUEAAF44RN
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,ENGINE
- Summary: I purchased a 2024 Audi A4 with 20 miles as a birthday present for my son on 12/20/2023 for $45,028.81 cash, plus traded my son’s 2012 BMW 328i with 22,000 miles and they applied $8,500.00 credit. This is an Atlanta, Georgia Audi dealership. My son drove the car for one week and his salesman had an appointment set for him to bring his car back one week later to add Audi Connect Software to vehicle and my son’s phone. We took his car back to the dealership and they added the software and we left. My son told me several lights starting turning on in his dashboard but he could not take the car back that day because the dealership had closed as we were leaving the dealership. I called the salesman the next morning and he said to bring car back and they would check it. My son could not bring it back until 10 days later on [XXX], because he was sick in bed. His apartment is about 20 mins from the dealership so when he returned his car had 100 miles from only driving the vehicle to and from the dealership those four trips. Oscar in service dept said he needed to leave the car over weekend and they would check it Tuesday [XXX] since that was a holiday weekend, and Oscar gave [XXX] a loan car. Oscar texted my son on [XXX] saying his car had a defective air bag module and that module was causing all the trouble lights to appear on his dashboard, and they could not fix it until 30 days because they had to order part from Sweden. Oscar also said they had to keep the vehicle and it could not be driven until that part was fixed because of all the trouble lights in dash and he wanted to make sure the car would be ok when my son starts to drive it again. I don’t like the fact that the dealer has my son’s car we traded in and they have my full payment of the remaining balance after my trade in was applied to balance of car. Is this car a lemon and is it normal to buy a car only to have dealer keep it one week after Audi Connect software was downloaded? On 12/8/23, my daughter was involved in a serious front-end collation with another vehicle. The airbags in the Audi did not deploy. The other vehicle (which sustained less damage) did deploy. Without the airbags, her face hit the steering wheel, causing a large laceration to her eyelid and significant bruising and swelling to her face.

- Summary: This audi doesn’t have a dip stick that comes with the car. It burns 1-2 quarts of oil a month and doesn’t indicate when your car is low on oil. It’s a guessing game when the engine says put a quart of oil in and I needed 2 and a half quarts to be full. It’s such a saftey hazard I’m surprised audi hasn’t recalled this engine. I spent over $1000 to have everything resealed and fixed because it just ceased one day due to not having enough oil

- Summary: My Audi A4 failed to start on the coldest day of the year when my daughter was out doing errands and left it for an extended time parked outside. When she returned and tried to start the car, she got an error message: "Steering defective! Do not drive vehicle!" She re-tried over a dozen times, leaving the vehicle and returning to try again....to no avail. It was extremely cold so she retreated into the building and searched the internet and found others who had had this same problem. She finally called a friend who came to pick her up and take her home. I called Audi, and they confirmed that it's a know problem that occurs in extreme cold and there's no way to get it started until things warm up. We waited until later in the day before my son and I drove over and successfully got the car started. Luckily my daughter could get warm refuge in a nearby building. But it is easy to imagine other circumstances, say, someone who lives in the country who stops at the side of the road for whatever reason and might freeze because the car won't start. Although Audi has known about the problem, they have chosen not to issue a recall but instead an extended warranty that had expired a month or so before this incident. Surprisingly, they refuse to fix the problem because it is beyond that extension date even though we brought the car to the dealer and they confirmed the error was recorded 18 times which might match my daughter's desperate but failed attempts to start the car. This is not an optional fix. It is a danger that should be addressed by recall. This is the first time we had this problem or even knew to be concerned. Furthermore, the notice for extended warranty (see attached) was not even addressed to me but, instead, to my teenage son who clearly didn't understand how important it was to get it fixed.

Best car you've ever owned, hands down. You are a 3 time A4 owner and love the significant improvements they've made in the 2018. The Sport Package and Black Optics set off the look and the front sport seats grip your body in spirited driving. It's a dynamic blend of performance and luxury. You would 100% buy it again.

Vehicle year: 2006
This car is so much fun to drive! It handles really well and has a great interior/exterior fit and finish. The seats are firm yet comfortable, and the controls and instruments are super easy to read and use. The only thing to note is that the performance can be a bit unresponsive when first starting up from a stop while in Drive.

I absolutely love my car! Every day, I discover something new to appreciate about it. The interior is stunning, and the convertible top is a true marvel. The engine runs smoothly, although it can be a bit noisy at times. The 6-speed auto transmission is incredibly refined, making for a truly enjoyable driving experience. While the gas mileage could be better, I understand that it's a necessary compromise to have Quattro. I opted for every available option, and I believe that's what makes this car such a marvel. There's nothing left to do but drive and enjoy!

Vehicle year: 2011
I'm so excited to share my experience with the Audi A4! I opted for the Prestige package with the S Line option, and I have to say, it's an amazing car! If you're worried about the V4 engine and performance, don't be! The engine is phenomenal and with all the torque it puts out, this car has more than enough power to make driving a joy. Plus, let's be real, when do you ever get to go 0-60 on city streets during rush hour? I love this car so much that I find myself waking up at 4 a.m. just to take it out for an early morning drive before work!

Vehicle year: 2015
This is my 3rd installment of reviews of my 2014 Audi A4 Premium Plus. I am excited to share my experience with the Stage 1 ECU upgrade from APR (goapr.com) that I installed in July of 2017 with 88,800 miles on the car. The power improvement is immediately noticeable, and it's addictive! Once you get used to the improved performance, it's hard to go back to the stock configuration. To be cautious, I do revert to 'normal' engine mode every so often. The 'chip' has 4 modes: 93 Octane; 91 Octane; Valet [which restricts speed to 30 MPH] and Normal or Stock. My fuel efficiency has decreased as expected, but it actually improves when I run on cruise control for long distances. I cannot accurately note the loss of efficiency because I went from Pirelli P7 Cinturato Low Rolling Resistance tires to Michelins Pilot Sport A/S 3+. Despite the decrease in fuel efficiency, I still love this car! A friend of mine, who happens to be an executive with Enterprise Holdings and is always driving the latest and greatest that the company has to offer, got in and said, Performance remains consistent, very much the same as when I first began driving the car. I do my own oil changes at 5K mile intervals. I did notice that the HVAC unit seemed to blow cold air when I wanted heat, but I mentioned this when I had the car serviced. The technician assured me that all was as it should be. At my last service, there was an update to the programming of the HVAC unit addressing the issue that I had identified earlier. The dual-zone climate control now works as prescribed. We looked at the new A4, but in terms of styling, it seems dull compared to the 2014 (B8). Tires and wheels have been an issue as I never anticipated a need for a wheel and tire warranty, having never had a blowout or wheel damage. With the 18And I'm still in love with my A4. Nothing much has changed at all. I'm happy to report that I have had no issues with the mechanics of the car and she still turns heads and gets the occasional envious glance, if not an outright thumbs up. I recently purchased a new set of Michelins instead of the OEM Pirelli's, which featured low rolling resistance. I did notice a slight increase in fuel consumption of about 2 or 3 MPG, but the Michelins feel softer and offer more feedback, while providing about the same grip.

I purchased this car on November 8, 2011, and since then, I have driven it for only 4015 miles (as of February 10, 2012 when it was towed to the dealer). Unfortunately, starting at about 1000 miles, the engine has been making a serious noise when first started in the mornings. To an untrained ear, it sounds like a bad bearing noise emanating from something at the front of the engine. I have taken the car to the dealer service twice for a cumulative 9 days, but the techs and service advisor have listened to audio recordings of the noise and report that they cannot duplicate the problem, hence they cannot fix it. I have found several YouTube postings by A4 owners with the same problem. The dealer says that it's normal, yet it did not make the noise for the first 1000 miles.

I had a few issues with my Audi A4, including excessive oil consumption and a timing chain defect, which resulted in over $10,000 in repairs. Although Audi did not cover the timing chain issue due to mileage, I believe it may be related to the oil consumption defect and rebuild. Unfortunately, my dealer and AoA were unable to assist me. Overall, my experience with Audi has not been positive and I cannot recommend their product.

I purchased this car brand new in 2013 and unfortunately, I have experienced several issues since then. The car is a low profile car and living in New England, I went through 6 Pirelli tires before I finally put all weather continental tires on the car. Although the car does not drive as smoothly now, I have not experienced any bubbles in the tires or cracked any rims since purchasing the continentals. There have been multiple recalls for the heating system, air bags, electronic, etc. that have required repairs. The check engine light came on around 30,000 miles and required multiple valves to be replaced. The dealership claimed they were

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car that I bought for my kid. It had 121k miles on it, which I thought wasn't too bad based on the reviews I read. Unfortunately, it ended up needing some repairs within the first two weeks of owning it. Over the next four months, I ended up spending over three grand on repairs and it seems like every time I fix one thing, something else breaks. I'm starting to think about taking it to auction, but I wanted to share my experience with you first.

Hey there! After owning my 12 A4 Premium Quattro with convenience package and heated seats for 1.5 years and driving 24k miles, I wanted to share my thoughts with you. While I do think the ride quality is decent, I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed that some features that are standard on a TSX, such as xenon headlamps and memory seats, are only available as options on the A4. Additionally, I find the MMI system to be a bit of a pain to use - it just doesn't seem to make sense to me! However, I have to say that the interior is really nice and comfortable. While I don't get the best gas mileage (barely 300 with a mix of city and highway driving), I still think it's a great car overall. Thanks for listening to my review!
