Audi A4 1998 problems
The Audi A4 is a line of luxury compact executive cars produced since 1994 by the German car manufacturer Audi, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The A4 has been built in five generations and is based on the Volkswagen Group B platform. The first generation A4 succeeded the Audi 80. The automaker's internal numbering treats the A4 as a continuation of the Audi 80 lineage, with the initial A4 designated as the B5-series, followed by the B6, B7, B8, and the B9.
The B8 and B9 versions of the A4 are built on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform shared with several models and brands across the Volkswagen Group. The Audi A4 automobile layout consists of a front-engine design, with transaxle-type transmissions mounted at the rear of the engine. The cars are front-wheel drive, or on some models, "quattro" all-wheel drive. The A4 is available as a sedan and station wagon. Historically, the second (B6) and third generations (B7) of the A4 also included a convertible version. For the fourth generation (B8) and onwards, the convertible, along with a new coupé and 5-door liftback variant, was spun-off by Audi into a new nameplate called the Audi A5.
B5 (Typ 8D; 1994)
The first generation Audi A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) debuted in October 1994, with production starting November 1994 and European sales commencing in January 1995 for the 1995 model year. North American sales later began in September 1995 for the 1996 model year. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B5 (PL45) platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat (B5, Typ 3B). It had a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. Many variations of the A4 were also available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan; the Avant (estate/wagon) was introduced in November 1995 and went on sale in February 1996.
Development began in 1988, with the first design sketches being created later that year. By 1991, an exterior design by Imre Hasanic was chosen and frozen for November 1994 production by 1992. The interior design was later finalized in 1992, with pilot production commencing in the first half of 1994. Development concluded in the third quarter of 1994, preceding November 1994 start of production.
A wide range of engines were available in European markets, between 1.6 and 2.8 litres for petrol engines; and a 1.9-litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group's VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 bhp) or 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp). The 2.6 and 2.8-litre V6 engines which had been carried over from the old 80/90 proved popular, although in North America, the 2.8-litre engine was the only V6 that was available there until 1997. A 2.4-liter version was developed especially for the Thai market, where import duty jumped from 60 to 100 percent on cars of over 2,400 cc displacement.
The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8-litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged 1.8T version produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) torque. Moreover, a quattro GmbH special edition of the B5 1.8T was later available in Germany and Europe, for which the engine's power output was raised to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) and 235 N⋅m (173 lb⋅ft). Five-valve technology was also added to a reengineered V6 family of engines in 1997, starting with the 2.8-litre V6 30v, which now produced 193 PS (142 kW; 190 bhp), followed by a 2.4-litre V6 which was a downsize from the previous 2.6 litre, 150 hp (112 kW) engine, but with a power increase to 165 PS (121 kW; 163 bhp).
Audi also debuted their new tiptronic automatic transmission on the B5 platform, based on the unit Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter offering the driver a fully-automatic operation or manual selection of the gear ratios.
The B5 marked Audi's continued move into the midsize luxury car segment, having started this trajectory notably with later model years of the preceding Audi 80/90 B4. Despite initial mechanical problems, overall build and assembly quality were lauded both by the automotive press and within Audi and Volkswagen, and at the time, parent company Volkswagen declared the B5 the company-wide build quality benchmark for all its other models.

- Summary: I HAVE HAD A RECENT DISCUSSION WITH AUDI CUSTOMER SERVICE MANAGER IN WAYZATA, MN AT 11:55AM. THIS IS REGARDING A DEFECT IN MY MODEL YEAR 1998 AUDI A4 2.8., OR AUDI A4 2.8 MANUFACTURED JUNE OF 1997. I RESEARCHED THE WEB AND SAW HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE LIGHT SWITCH. I TURNED MY LIGHT SWITCH ON AND THE LOW BEAM AND HIGH BEAM DO NOT WORK. THE TEMPORARY HIGH BEAM WORKS. I SAW MANY OTHER 1998 AUDI OWNERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM; EVEN MORE SIMILAR WITH THE FACT THAT WE HAD A 1998 MODEL YEAR CAR THAT WAS MANUFACTURED IN 1997. THE RECALL CAMPAIGN IS A LITTLE AMBIGUOUS STATING MODEL YEARS AND MANUFACTURE DATES. MY CAR FALLS WITHIN THE MANUFACTURE DATE BUT NOT THE RECALL DATE. THE RECALL IS OPEN HOWEVER 1998 MODELS, WHICH ARE BEING AFFECTED BY THIS ISSUE, ARE NOT INCLUDED. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT CARS MANUFACTURED PRIOR TO AUGUST OF 1997 EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE MODEL YEAR 1998 HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR

- Summary: ON A 1998 A4 QUATTRO AUDI, IT IS THE 2ND TIME THAT THE HEADLIGHTS SWITCH FAILS, THE FIRST TIME WAS 6 MONTHS AGO AND HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE STEERING WHEEL COLUMN SWITCH PACKAGE. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME, AND THIS TIME I WAS ON A HIGHWAY AROUND 11:00 PM WITH NO HEADLIGHTS AT ALL, IN THIS CAR IF THE HEADLIGHTS DON'T WORK, ALSO THE FOG LIGHTS DON'T WORK TOO, SO SUDDENLY YOU END AT THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT ON A HIGHWAY WITH NO LIGHTS AT ALL. THIS DEFINITELY IS A HIGH RISK SITUATION BECAUSE YOU CAN NOT DRIVE WITH OUT HEADLIGHTS IT IS LIKE BLIND DRIVING. I BEEN SEARCHING ON THE WEB AND IT LOOKS LIKE A VERY COMMON FAILURE ON THIS CAR BUT THERE IS NO RECALL AT ALL FOR THIS YET. *KB
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

AT THE SLIGHTEST PEDAL PRESSURE, ALL 4 WHEELS WILL HAVE A STRONG PULSATING, GIVING YOU ABOUT 1/3 OF THE BRAKING PRESSURE THAT IS NEEDED. VOLKSWAGENS USED A NEARLY IDENTICAL PART, AND THEIR ABS CONTROLLER IS UNDER RECALL, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY NHTSA, CANNOT FORCE AUDI OF AMERICA TO DO THE SAME. THANK YOU *TR

- VIN: WAUED68D0WA
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,EQUIPMENT
- Summary: THE ABS CONTROL UNIT ON MY AUDI A4 FAILED AFTER 95,000 MILES. I HAVE NO ANTI-LOCK BRAKING AND AUDI HAS DENIED ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE PART SINCE IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY. SEARCHING THROUGH AUDI FORUMS I FOUND THIS FAILURE TO BE VERY COMMON AND EVERYONE HAD NO ABS UNTIL THE CONTROL UNIT WAS REPLACED WHICH COST AN AVERAGE OF $1500+. THERE WERE NO EVENTS THAT LEAD UP TO THE FAILURE, I STARTED THE CAR ONE DAY AND THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT STARTED FLASHING ON MY DASH. I TESTED THE ABS AND FOUND THAT IT INDEED DOES NOT PREVENT MY BRAKES FROM LOCKING UP. NEARLY THREE YEARS LATER, THE PART HAS NOT BEEN FIXED DUE TO THE HIGH COST TO REPAIR IT.

Audi A4 1998 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the Audi A4 1998.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Audi) is recalling certain 1998 Audi A8 and 1997-1998 Audi A4 vehicles equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) that do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflator may absorb moisture, causing the inflator to explode or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
- Consequence: The inflator could explode during air bag deployment, resulting in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the driver's air bag inflator with an alternative inflator of a different design, free of charge. Owner notification letters were sent September 21, 2021. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Audi's number for this recall is 69BT. The vehicles in this recall were mistakenly omitted from recall 20V-056. All vehicle owners have already been notified by mail and informed that the remedy is available.

During the warranty period, my A4 had a few minor issues such as the windshield wiper pump, seatbelt case, and trip odometer panel going dim (twice). However, all of these were promptly repaired or replaced under warranty. Since the warranty expired, the only issues that have arisen were a direct result of abuse (usually by car wash attendants) or normal wear and tear (such as the brake pads needing replacement). Even after 4 years, the car still runs and sounds like the day I drove it off the lot.

This car has been the best I've EVER owned! I must say, the A4 has held up much better than my wife's Lexus with lower mileage. I drive along a twisty road by a river in Vermont, and this car shines on it! I've had to replace a few parts, like the lower control arms and one wheel bearing, as well as the T.belt kit and W/pump, but that's just regular maintenance. I always use Mobil One oil with Audi filters, and it runs like a dream. Even in the snow and ice, few cars can keep up with the Audi's low end power. I admit, I added a mild chip to bump the HP to just over 200HP, and it's been a great decision. The 1.8t engine keeps a good balance over the heavy 2.8, making it a joy to drive!

Congratulations on your first Audi! I'm glad to hear that you're impressed with its technology and quality, especially its state-of-the-art AWD System (Quattro). The car handles extremely well under all road conditions and is definitely a solid choice. The Tiptronic Transmission is another impressive feature that sets this car apart from other upscale sports sedans, with its ability to shift either manually or use the automatic feature. While the car is a quality automobile, it's worth noting that it may have some electrical reliability problems that are typical in most cars that offer a wide variety of power options.

It's great to hear that you're considering this vehicle! At its price point, it's truly incredible. The AWD is hard to beat in tough weather conditions, and the V6 is incredibly smooth. Even with the refreshing the line received in 2002, the styling is still up to date. It's worth noting that the new A4 looks like the A6.

I love my car, but it has caused me a lot of headaches and cost me thousands of dollars to keep it running. Unfortunately, I have had to replace several major parts in the engine that should have lasted the lifetime of the vehicle. I was hoping for a more reliable machine from Audi, but this one has not met my expectations.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We're sorry to hear that you've had some issues with your Audi, despite taking good care of it. It sounds like you've had to replace a few parts, including the drivers window motor, airbag sensor, and rear differential, all while the car was still under warranty. Now, you've discovered that the cam seals and cam adjusters need to be replaced, which is definitely frustrating. We understand that this has been a major inconvenience for you. We appreciate your feedback and will take it into consideration. If there's anything we can do to help, please let us know. Thank you for choosing Audi and we hope to have the opportunity to serve you again in the future!

I have been dreaming about owning an A4 for years. When I finally got it, I was so happy and relieved that my car was covered. Audi even paid for the rear differential, clutch, faulty suspension, and brake recall. I was hoping that the car would hold up after the warranty expired. However, I have had to replace the timing belt twice in just 30k miles, as well as the tensioner, water pump, oil cooler, and now there is a ball bearing problem. In my opinion, A4s are overrated. Unfortunately, dealers have a monopoly on servicing Audis, so you can't change your motor oil without going to the dealer. I wish Audi would be more willing to assist their customers.

I strongly advise against purchasing this vehicle due to its exorbitant maintenance costs. The first gear of the manual transmission is faulty and the catalytic converter has already been replaced. Additionally, there is a recurring issue with oil leakage, even after it was previously fixed.

I had some issues with this car. Within a year of owning it, I had to spend over $7000 on repairs. As a result, I ended up driving my 1995 Dakota more often since it was more reliable. It's important to replace the timing belts early, especially for a 2.8 car, as they won't last until the recommended service interval. If the belt goes, it could cost you thousands. Replacing the belt at around 50,000 miles is a good idea and will save you a lot of trouble. Even after all the repairs, the car still hasn't been running well. Unfortunately, it takes a long time to get these repairs done at any of the dealerships for an A4.

My car was in great condition until my servicing dealership performed unauthorized work on it. Despite my frustration, I remained confident in my ability to resolve the issue. While Audi customer service initially claimed they could not help, I persisted and eventually found a solution. Although the dealership did not perform the service correctly and it took multiple visits to fix the issue, I remained assertive and ensured that my car was returned to its original condition. Overall, I am confident in my ability to handle any issues that may arise with my vehicle in the future.
