Common Audi Q5 problems

The Audi Q5, a popular compact luxury SUV, has had its fair share of common problems reported by owners over the years. Here are some of the most significant issues, based on the search results:

  • Excessive oil consumption: The 2011 Q5, along with other Audi models with turbocharged engines, faced problems with excessive oil consumption. A lawsuit was filed against Audi for this issue, but the company settled without admitting fault.
  • Defects in the Start-Stop system: The 2017-2020 Q5 models have experienced problems with the vehicle's Start-Stop system, leading to issues like delayed acceleration response and power steering and brake shut-offs, making the car dangerous to drive.
  • Leaking fuel pump flanges: The fuel pump flange supplied to Audi developed hairline cracks, leading to small leaks. This issue posed a risk of fire due to flammable liquid coming into contact with internal components.
  • Automatic transmission failure: The 2009-2010 and 2012 Audi Q5 models have experienced issues with automatic transmission failure, including problems like sudden transmission lockup, rough shifting, and complete transmission breakdown, requiring expensive repairs or replacements.
  • Sunroof leaks and failures: Sunroof leaks and operational failures have been reported in the 2009-2017 models, often due to faulty seals or drainage issues, leading to water ingress and potential damage to the interior and electronic components.
  • Faulty steering: The 2014-2017 Audi Q5 models have had issues with stiff steering and unusual noises during low-speed maneuvers or while the vehicle is stationary.
  • Electrical issues: The 2009-2016 models have faced a range of electrical problems, affecting everything from dashboard warning lights and exterior lighting to the infotainment system and electronic rearview.
  • Suspension woes: The 2009-2012 models have faced suspension-related complaints, with most owner-reported issues centering around airbag and seatbelt problems, fuel system issues, and automatic gearbox failures.

  • Summary: My truck was part of a recall regarding my water pump and coolant leaking. I went for service at the Naperville Audi dealership and they basically gave me the run around and didn’t honor the recall lied and said they replaced my thermostat and never did. I had my car towed twice on 10/22 basically left stranded. Audi corporate advised them to fix my car due to the recall and they failed to do so.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-19
  • VIN: WA1LFAFP3FA
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Recently purchased a used vehicle from this dealership that there is a major issue with the drive train including the cv axel and also an issue with the tires that are on the vehicle. One of the tires had gone flat so I took it to the local Les Schwab to have it inspected and was told that I could not repaired it and that they could not sell me and put on the one tire because the vehicle manufacturer size was not met and that it can cause a danger on my 2015 Audi Q5 premium plus. The tire size that was on the vehicle that was purchased is 255/35ZR19, the manufacturers size is 235/55R19 per the les Schwab it can damage the vehicle and decrease the performance of the function of the vehicle which also impacts the speedometer reading and also the mileage tracking adding additional strain on the vehicle as well as decreasing its value faster. The vehicle is an all-wheel drive car and have the incorrect size is a safety concern as well as increasing the amount of mile that are driven that are artificial, also messing with the speedometer reading to have to go 10 mile over the limit to make it go the correct speed, this makes the computer think the vehicle is driving more mile than it is. I have informed the dealer of the issues, and they have refused to help and state that there is nothing to be concerned about. This information was not disclosed to me when purchasing the vehicle.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-17
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-15
  • VIN: WA1LFAFP9DA
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The rear subframe has plastic "stone guards" to protect the frame from being damaged in off-road conditions. Where these stone guards are attached, the subframe has rotted/rusted large holes. Water and salt from winter seasons can get trapped behind these guards. A subframe on a vehicle at this age should NOT have complete holes rotted through. Let alone a vehicle brand such as Audi, known for quality. The rear subframe connects the rear suspension and AWD drivetrain to the unibody of the vehicle. This is a major safety concern. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer; my Audi dealer denied this could happen. I am part of a few Audi groups/forums with others facing the same issues, and Audi replacing the subframe under the corrosion warranty. This is a widespread issue amongst the forums. There are no warnings or symptoms as of yet. I noticed the holes 3/17/24. The vehicle has been somewhat sufficient to operate. I just don't want to be traveling down the road with my family in the vehicle if the subframe collapses. I am afraid to fully remove the stone guards as others on the forums claimed that Audi would do nothing for them after removing the guards. Being that they are "protection".

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-13
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-23
  • VIN: WA1BNAFY3J2
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: On 06/13/24, milage 61023, I experienced a failure in Left Tail Light. There was no damage to the housing unit, ie a crack in the lighting unit, but I was advised that the entire housing unit needed to be replaced as there was water in the housing unit that corroded the light socket for the led light. The repair was $470.00 for parts and $100 in labor subtotal $570.00 before tax and a dealer discount of $57. 03 total $541.51. I was shocked that it was over $500 to replace a brake light. Then 09/12/24, milage 63515, (3) months and 2,492 miles later I experienced a failure in the Right Tail Light. Again, there was no damage to the housing unit and I was advised that the entire housing unit needed to be replaced as there was water in the housing unit that corroded the light socket for the led light. This repair was provided to me with a dealer discount to the price after tax $481.59. When I asked if this was a recall item I was told no it is not. I asked if there was after-market replacement part as this seems to be a product defect I was told no there are no after-market parts available. I was told that these parts are kept in stock as this is a know issue for all Audi's with the tail brake lights close to the bumper. This is a safety issue as you can not drive the car with a defective brake light. I called Audi USA and reported my complaint and asked for some compensation but more importantly wanted to document this safety issue and after review was offered $200 off future repairs at my local dealer. This is safety issue and there is no reason to pay $1,023.10 for required brake lights repair due to housing unit that does not keep moisture out.

  • Summary: The comfort control module in the trunk of the car was sitting in water due to an ingress of water coming in the car. The car would not start due to this water ingress and could have shut off completely on the freeway or while driving. This caused my car to completely shut off and malfunction. There were no warning lamps or messages of the problem. I found out about the problem by taking the car to the Audi dealership. They originally thought the problem was the gateway module which has already been recalled due to the same problem of an ingress of water. The Audi dealership has claimed that the ingress of water is from a clogged drain pipe in the sunroof. They said there is nothing you can do to prevent this from happening.

The sensor failed due to poor design, metal-to-metal ball and socket linkage in a corrosion-assured location under the car. When the metal-to-metal ball and socket corroded and froze, resulting load caused the sensor linkage to break. A search of Audi forums indicates that this problem is not uncommon, and this same sensor design is used in other Audi models and variants.

  • Summary: My dealer informed me during a routine inspection that the rear coils springs were about to break and needed replacement at only 66653 miles. Web search revealed many others who have actually failed. Manufacturer will not cover 'out of warranty' repair. As a mechanical engineer with 45 years in the light vehicle industry - 30 in safety - I can say that coil springs do not routinely fail, especially at this mileage. If the do fail at speed I'd certainly expect potential loss of control by the surprised diver.

  • Remedy: Owners are advised not to use the 220V/240V compact/portable charging cable and only use the 110V home charging cable or public charging stations. Dealers will supply a new 220V/240V compact/portable charging cable with an incorporated temperature sensor, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 28, 2024. Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share an update with you. Unfortunately, my car broke down last Thursday while I was driving on 22nd. I traded my Benz for a 22 Q5 on September 1st, but now the dealer has told me that it will take 2-3 months for a new engine to arrive. To make matters worse, the dealership is in Delaware and I live in NY, so I'm currently without transportation. Do you have any suggestions or advice? Thanks for your help!

I purchased the car with only 2000 miles on it and it drove like a charm at first. Unfortunately, within just 2 months, the front grille peeled and required replacement. Then, three months later, I needed another grille due to peeling. After my second repair visit, I noticed shuddering and bucking with acceleration on inclines. I took the car in and was told that I needed a new fuel injector, even though the car had less than 15000 miles. The injector was replaced, but unfortunately, the problem started again before I could even get home from the dealer. After an examination, I was told that it was fuel-related and that I should try different stations. Despite trying every station in my city for a month, the problem still existed, so I took the car back to the dealer for a closer look. After several days of examination, the car was diagnosed with severe carbon build-up in the engine. It's a real shame that such a nice car has had so many issues. Unfortunately, I have decided that I am done with Audi.

On Wednesday, August 4, 2021, my 2021 Audi Q5 with only 1400 miles experienced a complete malfunction while I was driving. Despite the alarming situation, I was able to safely steer the Q5 off the road. The next day, I had the car towed to Audi and was informed that the gateway had gotten wet, which caused the issue. The part needed to fix the problem will cost $1200 and will take two weeks to arrive. Although the dealership has no openings until October, I am confident that the issue will be resolved in a timely manner. While I am unsure why the warranty will not cover the issue, I trust that Audi is acting in good faith and will provide a satisfactory resolution. I appreciate Audi's commitment to safety and encourage them to continue to prioritize it. Once my Q5 is repaired, I will consider trading it in. Overall, I had a rare experience, and I hope that no one else has to go through it. Thank you, Audi, for your attention to this matter.Audi, it is imperative that you recall the Q5 immediately due to safety concerns. Please relocate the gateway to a secure location that is inaccessible to water bottle caps. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

While driving home from vacation, my Audi broke down with 80,000 miles on the clock and requires a new motor at a cost of $12,000. Despite my disappointment, I am confident in my decision to purchase an Audi and believe that this is an isolated incident. I will be reaching out to Audi Corporate to discuss my options and resolve this issue. I encourage anyone considering an Audi to do their research and make an informed decision based on their own needs and experiences.

My partner and I had the pleasure of test driving both the 3.2 and 2.0T models, and we ultimately decided on the 2.0T. This engine provides more torque than the V-6, which translates to better power delivery to the wheels. The 2.0T also felt more nimble, and the 8-speed transmission made driving this vehicle an absolute joy. Currently, we are averaging 22 mpg during combined driving. We also considered the Mercedes GLK and Acura RSX, but neither of these vehicles came close to matching the interior comfort features of the model we chose.

I ordered the Prestige Plus package to get the more comfortable front seats and adaptive cruise control, which were important options for me due to the many hours I spend highway driving. There is a lot to know about this vehicle, but on the positive side, the handling and acceleration are impressive for an SUV. The 20-inch rims are attractive and do not seem to add any ride harshness. The ride is ultra-smooth, quiet, and serene, making long trips a pleasure. I have found that strict highway driving at 75-80mph yields 29mpg, while around town I get 20mpg on premium fuel. The interior is elegant, as is typical of all Audi's, and the virtual dashboard is amazing. Along with the heads-up display, it aids in keeping the driver's eyes on the road. The adaptive cruise control works smoothly and effortlessly, although the location of the controls is awkward to access and use if you are not totally familiar with this vehicle. The lane-keeping assist is a weak system that only works when there are perfectly striped roads, and the accident avoidance emergency braking is overly sensitive. This system is disappointing, considering other high-end manufacturers are close to semi-autonomous driving. Some niggling issues are the slow response from the transmission when shifting into reverse and attempting to do a quick maneuver, such as a three-point turn. Apple CarPlay works well, but I have lost some of the Spotify features found on my BMW interface, such as saving a favorite song to my playlist. The TPMS only tells you when there is a problem but does not show actual tire pressure, and the back-up camera iris cannot be manually adjusted, leaving nighttime visibility sometimes subpar. So far, I have driven 16,000 miles with no issues that would require attention from the dealership. Many of the complaints I have read in the accompanying reviews are addressed in the Prestige package. So far, I am pleased with my purchase and would do it again. At 27k miles, I have had no problems to report, only routine maintenance. Three years and 34k miles later, I am still pleased with the vehicle. No maintenance issues to report, just routine expenses such as expensive oil changes and tire rotations from the dealership. Although the lane keep assist feature is a weak point as mentioned earlier, it has been updated at 44k. The brakes did seem to vibrate during highway braking, but after replacing the brake pads, the issue was resolved. Maintenance costs at the dealership are annoyingly high, but the vehicle has been very dependable to date. The MMI interface is not very user-friendly, but overall, it remains a pleasure to drive. At 72k, the rear springs rusted and had to be replaced for $1,200, which was unfortunate. However, there have been no other issues or repairs since purchase, except for typical wear items, and the original battery is still in use.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the new 2021 Q5. I previously owned a 2017 A4 with the new 2 liter engine and had a lot of satisfying experiences since that purchase. The new Q5 is simply a more refined and even better equipped SUV version of my old car. While not quite as quick, the engine pulls willingly and smoothly for me. It makes me feel very confident merging into traffic. I have come to truly appreciate the Quattro as more sure footed than 2WD and no wheel spin. The outside of my Audi is gorgeous Navarra Blue with black leather interior. The styling looks more refined now and good from every angle to me. The size feels just right. I don't need a lot of space and don't want the extra size of a larger SUV. The usual Audi interior styling is perfect for me, but I love the new larger touch screen, still getting used to that feature. For navigation along with the virtual cockpit it is the best. Controls are placed where I would expect to find them. I am getting to quickly appreciate the 360 degree view for parking and tight spaces. In a short period of time I have yet to use adaptive cruise control or lane keeping. First impressions of this SUV are all good for me and I am very glad of my purchase. Based on list price and features included it feels significantly better value than BMW X3 or Mercedes GLC. I was able to get a price that made me feel like I wasn't going to get better value for my auto shopping dollar. So I would definitely recommend giving the new Q5 a test drive. Let me know if you have any questions!

I've been driving BMWs since 1999, and I must say, they've been quite a ride! I've owned a 2000 540i, a 2004 X-5 4.4, a 2008 750iL, and a 2011 535i with the sport package. However, I must admit that at some point, between the 2008 and 2011 models, BMW seemed to have lost its charm and turned into something more like a Lexus. The 2011 535i was a competent vehicle, but it lacked the excitement and personality that I was looking for in a car. That's why I decided to switch to a 2016 Q5 3.0T, and boy, am I glad I did! It's great to be driving a true German car again. The steering in this car is so responsive that you can feel the road beneath you. The suspension is firm and engaged, yet it doesn't feel harsh at all. Plus, there are plenty of luxury features that make driving this car an absolute pleasure. In short, if you're someone who loves driving but also needs the convenience of an SUV, then this is simply the perfect car for you!

The vehicle has impressive interiors and good acceleration, providing an overall enjoyable ride. Although the auto engine shut off feature causes some annoyance due to the jerking upon braking and releasing the brake, it can be easily disabled. The clicking/rattling noise during the ABS/ESC self-check is a normal feature of the vehicle, as confirmed by Audi. Any vibration between 60-70mph is being checked under warranty. While the ergonomics could be improved with a better place to rest your left elbow, this can be easily remedied with an elbow buddy from Amazon. The Audi MMI system, while lacking a touch screen, is easy to use once you get used to the synaptic touchpad. Overall, this vehicle is a great choice for those looking for a confident and enjoyable driving experience.
