Audi A3 problems

The Audi A3 is a subcompact executive/small family car (C-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automaker Audi AG since September 1996, currently in its fourth generation.

The first two generations of the Audi A3 were based on the Volkswagen Group A platform, while the third and fourth generations use the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.

First generation (Typ 8L; 1996)

The original A3 (or Type 8L) was announced back in June 1995, but introduced first in the European market for more than year in September 1996, marking Audi's return to the production of smaller cars following the demise of the Audi 50 in 1978. This was the first Volkswagen Group model to use the "PQ34" or "A4" platform, bearing a close resemblance to the contemporary Volkswagen Golf Mk4, which arrived a year later. Within three years, this platform was used for total of seven cars.

The A3 was initially available only with a three-door hatchback body, to present a more sporty image than the Golf, in both front and four-wheel drive. The inline four-cylinder engines were transversely mounted. The Audi A3 was the eighth model in the Audi lineup to use five valves per cylinder. The dashboard was also used by the first generation SEAT León and second generation SEAT Toledo.

The United Kingdom market first received the Audi A3 in November 1996.

In 1999 Audi expanded the range with the introduction of more powerful versions: a 1.8 turbo rated 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp), and a 1.9 TDI diesel engine with unit injector "Pumpe Düse" (PD) technology and variable geometry turbocharger. The four-wheel-drive A3 1.8T quattro used either the 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) or 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) engine, and the same Haldex Traction-based four-wheel-drive system as the Audi S3 and the Audi TT. Also in 1999, Audi also introduced a five-door body.

In late 2000 the A3 range was revised with new headlights and rear lamps, other minor cosmetic changes, an improved interior, and the introduction of a six-speed manual gearbox, on the 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) 1.8 Turbo and the new 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp) 1.9 TDI.

Audi's electronic stability control, traction-control, and brake force distribution computer became standard equipment in some countries.

Although the first-generation Audi A3 was replaced in Europe in 2003, the first generation model continued to be sold in some markets. Production of the first generation model stopped in Brazil in 2006.

Common Audi A3 problems

The Audi A3 is a popular compact executive car, but like any vehicle, it can experience common problems that affect its performance and reliability. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the Audi A3, based on complaints from owners:

  • Engine Failure: All 2.0-ltr models of the Audi A3, particularly diesel versions, are known to have issues with engine failure. This is caused by excessive wear to a sprocket on the oil pump and can happen at almost any time. The only solution is to replace the oil pump with a new one.
  • Stiff Gear Change: Audi A3s with a six-speed manual gearbox may experience difficulties in shifting between gears, especially between 1st and 2nd gears. This is due to a gearbox synchromesh fault. While having a professional install a replacement can be expensive, you can find a low-cost replacement easily and install it yourself.
  • Weak Brake Pedal: Audi A3s built between 1996 and 1999 are prone to having a weak brake pedal. This is caused by rapid wear in the brake vacuum pump. To fix this issue, you can check your pipe for cracks, order a replacement brake vacuum pump, and replace the damaged one yourself.
  • Engine Misfire: The Audi A3 may experience engine misfires, leading to a loss of power and the Check Engine Light coming on. This is usually caused by an engine coil failure, which requires replacing the coils or, in rare cases, the spark plugs.
  • Losing Power: Automatic A3s may lose power while driving due to a faulty clutch temperature gauge. This issue can be resolved by replacing the faulty clutch temperature gauge with a new one.
  • Rear Wheel Coming Off: Audi A3s built between August 1st and August 31st, 2017, may have a problem with the rear hub carrier, which can cause the rear wheel to come off while driving. To fix this issue, you'll need to buy a replacement rear hub carrier and a rear wheel.
  • Noisy Front Suspension: The Audi A3's front suspension can generate a rumbling noise, accompanied by occasional squeaks. This issue can be addressed by replacing worn-out parts in the suspension system.
  • Grinding Noise from Steering: A grinding noise from the steering column is a common problem in the Audi A3. This is caused by a faulty control unit on the steering column, which needs to be replaced.
  • Air-Conditioning Problems: The Audi A3's air-conditioning system may experience issues, such as whistling noises or failure to cool the cabin properly. These problems can be resolved by replacing faulty components, such as the expansion valve.
  • Oil Pressure Problems: The Audi A3 may display engine warning lights and emit a 'bong' sound due to issues with the oil pressure sensor. This can be fixed by replacing the faulty sensor.

These common problems with the Audi A3 can affect the car's performance, safety, and overall ownership experience. Regular maintenance, prompt repairs, and staying informed about recalls and manufacturer service bulletins can help address these issues in a timely manner and prolong the lifespan of the vehicle.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-20
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-22
  • VIN: WAUKFGFF1F1
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Shortly after starting the car, and while exiting a parking lot, the car stalled and lost engine power. I was able to start the car back up for long enough to be able to pull back into the parking lot however after the car got parked the engine refused to start and stay running for the next hour. After a check using OBD11, the codes were showing the cause of the original problem was low fuel pressure which ended up causing misfires. The only way I was able to get the car running and staying running was by purging the system repeatedly by turning on the ignition without starting the car. This has all happened once before while I was driving at relatively low speeds (around 25 MPH) in a town, and I had to go through the same process. No warning lights show for the first multiple attempts at starting the car until it consistently fails to start. No inspections have taken place.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-08
  • VIN: WAUACGFF0F1
  • Components: SEAT BELTS,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Dear NHTSA, I am filing a complaint about the handling of a recall repair on my 2015 Audi A3 (VIN: [XXX] ) for the suction jet pump. The service experience has been frustrating and raises concerns about the repair’s quality. 1.First Visit - Inadequate Information: During my first visit to the service center, over an hour away, I was turned away because my fuel level was too high. I was never informed that my gas tank needed to be below a certain level for the repair, resulting in wasted time and travel. 2.Second Visit - Check Engine Light Still On: On my second visit, the suction jet pump was supposedly repaired, but my check engine light remained on. I had informed the service advisor that the light was related to an EVAP system malfunction, which I was told could be caused by a faulty suction jet pump. After speaking with multiple mechanics, I learned that a malfunctioning suction jet pump could cause fuel to enter the EVAP system, damaging parts like the purge valve or charcoal canister. 3.Unreasonable Charges: The service advisor insisted that the remaining EVAP issues were unrelated to the recall and wanted to charge $220 for another diagnostic and repairs, without even inspecting the car after the recall service. This seems unfair, as there’s no way to confirm without a proper check. 4.Missing Seat Belt Buckle: After the recall service, I discovered that the rear driver’s side seat belt buckle was missing. This is a major safety concern and needs to be addressed. I request NHTSA’s help in investigating the repair quality and ensuring these issues are resolved fairly. Thank you for your attention. When I first considered Audi, I was under the impression that the A4 was the smallest sedan they offered, and was pleasantly surprised to discover the A3. I initially loved my purchase, as the car is visually appealing, handles well, has a powerful engine, and boasts impressive interior appointments. However, I have experienced some reliability issues that have dampened my enthusiasm for the car. Over the past three years, I have had to deal with a failed water pump, a failed main computer (which Audi struggled to fix), a failed thermostat, and a few other issues that have required the car to be in the shop for several days at a time. Additionally, my A3 has been subject to three recalls during my ownership, two of which Audi has declined to fix. With my warranty set to expire in a few months, I am reluctantly considering other brands. While I would like to keep my Audi, the cost of a 2-year extended warranty (almost $3000) coupled with the issues I have experienced make it difficult to justify. It is a shame, as I really appreciate the styling of Audi vehicles. Consumer Reports suggests that the A4 and A5 have better reliability, but I prefer the size of the A3. I suppose I will have to look into the BMW 2 series instead.

Most reviews on this car are based on the first 0-2 years after it was new. While this can provide a general features list, it may not give you a complete idea of what it's like to own this car with years under its belt and gremlins shaken out. In this review, I'll outline the maintenance I've done on my 2011 2.0 TFSI (EA888 Gen1) with a manual transmission, s-line trim (on the standard suspension), and tech package (bluetooth, heated seats and mirrors) so that late buyers can make a more informed decision. The car is bone stock, with 83k miles on the clock. Firstly, it's important to note that the engine in this car (EA888 Gen1) has a recall on the timing chain tensioner that you should absolutely be aware of. The factory tensioner can fail at any time without warning, causing severe damage to the interference engine. If this maintenance hasn't been done on the car you want to buy, budget $800-$1200 to have it done preventatively IMMEDIATELY or you'll be sorry. Most vehicles have had this maintenance, but not all! A good mechanic can check if this was done in less than an hour. I had this maintenance done this year. Additionally, the chain is subject to stretch and should be replaced at around 120k miles. If you're replacing the chain, also consider replacing the (plastic!!!) guides. A total chain replacement, including the tensioner, guides and chain cost me a little under $2k. The engine is susceptible to carbon buildup, so it's recommended to have the valves media blasted at least every 50k miles, possibly less. I'm due for this service in about 20k miles. To prevent this issue, change the oil every 5k miles instead of Audi's recommended 10k. Lastly, my seat backs came unglued in 2020 on an extremely hot summer day. They cost $200 new from Audi, or $15 to fix myself with sandpaper and JB Weld. I chose the latter option. I also experienced an intake manifold failure shortly after I bought this car in 2017. I hope this review helps you make an informed decision! The part was still under warranty, so it was replaced for free. It's important to note that the manifold is a plastic, non-serviceable part, so replacement is the only option if anything goes wrong. While I haven't experienced any issues with the fuel pumps, water pump, AC compressor, or electronics in the car, some forums indicate that others have. On the bright side, the car is a joy to drive! The engine provides enough power to keep the car moving smoothly, and the interior has held up well over the nearly 10 years I've owned it. The leather seats are still in great condition, and the dashboard has physical buttons for everything (unless it's a premium plus model, which comes with a touch screen). Visibility is good, and the storage space is excellent for a hatchback. The car feels nimble and has a tight turning radius, making it easy to park and perform quick U-turns. The exterior has held up well to northeastern winters, and I regularly receive compliments on its styling. If you can find one, the manual transmission is extremely light and satisfying. While very few of these cars were made with a 6-speed, it's worth considering if you're in the market for a new car. The car is also easily tuned. Lastly, if you're tall, be sure to test drive it first, as it may be uncomfortable for those over 6'4A stage 1 tune, which is only a software update, can give you an extra 50hp with better fuel economy and no negative effects on the engine. It's definitely an option worth considering! However, it's important to keep up with preventative maintenance and have a reputable Audi/VW mechanic nearby just in case. If you're someone who wants a car that'll work without fuss, this might not be the best choice for you. For the record, this car has never left me stranded, but I do spend a lot of time, energy, and money to make sure that's the case. It's also important to assess who you're buying the car from and if they've kept up with its maintenance. Lastly, most of what I said here also applies to the MK5 GTI. This car is essentially a more refined version of the 4 door GTI of the same age, having more sound deadening, looser steering, and a nicer interior, plus it's cheaper. So, it's definitely worth considering!

I absolutely love this car in most categories! The look is great, the fuel economy is impressive, it's fun to drive, and the stereo is fantastic. Although, the turbo lag may take some getting used to. When accelerating from a stop, it can take a full second or two for the turbo to engage. However, once you've started moving, it's very responsive. The fuel economy is great and overall, it's a really fun little car. I do want to mention that the heated seats are not very effective. According to my dealer, they have received numerous complaints about them and they perform 'to Spec'. If you Google Audi Heated seats, you'll find several Audi forums discussing the issue. So, if you're a fan of heated seats like I am, just be aware that they don't work.

Firstly, I must say that I was drawn to this car due to its all-wheel drive and the dealership had it in stock, which was convenient. The car's appearance is stunning and it handles and accelerates really well. The brown leather seats are both comfortable and attractive. The adaptive cruise control system is excellent and it maintains the set speed even on downhills, which is not always the case with other cars. However, after only 8000 miles and six months, the rear camera stopped working, which in turn prevented the automatic parallel parking from functioning. Although the dealership ordered the parts to repair this under warranty, it took four months for the car to be repaired. During this time, none of these features could be used on a practically brand new car. As a backup camera has been mandatory equipment on new cars since 2018 in the USA, I consider this a safety feature. To not have this functioning for such a long period is worrying. The car also suffered from a variety of squeaks and rattles from the outset, particularly from the rear passenger door. Although the dealership checked this out by driving around their paved parking lot, they couldn't hear anything. This was hardly surprising at such a low speed in a smooth area. Despite a reset from the dealership, the radio could not memorize my favorite radio channels for more than ten days or so and would have to be constantly reprogrammed. No explanation was given as to why this was continually happening. Additionally, I would receive notifications on my phone (once when I was about 300 miles away from the car) that the trunk was open or the lights were on. When I would get someone to go to my house to check, of course, there was nothing visibly untoward. Unfortunately, the worst aspect of owning this car was the terrible service and attitude displayed by the Audi dealer. Despite owning many brand new cars, I have never experienced such poor service and attitude before. This was unfortunately the worst experience I have ever had. The dealership was completely indifferent to my issues and downright incompetent in dealing with them. On two occasions, I was told that the A3 was the 'entry level' car into the Audi range, so what did I expect? If this attitude by the dealer is the norm that Audi thinks will encourage brand loyalty and repeat sales, then I am dismayed and disappointed. I'd guess that a quarter of the mileage on the car was from having to take it to the dealership. I live rurally and the nearest dealership is a six-hour drive and an overnight hotel stay. Obviously, this is not their fault, but if the car had been prone to fewer dealer visits (including recalls for the seatbelts and airbags), I would have saved myself a tidy sum. I paid cash for the car and kept it for about 18 months. I wanted to like the car, but the faults on a brand new car were unforgivable and didn't inspire confidence. The depreciation in the time I owned the car was disappointing. By far the worst aspect of ownership was the dealership. Their incompetence became pitifully laughable. Their lack of responsibility, humility, and initial inability to offer even the most basic apology for their screw-ups was irksome. In summary, I wanted to like this car. It is zippy and good looking, but the build quality of my example was severely lacking, and this tied with the arrogance and lack of customer service at the dealership means that it is extremely unlikely I will ever buy another Audi product. Instead, I went back to their main all-wheel-drive sporty rival where the customer experience from my dealer is second to none. So far, my new car has been perfect.

I recently purchased this car after taking it for a test drive of over 250 miles across several days. During the drive, I went up a very long grade from Knoxville to just past Mohawk up I-81 and was impressed with its fuel efficiency, getting 39.9 mpg Hwy and 34.8 city mpg. The PPI (inspection) was free and the car passed with flying colors after being thoroughly checked. The price of 11044.80 out the door was advised to be a great purchase. The seats are extremely comfortable and both seats are heated, with ample leg room for the passenger. The controls took a while to figure out, but once I got used to their position, they were easy to use. The car also has some interesting features, such as the ability to fold the mirrors for tight parking areas. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a comfortable and efficient ride.I discovered that stepping backwards with my right foot into the car first makes getting in much easier with my fused back from the S1-T11. Otherwise, I have to put the seat all the way down and all the way back to get in and out. Stepping in backwards saves my seat position and simplifies getting in and out. The telescoping/tilt wheel has little movement, but seat positioning with power function quickly utilizes this weakness and makes it a plus. This seat is perfect for me as I am 5'4 1/2Looks like the whole top will have to be replaced, including the cushion, to fix it. The storage area in the back is smaller than the Jetta, but still quite ample. The vents, knobs, and other features resemble a cockpit and were designed that way. They are easy to reach and use. The manual is easy to read and, for the most part, very helpful. Access to the 12-volt power and auxiliary input is under the front seat armrest and can be accessed through a sliding panel to the rear. I can even listen to my cassettes on a remote deck now! The TDI can be opened by the release just forward of the left knee. The motor hesitates at the start unless in sport position. It is easy to access all the fluids. This car has 34260 miles and purrs like a kitten. It's quite responsive when you need to punch it and holds hills well with no decrease in speed. It nibbles away at the oil, so keep an eye on it and carry extra with you just above the spare tire. Put a 1/8th inch cut-out of particle/cardboard and this will give you about 7 inches of ample storage area besides the provided pockets. This is a great car! I will update later.

We bought our car on December 23rd and drove 500 miles home. During the break-in period, we are averaging 35 mpg. We are really enjoying the comfort and fun of driving, but we find the navigation system to be very deficient compared to our Lexus RX400h system. We wish that Audi offered homelink in this car. The convenience group would be even more convenient with the ability to open at least a garage and neighborhood gate. We have noticed some irritating rattles in the sunroof that are waiting for adjustment. We also wish that Audi included at least one quart of oil for the break-in period. Overall, we are very pleased with this car and would highly recommend it.

I'm so glad you bought the car with DSG, premium and open sky! The red exterior and black interior look amazing and it's no wonder people stare at it all the time. The car has great performance and pickup, and the mileage has been fantastic so far. On your trip to Tahoe from the Bay, you averaged 29.3 and even coming down you still did 28.5 (even if you were going a little faster). At 6'3

This is an impressive luxury car. The car handles and rides extremely well, going exactly where you point it. The ride is smooth and very quiet. The leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather seats feel amazing. Although the sound system and infotainment system are excellent, they may take some time to get familiar with. I am not a fan of the engine start/stop system, but I am glad that it can be turned off. Overall, this is a great compact luxury car that I look forward to driving every day and admiring after I park it.
