Audi A4 2006 problems
The Audi A4 is a line of luxury compact executive cars produced since 1994 by the German car manufacturer Audi, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The A4 has been built in five generations and is based on the Volkswagen Group B platform. The first generation A4 succeeded the Audi 80. The automaker's internal numbering treats the A4 as a continuation of the Audi 80 lineage, with the initial A4 designated as the B5-series, followed by the B6, B7, B8, and the B9.
The B8 and B9 versions of the A4 are built on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform shared with several models and brands across the Volkswagen Group. The Audi A4 automobile layout consists of a front-engine design, with transaxle-type transmissions mounted at the rear of the engine. The cars are front-wheel drive, or on some models, "quattro" all-wheel drive. The A4 is available as a sedan and station wagon. Historically, the second (B6) and third generations (B7) of the A4 also included a convertible version. For the fourth generation (B8) and onwards, the convertible, along with a new coupé and 5-door liftback variant, was spun-off by Audi into a new nameplate called the Audi A5.
B5 (Typ 8D; 1994)
The first generation Audi A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) debuted in October 1994, with production starting November 1994 and European sales commencing in January 1995 for the 1995 model year. North American sales later began in September 1995 for the 1996 model year. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B5 (PL45) platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat (B5, Typ 3B). It had a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. Many variations of the A4 were also available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan; the Avant (estate/wagon) was introduced in November 1995 and went on sale in February 1996.
Development began in 1988, with the first design sketches being created later that year. By 1991, an exterior design by Imre Hasanic was chosen and frozen for November 1994 production by 1992. The interior design was later finalized in 1992, with pilot production commencing in the first half of 1994. Development concluded in the third quarter of 1994, preceding November 1994 start of production.
A wide range of engines were available in European markets, between 1.6 and 2.8 litres for petrol engines; and a 1.9-litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group's VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 bhp) or 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp). The 2.6 and 2.8-litre V6 engines which had been carried over from the old 80/90 proved popular, although in North America, the 2.8-litre engine was the only V6 that was available there until 1997. A 2.4-liter version was developed especially for the Thai market, where import duty jumped from 60 to 100 percent on cars of over 2,400 cc displacement.
The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8-litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged 1.8T version produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) torque. Moreover, a quattro GmbH special edition of the B5 1.8T was later available in Germany and Europe, for which the engine's power output was raised to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) and 235 N⋅m (173 lb⋅ft). Five-valve technology was also added to a reengineered V6 family of engines in 1997, starting with the 2.8-litre V6 30v, which now produced 193 PS (142 kW; 190 bhp), followed by a 2.4-litre V6 which was a downsize from the previous 2.6 litre, 150 hp (112 kW) engine, but with a power increase to 165 PS (121 kW; 163 bhp).
Audi also debuted their new tiptronic automatic transmission on the B5 platform, based on the unit Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter offering the driver a fully-automatic operation or manual selection of the gear ratios.
The B5 marked Audi's continued move into the midsize luxury car segment, having started this trajectory notably with later model years of the preceding Audi 80/90 B4. Despite initial mechanical problems, overall build and assembly quality were lauded both by the automotive press and within Audi and Volkswagen, and at the time, parent company Volkswagen declared the B5 the company-wide build quality benchmark for all its other models.

Common Audi A4 2006 problems
The Audi A4 2006, particularly the 2.0-litre diesel models, has some common problems that owners have reported. One of the most frequent issues is the burning of oil over time, which can lead to serious engine damage if not addressed promptly. This problem can be mitigated by regular oil changes and monitoring the oil level using the dipstick.
Another common problem is the failure of the central locking system, which can be frustrating for owners. While the issue may not be immediately apparent, it can cause inconvenience and require a visit to the dealership for a fix. It's advisable to check that all the doors unlock and that the remote is working correctly before purchasing a used A4.
Some Audi A4s, including the 2006 model, have been reported to have gloveboxes and dashboards that rattle or squeak. A test drive should expose any faults in this regard, and it's worth noting that these issues are generally not severe but can affect the overall driving experience.
Problems changing gear and very stiff clutches can be early signs of a known gearbox problem. During a test drive, it's essential to ensure that every gear can be selected easily. If the car is less than three years old, Audi has been known to contribute to the cost of repairing some cars out of warranty, which can be a relief for owners.
While the Audi A4 is generally a reliable car, it's worth noting that some engines and transmissions may have specific issues that are more prevalent than others. For example, some automatic transmissions in earlier A4s had problems, and high-performance turbo engines may show signs of being thrashed, such as a high-pitched whining sound or difficulty starting.
The Audi A4's Australian dealer network is well established, and parts availability and pricing are generally not a concern. However, insurance costs for the A4 are often higher than average, particularly for high-performance sports variants. It's essential to shop around carefully for insurance, especially for younger or inexperienced drivers.
In summary, the Audi A4 2006 is generally a reliable car, but like any vehicle, it can have specific issues that affect certain models or components. Regular maintenance, monitoring, and addressing any problems promptly can help ensure a positive ownership experience.

- VIN: WAUEF78E96A
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS
- Summary: PURCHASED THE VEHICLE A FEW MONTHS AGO (JULY OF 2020). BEFORE BUYING IT I WAS TOLD THAT THE WARNING CHIME FOR THE SEATBELT HAD STOPPED WORKING , SO I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL GERMAN AUTO SHOP TO SEE WHAT WOULD NEEDED TO FIX IT. TO MY SURPRISE, IT'S A PART IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER THAT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED, BUT IT'S A COMMON ISSUE AS THESE CARS AGE FOR THE WARNING CHIME TO FAIL THEREFORE NOT NOTIFYING OR WARNING IF THE DRIVER OR PASSENGER BELT IS BUCKLED. WARNING CHIME DOES NOT WORK WHETHER STATIONARY, OR MOVING FOR ANY SEAT IN THE VEHICLE.
ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-09-11
- VIN: WAUDF78E16A
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: AUDI ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN THAT I FOUND ON YOUR WEBSITE. THIS BULLETIN WAS REGARDING THE EXACT PARTS THE DEALER (AUDI) IDENTIFIED AS BEING AFFECTED ON MY CAR (HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP, CAM FOLLOWER, AND CORRESPONDING INTAKE CAMSHAFT CAM LOBE). THIS BULLETIN (NOT A RECALL, BUT DISTRIBUTED INTERNALLY TO DEALERSHIPS) CLEARLY STATES THAT THIS IS A WIDESPREAD ISSUE THAT AFFECTED ALL VIN RANGES OF SPECIFIED AUDI MODELS FROM 2005-2007 THAT INCLUDED MINE. AUDI EXTENDED DRIVETRAIN COVERAGE ON THESE VEHICLES TO 10YR/120K MI. THIS ISSUE CAUSES A WORSENING LOSS OF POWER UPON ACCELERATING (MAKING DRIVING AT ALL SPEEDS DANGEROUS) AND EVENTUAL ENGINE FAILURE IF LEFT ALONE. I AM THE 3RD OWNER OF THIS CAR, SO I DID NOT RECEIVE THE INTENDED LETTER FROM AUDI STATING THE SPECIFICS OF THIS COVERAGE EXTENSION. MY VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT ~110K MILES AT THE TIME OF THIS SERVICE (~4-5 DAYS AGO). UPON BRINGING THIS BULLETIN TO THE ATTENTION OF AUDI SERVICE MANAGER, HE DID NOT ASK ME FOR THE BULLETIN NUMBER OR REVISION, HE JUST DENIED COVERING IT VERBALLY SAYING THE COVERAGE WAS "10YR/120K MI, WHICHEVER CAME FIRST" BUT WOULD NOT SEND ME A COPY OF THE EXTENSION LETTER PROVING THIS. THE COST OF REPAIRS RELATED TO THIS ISSUE IS ~$5,600. I OPENED A CASE WITH AUDI OF AMERICA. I PROVIDED THE REQUESTED INFO, AND WAS STILL NOT SENT/EMAILED A COPY OF THIS LETTER, OR PROOF THAT IT WAS SENT TO THE OWNER OF THE VEHICLE. I WAS TOLD CASES TAKE UP TO A WEEK TO REVIEW (THEY WOULD NEED ME TO PROVIDE SERVICE RECORDS FOR THE VEHICLE, ETC). I WAS CALLED LESS THAN 24HRS LATER THAT THE CASE WAS DENIED, BEFORE I PROVIDED ANY INFO OR PLED MY CASE THAT A COMPANY WITH THE SLOGAN "TRUTH IN ENGINEERING" SHOULD STAND BEHIND AN ACKNOWLEDGED ENGINEERING FLAW. REPAIRS ARE ~1.5X THE VALUE OF THE CAR. I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO FIX THIS AND IT CREATES AN UNSAFE DRIVING CONDITION. PLEASE HELP.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-02-27
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: WAUAC48H46K
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: MY PERSONAL AUDI A4 WAS INVOLVED IN A FRONT END COLLISION ON AN INNER-CITY ROAD DUE TO LOSS OF FRICTION ON FROZEN ICE. DESPITE THERE ONLY BEING A DRIVER PRESENT IN THE CAR, THE DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG FROM THE STEERING WHEEL DID NOT ACTIVATE WHILE THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG DID. I HAD ALREADY PREVIOUSLY CHECKED THE TAKATA RECALL, WHICH AFFECT THE EXACT MODEL OF MY VEHICLE, YET WHEN I ENTERED THE VIN, IT DISPLAYED THAT NO RECALLS WERE PRESENT. THE COLLISION HAPPENED AT A SPEED OF LESS THAN 25 MPH, AND THE UNNEEDED DAMAGE COSTS PF THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAGS ALONGSIDE THE HEALTH RISKS OF NOT HAVING AN AIRBAG DEPLOY FOR THE DRIVER HAS LED ME TO FILING THIS COMPLAINT AS IT WAS A VERY UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-10-28
- VIN: WAUKH78E26A
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING

- VIN: WAUAF78E16A
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I PURCHASED THE CAR FROM JOHN AND HE STATED HE DROVE IT APPX 30-40K MILES SINCE HE RECEIVED THE CAR. BUT IN 2016 THE MILES ON THE PINK SLIP SAYS 149214 AND NOW THE MILES ARE AT 150700. I BELIEVE HE TAMPERED WITH THE ODOMETER, TURNED IT OFF AND DROVE THE CAR WITHOUT THE ODOMETER ON. WHEN I ASKED HIM HE SAID IN THE LAST 3- 4 YEARS HE DROVE IT 30-40K MILES. I ASKED HIM WHY IS THE ODOMETER NOT SHOWING THOSE MILES AND HE DIDNT KNOW HOW TO REPLY.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-02-07
- VIN: WAUDF78E06A
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH ADAPTIVE HEADLIGHTS. WHEN I TURN THE PASSENGER SIDE LOW BEAM GOES OUT.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-10-01
- VIN: WAUDF78E96A
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: THE HEADLIGHTS WILL FLICKER ON AND OFF, AND HAVE TO BE MANUALLY TURNED OFF AND TURNED BACK ON. REPAIRS AND REPLACEMENTS OF LIGHTS DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. COMPLETE REMOVAL OF THE XENON BALLAST AND SEALING THE BALLAST SEEMED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, AND SEEMS TO BE A DEFECT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF THE BALLAST THAT CAUSES MOISTURE TO INVADE, AND SHORT THE HEADLIGHTS OUT.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-07-15
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: WAUKG74F66N
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: ON 7/15/18 I HAD A MYSTERIOUS ACCIDENT IN OTTAWA COUNTY, MICHIGAN, WHERE I WAS KNOCKED OUT FOR SEVERAL HOURS AND I HAVE NO RECOLLECTION OFF ANYTHING AT LEAST A FEW MINUTES BEFORE THE ACCIDENT. MY 2006 A6 QUATTRO 3.2 AVANT (STATION WAGON) WAS TOTALED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. THE COUNTY POLICE RESCUED ME AND SENT ME TO THE HOLLAND HOSPITAL FOR A SERIES OF VERY COSTLY PROCEDURES. THE POLICE REPORT WROTE THAT THE AIRBAG WAS DEPLOYED. AND BECAUSE IT WAS NOT IN A MAJOR INTERSECTION, A SIMPLE STOP SIGN AT THE US-31, FROM THE INFORMATION IN THE REPORT, I SUSPECT I HAD NOT FACED ANY IMPENDING CRASH TO HAVE HAD TO PUSH THE BREAKS HARD, AND MY VEHICLE ONLY STOPPED BECAUSE IT HIT A VALLEY SHAPED DITCH IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY. BECAUSE OF THE NUMBER OF RELATED TAKATA AIRBAG FAILURES ON THOSE TYPES OF CARS, BY THE, ON BOTH SIDES, I SUGGEST A THOUGHROUGH INVESTIGATION OF THE CASE. I WAS BLESSED OR LUCKY TO HAVE NOT LOST MY LIFE NOR BECAME SERIOUSLY INJURED, BUT MY FINANCIAL LOSSES AND LEGAL COMPLICATIONS AMOUNTED TO A LOT. I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE AT RISK OF NOT HAVING THEIR LIVES END BECAUSE OF AN UNNECESSARY MECHANICAL FAILURE IN THE AUDI VEHICLES.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-09-01
- VIN: WAUAF78E56A
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: CVT TRANSMISSION TOTAL FAILURE - TRANSMISSION SPECIALIST ADVISES THAT SEVERAL OF THE FIRST CVT TRANSMISSIONS RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC WERE DEFECTIVE IN DESIGN AND PRODUCTION, AND HAVE BEEN UPGRADED OVER THE YEARS TO CORRECT FOR THESE EARLY DEFICIENCIES. THE SPECIALIST FURTHER ADVISES THAT AUDI AND SATURN ARE NOTORIOUS FOR THESE DEFECTS. IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE, THE TRANSMISSION SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING WHILE TRAVELING ON A MAJOR ROADWAY. ALL OF THE INDICATOR LIGHTS IN THE GEAR SELECTOR STARTED FLASHING SIMULTANEOUSLY, AND THE VEHICLE WAS LEFT IMMOBILE IN AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS POSITION. AUDI QUOTED MORE THAN $8,000 TO REPAIR THE TRANSMISSION. THE TRANSMISSION REPAIR WAS COMPLETED BY A LOCAL TRANSMISSION EXPERT FOR A LITTLE OVER $5,000. IT IS THIS EXPERT WHO ADVISED OF THE LONG-STANDING AND WELL-ESTABLISHED PROBLEMS IN AUDI'S EARLY CVT TRANSMISSIONS, AND SAID DEFINITIVELY THAT AUDI SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO HANDLE THIS AS A SAFETY AND DESIGN/MANUAFACTURING DEFECT RECALL.

WHEN IT FLICKERS, AN INDICATOR WARNING LIGHT ACTIVATES ON THE DASHBOARD. THIS SEEMS TO BE A WIRING PROBLEM. BOTH HEADLIGHTS WERE CHANGED AND BRAND NEW WHEN THE CAR WAS PURCHASED. TWO YEARS LATER, THIS FLICKERING BEGAN. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THE FLICKERING OF THE HEADLIGHT IS TO COMPLETELY TURN OFF THE HEADLIGHTS FOR A FEW SECONDS, THEN TURN THEM BACK ON. EVERYTHING IS FINE AFTER THAT. PLEASE RECALL THIS ISSUE. I HAVE READ MANY POSTS ONLINE WITH OTHER AUDI A4 OWNERS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR VEHICLES.

Audi A4 2006 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the Audi A4 2006.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2005-2008 Audi A4 Sedan, A4 Avant, S4 Avant and S4 Sedan, 2007-2008 RS4 Sedan, 2004 RS4 Cabriolet, 2007-2009 A4 Cabriolet and S4 Cabriolet, 2005-2011 A6 Sedan, 2006-2011 A6 Avant, and 2007-2011 S6 Sedan vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Audi has notified owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag with an alternate remedy part, free of charge. The recall began June 29, 2018. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69R7. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 16V382, 17V032 and 18V004 and includes vehicles that may have had their air bag previously replaced under one of those campaigns.

The 3.2 L V6 has everything you want in a luxury sport sedan and more. No question the bigger engine is worth it. Opt for the 6-speed manual-- the driving experience is pure pleasure. This car beats the Lexus IS 300 (I owned one) and with its Quattro engineering BMW 330 drivers have nothing over it. The interior and comfort only add to the driving experience.

Amazing car! I have owned Mercedes, BMW and now Audi! In my experience, German cars are the best! It's important to take good care of your car to avoid problems. If you take care of your car by checking the oil level on every fueling, waiting a couple of minutes before driving after starting the engine in the morning, and avoiding killing the engine, you will have a great experience with your car. Let's all write positive reviews and enjoy our cars!

You'll love the excellent fuel economy of the 1.8t engine! Despite the added weight, it runs the same numbers as the 3.0. Plus, it's beautiful both inside and out.

Best car you've ever owned! It gets 25+ MPG in the city and 30+ MPG on the highway, making it super fun to drive. It's an all-around great compact sports car. You may have experienced some minor maintenance issues, but let's be honest, there isn't a car out there that doesn't have them!

Great car! The 6-speed automatic transmission is a little quirky, but the sport transmission feature is so much fun to drive. The acceleration is excellent for a 4-cylinder engine. The interior is very quiet, roomy, and comfortable. Although, I must admit, I'm not a fan of the seat belt/door open/headlight alarm. It can be quite annoying and rather loud. Also, the brake dust is excessive. But other than that, I really enjoy every aspect of the car.

Hi there! Thank you for considering this car. I just wanted to let you know that it has had some issues in the past, including a new engine and fuel pressure problems. Based on my experience, I would recommend looking into Japanese cars instead. Thanks for your time!

This car is definitely a fun to drive car. However, I had some issues with reliability during my 61,000 miles of ownership. I had to take it to the dealer twice while it was under warranty. The oil filter housing, which was made out of plastic, broke during an oil change and it took nearly a week to receive a new one, which was over a $100. The last month I had it, it threw

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Audi over the past three years. Despite my friend's warning about their own bad experience, I decided to purchase one. Unfortunately, I had a lot of trouble with it - I had to take it to the shop about 35 times over the course of three years, and I had to pay a deductible of $85 per visit for parts that were covered under a CPO warranty. It was definitely a frustrating experience, but I learned a lot from it!

At 49K, the engine intake valve was found to be faulty. Unfortunately, the dealership lost the paperwork and the repair was delayed, causing the check engine light to remain on for an extended period of time. Now, 2k out of warranty, the 4th cylinder is taking in air and requires a new cylinder head and miscellaneous valves. Despite following the manufacturer's instructions for oil changes and maintenance, the dealership is suggesting that I co-pay for a pre-existing condition. As the primary driver of this new foreign-made vehicle, I am disappointed that Audi is not standing behind their product. I hope that they will reconsider their position and provide the necessary support.

I will never own another Audi again. Despite driving the car only 25 miles per day, and using it for commuting purposes only, I encountered $11,000 worth of engine problems, which were 10,000 miles over warranty. The dealer informed me that I needed a new camshaft, turbo, and other parts. Unfortunately, this is not the first time I have experienced issues with an Audi, and I did not receive any assistance from Audi USA.
