Audi 100 problems

audi logo

The Audi 100 and Audi 200 (and sometimes called Audi 5000 in North America) are primarily mid-size/executive cars manufactured and marketed by the Audi division of the Volkswagen Group. The car was made from 1968 to 1997 across four generations (C1–C4), with a two-door model available in the first and second generation (C1-C2), and a five-door model available in the last three generations (C2–C4).

In 1982, the third generation Audi 100 achieved a remarkably low (for its time) drag coefficient of 0.30, featuring flush greenhouse sides with unique sliding window mountings.

The C2 and C3 models of the Audi 100 were marketed in North America as the Audi 5000 from 1978 to 1988, and in South Africa as the Audi 500.

In 1993, the models were mildly restyled, and renamed the Audi A6 series in conjunction with a general new Audi naming scheme, until they were replaced by a new generation of A6, internally code-named C5, in 1997. The Audi 100's traditional competitors include the Mercedes Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series.

Common Audi 100 problems

The Audi 100, a popular and well-regarded executive car produced by Audi, has had its fair share of problems over the years. Some of the most common issues reported by owners include electrical problems, transmission problems, and oil leaks.

Electrical problems were a significant issue for the Audi 100, with many owners reporting issues with the car's electronic control module (ECM) and the ignition switch. These problems could cause the car to stall, and in some cases, the engine would not start at all. Other common electrical issues included faulty alternators, starter motors, and window regulators.

Transmission problems were also common in the Audi 100, particularly in models with automatic transmissions. Owners reported issues with slipping gears, delayed shifts, and harsh shifting. In some cases, the transmission would fail altogether, requiring a costly replacement.

Another common issue with the Audi 100 was oil leaks. Some owners reported leaks from the valve cover gasket, while others had problems with the camshaft seal or the oil pan gasket. Oil leaks could cause a range of issues, including reduced engine performance and even engine failure if the oil level became too low.

Other common problems with the Audi 100 included issues with the air conditioning system, suspension problems, and problems with the power steering system. While these issues were not as widespread as the problems mentioned above, they were still a cause for concern for some owners.

In summary, the Audi 100 was a popular and well-regarded executive car that offered a range of features and technologies that were ahead of its time. While the car had its fair share of problems, it remains an important part of Audi's history and continues to be remembered fondly by many automotive enthusiasts.

  • Summary: COMPLETE ENGINE SHUTDOWN WITHOUT ANY PRIOR WARNING AFTER DRIVING APPROX. 4 HOURS ON I-95 SOUTH. CAR STARTED AND RAN NORMALLY FOR ANOTHER 3 HOURS IMMEDIATELY AFTER I PULLED OVER AND STOPPED. SAME THING HAPPENED THE NEXT DAY AFTER SAME AMOUNT OF DRIVING TIME ON I-75, CAR STARTED WITHOUT PROBLEM AND I REACHED DESTINATION AFTER ANOTHER 15 MINUTES. READOUT OF COMPUTER SHOWED NOTHING. MECHANIC RECOMMENDED TO PROPHYLACTICALLY REPLACE CAM SENSOR WHICH I DID. EFFECT REMAINS TO BE SEEN. RECOMMENDATION: CAR MANUFACTURERS MUST BE FORCED TO TAKE MEASURES TO PREVENT COMPLETE ENGINE SHUTDOWN FOR ANY REASON OTHER THAN A DIRECT ENGINE FAILURE. IT IS TOO DANGEROUS AND COULD LEAD TO SEVERE ACCIDENTS IF THIS HAPPENS IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, ESPECIALLY IN LANES WITH NO SHOULDER! IT IS BAD ENOUGH IF AN ENGINE FAILS BY ITSELF. A BRIEF INTERNET SEARCH SHOWED NUMEROUS REPORTS OF SUCH INCIDENTS!!! *TR

THE TRANSMISSION OIL PAN FRACTURED FROM THE VEHICLE AND THE DRIVER SIDE AIR BAG INDEPENDENTLY DEPLOYED. THE PASSENGER SEAT BELT THEN AUTONOMOUSLY RELEASED AND CAUSED THE CONTACT TO ABRUPTLY HIT THE WINDSHIELD. THE PASSENGER SUFFERED INJURIES TO HIS EYES, HEAD AND NOSE. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURY TO HIS KNEE FROM ABRUPTLY STRIKING THE BOTTOM OF THE STEERING WHEEL. HE SUSTAINED SECOND DEGREE BURNS TO HIS ARMS AND HANDS. A POLICE REPORT WAS AVAILABLE. THE DEALER CONTACT WAS ABLE TO LOCATE A RECALL PERTAINING TO THE AIR BAG FAILURE (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 97V172000: AIR BAGS: FRONTAL: SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE) BUT WAS ADVISED BY THE DEALER THAT HIS VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THEY WOULD SEND AN INVESTIGATOR TO FURTHER INSPECT THE FAILURE. THE INVESTIGATOR DETERMINED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY DEFECTIVE STRUTS. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THEY WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE BECAUSE THE CONTACT FAILED TO HAVE THE STRUTS CHANGED. THE CONTACT DID NOT BELIEVE THE STRUTS WERE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE AND WERE REPLACED LESS THAN 20,000 MILES BEFORE THE FAILURE OCCURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND WAS STILL IN THE DEALER'S POSSESSION. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 186,000. UPDATED 12/01/2010. *LJ UPDATED 12/08/10

  • Summary: I AM A SENIOR CITIZEN, 87 YEARS YOUNG, WHO OWNS A 1994 AUDI 100. I AM THE SECOND OWNER. ACCORDING TO AUDI OF AMERICA, MY VEHICLE WAS ELIGIBLE FOR AN IGNITION SWITCH RECALL AND A NEW SWITCH WAS INSTALLED IN 1996 AT TYSON'S AUDI IN TYSONS CORNER, VA. MY CONCERN IS THIS. I AM EXPERIENCING THE IDENTICAL ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS LISTED IN THE ORIGINAL RECALL. THE DEALER TELLS ME MY PROBLEM THE IGNITION SWITCH AND IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. ISN'T THAT A BIT ODD? ARE IGNITION SWITCHES PARTS THAT USUALLY NEED TO BE REPLACED? HAVE OTHER OWNERS OF THE RECALL EXPERIENCED THAT SAME PROBLEM? WAS THE ORIGINAL REPLACEMENT A NEW TYPE/MODEL SWITCH? I CALLED AUDI OF AMERICA AND TALKED TO THEM ABOUT MY CONCERN. THEY TOLD ME THEY HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY COMPLAINTS. I THOUGHT IT BEST TO AT LEAST REGISTER A COMPLAINT. THANKS FOR YOU TIME! *TR

  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: 92 AUDI 100S, STUCK THROTTLE AND BRAKE BOOST FAILURE, PREVIOUSLY REPORTED. FOUND THE PROBLEM AND AM POSTING IT HERE. THIS CAN KILL SOMEONE. I HOPE NHTSA DOES SOMETHING. AUDI USA WILL NOT. SEE BELOW: FOUND THE PROBLEM. MANGLED PLASTIC DEBRIS IN THE THROTTLE BODY THAT WOULD HANG UP THE PLATE INTERMITTENTLY. SHAME ON ME FOR CALLING IT ACCELERATION WHEN IT WAS ACTUALLY A STUCK THROTTLE. WHAT I LEARNED IS THAT THE SMALL BRIEF THROTTLE STABS YOU DO TO KEEP GOING UPHILL OR IN TRAFFIC CAN RESULT IN VERY HIGH RPMS IF THE THROTTLE STICKS AT MAX EXCURSION. IT MAKES YOU THINK THE ENGINE IS ACCELERATING. SHAME ON AUDI FOR NEVER EXAMINING THE THROTTLE BODY AND IGNORING THE PROBLEM POSED BY THE DISINTEGRATING PLASTIC NECK ON THE VALVE I MENTIONED IN EARLIER POSTS. THE DISINTEGRATION OF THAT THIN PLASTIC NECK APPARENTLY CAN RESULT IN SIMULTANEOUS STUCK THROTTLE (FROM DEBRIS GETTING SUCKED INTO THROTTLE BODY AND PREVENTING THE THROTTLE PLATE FROM RETURNING TO IDLE POSITION) AND LOSS OF BRAKE BOOST THROUGH THE VACUUM LEAK CAUSED BY THE BROKEN NECK. BTW, THE BRAKES WOULD NOT STOP THE CAR ON THE LAST RUNAWAY (ABOUT 5500 RPM), JUST GOT IT DOWN TO ABOUT 20 MPH EVEN WHEN I WAS STANDING ON THEM, HAD TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL (WHICH TOOK THE RPMS TO REDLINE AND LIMITER) AND TURN OFF THE KEY. THAT REALLY SURPRISED ME. THIS PROBLEM COULD EASILY KILL SOMEONE. I HAVE NOTIFIED AUDI USA AND NHTSA BUT NOBODY HAS TAKEN ANY ACTION. I DON'T KNOW WHAT MORE I CAN DO TO PREVENT A TRAGEDY. REMEMBER, TWO OTHERS HAVE REPORTED RUNAWAY/ STUCK THROTTLES ON 92 100S. HOPEFULLY THE DEBRIS WOULD EVENTUALLY GET SUCKED OUT OF THE THROTTLE BODY AND CHEWED UP IN THE ENGINE, BUT MINE DIDN'T. IT HAD TO BE FOUND AND DISLODGED MANUALLY. WHILE IT REMAINS IN THE THROTTLE BODY, IT IS A DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN. *TR

  • Summary: DANGEROUS UNCOMMANDED ACCELERATION. I SUBMITTED A COMPLAINT EARLIER TODAY THAT SAID I THOUGHT IT WAS A CRUISE CONTROL PROBLEM BUT IT ISNT. IT HAPPENED AGAIN TODAY WITH THE CC FUSE PULLED!!! IT WAS PRECEDED BY A FUNNY FEELING IN THE BRAKES, LIKE NOT ENOUGH VACUUM BOOST, THEN RADICAL ENGINE ACCELERATION EVEN WITH MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL. I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL, THE TACH REDLINED AND THEN I SHUT OFF THE IGNITION. STARTED IT AND IT DID IT AGAIN. I AM AN ENGINEER AND NEVER BELIEVED THE STORIES ABOUT AUDIS AND UNINTENDED ACCELERATION... BUT NOW I KNOW IT CAN HAPPEN AND IT IS SUPER DANGEROUS!!!!

  • Summary: THIS IS A FOLLOW-UP TO COMPLAINT 10146994 FILED ON 1-05-06. IT CONCERNS THE RUSTED OUT FUEL LINES ON MY 100CS WAGON FROM AUDI. I HAVE STARTED TO TEAR DOWN TO REPLACE THE LINES, AND SEE WHERE THE MAIN ISSUE SEEMS TO BE. AT ALL OF THE MOUNTING POINTS FOR THE FUEL LINES ON THE UNDERBODY FROM THE FUEL TANK TO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, THE LINES HAVE RUSTED THROUGH. THERE WERE ACTUALLY 8 LEAKS INSTEAD OF THE THREE THAT I ORIGINALLY THOUGHT WERE PRESENT. DUE TO THE RUBBER MOUNTS BEING COMPRESSED AROUND THE LINES, NOT ALL OF THEM SHOWED THE LEAKS UNTIL THE MOUNTING BRACKETS WERE REMOVED. IT APPEARS THAT THE RUBBER MOUNTS THAT ARE USED HOLD WATER ETC. ALLOWING THE FUEL LINES TO BE PRONE TO RUST THROUGH IN THESE AREAS. IN CHECKING ONLINE FORUMS, IT SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM WITH PREVIOUS MODEL YEARS AS WELL. I HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS REPORTS OF PEOPLE REPLACING RUSTED FUEL LINES ON AUDI MODELS. I HAVE NOT MADE A BIG ISSUE OF IT WITH AUDI AS OF YET, ONLY CONTACTED THEM TO THE POINT THAT THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOT REPLACE AS A RECALL. I AM SURPRISED THAT THERE WAS NO PREVIOUS ACTION ON THIS AS IT CREATES A FUEL LEAK THAT CAN BE A SOURCE OF FIRE. MY GUESS IS THAT IF THESE LEAKS WERE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHERE AN EASIER IGNITION SOURCE COULD BE FOUND, THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A BIG FIRE ISSUE AND RECALLED. *NM

  • Summary: RECENTLY PURCHASE A USED 1992 AUDI 100 CS WAGON. WHEN I GOT IT HOME AND IN THE GARAGE, THERE WAS A TERRIBLE GASOLINE ODOR. I NOTICED THE PUDDLE ON THE FLOOR, AND GOT UNDER THE CAR TO CHECK IT OUT. SURE ENOUGH, THERE WAS GAS LEAKING FROM THE FUEL LINES IN MULTIPLE PLACES FROM THE TANK TO THE ENGINE BAY. ALL OF THE LINES ARE SEVERELY RUSTED, TO THE POINT THAT IT HAS SPRUNG LEAKS. IN CHECKING AUDI ONLINE FORUMS, IT SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM, WITH MOST PEOPLE SPLICING IN SECTIONS OF HOSE TO KEEP THEIR CARS RUNNING WITHOUT HAVING A PERSISTENT GAS LEAK. I WAS SUPRISED TO SEE THAT THE ONLY FUEL LINE RECALL ON THESE UNITS WAS 1993 AND 1994 MODELS. LUCKILY, I CAUGHT THIS THING BEFORE THEIR WAS AN IGNITION SOURCE TO CAUSE A FIRE. CURRENTLY, I AM PLANNING ON USING THE EVER POPULAR TUBE SPLICE UNTIL I DECIDE IF I WILL BEND MYSELF A NEW SET OF LINES SINCE REPLACEMENTS SEEM TO BE HARD TO COME BY. *NM

  • Summary: I?VE A 92 AUDI 100 CS QUATRO, VIN [XXX]. IT APPEARS THAT NHTSA RECALL ID 97172000 WOULD COVER THIS CAR, AS THE VIN NUMBER IS IN THE RANGE OF APPLICABLE VEHICLES. AS I WRITE THIS, THE DEALER IS REPLACING THIS PART, THE AIRBAG CONTROLLER, BECAUSE THE DIAGNOSTICS HAS INDICATED THAT IT HAS FAILED. THIS APPEARS TO FIT WITH THIS RECALL. HOWEVER, WHEN I TALK TO THE DEALER (CHECKERED FLAG, VIRGINIA BEACH, VA) AND THE AUDI SERVICE LINE THEY SAY THAT THIS RECALL DOES NOT APPLY TO THIS VEHICLE. BUT THEY CANNOT TELL ME WHY. THEY PLUG IT INTO THE COMPUTER AND IT SAYS IT DOESN'T APPLY. NOBODY CAN TELL ME IF THE RECALL WAS APPLIED. AND THE RANGE ON THE RECALL DOCUMENT SAYS: [XXX] - [XXX] WHICH CERTAINLY SEEMS TO FIT BY VIN NUMBER (SEE ABOVE) MY COMPLIANT ? EITHER THE RECALL IS NOT BEING HONORED OR THE RECALL HAS ALREADY BEEN APPLIED AND NOBODY IN THE AUDI CAN CONFIRM THAT IT HAS BEEN APPLIED. I'VE ONLY HAD THIS VEHICLE FOR A YEAR. SO I CAN'T CONFIRM THAT IT WASN'T APPLIED. HOWEVER, YOUR SYSTEM, SHOULD KEEP TRACK IF A PARTICULAR CAR HAS HAD THE RECALL APPLIED. THE CONSEQUENCES ARE THAT I'VE GOT TO PAY $1300 FOR THE PART AND $300 FOR INSTALLATION. I WOULD LIKE AUDI TO (A) SHOW ME THE RECALL WAS APPLIED OR (B) REFUND ME $1600 (OR SO) FOR THE PART AND LABOR THAT YOU CHARGED ME. *JS INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

This car is great on gas and very reliable. Although I've had some issues with the fuel pump and electrical system, it still runs like a champ! I'm amazed that even with the miles, it drives so well. I make the trip from North Carolina to Baltimore twice a month and it never disappoints. With a full tank of gas, I can even ride around Baltimore for about 200 more miles before refueling. How cool is that?!

  2. Gay Breitenberg 2024-11-07

    Vehicle year: 1992

This is the best used car I have ever owned! It's fast, reliable, handles excellently, and is super comfortable. Plus, it gets great gas mileage. In the seven years that I've owned this car, the only issue I've had was with the passenger power seat control. Other than that, it's just been routine oil changes and gas fill-ups, with one major tune-up.

  3. Kareem Hills 2024-11-04

    Vehicle year: 1992

I can't express how much I love this car! It looks like it could be a 2000 or later model car and it's totally unstoppable in the snow. The 5 spd transmission is smooth as silk and everything still works after almost 20 years and 140k. The oil pressure gauge is a bit testy, but it's not a real mechanical concern as far as I know. I'm definitely keeping this car until it's dead. We're having a blizzard here in NY and I'm excited to go back out and drive around! :)

  4. Jose Dicki 2024-10-26

    Vehicle year: 1992

This car has been amazing! The fit and finish are excellent and even after ten years, there are no rattles, rust or worn seats. It's incredibly comfortable on long trips and always feels secure, even at high speeds. I plan on keeping this car for as long as possible, and I'm sure it will last for at least another 75000 miles.
