Audi S4 problems

audi logo

The Audi S4 is the high performance variant of Audi's compact executive car A4. The original Audi S4, built from 1991 until 1994, was a performance-oriented version of Audi's 100 saloon/sedan. All subsequent S4s since 1997 have been based on the Audi A4; and as the A4 has evolved from one generation to the next, so has the S4.

Like its regular A4 counterpart, all S4 variants have had longitudinally oriented, front-mounted engines. All versions of the S4 have their transmission mounted immediately at the rear of the engine in a longitudinal orientation, in the form of a transaxle, and like all Audi "S" cars, are only available as standard with Audi's quattro all-wheel drive (AWD) system, using a Torsen-based centre differential system. A more powerful internal combustion engine, larger upgraded brakes, firmer suspension, larger wheels, and distinctive sheetmetal, styling clues and badging have always been amongst the many upgrades the S4 receives over its mainstream 100 and A4 siblings. In markets where the even higher-performance Audi RS 4 is not offered, the S4 is the top-of-the-line trim of the A4 family.

A single turbocharged 2.2-litre inline five-cylinder powered the original C4 version, and a 2.7-litre twin turbocharged V6 engine was found in the B5 generation. The B6 and B7 versions shared a common 4.2-litre V8 engine, the first time that a V8 engine was placed in a compact executive car, placing it in direct competition with the BMW M3 (3.2 L inline 6) and Mercedes-Benz C32 AMG (3.2-litre supercharged V6). The B8 generation uses a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine and competed with the BMW 335i, BMW 335i/340i xDrive, and Mercedes-Benz C350. The current B9 generation is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine, with rivals including the BMW M340i xDrive and Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG/Mercedes-AMG C43 4MATIC.

All versions of the S4 have been manufactured at Audi's plant in Ingolstadt, Germany; they are, or have been available as a four-door five-seat saloon and a five-door five-seat Avant (Audi's name for an estate car/station wagon) body styles since the model's inception in 1991. A two-door four-seat Cabriolet (convertible) S4 variant was introduced as part of the B6 and B7 generation A4 lineups. The B8 Cabriolet has now been built off the A5 coupe body style and the "S" variant is marketed under the Audi S5 nameplate.

Common Audi S4 problems

The Audi S4 is known for several common problems that may affect its performance and reliability. One of the most frequently reported issues is poor starter motors, which can lead to the car not starting at all. This problem has been reported to occur in various models of the S4, and the solution is to fit a replacement starter motor.

Another common problem is with the electric windows, where the windows may not go up or down properly. This issue is often caused by a faulty window regulator, which can be fixed by either attempting to repair it or fitting a replacement window regulator.

The air conditioning system in the S4 has also been reported to have problems, particularly with the A/C condenser. If the air conditioning is not blowing out cold air, it may indicate a problem with the condenser, which can be resolved by fitting a replacement A/C condenser.

Headlight condensation is another issue that has been reported to affect the S4, particularly on cold mornings. This problem can be addressed by either leaving the condensed headlights, drilling holes at the bottom of the headlight covers to allow the water to drain out, or purchasing replacement headlights.

Coil pack failure is a common problem in several different Audis, including the S4. This issue can cause the engine to idle roughly and misfire. The solution is to fit a replacement coil pack, which can be a more expensive repair.

In addition to these issues, the S4 has also been reported to have problems with the timing chain tensioner, which can cause the engine to overheat. This issue has been reported to occur in the 2005 model, and the repair cost can be as high as $7,000.

The brakes have also been reported to be a problem in the S4, with some owners reporting that they had to have the brakes repaired at around 16,000 miles. This issue can be caused by faulty parts or drivers who don't brake properly.

Finally, some S4 owners have reported experiencing bucking, which can be a scary experience. This issue has been reported to occur when drivers are forced to brake suddenly and then immediately try to accelerate. The solution to this problem is not yet clear, but some owners have reported that it can be fixed by replacing the mechatronics unit.

In summary, the Audi S4 is known for several common problems that may affect its performance and reliability. These issues include poor starter motors, faulty window regulators, A/C condenser problems, headlight condensation, coil pack failure, timing chain tensioner issues, brake problems, and bucking. While some of these issues can be fixed relatively easily, others can be more expensive and may require more extensive repairs.

  • Date Complaint: 2022-12-30
  • VIN: WAUBGAFL7DA
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: My MMI 5F module went out right after an oil change service on Nov 12, 2022 I called them as soon as I got home to inform Leader automotive in Normal Il. I was told I would not be able to be seen until January 5 2023 at 1:pm. I then called back a few days later and was able to move that appointment to Dec 16 at 10:00am. I paid $179.11for them to inspect and locate the issue: according to leader automotive the 5f module is bad and needs replaced. In my print out it states it is no longer in production. This part # 8RI-035-746-C is my entire control module that controls all my safety sensors, fluid levels, tire pressure, suspension control, navigation, hands free technology etc... I contacted Audi USA via Facebook and asked why the part is no longer in production. Via Instant messenger on Dec 16 2022 I answered all their questions and was told by Audi USA they would get back to me on in 2-3 days. I have heard nothing from them. When you try and call the hold times are 3.5-5 hours. No warning signs that the unit was failing other than the radio would turn on and off. It would not stay on long enough to reset tire pressure etc... after they inspected it it no longer turns on at all. My car is a 2013 Audi S4 that has had all the required maintenance performed by Audi. It has 50K miles on it. Well taken care of. I was told by [XXX] that the part is no longer made. I could search a junk yard to find the part and they will put it in at a cost of $283.50. She also said it sucked that they no longer make the part. I asked if the entire system could be replaced I was told no as she kinda laughed at my question. I asked about the safety of my car now and again she just stated that it sucked for me. • Summary: I took the vehicle into the dealer (Westwood Audi) for a Safety Recall repair as requested by Audi. It was for a Driver Front Airbag Inflator replacement. The work was done but when the car was returned the airbag warning light was on. I went back in to the service department and was told that the airbag module had failed and that the part was no longer available from Audi. An aftermarket part could be installed but I would have to pay for part and the repair. No cost estimate has been given. I called Audi of America and they said that the Dealer told them that they didn't break it so they will not cover the cost of repair. I have owned this car for 20 years and it is in exceptional condition. I took it to the Dealer in perfect condition for an airbag repair and got it back with an air bag warning light on and they say they didn't do it? Now I have a car without functioning airbags. Anything that you can do to help resolve this?

This car was so much fun to drive and I loved it! However, now that it has 75k miles on it, I would be happy to get rid of it and never buy Audi again. Since I first bought it, there have been numerous problems that have added up to be quite outrageous! The original top failed during a rainstorm, causing the car to flood. I spent $9k replacing the control panel and rewiring the car. Unfortunately, the new top hasn't worked for a year and Audi USA is now involved, but still no satisfactory resolution. The starter broke and the car fan wouldn't shut off, draining the battery until I needed a tow to get it repaired. There have been so many other issues!

If you're considering buying a sport model from Audi and you're a bit of an Audi enthusiast, it's important to do your research. I personally own a brand new S4 2018 model, and after just one year, in 2019, all four tires had completely worn out and split. As a lady driver who drives carefully, this was a real shock and made me feel quite nervous about driving. What's more, I was never told upfront that S Sport models require a special alignment that costs double due to a camera sensor, which can also cause tires to have a shorter lifespan. When I brought my S4 in for a second recall service, I was told that my tires were split and worn, and that this was a common issue with most S models. They even suggested that I consider getting a regular A model instead. It's frustrating to hear these things, and I've recently heard a lot of bad news about Audi and disappointments from their clients. One person said that their engine light came on just three days after buying their car, while another said that they started hearing strange noises after just a week. And once the 50,000 mile warranty is up, you'll be paying a substantial amount for parts and services. So, it's worth considering alternatives like BMW, Mercedes, or Porsche. Do your research and make an informed decision.

I owned both a 2014 and 2018 A5 coupé, which I absolutely loved. However, I decided to upgrade to a 2020 S4, and I must say, it lives up to all the positive reviews. The car boasts an impressive amount of power and a luxurious interior. While the sports seats and ride may feel a bit stiff, this is to be expected. However, at highway speeds, the road noise can be quite loud and distracting, which is a shame. Despite having the upgraded sound system, it's not worth the investment for the S4, as the road noise can still overpower it. While this car is perfect for cruising around town or even the track, it's not ideal for extended periods on the freeway. Overall, the S4 is an impressive car that showcases Audi's engineering prowess.

Even after 3.5 years and 44.5k miles, my recent purchase of a used 2005 S4 is such a fantastic drive! I absolutely love the look and performance of this car. The acceleration, braking, handling, and sound are all amazing. It's like driving a tiger in sedan's clothing! It's perfect for my business use, but also allows me to have a blast driving down the coastal highway 1 and setting the top pace for all the 'weekend sport cars'.

I bought this car a few months ago and I'm really enjoying the V8 power and crisp handling. This is my first Audi and I must say, I'm very impressed. The gas mileage is below average, but I knew this going in and I don't think the car should be penalized for it.

I drove the S4 and ended up buying it with the prestige package, rear sport differential, rear side air bags, and silk nappa leather. I must say, it's a much nicer quality car than the BM's I tested. The S4 is both beautiful inside and out. The ride is smooth and the car is quiet, until you unleash the beast under the hood. The S4 handles great and is very fast. I highly recommend this car!

I bought this rocket ship back in April 2000 and it has been the coolest and fastest car ever since! While it may not beat some of the top-of-the-line Ferraris, Porsches, or Maseratis, it is still the fastest and most luxurious sedan out there. When I drove it out of the dealership, I was amazed at how fast it was. The bi-turbo engine is simply wonderful and the interior is as luxurious as all Audis. This is actually my second Audi; my first was a 1996 A4.

I've had my '05 S4 for a year now and put 15000 miles on it. While it's a great car, I still prefer my old '00 model with the bi-turbo. If I hadn't driven that one, I'd be head over heels for this one. The '00 was faster, tighter, and had more torque. This car does consume a lot of gas, especially with the current price of $2.60 per gallon. The '00 was more economical in comparison. The heating and AC in the '05 model can be a bit tricky to adjust. The dealer says it's a new system, but I personally preferred the old one. Only 2 more years left on my lease, though. Overall, it's a great car and I'm happy with it.
