First generation (Type 4G8; 2010)

Initial release

The A7 is in essence a four-door fastback version of the C7-series Audi A6, based on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform. The A7 was released before the more conventional A6 saloon/estate. Both cars share the same core structure, drivetrain, chassis, dashboard and interior, whilst the A7 has its own unique exterior panelwork. It also differs from the A6 in that it uses aluminium for much of its front body structure. The A7 was also the first fastback to appear within the Audi C-platform series since the Avant version of the C2 Audi 100, which was discontinued in 1982. The vehicle was unveiled in Pinakothek der Moderne art museum in Munich on 26 July 2010, and later at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, 2011 New York Auto Show, and Wörthersee Tour 2011 (in Misano Red).

The vehicles went on sale in autumn 2010. Early models include 2.8 FSI (204 PS (150 kW; 201 hp)) with multitronic, 3.0 TFSI quattro (300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp)) with seven-speed S tronic, 3.0 TDI quattro (245 PS (180 kW; 242 hp)) with seven-speed S tronic; followed by 3.0 TDI (204 PS (150 kW; 201 hp)) with multitronic.

The 2011 model year A7 introduces FlexRay high speed databus that controls all the driver assistance systems from the A8, but it adds head-up display and active lane assist. Full LED headlamps with Automatic high beam switching or Audi adaptive light (Xenon) with variable headlight range control. US models went on sale 2012 model year vehicles. Early models include 3.0 TFSI quattro (310 PS (228 kW; 306 hp)) with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Common Audi S7 problems

The Audi S7, a high-performance luxury sedan, is known for its exceptional handling, powerful engines, and comfortable interior. However, like any other vehicle, the S7 has its share of common problems that have been reported by owners.

One of the most common issues with the first-generation Audi S7 is related to the air suspension system. Some owners have reported problems with the suspension failing, resulting in a harsh ride and reduced handling performance. This issue can often be addressed by replacing the air suspension components or the entire system. Another issue that has been reported by some Audi S7 owners is related to the engine oil consumption. Some drivers have reported that their vehicles are consuming excessive amounts of oil, which can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly. This issue can often be resolved by replacing the faulty piston rings or by having the engine rebuilt. Additionally, some owners have reported problems with the fuel injectors on their Audi S7s. This can cause the vehicle to run poorly or to stall altogether. Replacing the fuel injectors or cleaning them may resolve this issue. Finally, some owners have reported problems with the electronic components in their Audi S7s, particularly with the infotainment system and the adaptive cruise control. These issues can often be resolved by having the components replaced or by updating the software.

For the 2013 model year, one common issue with the Audi S7 has been reported to be with the fuel system. Some owners have reported experiencing issues with the fuel pump, which can result in a loss of power or stalling while driving. In some cases, this issue has been resolved by replacing the fuel pump, but in other cases, it may require more extensive repairs. Another issue that has been reported with the 2013 S7 is related to the timing chain. Some owners have experienced timing chain tensioner failure, which can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly. This issue can be particularly concerning, as it may require significant engine repairs or replacement.

For the 2014 model year, one issue that has been reported with the S7 is related to the engine. Some owners have reported experiencing engine misfires or reduced power, which has been attributed to carbon buildup in the intake valves. This can be resolved through cleaning of the valves, but may also require more extensive repairs. Another issue that has been reported with the 2014 S7 is related to the transmission. Some owners have experienced delayed shifting or harsh engagement, particularly in cold weather. This can be addressed through transmission fluid changes or more extensive repairs to the transmission system.

In conclusion, while the Audi S7 is a high-performance luxury sedan with advanced features, it may experience certain issues over time. By staying aware of these common issues and taking steps to address them, owners can help ensure that their S7 remains reliable and continues to provide a smooth driving experience. It is important to consult with a qualified mechanic if any issues are suspected.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-17
  • Date Complaint: 2023-10-17
  • VIN: WAUSFBF28LN
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: TODAY, I was driving my vehicle when I got multiple warnings including a “electrical failure, ABS failure, start stop failure.” I was on a stretch of road where I could not safely remove myself from traffic and was forced to proceed. Within 5 minutes of receiving the error messages my car shutdown and I was unable to control the car. Horrifying experience. By the grace of god I was able to get the vehicle to the side of road where I had to wait for extended period of time to get a tow vehicle that could accommodate my vehicle and have the vehicle towed to my local dealership. I have just learned that what I experienced is a “known problem,” and that there are a massive amount of Audi’s that are impacted by this “alternator issue.” What I also learned due to this widespread problem, parts availability are extremely limited and the waiting period for my car just to get the parts could be in excess of 6-8 weeks. I also learned that the part replacing the failed alternator is the EXACT same alternator in my vehicle presently and there has been no FIX provided so the chances are what I experienced today can most likely occur again once the replaced alternator fails. I never ever what to go through what I went through today ever again.

Stall occurred on a freeway entrance (acceleration lane) in the traffic lane without warning. Approximately 20 minutes before this complete failure of the vehicle, the dashboard warning system provided the following warnings in yellow (meaning the car was drivable): (1) electrical system malfunction! Please contact Service; (2) rear spoiler malfunction; (3) traction control malfunction; and (3) Parking aid malfunction. The vehicle also indicated that the collision avoidance system was not operating and the air conditioning system shut down approximately five minutes before the vehicle completely broke down in the traffic lane. I have received the "rear spoiler malfunction" alert 5+ times in the last year; I asked the dealer to check it; and they said there was no record in the onboard computer of the problem.

Latest positive Audi S7 car reviews

  1. Kellen Farrell 2024-11-29

    Vehicle year: 2016

I've been driving my S7 for two weeks now and it's been an amazing experience. I recently switched from my Porsche 911 as I wanted a more refined driving experience. The S7 is incredibly powerful, yet quiet and nimble, making it a joy to drive. The combination of driving performance, technology, and comfort is truly astonishing and I couldn't be happier with my choice. I've noticed that I get more compliments and stares on my S7 than I ever did on my 911, which is something I really appreciate as a car enthusiast. When people tell me they love my car, I always respond with a smile and say, 'Thank you, I love it too!'.

  2. Ed Cartwright 2024-11-27

    Vehicle year: 2016

I purchased a 2016 S7 in February 2019, just off lease, with 19,400 miles on the clock. After test driving it with two other people waiting to drive it, I decided to buy it. I'm so glad I did! This car is amazing - it's powerful, fast, and comfortable. The active cruise control is a great feature, especially when someone cuts in front of you and slows down. It's definitely better than my wife's 2017 Q5 3.0T V6. If you get one, you won't regret it. However, I change the engine oil every 4000 to 5000 miles, instead of the Audi recommended 10,000 miles. It's cheap insurance considering the cost of twin turbo repairs. I used to have a 2008 Nissan Altima V6 with CVT, which I sold in December 2018 with 172,400 miles on it. I also changed the oil every 4000 miles in that car, and it ran like a top even at highway speeds with passing at over 100 miles per hour. The V6 was strong, and the Audi 4.0 is good too. It now has 33,000 miles on it. The engine is high performance, so I prefer to change the oil frequently. Overall, it's a great car - eye candy with its black color, black optic, black wheels, and black chrome.

  3. Rodolfo Carroll 2024-11-25

    Vehicle year: 2017

Great car! I love it. It's effortless to drive, it's like not even leaving your house. The only problem is that the system interface is outdated.

  4. Dillan Kub 2024-11-25

    Vehicle year: 2014

I absolutely love the fit and finish of this car! The silver leather quilted interior is excellent, and I always get a lot of compliments on it. The acceleration and handling are the best things about it, and they never fail to impress me. The turbos are fabulously smooth and will put you back into your seat. The only downside is the cost of maintenance, which can be quite expensive. However, I still love the car despite this. The value has not decreased much since the last review, so that has leveled off. It's like a 35-year marriage: not perfect, but solid! I still can't part with it, despite the outdated tech - but what it does have works well! Guess I'll keep her!

  5. Hyman McCullough 2024-11-18

    Vehicle year: 2017

I was hoping my S7 would have more of a sports car feel, but as a 51-year-old, I value comfort over cornering ability. During regular driving, it has a smooth and refined character. However, when you push the accelerator, the car's personality suddenly transforms. Overall, it's a fantastic grand tourer that truly shines on long highway journeys. I have no regrets and absolutely love it!
