Audi A4 cabriolet problems

The Audi A4 is a line of luxury compact executive cars produced since 1994 by the German car manufacturer Audi, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The A4 has been built in five generations and is based on the Volkswagen Group B platform. The first generation A4 succeeded the Audi 80. The automaker's internal numbering treats the A4 as a continuation of the Audi 80 lineage, with the initial A4 designated as the B5-series, followed by the B6, B7, B8, and the B9.

The B8 and B9 versions of the A4 are built on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform shared with several models and brands across the Volkswagen Group. The Audi A4 automobile layout consists of a front-engine design, with transaxle-type transmissions mounted at the rear of the engine. The cars are front-wheel drive, or on some models, "quattro" all-wheel drive. The A4 is available as a sedan and station wagon. Historically, the second (B6) and third generations (B7) of the A4 also included a convertible version. For the fourth generation (B8) and onwards, the convertible, along with a new coupé and 5-door liftback variant, was spun-off by Audi into a new nameplate called the Audi A5.

B5 (Typ 8D; 1994)

The first generation Audi A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) debuted in October 1994, with production starting November 1994 and European sales commencing in January 1995 for the 1995 model year. North American sales later began in September 1995 for the 1996 model year. It was built on the Volkswagen Group B5 (PL45) platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat (B5, Typ 3B). It had a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. Many variations of the A4 were also available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan; the Avant (estate/wagon) was introduced in November 1995 and went on sale in February 1996.

Development began in 1988, with the first design sketches being created later that year. By 1991, an exterior design by Imre Hasanic was chosen and frozen for November 1994 production by 1992. The interior design was later finalized in 1992, with pilot production commencing in the first half of 1994. Development concluded in the third quarter of 1994, preceding November 1994 start of production.

A wide range of engines were available in European markets, between 1.6 and 2.8 litres for petrol engines; and a 1.9-litre diesel engine available with Volkswagen Group's VE technology, capable of achieving a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 bhp) or 110 PS (81 kW; 108 bhp). The 2.6 and 2.8-litre V6 engines which had been carried over from the old 80/90 proved popular, although in North America, the 2.8-litre engine was the only V6 that was available there until 1997. A 2.4-liter version was developed especially for the Thai market, where import duty jumped from 60 to 100 percent on cars of over 2,400 cc displacement.

The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8-litre 20v engine with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged 1.8T version produced 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) torque. Moreover, a quattro GmbH special edition of the B5 1.8T was later available in Germany and Europe, for which the engine's power output was raised to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 bhp) and 235 N⋅m (173 lb⋅ft). Five-valve technology was also added to a reengineered V6 family of engines in 1997, starting with the 2.8-litre V6 30v, which now produced 193 PS (142 kW; 190 bhp), followed by a 2.4-litre V6 which was a downsize from the previous 2.6 litre, 150 hp (112 kW) engine, but with a power increase to 165 PS (121 kW; 163 bhp).

Audi also debuted their new tiptronic automatic transmission on the B5 platform, based on the unit Porsche developed for their 964-generation 911. The transmission is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter offering the driver a fully-automatic operation or manual selection of the gear ratios.

The B5 marked Audi's continued move into the midsize luxury car segment, having started this trajectory notably with later model years of the preceding Audi 80/90 B4. Despite initial mechanical problems, overall build and assembly quality were lauded both by the automotive press and within Audi and Volkswagen, and at the time, parent company Volkswagen declared the B5 the company-wide build quality benchmark for all its other models.

Common Audi A4 cabriolet problems

The Audi A4 Cabriolet is known for its understated elegance and solid build quality, but like any vehicle, it has its common faults. Here are some of the most frequently reported problems with the Audi A4 Cabriolet:

  • Broken Load Divider: The Load Divider is a component in the Audi A4 Cabriolet's storage system. When it breaks, the storage compartment may not function correctly. This issue is common in the Audi A4 Cabriolet and can be resolved by replacing the faulty Load Divider.
  • Frame Position Sensor faults: The Frame Position Sensor is responsible for determining the position of the roof. When it fails, the roof may not open or close properly. This issue is common in the Audi A4 Cabriolet and can be resolved by replacing the faulty Frame Position Sensor.
  • Rear screen unbonded from fabric: The rear screen of the Audi A4 Cabriolet's roof may become unbonded from the fabric. This issue is common in the Audi A4 Cabriolet and can be resolved by reattaching the rear screen to the fabric.
  • Water leaks: The Audi A4 Cabriolet's roof mechanism may leak water into the cabin. This issue is common in the Audi A4 Cabriolet and can be resolved by sealing the leaks in the roof mechanism.
  • Fabric has deteriorated with mould spots: The fabric of the Audi A4 Cabriolet's roof may deteriorate and develop mould spots. This issue is common in the Audi A4 Cabriolet and can be resolved by replacing the faulty fabric.
  • Hydraulic leaks: The Audi A4 Cabriolet's roof mechanism may leak hydraulic fluid. This issue is common in the Audi A4 Cabriolet and can be resolved by sealing the leaks in the roof mechanism.
  • Excessive oil consumption: The Audi A4, particularly the 2011 model, is known to consume excessive amounts of oil. This issue has been attributed to faulty piston rings, valve seals, or PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system issues. The fundamental issue lies in the fact that the piston rings let oil escape into the cylinders, causing the engine to burn oil and potentially overheat.
  • Electrical problems: The Audi A6, another model in the Audi family, is known to experience electrical issues with the power windows, door locks, and dashboard display. These problems can be caused by faulty wiring, blown fuses, or malfunctioning control modules. Common electrical component issues in the A6 include non-responsive window switches, intermittent door lock malfunctions, or flickering dashboard lights.
  • Transmission issues: The Audi Q5 is known to experience transmission issues, including rough shifting, slipping gears, and delayed engagement. These problems can be caused by faulty transmission control modules, worn-out clutch plates, or low transmission fluid levels.
  • Convertible top malfunctions: The Audi TT convertible models see a lot of complaints with the convertible top. Some owners have reported difficulties in opening or closing the top or instances where it gets stuck midway. Malfunctioning convertible top motors, faulty sensors, or damaged hydraulic lines can be the cause of these problems.
  • Suspension noise: Owners of the Audi Q7 have reported clunking or knocking noises coming from the vehicle’s suspension system, specifically when going uphill. These noises are caused by premature failure of the front suspension lower arm rear bush because of overheating.
  • Coolant leaks: Coolant leaks are a common problem in Audi A3 models. These leaks can occur due to issues like a damaged radiator, faulty water pump, or a malfunctioning coolant hose or connection. Coolant leaks in an Audi are a serious concern – they can lead to engine overheating and thousands of dollars in potential repairs.
  • Brake problems: Certain Audi A8 models have reported frequent brake-related issues. These problems can manifest as squeaking or grinding noises, reduced braking power, or a soft brake pedal. Most owners complain of having to replace their brakes more than usual.
  • Engine misfire: Engine misfires have been reported in some Audi S4 models, leading to rough idling, reduced power, or increased fuel consumption. Faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel injectors are common culprits behind these misfires.

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-19
  • Date Complaint: 2021-12-28
  • VIN: WAUVF78K29A
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: On Sunday December 19, 2021, while driving home the warning light for the battery/alternator flashed on with an associated beep warning. An estimated 30 miles later all electrical and motor functions died while I was in heavy traffic. I was able to pull off onto a narrow shoulder up a steep hill and park. All functions quit, I could not come out of "Park", the emergency brake switch would not release, the emergency flashers did not function. Nothing responded. I called AAA Towing service to be taken to an Audi service repair shop. The towing service had to use a jumper to provide electrical power to release the emergency brake and take the transmission out of "park." The repair service was the "Sport Hous Reno" where the alternator and the battery were replaced. Invoice # 4791, 12-21-2021, total $1,709.12. I do not expect the battery to be covered since it is expendable. However, the alternator malfunction and this model of Audi completely dying placed me in a dangerous situation where I or my family could have been seriously injured. This is not my first Audi, I did have a similar occurrence with another model and when the battery caused a malfunction the Audi computer went in "Limp Mode" and I was able to drive slowly to the dealership. This was not the case, when the electrical system failed it did not go into "Limp Mode," it completely "Died" placing me and my car in a dangerous position.

  • Summary: I bought the car recently and drove it on the freeway, on the way back home I noticed a shaking/Vibration coming from the right side of the vehicle. It made the car very hard to control and staying in one lane was almost impossible. It swerves left to right uncontrollably at random times. I haven't taken it in to any dealership or manufacturer to check it out for me, also there's no warning lights on the dashboard at all. And I believe the owner I bought it from knew of this issue but didn't let me know so I'm really just as in the Blind as well. I don't know what else to do because I can't keep driving the car with uncontrollable force and putting kids in danger or anybody else's.

  • Summary: I HAD JUST PUT $35 IN GASSED THE CAR STILL SAID I NEEDED GAS AND THAT I HAD ZERO MILES LEFT OF GAS I MADE A TRIP THAT WAS ABOUT 45 MILES IN DISTANCE. MY CAR WAS THEN PARKED AND TURNED OFF FOR ABOUT 3 TO 4 HOURS THEN IT HAD TROUBLE STARTING AT FIRST BUT TURNED ON AND I PROCEEDED ONTO THE FREEWAY WHICH WAS ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE PARKING LOT I PARKED INSIDE OF. IT WAS ABOUT 9:00 PM AND THANKFULLY THERE WAS NOT A LOT OF CARS OUT. THE ENTRANCE OF THIS FREEWAY CONSIST OF ONE MEDIUM SIZED STEEP HILL WHICH REMAINS TRAVELING UPWARD ONTO A MOUNTAIN WHEN MY CAR SUDDENLY SHUT OFF MY 3 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND I WERE IN THE CAR AND THANKFULLY WE WERE ON THE LAST LANE DUE TO THE FACT THAT WE WERE BARELY ENTERING THE FREEWAY. I PARKED ON THE RIGHT SIDE SKIRT I HAD JUST REPLACED THAT BATTERY EARLIER THAT WEEK (NO MORE THAN 5 DAY BEFORE). I HAD A SMALL GAS CAN IN MY TRUNK AND HAD SOMEONE GO TO THE GAS STATION AND BRING ME THE GALLON OF GAS WHICH I EMPTIED INTO MY CAR AND IT TURNED ON. AT TIMES THE CAR DOES SMELL LIKE GASOLINE ESPECIALLY IF I JUST PUT GAS. IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW MUCH GAS I FILL UP MY TANK WITH IT WILL INDICATE I HAVE 0 MILES OF GAS IN THE SCREEN AND THE FUEL GAUGE WILL NOT GO BELOW THE MIDDLE INDICATOR AND WILL NEVER SHOW ABOVE 3/4 FULL. MY TPMSA IS ALWAYS INDICATING A PROBLEM WHEN THE I HAVE A MECHANIC SEE IT AND HE ASSURED ME IT'S IN GOOD CONDITION

I ONLY HAVE APPROXIMATELY 70,000 MILES ON THE CAR BECAUSE I DON'T DRIVE IT WITH MY FAMILY ABOARD(BECAUSE OF THE FACTORY INSTALLED TAKATA FRONT PASSENGER ANTI PERSONNEL DEVICE). THE ONLY HELP FROM AUDI WAS IN THE FROM OF A RECOMMENDATION "DO NOT" USE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. IN THE ALMOST A YEAR OF WAITING, NO ONE HAS CONTACTED ME, NOT AOA OR LOCAL DEALER. I CALLED HER TODAY JAN. 8, 2020 AND SCHEDULED A REPAIR ON JAN.13. IT WOULD SEEM THAT I AM NOT A PRIORITY.

  • Remedy: Audi has notified owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag with an alternate remedy part, free of charge. The recall began June 29, 2018. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69R7. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 16V382, 17V032 and 18V004 and includes vehicles that may have had their air bag previously replaced under one of those campaigns.
