Audi A5 problems

The Audi A5 is a series of compact executive coupé cars produced by the German automobile manufacturer Audi since June 2007. The A5 range additionally comprises the coupe, cabriolet, and "Sportback" (a five-door liftback with a fastback roofline) version of the Audi A4 saloon and estate models.

Under Audi's internal platform numbering convention, the A5 is a member of the B-platform series of vehicles, sharing its platform designation with the A4 saloon and Avant. The first generation A5 (Type 8T) is therefore a member of the B8 family, whilst the second generation model (Type 8W6) is based on the B9. Both are derived from the Volkswagen MLB (Modular Longitudinal Matrix) architecture.

First generation (2007)

Initial release

When presented at the March 2007 Geneva Motor Show, the A5 marked Audi's return to the compact executive coupé market since the (B3/B4) Audi 80 based coupé model ended production in 1996. On May 10, 2006, Audi confirmed that the A5 would go into production. The B6/B7 A4 spawned a convertible variant but not a coupé. For the fourth-generation A4 (B8), Audi decided to spin off the cabriolet, along with a new coupé and 4-door fastback sedan, into a nameplate of its own as the A5.

The A5 was the first of the B8 family of vehicles to be released (the others being the A4 and the Q5 crossover SUV), all based on the Audi MLP platform (Modular Longitudinal Platform) which underpin the next generation A6 and A8.

The A5 is the third coupé in Audi's line up, following the second generation TT and the R8. The A5 adopted design elements of the Nuvolari quattro concept car. The A5 debuted with the 3.2 litre FSI V6 engine delivering 195 kW (265 PS; 261 hp).

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-07-06
  • VIN: WAURFAFR1DA
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I was having an issue with my 2013 Audi A5 starting. A call to roadside assistance was able to jump my battery and the car would start and run. However, the same issue kept happening. The EPC warning light would come on and it took a few weeks to get scheduled with a mechanic. I purchased a mobile jump starter myself because I never knew when the car would or wouldn't start. After taking the car to Audi, they found the "transmission coolant valve failing internally causing coolant to migrate up connector - this is causing a short which is draining the battery. If not fixed it will continue to deplete the batter. Recommend replacing valve and and connector". [2023 Audi Inspection Report.pdf] This was verified by another mechanic who did the work and shared the faulty, corroded transmission pump connector and leaking valve. [photo: 2023 Corroded connector Transmission Coolant Valve.jpg; 2023 Transmission Coolant Valuve and connector.jpg] I won't speculate about the potential outcomes of such a failure, but I was told by my mechanic before I brought it in that I should no longer jump the car, because if what Audi found was correct, I could at minimum cause a full failure of the car's electrical system or a fire could start and recommended that I tow the car in for repair, which is what I did. An internet search shows this isn't a unique or isolated issue. Audi owners over the past 7+ years have been experiencing the same issue with the transmission coolant seeping into electrical components, causing shorts and electrical problems like mine. [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] This pump and its proximity to electrical components is a dangerous risk to drivers not aware that what appears as a simple dead battery, could in fact be one jump start away from disaster. Latest negative Audi A5 car reviews

  1. Grant Littel 2025-05-29

    Vehicle year: 2019

The car was pretty, but it became too cramped for my liking. I found the heavy and long doors to be a hassle when getting in and out of parking spaces, and I missed having an easy-to-use touchscreen. While the Google GPS was cool, over time it became impractical for me as I didn't need to see information so far to the left and right as laid out horizontally on the dash. Unfortunately, the Audi dealer was very inflexible and would not refund the maintenance plan a month after we bought it. However, I am now much happier with my new and much larger Volvo S90, which has Auto Pilot and a huge touch screen similar to the Tesla. It also has a spacious back seat and drives like the Audi, with the same gas mileage. I use the Auto Pilot all the time and no longer have to mess with the Audi mouse, as I can click on my touch screen directly. Additionally, the screen is vertical, so I can see more of what's ahead of me and not waste space like in the Audi screen. Lastly, the Volvo has amazing headlights that turn with auto-bright at night, making night driving feel like day.

  2. Maynard Gaylord 2025-05-10

    Vehicle year: 2016

I rarely write car reviews because I believe that every driver has different preferences. However, I must say that my experience with the 2015 Audi A5 was disappointing. Although the car has a stylish exterior and good engine performance, the interior and controls design did not meet my expectations. I purchased the A5 Premium Plus with the Technology Package. On the positive side, the car has high-quality interior materials and an amazing premium sound. However, the controls are confusing and difficult to navigate, which can be dangerous if you have to look down to find a specific button. The multimedia system controls are located on the center console between the driver and passenger, which can be inconvenient. The voice recognition is poor, even after going through the 5-minute voice training program. The integration with Bluetooth devices is also poor, as I had to constantly turn off and on the Bluetooth on my iPhone for the car to pick it up. The navigation system maps are outdated, with streets that are over 3-years old not showing up on the map. Additionally, there is only one usable cup-holder in the front, which is not very practical. The car lacks touch-screen functionality, and everything is controlled through a joystick in the center console, which can be distracting. If you use Spotify, Pandora, or any other music service through Bluetooth, the system does not allow you to skip tracks with the steering-wheel-mounted controls. You have to use the center console. The steering-wheel controls are track-wheels instead of levers and buttons, which can be very sensitive to the touch. Lastly, the car has no USB ports. Only SD card slot? (Who uses an SD card slot for music anyway?) I got rid of my Audi A5 after just 9 months. It was too uncomfortable and awkward to control. I hope this review helps you.

    Vehicle year: 2010

Parts for a gold toilet may be less expensive, but unfortunately, there are limited mechanics who will work on them. It's worth noting that Audi has settled the class action lawsuit and will not back the timing chains. Additionally, extended warranty companies may find every loophole to not cover these cars. I understand the frustration of having a car that is worth significantly less than what you paid for it, but let's not be too discouraged. We can work together to find a solution that works for you.

Before you consider purchasing this wonderful car, I want to make you aware that the convertible top may need to be replaced after approximately 25,000 miles. Unfortunately, this repair is not covered by the warranty and can cost up to $8,000. However, my dealership was able to negotiate the cost down to $4,000. Despite this issue, I have thoroughly enjoyed driving my 2010 A5 with only 25,000 miles. It has been well-maintained and kept in a garage, so it has not been exposed to any harsh weather conditions. The only other minor issue I have encountered is that the trunk cannot be opened from inside the vehicle. I was originally planning to purchase another Audi, possibly an A7, but I am now considering other options such as BMW, Volvo, and Jaguar. I hope this information helps you make an informed decision, and please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

To fully utilize the electronics of your Audi, you need to use the myAudi app. However, I have been facing issues logging in even after 5 weeks of purchasing my A5. Despite spending hours researching, emailing, and being on hold, the app's failure is a known issue to Audi Corporate. Unfortunately, the dealer was not informed of these issues. To avoid such problems, I suggest that you ask your dealer to set up the registration for you before leaving the franchise. Audi's response so far has been, 'hold on, we are working on it.' However, I am confident that they will resolve the issue soon. Please do not hesitate to contact your dealer for assistance. The Audi Experience is worth every penny, and I am sure you will enjoy it once the app is up and running.

I've owned the car for about three months now and I must say, I'm completely happy with my purchase! I traded in my 6-year-old Acura TL which I loved, but I was a little worried about going from a 6 cylinder to a 4 cylinder. However, I was worried for no reason as the torque of the 4 cylinder turbo is great and the engine is quieter and smoother than my Acura's 6 cylinder. The A5 has a perfect balance of sportiness and comfort. What's more, for a similar price to a BMW 3 series, I get real leather interior which is a great bonus. I just couldn't force myself to spend 40,000 on a car that didn't have leather. Although I've found a few frustrating things, such as the cup holder only holding one and a half cups and the visor not sliding or extending out to block the sun fully, I still feel like this was a great purchase and I have been very happy with this car!

This car is absolutely stunning! It has maintained its sex appeal even after 2 years. Driving it is so much fun and the design is ahead of its time. It definitely turns heads, just like a celebrity! The six speed manual transmission is powerful, especially in 2nd and 4th gear at the right speed and RPM. The 19” wheels are sporty yet classy and often get mistaken for aftermarket wheels. The car's stance is the most impressive design feature, with its fine European lines and the stance of a muscle car. It is simply beautiful!

The car has a lovely exterior and the interior is the nicest I've ever experienced. Although the gas mileage is not up to the EPA's 21/29 rating, I still feel proud to be seen in this car. I get around 16-17 mpg in town, doing little highway driving, but I'm anything but a leadfoot. The controls/infotainment are a bit complicated, but once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad. The ride can be a bit stiff and rough, especially on some of West L.A.'s pitted streets, but overall it's a great car. While my previous car, a 1996 Mercedes C280, was simpler, I still appreciate the features of this Audi. UPDATE, February 2016: My 3-year lease of this A5 ended in December 2014. Although I said it was probably my last Audi, my wife bought an Audi Q3 compact crossover SUV in January 2015 and I drive that (reluctantly). While I miss the A5's looks, I'm happy to have a reliable and efficient car like the Q3.

This car is amazing! The technology for both the entertainment and driving systems is fantastic. It may take a little while to learn where all the menu items are and what they all do, but it's definitely worth the effort. Plus, I always get envious looks every time I drive it! While some reviews mention that adults can sit in the back seat, it may not be the most comfortable for long rides. However, as the proud owner of this convertible, I don't mind at all!

This is my 4th convertible! I've had a 1964 Ford 500 XL (a big boat of a car), a 1976 Fiat Spyder (a real fun car), a 1997 Sebring (a sedan with a top that went down), and now the Audi 5A. Before the Audi, I had a Rav4 SUV. (Also a couple of station wagons along the way between convertibles.) Stepping up in size is not a problem, but stepping down is taking some getting used to. With less than one month of ownership, I have already taken a trip from the Chicago area around Lake Michigan and a second trip to Door County in WI. I am learning that a 77-year-old body is not as flexible as a 35-year-old one. Getting in, sitting, and driving is not the problem. It is getting out after a few hours of driving. One issue is blocking the sun with the top up or down. The driver sun screen is very small. The Rav4 had a sun screen that, when on the side window, could be slid back to do a good job of blocking the sun from the side. Unfortunately, the Audi does not have this feature. Most of the other 'issues' with the car are due to lack of knowledge and education. Hopefully, these will decrease with time. The biggest problem is finding cheap high-octane gasoline for the car. I pulled into one station where regular was $2.83 and the hi-test was $3.83. I did not buy there, but I'm still paying 40 to 70 cents a gallon more. I have been told mid-grade gasoline should do an adequate job. I will try that since it is only about 20 cents more than regular.
