The Audi A5 is a series of compact executive coupé cars produced by the German automobile manufacturer Audi since June 2007. The A5 range additionally comprises the coupe, cabriolet, and "Sportback" (a five-door liftback with a fastback roofline) version of the Audi A4 saloon and estate models.

Under Audi's internal platform numbering convention, the A5 is a member of the B-platform series of vehicles, sharing its platform designation with the A4 saloon and Avant. The first generation A5 (Type 8T) is therefore a member of the B8 family, whilst the second generation model (Type 8W6) is based on the B9. Both are derived from the Volkswagen MLB (Modular Longitudinal Matrix) architecture.

First generation (2007)

Initial release

When presented at the March 2007 Geneva Motor Show, the A5 marked Audi's return to the compact executive coupé market since the (B3/B4) Audi 80 based coupé model ended production in 1996. On May 10, 2006, Audi confirmed that the A5 would go into production. The B6/B7 A4 spawned a convertible variant but not a coupé. For the fourth-generation A4 (B8), Audi decided to spin off the cabriolet, along with a new coupé and 4-door fastback sedan, into a nameplate of its own as the A5.

The A5 was the first of the B8 family of vehicles to be released (the others being the A4 and the Q5 crossover SUV), all based on the Audi MLP platform (Modular Longitudinal Platform) which underpin the next generation A6 and A8.

The A5 is the third coupé in Audi's line up, following the second generation TT and the R8. The A5 adopted design elements of the Nuvolari quattro concept car. The A5 debuted with the 3.2 litre FSI V6 engine delivering 195 kW (265 PS; 261 hp).

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-07-06
  • VIN: WAURFAFR1DA
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I was having an issue with my 2013 Audi A5 starting. A call to roadside assistance was able to jump my battery and the car would start and run. However, the same issue kept happening. The EPC warning light would come on and it took a few weeks to get scheduled with a mechanic. I purchased a mobile jump starter myself because I never knew when the car would or wouldn't start. After taking the car to Audi, they found the "transmission coolant valve failing internally causing coolant to migrate up connector - this is causing a short which is draining the battery. If not fixed it will continue to deplete the batter. Recommend replacing valve and and connector". [2023 Audi Inspection Report.pdf] This was verified by another mechanic who did the work and shared the faulty, corroded transmission pump connector and leaking valve. [photo: 2023 Corroded connector Transmission Coolant Valve.jpg; 2023 Transmission Coolant Valuve and connector.jpg] I won't speculate about the potential outcomes of such a failure, but I was told by my mechanic before I brought it in that I should no longer jump the car, because if what Audi found was correct, I could at minimum cause a full failure of the car's electrical system or a fire could start and recommended that I tow the car in for repair, which is what I did. An internet search shows this isn't a unique or isolated issue. Audi owners over the past 7+ years have been experiencing the same issue with the transmission coolant seeping into electrical components, causing shorts and electrical problems like mine. [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] This pump and its proximity to electrical components is a dangerous risk to drivers not aware that what appears as a simple dead battery, could in fact be one jump start away from disaster. Latest negative Audi A5 car reviews

  1. Napoleon Lemke 2025-02-11

    Vehicle year: 2018

It's been over 2 years and 35k miles since I got Rhi Rhi, and I'm happy to say that she's still a thrill to drive and looks as good as ever. I've taken good care of her with regular maintenance and new tires, but she hasn't had any major issues with the transmission, engine, brakes, or overheating. The paint still looks fantastic with no fading or major scratches, and the interior is holding up well too. Even my Australian Cattle dog hasn't caused any damage to the rear seats, which still look new thanks to the dog hammock I use. The ride and performance are still great, and I even upgraded to better Continental tires which improved road noise and comfort. The sporback is not only good-looking, but also practical with its spacious hatch that can fit even large items like a 65 gallon aquarium. I've noticed several newer ones in the workplace parking lot, and even my BMW-loving colleague traded in his year-old 3 series for one that looks just like mine. He raves about it often, and I have no regrets about my purchase. Despite my dealership's attempts to get me to upgrade to newer models like the S5, RS 5, or S7, I'm perfectly happy with Rhi Rhi as she is.I had a great experience with my Audi A5 Sportback! My personal mechanic, who specializes in German vehicles, told me that this car is a sweet spot that even Audi didn't realize they had created. The ride and performance are still great, and I even noticed an improvement in road noise and comfort after switching to Continental tires. The Sportback is a good-looking vehicle, and the hatch is a huge plus when it comes to loading items from places like home improvement stores. I've even loaded a 65-gallon aquarium in it! Since I've had mine, I've noticed several newer ones in my company's parking lot, and three people have asked me about mine. One of them even traded in his BMW for one that looks just like mine! As far as car purchases go, this is tied for my favorite out of the 13 I've owned. I've had no regrets or buyer's remorse. However, I did experience some issues with the engine at 61k miles, and unfortunately, the warranty had expired. Despite this, I still had a great experience with my Audi A5 Sportback and would recommend it to others.I hope you are doing well. Take care!

  2. Raven Bailey 2025-02-01

    Vehicle year: 2019

I previously owned the 2013 version of this car, which was fantastic. However, after upgrading to the 2018 model, I found myself asking, 'why did they do that?' Let's start with the good news: the acceleration is a little quicker than the 2013 and the convertible roof operates slightly faster. The new back window is top-notch for a convertible and the new instrument cluster is very easy to configure. The speakerphone is much better and now very nice to use. On the downside, they downgraded the transmission from the super-smooth 8-speed that came with the 2013 and replaced it with a 7-speed that, while quick, is nowhere near as smooth. The GPS now primarily uses voice commands, which can be frustrating. Resorting to manual entry is cumbersome as Audi, for some reason, made this much more difficult. I would not recommend paying extra for the navigation system. They also moved the cup holders much further forward, making them nearly out of reach. And they are tucked under the dashboard slightly so that tall water bottles, for example, no longer fit. The gas tank fills very slowly and shuts off the auto-fill at most pumps. The roof rattles where it meets the driver side window, which is a bit disappointing. The driver side window sometimes stays open a little when you shut the door, but it's easy to raise it all the way with the switch. The glove box has gotten even smaller, and the settings for the heated/cooled seats are less intuitive. The door pockets are smaller too. Overall, the 2018 model has some great features, but there are also some downsides to consider. If you're looking to upgrade, it's worth weighing the pros and cons to decide if it's the right choice for you. This car has some odd restrictions. Unfortunately, the accident avoidance system has false triggers that are more frequent than expected. It can be annoying when the car suddenly slams on the brakes as you back down your driveway if there is a car crossing behind you. Additionally, the gear shifter can be confusing. You push it forward to go in reverse and pull it back to go forward. To put it in park, you have to press a small button. However, this is still a nice car. Although, after a couple of years, the car is constantly displaying warnings that the brake pads need to be replaced, even though it has fewer than 20k miles and the most recent service at the dealer showed that they are still like new. Overall, it has been a frustrating experience, but I still appreciate this car.

I regret my purchase of the Audi due to poor design, quality, and driving experience. The car's only redeeming quality is its stylish appearance. The turbo lag and engagement make driving in stop-and-go traffic miserable, and the brakes lack the confidence of a BMW. The interior feels cheap and is overloaded with plastic. The iPod cable is inconveniently located in the passenger glove box and the sound system's bass rattles every plastic piece. Wind noise is high on the freeway and the seats are uncomfortable. As someone who has owned BMW, Lexus, Jaguar, and Cadillac, I can confidently say that this will be my last Audi. After 8 months of ownership, I was fortunate enough to trade it in for a Cadillac Escalade, which I am much happier with. Although the Audi has a sharp exterior, it is an overall awful car.

This car is a blast to drive in the summer! The acceleration is phenomenal and the ride is incredibly comfortable. You might even find yourself going 100 without even realizing it! The aerodynamic styling is also very sharp and eye-catching. On the downside, the cup holders in front are in a bit of a bad location as they block some of the controls. Additionally, the glove box has lost some space from previous years and can no longer fit the owner's manual. The small storage box to the left of the steering wheel is also too small for the manual. Lastly, the pockets on the door can be a bit awkward to get items in and out of. Overall, though, this car is a joy to drive in the summer (I have yet to own it during a winter season).

The car has unfortunately been in the shop a dozen times over the past 12 months, including this most recent visit which lasted 10 days. Despite these setbacks, the car is a beauty with a great design and a full trunk. While it drives well, there have been some issues with the shifting at slow speeds which can be a safety concern. Although Audi claims there is no issue, the Bluetooth and iPod hook up can be unreliable. While I appreciate the car, I have decided not to purchase another Audi due to the build quality and my negative experience with Audi corporate. However, I must say that my service advisor is a good guy and we always share a laugh whenever I call.

This car is amazing! It has everything you could ever want in a grand touring sports coupe. You'll get looks everywhere you go. The car is super smooth and gets great gas mileage. The A5 is one of the most comfortable cars I have ever owned or ridden in. I highly recommend the sport package because the seats are that much better than the standard offerings. I'm looking forward to many years of bliss with this car.

As someone who used to own a Mercedes-Benz, I initially gave them the first chance when looking for a new car. However, after test driving several models, I was left feeling unsatisfied. It was then that some of my BMW enthusiast friends suggested I take a look at the 335Xi. While it was certainly an upgrade from my previous car, there was still something missing. That's when I decided to give the Audi A5 a chance. Although it was somewhat smaller than the 335Xi, I was able to find the perfect seating position and the car felt like a dream to drive. The cockpit is well-designed and the car has just the right amount of power for me. Overall, I am extremely happy with my decision and plan on keeping this car for a long time.

I'm thrilled to share my experience with Audi, having owned my second Audi (1998 A4) and now the Premium Plus with Sport Package, MMI Nav, and B&O sound system. Audi's interior ergonomics are hands down the best, and this car is no exception. While I was initially disappointed that the higher-end Audi doesn't have a touchscreen like the new VW, the layout is so well-designed that a touchscreen would be awkward and inconvenient. The MMI controls are perfectly laid out, allowing me to push buttons, shift, and focus on the road all at once. The exterior design is a head-turner and blows away the 2011 335xi. I don't really consider MB or Lexus competitors if you go with a 6sp manual tranny. While it may have less HP/Torque than a BMW, it's also considerably less expensive than a 335xi.

There are cars that you ride in and cars that you drive. This Audi A5 is definitely a driver's car. For the best experience, we recommend the quattro version with the ZF 8HP transmission. The car feels solid like a block of granite, with minimal wind noise. In winter, you can expect around 22-25 MPG on premium fuel. The turbo motor feels like a V6 or larger car, with no turbo lag. The interior is nice and cozy, and the heated seats are a must-have in cold climates. The back-up camera is also a great feature, especially since the only thing you see out the back is the sky. The B&O stereo is very nice, but the standard Audi stereo sounds great too. Update 8/23/16: Still love the A5, but there are a few design flaws that can be frustrating. For example, the window drops down when you open the car, which can be problematic in the winter when it sleets out. The window can freeze up and will not drop down, making it difficult to open the door. Additionally, the eighteen-inch low profile tires can be easily damaged by potholes, and water pump failure at 30K can be costly. Despite these issues, the Audi A5 is still a great car to drive and enjoy.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new car! It sounds like it's been a great transition from your previous vehicle. While you had some initial concerns about Audi's quality, it's great to hear that your experience has been reassuring. The 2.OT engine seems to be a great fit for your needs, and the interior and exterior design are both impressive. It's understandable that you were hoping for slightly better fuel economy, but it's great to hear that it hasn't impacted your overall satisfaction with the car. Here's to many more happy years with your new ride!
