Audi S5 problems

audi logo

The Audi S5 is one of two high-performance variants of Audi's A5. It is also the coupé, cabriolet, and five-door fastback sedan versions of the fourth-generation (B8) Audi S4 saloon and estate models.

Like all Audi "S" cars, they are only available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive (4WD) system, here in S5 using a Torsen-based centre diff system.

Most versions of the S5 are manufactured at Audi's plant in Ingolstadt, Germany; they are available as a coupé, cabriolet, and five-door sportback, which was previously not available in North America until the 2018 model year, which was released in the United States in mid 2017. The cabriolets are built at Audi's factory in Neckarsulm, Germany.

  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Our gas tank fuel level sensor is faulty so we can no longer tell how much gas is in our car. The check engine and fuel light are permanently on. This fuel sensor malfunction caused me to run out of gas in the middle of the road. The only way to fix it is to replace the entire gas tank at great expense. We were quoted $3500-$4000. We only have 44K miles on the vehicle.

The pump has not been inspected by anyone other than the mechanics at the repair shop.

Audi S5 2018
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-10
  • Date Complaint: 2023-12-04
  • VIN: WAUB4CF53JA
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I was returning home from visiting family. My drive was approx 140 miles home. The car was running/driving normally when I stopped at a gas station to get a snack. When I came back to my car and attempted to start it, it would not start and had camshaft and crankshaft sensor DTC's. I had to tow the car to my repair shop who determined that the issue was the rocker arms. Despite performing regular maintenance above and beyond what the manufacturer recommends, two rocker arms fell apart inside the engine (needle bearings came out) and sent metal through the engine, causing it to need to be replaced. It was later determined that this was a known issue by Audi, and that they redesigned the rocker arms at a later date. The did not issue a recall or any extended warranty for the effected models. This cost me $16,349 out of pocket to repair. I contacted Audi several times and they refused to rectify the issue. I have came across several others who have experienced the same issue. I have supporting documentation as well as part numbers and dates that I can provide upon request. This type of issue is a saftey concern because this can leave a driver stranded. When this issue happend I was over 75 miles away from home. Luckily I was able to find a tow truck and had the funds to cover the expense of having the car towed back to my home town. However, this issue could leave someone stranded in the middle of nowhere if they werent as lucky as I was.

They attributed it low quality steel being used in the springs Audi is using. Luckily it was a rear spring as I understand a front spring breaking at speed could be catastrophic.

  • Date Complaint: 2023-01-15
  • VIN: WAUC4CF59LA
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: This vehicle has a failed SOS module, which breaks hands free Bluetooth/emergency calling, which is a safety concern. This also breaks parts of the MMI system that were purchased but now do not function as designed. Audi of America does not seem to take this issue very seriously, as there was a recall but it was cancelled, yet there are still thousands of vehicles affected. I have spoken to several people with same make/model/year vehicle as mine and they have the same exact symptoms. AoA has not seemingly corrected supply chain issues with this defective part. I have been waiting 2+ months for a fix, with little to no timeframe of resolution since purchasing the vehicle. I feel that AoA needs to make more of a good-faith effort for this problem, due to length of resolution.

Latest negative Audi S5 car reviews

  1. Gayle Macejkovic 2025-02-26

    Vehicle year: 2015

The car was sold at 68,000 miles. Although it developed problems with the transmission and differential, as well as creaking and squeaking in the body, the repair costs were astronomical, including oil changes and brakes.

  2. Adrain Gibson 2025-02-19

    Vehicle year: 2021

Although the vehicle may look stunning and has impressive acceleration, it may not be the best choice for day-to-day driving. The author has experienced several issues with their vehicle, including airbag and engine thermostat failures, as well as rattles and squeaks. The sound system has also caused problems with buzzing speaker covers. Additionally, the throttle response is laggy, which can be frustrating in city driving. Many people on Audi forums have expressed similar concerns. It's important to note that the author loved their previous 2014 S4 and found it superior in every way except for design and electronics. It's also worth mentioning that the vehicle's fuel economy is around 17mpg in 50/50 city/highway driving.

  3. Mohammed Hand 2025-02-04

    Vehicle year: 2019

I have owned this car for about 4 months. When it is kept in 's' mode and nothing is malfunctioning, it drives really nicely and is much faster than I would have expected. Although it has been back to the dealership for several problems already, the service department seems willing to resolve most of the issues. However, for a car this new (only 12k miles) and as expensive as it was, these problems shouldn't be there. The incessant rattling of things in the dash and the creaking, popping and groaning sounds when I leave my driveway that is somewhat steep or hitting bumps in the road are the worst things that cause me to want to get rid of it. Although the roads are pretty good where I live, it sounds like I am in a 20-year-old car that has had a rough life. I expect some banging from the firm suspension, but this goes far beyond that, especially for this level of a car. Some of the rattling has been resolved in working with the dealership, but inevitably some of it doesn't occur when I leave the car with them. Days where the weather has shifted dramatically will be days that the car has lots of unusual sounds inside. However, outside of the rattling, this car really does perform well. You won't find many other AWD cars that perform the way this car does. It also looks really good inside and out. I still stand by the fact that this car should not have any rattles for the amount of money it cost, but it is a decent sports sedan/coupe. Then you add super intrusive safety features that will actually slam on the brakes if you are moving through close traffic and the systems over-sensitive sensors (Audi pre-sense) think you are going to have an accident, it's just too much. I have lost track of how many times accidents were almost caused by this safety feature; it's too intrusive.I really like the way the car looks both exterior and interior, but I was expecting more for the money. Audi, if you are reading this, there are complaints all over the internet about these problems too.

  4. Monserrat Zemlak 2025-02-02

    Vehicle year: 2019

The crash avoidance technology in this car has some flaws that need to be addressed. During my experience with the car, I found it to be extremely intrusive and on three separate occasions, it nearly caused me to have an accident by suddenly stopping in the middle of an intersection. For example, when I was trying to cross traffic in a common left turn lane and a car came opposite, the Audi would anticipate a head-on collision and stop my car suddenly. I had a 2016 S5 and I found the technology to work just fine. However, the 2018 update changed this technology dramatically, which I did not appreciate.

I have lost track of how many times accidents were almost caused by this safety feature; it's too intrusive.I really like the way the car looks both exterior and interior, but I was expecting more for the money. Audi, if you are reading this, there are complaints all over the internet about these problems too.

The 2018 S5 Audi Sportback is a fantastic car that offers plenty of power for GT driving, ample storage space, excellent tech, and handsome looks. In my experience, it has been one of the most reliable cars I have ever owned, requiring only routine maintenance over the past 6 years. If you don't need track level/competitive performance, the S5 is a great choice and considerably cheaper to purchase and maintain compared to an RS. I know this from personal experience, as I also own an RS5 coupe. The S5 is a significant upgrade from an A level model and is a very dependable car.

I recently upgraded to the Audi S5 from the A5 and I'm thrilled with the difference. The performance is remarkable and the interior stylings, technology and engineering are all top-notch. The 333 hp supercharged engine provides palpable acceleration from a dead stop and the outer stylings are elegant with an understated sportiness, especially the hardtop coupe model. While the technology and dashboard layout can be intimidating at first, it's easy to get the hang of with a little practice. Unfortunately, I've experienced some issues with the paint flaking off in large pieces from the rocker panels on both sides of the car. Despite contacting both the dealer and Audi Canada, I haven't received the support I was hoping for. Despite this, I still highly recommend the Audi S5 for its impressive performance and features.

I really enjoyed reading your review of the 2018 Audi! It sounds like Audi has really stepped up their game with this new generation. The interior design, materials, and switch gear have all been improved, giving the car a higher level of sophistication. The suspension changes are noticeable and provide a more sure-footed feel, which is great to hear. It's also impressive that the understeer tendency has been eliminated when aggressively taking corners. The Turbo engine provides low-end torque, making the car feel much quicker with surges of power that are more instantaneous across the RPM band than the previous generation. The changes to the MMI took a little getting used to, but now it's second nature and accessing information is faster with the new button layout. Inputting information is also easier, especially with the touch handwriting recognition. The MMINavi computer is much faster, with no lag time between screens, and the navigation display is amazingly sharp with accurate directions. The visual cockpit is a joy to use, with information right in front of you where it should be. I'm glad to hear that the multi-gauge setups are also a great feature. Even the B&O stereo system is a step up in sound quality. Overall, it sounds like you made a great choice in upgrading to the 2018 Audi!

This is a luxury sports car, not a car for running errands. As someone who has owned 5 previous Corvettes dating back to the fifties, as well as high-performance passenger cars, I must say that this car is perfection. The supercharged engine and 7-speed multi-clutch transmission are the finest ever and perform their job quietly and perfectly. While it may ride a little rough on the terrible Michigan roads, in Florida or California, where I have driven it, you can just lean back and enjoy.

Hi there! I noticed that you're interested in the 993/996/997, but you also need a back seat that can accommodate a baby seat. Have you considered the S5? It has plenty of room for 3 adults and a large baby seat, making it a very comfortable option. Plus, it has all wheel drive which is perfect for driving in different conditions. If you're interested, you can check out the S5 racing a down hill skier on YouTube - it's really impressive! In terms of stats, the S5 is similar to a 997 4 with a 0-60 of 4.9 compared to the 4.8 of the 997 4, and a 1/4 mile of 13.2 compared to 13/12.9 of the 997 4. While the 6 speed gear box may not be quite as nice as the 997, it's still easy to shift. Overall, the S5 is a great sport GT/luxury sports car that sticks to the pavement and drives great in the rain. I hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions!
