Audi Rs6 problems

The Audi RS 6 is a high-performance variant of the Audi A6 range, produced by the high-performance subsidiary company Audi Sport GmbH, for its parent company Audi AG, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, from 2002 onwards.

The first and second versions of the RS 6 were offered in both Avant and saloon forms. The third and fourth generations are only offered as an Avant.

Overview

The "RS" initials are taken from the German: RennSport – literally translated as "racing sport", and is Audi's ultimate 'top-tier' high-performance trim level, positioned a noticeable step above the "S" model specification level of Audi's regular model range line-up. Like all Audi "RS" models, the RS 6 pioneers some of Audi's newest and most advanced engineering and technology, and so could be described as a halo vehicle, with the latest RS 6 Performance having the equal most powerful internal combustion engine out of all Audi models, with the same horsepower and torque as the physically larger Audi S8 Plus. Unlike the A6 and S6, however, the RS 6's engines in the C5 and C6 iterations have not been shared with any other vehicle in Audi's lineup. However, for the C7 generation, the Audi RS 6 has the same 4.0L bi-turbo V8 engine as the Audi RS 7, with both being positioned at the top of the Audi S and RS range, and detuned variants of the same engines are found in the Audi S8, Audi A8, and Audi S6.

Based on the A6 platform, the RS 6's engines are front-mounted and longitudinally oriented, while the transmission is mounted immediately at the rear of the engine in a longitudinal orientation, in the form of a transaxle. Like all S and RS models, the RS 6 is only available with Audi's 'trademark' Torsen-based quattro permanent four-wheel drive system.

The C5 RS 6 was the fourth model to come out of Audi's private subsidiary company, "quattro GmbH". The first was the Audi RS 2 Avant, from a joint venture between Porsche and Quattro GmbH for the Audi marque. The second was the Audi C4 S6 Plus, produced from April 1996 to July 1997. The third was the 2000 Audi B5 RS 4; the fifth was the 2005 Audi B7 A4 DTM Edition saloon, and the sixth was the 2006 Audi B7 RS 4. The seventh and current (as of January 2010) Quattro GmbH model is the latest Audi C6 RS 6.

Production of the original Audi C5 RS 6 began in June 2002 and ended in September 2004. The second Audi C6 RS 6 was introduced at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. The original RS 6 (C5) was the first Audi RS variant exported to North America, while the C6 and C7 RS 6 were only sold in Europe, with the C8 RS 6 again being offering in North America.

Main rivals for the Audi RS 6 are the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E 55/E 63 AMG.

Audi Rs6

Is the Audi RS6 reliable?

Still, the RS6 Avant is based on Audi's regular A6 model, which we've heard no horror stories about, and because it uses a lot of proven tech from across the range, the RS6 shouldn't be unreliable. Euro NCAP hasn't crash tested the A6 estate, but the standard A6 saloon was awarded a five-star rating back in 2011.

Is Audi RS6 expensive to maintain?

The annual maintenance cost of an Audi RS6 is $1,088.

What is the recall on the Audi RS6 engine?

Audi Recalls RS 6 Avant, RS 7 Because Spills in Backseat Could Cut Power. Audi has issued a recall of over 50,000 cars produced between 2019 and 2022 over an unprotected control module hidden under the rear seats that could, when in contact with liquid, cut engine power and increase the risk of a crash.

How long does RS6 last?

I have heard of quite a few guys with well over 100k on their RS6. Regular maintenance is key to any cars long life, but even more so with the RS6. Mine has 60k trouble free miles.

  • Summary: THIS WAS NOT A BLIZZAK LM-25. IT WAS A BLIZZAK LM-60. TWICE WITHIN A YEAR, I'VE HAD MY REAR TIRE TREAD COMPLETELY SEPARATE FROM THE BEADS, SPLITTING ALL THE WAY AROUND ON THE INNER AND OUTER SIDEWALLS. THE FIRST TIME WAS ON THE PASSENGER REAR WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 75 MPH. IT BLEW OFF AND WENT ROLLING BESIDE AND BEHIND THE VEHICLE OFF TO THE RIGHT HAND SHOULDER. THE CAR WAS PULLED OFF THE FREEWAY WITH SOME DAMAGE OCCURRING TO THE INNER TIRE WHEEL WELL. THE SECOND TIME OCCURRED DRIVING DOWN A RESIDENTIAL ROAD, AFTER RECENTLY EXITING THE FREEWAY. THIS TIME IT WAS THE DRIVER'S REAR. WHILE IT SEPARATED, I HEARD AND FELT IT AND PULLED TO THE CURB. THIS TIME THERE WAS DAMAGE DONE TO THE WHEEL WELL AS WELL AS THE BODY TRIM THE GOES FROM THE FRONT TO THE REAR WHEEL WELLS BENEATH THE DOORS. I HAVE PICTURES.

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-01-15
  • Date Complaint: 2011-08-09
  • VIN: WUAPV54B03N
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: TRANSMISSION WOULD OCCASIONALLY SLIP TO SUCH AN EXTENT THAT WHEN MERGING INTO TRAFFIC I HAD TO PULL TO THE SHOULDER AS I COULDN'T ACCELERATE. THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE CAR THAT HAS MUCH MORE POWER THAN MOST VEHICLES SO UNDER NORMAL OPERATIONS ACCELERATION SHOULD BE QUICK & FAST. THIS FIRST STARTED WITH ONLY 35~40,000 MILES ON THE CAR. ALL RS6 OWNERS BEGIN TO LEARN THAT THE ONLY TWO WEEK POINTS IN THE CAR ARE THE SUSPENSION AND THE TRANSMISSION. THANKS TO THE NHTSA THE VEHICLES WERE FINALLY RECALLED FOR SUSPENSION FAILURES. NOW WE ARE LEFT WITH A SUBSTANDARD TRANSMISSION DESIGN. I RECENTLY PAID $5000 TO HAVE MY TRANSMISSION REBUILT BY A SHOP THAT GUARANTEES TO FIX THE FACTORY DRAWBACKS. PREVIOUSLY I TOOK IT TO THE AUDI DEALER TO NO AVAIL. *TR

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-10-30
  • Date Complaint: 2010-11-01
  • VIN: WUAPV64BX3N
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: 2003 AUDI RS6 (A6 4.2 V8 BITURBO) FUEL TANK DEFECT: THIS COMPLAINT IS IN REGARD TO MY 2003 AUDI RS6 SEDAN. AFTER NOTICING A STRONG SMELL OF FUEL AND FUEL VAPOR IN MY GARAGE THE MORNING AFTER FILLING UP SAID CAR, I IMMEDIATELY TOOK MY VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL AUDI DEALER TO HAVE THE CAR INSPECTED AND DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. I HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED THAT THE CAR'S FUEL TANK IS BROKEN AT THE TOP WHERE THE ROLL OVER VALVE IS BONDED TO THE TANK. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT A 7 YEAR OLD VEHICLE SHOULD NOT HAVE SUCH A POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS PROBLEM SUCH AS A LEAKING FUEL TANK. IN MY RESEARCH I HAVE NOW FOUND THAT A SIMILAR PROBLEM EXISTS WITH OTHER AUDI A6 BASED MODELS - AND THAT THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL SAFETY RECALL (08V-157) FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM, HOWEVER ONLY ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE SMALLER 18.5 GALLON FUEL TANK. THE 21.7 GALLON TANK IN THE AUDI RS6 (4.2 BITURBO QUATTRO) IS MADE OF THE SAME DEFECTIVE MATERIALS AND APPEARS TO HAVE FAILED IN THE SAME WAY AS THE OTHER A6 BASED VEHICLES LISTED IN THE REFERENCED SAFETY RECALL. THIS ISSUE APPEARS TO BE QUITE PREVALENT IN ALL B5 AUDI A6 BASED MODELS (REGARDLESS OF TANK SIZE OR VENT LINE MATERIALS) AND I BELIEVE THAT THE NHTSA SHOULD INVESTIGATE ALL COMPLAINTS AND RECALL ALL 2001-2004 AUDI A6 BASED VEHICLES (INCLUDING THE RS6) AS THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS FAILURE THAT SHOULD NOT HAPPEN IN VEHICLE SYSTEM THAT IS CRUCIAL TO SAFETY. I CONSIDER MYSELF VERY FORTUNATE THAT THE FUEL AND VAPOR LEAK DIS NOT IGNITE AS IN MY GARAGE IS MY HOMES GAS STORAGE WATER HEATER. *TR

  • VIN: WUAPV54B63N
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I AM THE OWNER OF A 2003 AUDI RS6 WITH REPEAT SUSPENSION FAILURES STEMMING FROM AUDI'S DYNAMIC RIDE CONTROL (DRC). THE SYSTEM FIRST BEGINS LOSING HYDRAULIC PRESSURE, THEN SLOWLY LEAKS THE FLUID OUT OF THE LINKED DAMPER SYSTEM UNTIL THE CAR IS IN EFFECT RIDING ON THE SPRINGS WITH INADEQUATE DAMPER CONTROL. THE END RESULT IS A VERY POOR DRIVING CAR WITH EXCESSIVE BUMP-STEER AND BOUNCE. IF LEFT UNATTENDED, IT RESULTS IN A UNSAFE DRIVING SITUATION DUE TO THE UNPREDICTABLE HANDLING OF THE CAR. I HAVE PUT 12,000 MILES IN THE CAR IN ONE YEAR AND HAVE HAD THE SHOCKS AND CENTRAL ACCUMULATOR VALVES CHANGED 3 TIMES. I FULLY EXPECT TO BE BACK INTO THE DEALER IN 5,000 MILES OR LESS, AND I JUST PICKED THE CAR UP FROM THE DEALER ON THURSDAY, AUG 14TH. *TR

ROUNDING CURVES AT SPEED OVER EXPANSION JOINTS IS PLAIN DANGEROUS WHEN THE DRC FAILS. THE CAR BOUNCES, WHEELS LOSE CONTACT AND CAR SIDESTEPS. OBVIOUSLY THE FACT THAT IT REPEATEDLY FAILS IN THESE CARS IS THE ISSUE. *TR

Latest positive Audi Rs6 car reviews

  1. Mekhi Sawayn 2024-11-17

    Vehicle year: 2003

This car is a blast to drive! It's incredibly fast on the highway and has great acceleration between 80 mph and 130 mph. While it may not handle slaloms as well as a BMW 5 series due to its forward engine resulting in a large moment of inertia, it's dynamite on those sweeping 120 MPH curves. It's been trouble-free and the all-wheel drive allows for surprisingly easy driving on icy roads. The tires, like on many performance cars, may struggle with potholes (an expensive lesson), but they grip extremely well. It gets 25 mpg on the highway at 60 mph, but in heavy traffic, it gets about 15 mpg (and with that 93 octane fuel needed by the 10:1 compression ratio, it's not cheap).

  2. Hipolito Eichmann 2024-10-02

    Vehicle year: 2003

My S8 was good, but the RS6 is spectacular! While the interior detail is mediocre, the performance is absolutely wonderful. The only downside is that the NAV system requires a new CD halfway from Philly to NY, but that's a small price to pay for such a fantastic car. In fact, I was so impressed with it that I bought two, despite the disappointment with some of the 'old' equipment.

  3. Ward Fahey 2024-09-27

    Vehicle year: 2003

This car is great until I find something faster.

  4. Brenden Blick 2024-09-10

    Vehicle year: 2003

This car is fantastic! It has explosive acceleration, great ergonomics, and excellent comfort. It comfortably seats four people, although the trunk space is a bit small. The audio system and GPS navigation system (although without a map) are excellent. The all-wheel drive is a great addition, especially in wet or snowy weather, and the brakes are superb.

  5. Philip Hills 2024-08-26

    Vehicle year: 2003

This car is truly amazing! It's incredibly reliable and its speed is simply breathtaking. In fact, it's the fastest family road car to be built in more than one model on the road today. With speeds of up to 180 mph, it could easily outpace a Ferrari F60 or a Lamborghini Diablo.
