The Land Rover Range Rover, generally shortened to Range Rover, is a 4x4 luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, a marque and sub-brand of Jaguar Land Rover. The Range Rover line was launched in 1970 by British Leyland and is now in its fifth generation.

Additional models have been launched under the Range Rover name, including the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar.

History

The Rover Company (originator of the Land Rover marque) was experimenting with a larger model than the Land Rover Series in 1951, when the Rover P4-based two-wheel-drive "Road Rover" project was developed by Gordon Bashford. This was shelved in 1958 and the idea lay dormant until 1966, when engineers Spen King and Bashford set to work on a new model.

The first Range Rover prototype was built in 1967 with plate number SYE 157F. The design of the Range Rover was finalised in 1969. Twenty-six Velar-badged engineering development vehicles were built between 1969 and 1970 and were road registered with the number plates YVB151H through to YVB177H.

Though being chassis no. 3, YVB 153H is believed to have been the first off the production line as a vehicle in that colour was urgently required for marketing. (The Range Rover with chassis no. 1 was a green model with the registration "YVB 151H", and is now on exhibition at Huddersfield Land Rover Centre, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire). The Velar name was derived from the Italian "velare" meaning to veil or to cover. Range Rover development engineer Geof Miller used the name as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company was registered in London and produced 40 pre-production vehicles that were built between 1967 and 1970.

The Range Rover was launched in 1970. In the early 1970s, the Musée du Louvre in Paris exhibited a Range Rover as an "exemplary work of industrial design".

In 1971, ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker used the unproven Range Rover to drive from Algeria to Lagos, Nigeria, to set up a recording studio and jam with Fela Kuti. Predating the Paris-Dakar rally the subsequent documentary is replete with such terrain, documenting the vehicle's endurance.

In 1972, the British Trans-Americas Expedition became the first vehicle-based expedition to traverse the Americas from north to south, including traversing the roadless Darién Gap. The specially modified Range Rovers used for this expedition are now on display in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust collection at Gaydon, Warwickshire.

Range Rover sub-brands have been launched. In 2004, Land Rover debuted the Range Rover Sport, based on the Land Rover Discovery platform. Later models received the latest Range Rover platform. In 2011 came the Range Rover Evoque, and in 2017 the Range Rover Velar (re-using the name of the very first, pre-production Range Rovers).

Common Land rover Range rover problems

Based on complaints from owners of Land Rover Range Rover cars, several common problems have been identified:

  • Transmission Problems: Range Rovers are known to experience transmission issues, which can result in warning lights, transmission fluid leaks, erratic shifts, and difficulties accelerating in certain gears. Land Rover has issued recalls in the past due to transmission problems.
  • Rust: Despite Land Rover's use of aluminum in their vehicles, rust remains a significant concern, especially in older models. The combination of steel and aluminum in the car's construction can lead to rust issues, particularly in areas where these materials meet. Rust problems are more pronounced in older models and can be exacerbated by exposure to salt on roads during winter.
  • Differential Issues: The differential unit in Range Rovers can be problematic, with reports of rear differentials needing replacement prematurely. Oil starvation can lead to differential whine, potentially causing gear damage if left untreated. Contaminated oil in the differential can be indicated by a glittery appearance, necessitating a costly replacement unit.
  • Engine Problems: Range Rovers often face engine issues, including overheating in early models and various failures in diesel and gasoline units. These problems can range from radiator failures to timing chain issues, all of which can be expensive to repair.
  • Brake Faults: Parking brake faults are common in Range Rovers, with symptoms like screeching, locking up, or failing to release. Issues with the ABS and Traction Control modules have also been reported, posing safety risks to drivers and passengers.
  • Electrical Gremlins: Electrical problems have plagued Range Rovers throughout their lifespan, with issues ranging from faulty switches to complete vehicle shutdowns. Some models have experienced major recalls due to electrical malfunctions, emphasizing the importance of addressing these issues promptly.

These common problems with Land Rover Range Rover cars highlight the need for thorough inspections and maintenance to address these issues proactively and ensure a smoother ownership experience.

Land rover Range rover 2009
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-20
  • Date Complaint: 2024-06-21
  • VIN: SALSK25419A
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: I purchased four Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra tires (255 / 50R 19 107 W XL front and back) from Costco at 2700 Potomac Mill Circle, Woodbridge, VA on [XXX]. These tires were specifically for a 2009 Range Rover Sport HSE. The odometer reading was 105632 at the time of purchase, and the tires were installed on [XXX]. The present mileage as of today is 118233. However, after a mere 12,000 miles, all four tires are cracked along the bead inside the tire, showing the threads/wire. The tires are all torn in the sidewall at the bead above the inside of the rim edge and are non-repairable. There was no damage to the rim, nor any reason the tire might have been lacerated by the rim. The tire failure appeared to have occurred without provocation, and Costco had just conducted maintenance in April 2024. The tires have an 80,000-mile warranty, so I wonder how all four tires have the same issue on the inside of the tire after only 12,000-mileage has been recorded; it has been only two years. If the tires had failed while driving, this could have been catastrophic for me and my family, which could have ended up in the vehicle losing control and possibly loss of life since all four tires are damaged. The only driving is taking my son to school and driving in the local area for food. I had a tire inspection done with Cosco Tire in April 2024, and Firestone identified this issue during a wheel alignment on all four tires in June 2024. I took the vehicle to NTB and had a mechanic look at it, and the only conclusion they stated was that these were defective tires. This could have been an improper service by Costco, which they said was not there back in April 2024. The only warnings I had were the illuminated lamp of the TPMS, the tire pressure monitoring system, and the low-pressure warning for the tire The vehicle was brought to Costco for two inspections regarding the TPMS, and all the TPMS on the tires were working correctly; they could not determine the cause of the lamp. I recently bought a fully loaded Range Rover, but unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with it. After only 1,200 miles, I had to take it back to the dealership due to electrical problems, frame problems, steering column issues, transmission warning lights, and shutdowns, as well as starting problems, among others. It has been a frustrating experience, and I have had to hire two law firms to assist me. Despite my efforts, the issue is still not close to being resolved. I wish Land Rover would have been more helpful, especially considering the amount of money I paid for the car. It's disappointing to know that they are owned by Ford.

"Purchased my first Range Rover HSE 2015 ( six weeks old 3200 miles) and this Friday it goes into the shop for the 6th time. It could have been 40 times (electrical issues) but Land Rover does not have a fix for the Navigation Screen that completely shuts down (43 times and counting). Causing a total shut down of any feature you were using until it reboots. Worse off they knew about this issue and sold me the car without disclosing this. But I have several other electrical issues with this vehicle ( radio malfunction, phone issue, but scariest when my distronic did not activate), the list is longer but you get the point. Dont get me wrong, nicest driving car Ive ever owned, but for the price tag you could do so much better. Whats going to happen when this car is out of warranty, SCARY THOUGHT. Plus Land Rover Corporate is the worst company to deal with. The won't even acknowledge my issues or concerns. My dream car that I waited 45 years to buy, has turned into a nightmare. If your like me and can afford this vehicle... DON'T, get something that is reliable. Worst vehicle purchase of my life. Hope this helps. Your Friend The Honest Business Guy"

I purchased a brand new 2018 HSE full size Range Rover, which unfortunately has experienced some computer problems. Despite being in the dealer three times, the issue has not yet been resolved. Although this has been frustrating, I am confident that the dealership will be able to find a solution and get my vehicle back to its optimal performance. It is worth noting that this is my second Range Rover, and I have always been impressed with the quality of the vehicle.

I love commuting in my vehicle on the freeway because of the height and visibility it provides. Although the Rover maneuvers well on the open road, it can be sluggish going up hills. However, it performs exceptionally well on dirt mountain roads in rain and snow, thanks to its AWD. It's important to note that the cost of driving this car, from gas to repairs to replacement parts, is quite high. In my 30+ years of driving, I've never had to have my car towed in for repair until my Rover...it's been towed twice. Therefore, it's crucial to find a reliable and knowledgeable repair facility, which can be challenging even in an urban setting.

This truck has proven to be unreliable, with frequent breakdowns and costly repairs averaging $2,000.00. Its unique parts are prone to failure, resulting in a total cost of $10,000.00 in repairs within a year. Unfortunately, the blue book value has significantly decreased from its original price of $69,000.00. It is not recommended to purchase this truck due to its high maintenance costs and depreciating value.

You're going to love driving this vehicle! It's incredibly comfortable and handles the road like a dream. The traction is fantastic and the naturally aspirated engine provides plenty of power. Plus, it has a classic look and is highly capable. The only minor issue we've had is a water pump replacement.

I love my Range Rover! Although I had a bad experience initially, Land Rover Corporate helped me out and I was given a brand new Rover at no cost. The performance of my new Range Rover is outstanding and I now understand why people love these vehicles so much. I used to be a Mercedes/BMW luxury driver, but now I feel like I have the best of both worlds. I just hope Jaguar doesn't ruin it in 2006.

If you're considering purchasing this car, please be aware that it has had some maintenance issues in the past. The transmission was replaced at 63,000 miles for $8,000 and the air shocks were replaced at 70,000 miles for $3,000. It has required frequent repairs and I only drive it 5,000 to 6,000 miles per year. However, you can find affordable parts online. I would highly recommend purchasing a warranty if you decide to buy this car. Thank you for considering this vehicle!

I've owned this car for almost a year now and it's been a great experience. The car looks and drives amazingly, with a solid and smooth ride that doesn't feel like you're driving a 3 ton car. I've received many compliments from other riders about the smooth ride. Offroading is a breeze with this car. However, I have had a few minor issues with the car, considering the price. For instance, my backup camera has reset a few times, causing the image to reverse and the lines that show where you're heading to disappear. Also, when the Nav screen is up, it's difficult to know what station you're listening to, which can be frustrating. The voice activation system is not very efficient and I can't seem to find any POI's. Lastly, the seat heater in the back is labeled blue and red, but it doesn't cool like the front seats, which is a bit disappointing.

The only problem you may encounter is with the motor in the steering column, which can go bad after 100 miles, making it difficult to drive as the steering wheel will not telescope out and down. However, please note that this is a common issue and the motor may be on backorder for months. Other than that, I absolutely love everything else about this SUV!
