The Land Rover Range Rover, generally shortened to Range Rover, is a 4x4 luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, a marque and sub-brand of Jaguar Land Rover. The Range Rover line was launched in 1970 by British Leyland and is now in its fifth generation.

Additional models have been launched under the Range Rover name, including the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar.

History

The Rover Company (originator of the Land Rover marque) was experimenting with a larger model than the Land Rover Series in 1951, when the Rover P4-based two-wheel-drive "Road Rover" project was developed by Gordon Bashford. This was shelved in 1958 and the idea lay dormant until 1966, when engineers Spen King and Bashford set to work on a new model.

The first Range Rover prototype was built in 1967 with plate number SYE 157F. The design of the Range Rover was finalised in 1969. Twenty-six Velar-badged engineering development vehicles were built between 1969 and 1970 and were road registered with the number plates YVB151H through to YVB177H.

Though being chassis no. 3, YVB 153H is believed to have been the first off the production line as a vehicle in that colour was urgently required for marketing. (The Range Rover with chassis no. 1 was a green model with the registration "YVB 151H", and is now on exhibition at Huddersfield Land Rover Centre, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire). The Velar name was derived from the Italian "velare" meaning to veil or to cover. Range Rover development engineer Geof Miller used the name as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company was registered in London and produced 40 pre-production vehicles that were built between 1967 and 1970.

The Range Rover was launched in 1970. In the early 1970s, the Musée du Louvre in Paris exhibited a Range Rover as an "exemplary work of industrial design".

In 1971, ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker used the unproven Range Rover to drive from Algeria to Lagos, Nigeria, to set up a recording studio and jam with Fela Kuti. Predating the Paris-Dakar rally the subsequent documentary is replete with such terrain, documenting the vehicle's endurance.

In 1972, the British Trans-Americas Expedition became the first vehicle-based expedition to traverse the Americas from north to south, including traversing the roadless Darién Gap. The specially modified Range Rovers used for this expedition are now on display in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust collection at Gaydon, Warwickshire.

Range Rover sub-brands have been launched. In 2004, Land Rover debuted the Range Rover Sport, based on the Land Rover Discovery platform. Later models received the latest Range Rover platform. In 2011 came the Range Rover Evoque, and in 2017 the Range Rover Velar (re-using the name of the very first, pre-production Range Rovers).

Common Land rover Range rover problems

Based on complaints from owners of Land Rover Range Rover cars, several common problems have been identified:

  • Transmission Problems: Range Rovers are known to experience transmission issues, which can result in warning lights, transmission fluid leaks, erratic shifts, and difficulties accelerating in certain gears. Land Rover has issued recalls in the past due to transmission problems.
  • Rust: Despite Land Rover's use of aluminum in their vehicles, rust remains a significant concern, especially in older models. The combination of steel and aluminum in the car's construction can lead to rust issues, particularly in areas where these materials meet. Rust problems are more pronounced in older models and can be exacerbated by exposure to salt on roads during winter.
  • Differential Issues: The differential unit in Range Rovers can be problematic, with reports of rear differentials needing replacement prematurely. Oil starvation can lead to differential whine, potentially causing gear damage if left untreated. Contaminated oil in the differential can be indicated by a glittery appearance, necessitating a costly replacement unit.
  • Engine Problems: Range Rovers often face engine issues, including overheating in early models and various failures in diesel and gasoline units. These problems can range from radiator failures to timing chain issues, all of which can be expensive to repair.
  • Brake Faults: Parking brake faults are common in Range Rovers, with symptoms like screeching, locking up, or failing to release. Issues with the ABS and Traction Control modules have also been reported, posing safety risks to drivers and passengers.
  • Electrical Gremlins: Electrical problems have plagued Range Rovers throughout their lifespan, with issues ranging from faulty switches to complete vehicle shutdowns. Some models have experienced major recalls due to electrical malfunctions, emphasizing the importance of addressing these issues promptly.

These common problems with Land Rover Range Rover cars highlight the need for thorough inspections and maintenance to address these issues proactively and ensure a smoother ownership experience.

Land rover Range rover 2009
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-20
  • Date Complaint: 2024-06-21
  • VIN: SALSK25419A
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: I purchased four Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra tires (255 / 50R 19 107 W XL front and back) from Costco at 2700 Potomac Mill Circle, Woodbridge, VA on [XXX]. These tires were specifically for a 2009 Range Rover Sport HSE. The odometer reading was 105632 at the time of purchase, and the tires were installed on [XXX]. The present mileage as of today is 118233. However, after a mere 12,000 miles, all four tires are cracked along the bead inside the tire, showing the threads/wire. The tires are all torn in the sidewall at the bead above the inside of the rim edge and are non-repairable. There was no damage to the rim, nor any reason the tire might have been lacerated by the rim. The tire failure appeared to have occurred without provocation, and Costco had just conducted maintenance in April 2024. The tires have an 80,000-mile warranty, so I wonder how all four tires have the same issue on the inside of the tire after only 12,000-mileage has been recorded; it has been only two years. If the tires had failed while driving, this could have been catastrophic for me and my family, which could have ended up in the vehicle losing control and possibly loss of life since all four tires are damaged. The only driving is taking my son to school and driving in the local area for food. I had a tire inspection done with Cosco Tire in April 2024, and Firestone identified this issue during a wheel alignment on all four tires in June 2024. I took the vehicle to NTB and had a mechanic look at it, and the only conclusion they stated was that these were defective tires. This could have been an improper service by Costco, which they said was not there back in April 2024. The only warnings I had were the illuminated lamp of the TPMS, the tire pressure monitoring system, and the low-pressure warning for the tire The vehicle was brought to Costco for two inspections regarding the TPMS, and all the TPMS on the tires were working correctly; they could not determine the cause of the lamp. I recently purchased a 2020 RR PHEV from an official dealer in Atlanta, GA on 6/18/2020. Unfortunately, the engine light turned on when I arrived home and despite three visits to the dealer service center and the replacement of various parts, the issue persisted. The car is currently undergoing its fourth service in the last month. However, I have been informed that a new hybrid software will be available at the end of September 2020 and that all models of this car worldwide will be recalled for this update. While it has been frustrating to have a new and expensive car in service for so long, I appreciate the dealer's efforts to resolve the issue and look forward to the software update.

I had a bad experience with my wife's truck, a Range Rover. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a lemon. We should have done more research before purchasing it. However, we did enjoy the test drive and thought it was in good condition. After buying it, we discovered issues with the air suspension and had to replace the air bags. We also had trouble with the crank position sensor, which caused the truck to randomly shut down. It was frustrating, but we were able to fix it. Overall, it was not the best experience, but we learned a lot from it.We had the truck towed to a local mechanic that my father knows, and fortunately, it was an easy fix. However, the following weekend, my wife went out with some friends and called me in a panic, saying that the truck had shut down in the middle of the street and was smoking badly. I was frustrated and ready to give up on the truck, but I asked if she had noticed the temperature gauge in the red zone, and she said yes. I was even more worried because she doesn't usually pay attention to the gauges while driving. Luckily, her mother was nearby and a kind stranger helped push the truck to the side of the road. After the smoke cleared, we discovered that one of the top radiator hoses had come loose and popped off. I stayed home while my wife and her mother went to the event. The next day, we drove to where the truck was and I fixed the hose and filled the radiator with antifreeze. However, it started overheating again not long after. To make a long story short, we eventually made it home to NJ from NY after repeatedly stopping to let the truck cool off and refill. Upon inspection, I found a huge hole in the Y connector pipe that connects two upper radiator hoses to the lower radiator hose and the external thermostat housing. The hole was likely a result of overheating. I got it replaced and also replaced the thermostat, but it still overheated.Replaced the water pump, which was surprisingly easy, but unfortunately the overheating issue persisted. I even went as far as drilling out the thermostat from within the housing that doesn't allow for a normal replacement, but the issue still persisted. After some trial and error, I discovered that the head gasket was the root cause of the problem from the beginning, which caused the initial overheating and the loose hose. Although the antifreeze level was always good and there were no leaks, sometimes things just happen. Overall, I think we may have just gotten a lemon, and I wouldn't want anyone else to make the same mistake. After owning it and doing some extensive research, I found that the bad far outweighs the good with this truck. I remember one person even saying, 'It should be illegal to sell this thing.' Sorry for the long story, but I hope it helps. If anything, I would recommend buying a new one with a full lifetime warranty, because apparently even the new ones can be a big pain. You and your dealer will become very acquainted. Thanks for listening.

I purchased a brand new 2005 Range Rover in December 2004. Unfortunately, the differential broke at 45k miles and then again out of warranty at 65k miles. Additionally, the suspension was shot at 70k miles. While the differential cost me 3k to repair, I decided not to fix the suspension and instead opted to add springs and not use the vehicle suspension. Despite the poor service out of warranty, I am confident in my decision to take control of the situation and find a solution that works for me.

Hey there! I just wanted to let you know that while this vehicle may require repairs from time to time, the cost of fixing it can be a bit higher than some other vehicles. But don't worry, with proper maintenance, it can still be a reliable and enjoyable ride!

But 80k to 100k were pretty bad. However, it could drive through 2 feet of snow like a tank and had superior road manners. After 80k miles, it required frequent visits to the shop. Despite its flaws, I loved this car and still miss it. It's important to have tolerance and budget for maintenance and repairs, as the warranty can be pricey and have a deductible.

This SUV has been a reliable, safe, and stylish vehicle with mostly highway miles and a single owner. Since first purchasing in 2004, it has only required three repairs: a cup holder, a sunglasses holder, and an O2 sensor. Routine maintenance includes changing the 0w40 Mobile 1 oil every 5,000 miles, replacing tires, the serpentine belt, and flushing the transmission and coolant. Brakes are also checked regularly. It's important to note that it's best not to take it to a Range Rover dealer, as parts are regularly available at most auto mechanics for half the hourly rate since Ford purchased the company in 2003. I absolutely love this truck and couldn't imagine ever going back to a Tahoe. It has great curb appeal, is safe, and provides the utmost comfort.

This SUV is so much fun to drive, whether you're on the road or off it! I took it out for a spin the weekend I got it and it powered through 2 feet of mud and forest (even snow!) without even a hint of hesitation. When I drove it back on the highway at 130km per hour, it felt just like driving a regular car. The gas mileage in the city is surprisingly good, even for those who aren't particularly environmentally conscious, and on the highway it's great for a vehicle of this size, getting 22.8 mpg.

I really love this thing. It feels very responsive and the comfort is second to none. We have put 25,000 miles on this thing since September and have had no problems so far. My previous vehicles were an 08 Cayenne and an 04 Jeep Wrangler. The Rover doesn't handle as well on the road (it's not a Porsche), but I feel more at ease knowing I am in one of the best off-road vehicles in the market, and it is a lot more comfortable than the Jeep.

I am thrilled with my purchase! Despite some initial challenges with the InControl setup, I am now enjoying all the amazing features of my new truck. I love its unique physical presence and the fact that it's not a common sight on the road. The dealership was able to offer me a 5% discount and even arranged for home delivery, which was a great convenience. Although I previously owned an X7, this truck surpasses it in many ways. I am still experiencing some minor issues with the InControl system, but overall I am very satisfied with my decision. While the fuel economy is not the best, I understand that this is to be expected with a vehicle of this caliber.
