The Land Rover Range Rover, generally shortened to Range Rover, is a 4x4 luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, a marque and sub-brand of Jaguar Land Rover. The Range Rover line was launched in 1970 by British Leyland and is now in its fifth generation.
Additional models have been launched under the Range Rover name, including the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar.
History
The Rover Company (originator of the Land Rover marque) was experimenting with a larger model than the Land Rover Series in 1951, when the Rover P4-based two-wheel-drive "Road Rover" project was developed by Gordon Bashford. This was shelved in 1958 and the idea lay dormant until 1966, when engineers Spen King and Bashford set to work on a new model.
The first Range Rover prototype was built in 1967 with plate number SYE 157F. The design of the Range Rover was finalised in 1969. Twenty-six Velar-badged engineering development vehicles were built between 1969 and 1970 and were road registered with the number plates YVB151H through to YVB177H.
Though being chassis no. 3, YVB 153H is believed to have been the first off the production line as a vehicle in that colour was urgently required for marketing. (The Range Rover with chassis no. 1 was a green model with the registration "YVB 151H", and is now on exhibition at Huddersfield Land Rover Centre, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire). The Velar name was derived from the Italian "velare" meaning to veil or to cover. Range Rover development engineer Geof Miller used the name as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company was registered in London and produced 40 pre-production vehicles that were built between 1967 and 1970.
The Range Rover was launched in 1970. In the early 1970s, the Musée du Louvre in Paris exhibited a Range Rover as an "exemplary work of industrial design".
In 1971, ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker used the unproven Range Rover to drive from Algeria to Lagos, Nigeria, to set up a recording studio and jam with Fela Kuti. Predating the Paris-Dakar rally the subsequent documentary is replete with such terrain, documenting the vehicle's endurance.
In 1972, the British Trans-Americas Expedition became the first vehicle-based expedition to traverse the Americas from north to south, including traversing the roadless Darién Gap. The specially modified Range Rovers used for this expedition are now on display in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust collection at Gaydon, Warwickshire.
Range Rover sub-brands have been launched. In 2004, Land Rover debuted the Range Rover Sport, based on the Land Rover Discovery platform. Later models received the latest Range Rover platform. In 2011 came the Range Rover Evoque, and in 2017 the Range Rover Velar (re-using the name of the very first, pre-production Range Rovers).

Dealer told me to “top it off.” I check weekly and have to refill the coolant tank-now worried vehicle has faulted hoses or radiator and will overheat & catch on fire. There are a high number of owners of this vehicle brand, make, and model that are inquiring online about these safety concerns. Please investigate. Looking forward to a response.

Additionally, the contact stated that the message "Caution - Coolant is Low" was displayed several times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the thermometer and the receptacle were replaced; however, the check engine warning light illuminated while driving 60-65 MPH. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the fourth and fifth cylinders were misfiring due to the engine overheating. The dealer determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The failure mileage was unknown.

Contacted dealer in San Antonio Texas to report the problem they indicated no recalls and they did not seem interested in the matter. The problem has not been confirmed by the dealer. - Summary: I own the above Land Rover Range Rover. While driving on the highway I heard a loud pop and then found that the interior glass panel of the sunroof was completed shattered into thousands of pieces. The sunroof is composed of two pieces of glass. The exterior glass was not affected. I did nothing to cause this to occur. I found reports online of similar occurrences. The sunroof was inspected by my local Range Rover dealer in Jackson, MS who had no explanation of how this happened or could happen. I was told I would be responsible for the repair. It has yet to be repaired.

- Summary: I purchased four Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra tires (255 / 50R 19 107 W XL front and back) from Costco at 2700 Potomac Mill Circle, Woodbridge, VA on [XXX]. These tires were specifically for a 2009 Range Rover Sport HSE. The odometer reading was 105632 at the time of purchase, and the tires were installed on [XXX]. The present mileage as of today is 118233. However, after a mere 12,000 miles, all four tires are cracked along the bead inside the tire, showing the threads/wire. The tires are all torn in the sidewall at the bead above the inside of the rim edge and are non-repairable. There was no damage to the rim, nor any reason the tire might have been lacerated by the rim. The tire failure appeared to have occurred without provocation, and Costco had just conducted maintenance in April 2024. The tires have an 80,000-mile warranty, so I wonder how all four tires have the same issue on the inside of the tire after only 12,000-mileage has been recorded; it has been only two years. If the tires had failed while driving, this could have been catastrophic for me and my family, which could have ended up in the vehicle losing control and possibly loss of life since all four tires are damaged. The only driving is taking my son to school and driving in the local area for food. I had a tire inspection done with Cosco Tire in April 2024, and Firestone identified this issue during a wheel alignment on all four tires in June 2024. I took the vehicle to NTB and had a mechanic look at it, and the only conclusion they stated was that these were defective tires. This could have been an improper service by Costco, which they said was not there back in April 2024. The only warnings I had were the illuminated lamp of the TPMS, the tire pressure monitoring system, and the low-pressure warning for the tire The vehicle was brought to Costco for two inspections regarding the TPMS, and all the TPMS on the tires were working correctly; they could not determine the cause of the lamp. - Summary: This vehicle is a 2023 Range Rover . I took it in to have the winter tires removed and the summer tires installed. Range Rover did a vehicle inspection and it showed the brake pad wear on the front as being a #7 and the rear as a #2. The scale is 1 to 10 , Ten being NO wear or new pads. I have the write up from Range Rover and pictures they took . I also have the bad brake pads that look like they are flaking away. The repair cost was $2,459.97. The service technician told us this was his 5th 2023 large Range Rover he has done so far this year. They also mentioned that they never do brake pads on a 1 year old vehicle ,let alone 5 vehicles so far this year. As expected i called Range Rover support line with NO answers or resolutions. The majority of my wife's travels in this vehicle have my children with her . Not sure if you can notify Range Rover of this issue, I understand they are a foreign company. - Summary: The contact owns a 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Sport. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed a fuel odor around the exterior of the vehicle. In addition, the contact noticed the fuel odor on the interior of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a fractured gasoline fuel tank flange assembly and that the gasoline fuel tank flange assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V635000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The contact stated that due to health issues, the vehicle was parked for a while; however, recently the vehicle was taken for a smog test. The vehicle failed the smog test due to fuel odor and the check engine light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, however the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was taken to another dealer where the vehicle was diagnosed with a fractured fuel tank flange assembly and that the fuel tank flange assembly needed to be replaced. The contact was informed that the recall repair for NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V635000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) was not completed when performed on 03/2022 by the previous dealer. The vehicle was scheduled to be repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 39,554.

Vehicle year: 2018
I recently purchased a used 2016 Range Rover Supercharged LWB in Indus Silver with the Ebony interior. It was originally priced at $130K, but I managed to find it for $72K with only 8,000 miles on it, and it's in perfect condition. The power is impressive, and the cabin is luxurious with supple leather and a huge interior. The massive trunk space is also a plus. The deployable side steps are great for my wife, who is on the shorter side, and the Meridian premium sound system is spectacular. The only downside is that the electronics are quite dated and laggy in terms of response times. However, it does feature Bluetooth for connecting to your smartphone. If you can find a gently used one, you can reduce the huge depreciation hit from a new purchase, which is optimal. I plan on driving this car for a long time and hope that the maintenance costs will be reasonable.

I've noticed that some people have expressed concerns about the build quality and reliability of this car, but I have to disagree. While it is true that this is a 2004 model, I have found it to be a wonderful car since purchasing it used with 77K. I perform all of the maintenance myself, which has proven to be quite affordable. The only major drawbacks for me are the gas mileage and outdated electronics. However, I still love driving it, especially on the highway where I get around 25 mpg. Additionally, the air ride is fantastic! I understand that some people have had issues with the air suspension, but this is a common problem with all luxury vehicles that are over 10 years old.

I took it out for a spin the weekend I got it and it powered through 2 feet of mud and forest (even snow!) without even a hint of hesitation. When I drove it back on the highway at 130km per hour, it felt just like driving a regular car. The gas mileage in the city is surprisingly good, even for those who aren't particularly environmentally conscious, and on the highway it's great for a vehicle of this size, getting 22.8 mpg.

I was initially skeptical, but after conducting some research on the use of these diesels around the world, I became more interested. I was pleasantly surprised to learn about their longevity, off-road capabilities, and the positive feedback from users. With an impressive 25-28 mpg on a 5,000+ lb vehicle, I was thoroughly impressed during my test drive. Despite pushing the engine to its limits with 0-60 and braking tests, it performed exceptionally well. I was informed that these engines can easily last up to 250,000 miles. While some may prefer gas-powered vehicles with the ability to go 0-60 in 4 seconds, I personally prefer this diesel engine. It is clean-burning and provides a luxurious and safe driving experience. Everyone looks at you differently than if you were driving a Lexus (ho-hum, been there done that). This is the best looking large SUV ever made, with gorgeous color combinations. I averaged 22 hwy when in cruise control. The navigation system is simple and the sound system is amazing, with a Harmon Kardon 715 watts and Logic 7. Stop it!!!

I purchased a brand new 2017 Range Rover HSE Long wheel base in September 2017. Despite experiencing odd thuds and clunks from the undercarriage starting in January 2018, I made sure to bring it up to my local dealership in Richmond. Over the course of 5-6 visits, they made multiple attempts to correct and isolate the problem, but unfortunately, the noise became more frequent and worse over time. Despite documentation stating that the noise was present, there was no resolution and I felt disregarded in a manner that was not acceptable for a vehicle that cost $121k. I did purchase the extended warranty on this car initially. At around 49k miles, my car went back to Richmond for a 2 week period of time in which no resolution was made. They opened up a case at JLR (what I was told), and although the noise was present, they said JLR said that this noise was an acceptable thing. Despite having bushings replaced and tightened, nuts tightened, The dealership replaced the bad front and rear sway bar arms, as well as the broken drive shaft that was causing the noise. They assured me that they had test-driven the car for 20 minutes after the repair and did not hear any noise. However, upon receiving the car, I found that the issue persisted. Despite my attempts to contact Land Rover Charleston WV, they have not responded to me. While I do have an extended warranty, the CSR informed me that they could not buy back my car. Although I could pursue legal action under the Lemon Law, I am too exhausted with this company to do so. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend Land Rover/Range Rover to anyone due to my negative experience. It is important to remember that customer service is just as important as the quality of the car itself.V8 Range Rovers are equipped with Dynamic Response, which uses sway bar arms to keep the car level. Despite being a great concept, these sway bar arms have been a known issue since 2005, as evidenced by various threads and research.

Hello! I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2010 Range Rover. Unfortunately, I have had to bring it in to the Hornburg Service center in Los Angeles for warped rotors three times in less than 15,000 miles. The brakes are not worn down, and I am concerned about this recurring issue. I have been informed that my driving habits may be the cause of the rotors warping every 5,000 miles. However, I am surprised by this as my 2008 Range Rover did not have any brake or warped rotor issues in the 22,000 miles I drove it for the year I owned it. I am considering opening a Lemon Law case against Range Rover, as this problem seems to be persistent and cannot be fixed. I am disappointed by these issues, but I hope we can work together to find a solution. Thank you for your time.

I normally don't like to complain, but I wanted to share my experience with this vehicle. Unfortunately, I encountered some electrical issues right after purchasing it with 22k miles, which caused the rover to completely blackout while driving. The dealer has been unable to find or fix the issue, and it has happened twice. Additionally, at 72,000 miles, the engine unexpectedly failed without any warning lights, resulting in a costly $10,000 repair. All repairs for this vehicle can be quite expensive, such as the wipers which cost $300. If you have the budget for it, this vehicle may be a good fit for you. However, if you prefer to avoid being stranded on the side of the road late at night with tractor trailers whizzing by at 75 miles per hour while waiting 2-3 hours for Rover service to arrive, you may want to consider other options. Overall, I would not recommend this vehicle.

As a proud owner of a 2016 CPO Range Rover with 36k miles, I can attest to the numerous problems I've experienced. However, after several trips to the dealership and calls to Land Rover USA, the issue has finally been resolved. If you do decide to purchase a Land Rover, it's highly recommended to invest in an extended warranty. Alternatively, you may want to consider a Lexus or Toyota for a more dependable option.

I've been a proud owner of my Range Rover for 6 months now and have driven around 10,000 miles. During this time, I've had to take it in for 2 major service visits, which required the SUV to stay at the dealer for a combined total of 3 weeks. On the first visit, there was an oil leak in the engine, which was surprising for a brand new vehicle with only 3000 miles. The culprit was a gally plug near the starter. At 9500 miles, the vehicle started showing an error and would not move up or down. It turns out that the compressor had gone bad. Additionally, I had to replace both seals on the main windows and the passenger side mirror had to be replaced altogether. While it's been a bit of a bumpy ride, I'm confident that the dealership will take care of these issues. After all, this is an expensive vehicle and I expect nothing but the best from it.
