The Land Rover Range Rover, generally shortened to Range Rover, is a 4x4 luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, a marque and sub-brand of Jaguar Land Rover. The Range Rover line was launched in 1970 by British Leyland and is now in its fifth generation.

Additional models have been launched under the Range Rover name, including the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar.

History

The Rover Company (originator of the Land Rover marque) was experimenting with a larger model than the Land Rover Series in 1951, when the Rover P4-based two-wheel-drive "Road Rover" project was developed by Gordon Bashford. This was shelved in 1958 and the idea lay dormant until 1966, when engineers Spen King and Bashford set to work on a new model.

The first Range Rover prototype was built in 1967 with plate number SYE 157F. The design of the Range Rover was finalised in 1969. Twenty-six Velar-badged engineering development vehicles were built between 1969 and 1970 and were road registered with the number plates YVB151H through to YVB177H.

Though being chassis no. 3, YVB 153H is believed to have been the first off the production line as a vehicle in that colour was urgently required for marketing. (The Range Rover with chassis no. 1 was a green model with the registration "YVB 151H", and is now on exhibition at Huddersfield Land Rover Centre, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire). The Velar name was derived from the Italian "velare" meaning to veil or to cover. Range Rover development engineer Geof Miller used the name as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company was registered in London and produced 40 pre-production vehicles that were built between 1967 and 1970.

The Range Rover was launched in 1970. In the early 1970s, the Musée du Louvre in Paris exhibited a Range Rover as an "exemplary work of industrial design".

In 1971, ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker used the unproven Range Rover to drive from Algeria to Lagos, Nigeria, to set up a recording studio and jam with Fela Kuti. Predating the Paris-Dakar rally the subsequent documentary is replete with such terrain, documenting the vehicle's endurance.

In 1972, the British Trans-Americas Expedition became the first vehicle-based expedition to traverse the Americas from north to south, including traversing the roadless Darién Gap. The specially modified Range Rovers used for this expedition are now on display in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust collection at Gaydon, Warwickshire.

Range Rover sub-brands have been launched. In 2004, Land Rover debuted the Range Rover Sport, based on the Land Rover Discovery platform. Later models received the latest Range Rover platform. In 2011 came the Range Rover Evoque, and in 2017 the Range Rover Velar (re-using the name of the very first, pre-production Range Rovers).

Common 2016 Land rover Range rover problems

The Land Rover Range Rover 2016 is known for several common problems, including fuel leaks, incorrect fuel level, loss of steering control, and front passenger airbag issues.

Fuel leaks can occur from the fuel rail in the engine bay of some examples made from 5 May 2016 to 31 January 2018. This issue can lead to a new fuel rail being fitted to solve the problem.

Loss of steering control can occur due to a bolt for a knuckle on the lower control arm of the front suspension potentially working loose on some Evoques constructed between 31 March and 25 August 2016. If affected, the vehicle will need to be checked by a Land Rover technician who will replace the necessary parts to eliminate the issue.

Transmission problems are also common with modern and older Range Rover models. A malfunctioning transmission could lead to increased fuel consumption, overloading of the engine, or even a crash. Early signs of a major transmission issue on Range Rovers include warning lights, transmission fluid leak, erratic shifts, and trouble accelerating in some gears.

The Range Rover is also prone to rust, particularly in older models. This is due to the use of aluminum in the production of the cars, which can lead to rust in areas where steel meets aluminum.

Electrical complications are also a common problem, with earlier vehicles having a terrible reputation for electrical faults. One of the most common problems is with the infotainment system, which can crash, freeze, or refuse to turn on. At times, the system would even reset itself randomly.

Leaks are another common problem, with oil leaks being common and coming from almost every part of the engine, transmission, and connected units. Range Rovers also seem averse to retaining coolant, fuel, and other system fluids. If it gets poured into a Range Rover, it will likely leak out somewhere or leak in, similar to window and sunroof seals letting in rain, and the floor, roof, door, and trunk seals.

Steering concerns have also been identified, with potential steering failure due to bolts corroding on the power steering unit. Older cars have also suffered from steering column complaints, with replacement being the cure. Owners have also reported premature steering motor failures, frequent airbag error messages, stereo and Bluetooth button issues, and unnerving noises from the steering shaft.

Lack of power is another common problem, often seen on diesel-fed models, where power can disappear overnight due to blocked EGR or DPF valves. Split hoses can also cause havoc. Low boost pressure can make a Range Rover crawl along, spewing black smoke – not a good look. The gasoline-powered versions don't escape unscathed either, with problems with timing belts, catalytic converters, fuel pumps, and sensors all robbing power.

Suspension bushes are also known to be weak, with some parts needing replacement before expected. Steering problems can also occur due to low tire pressure, a damaged steering rack, low-power steering fluid, and a damaged power steering belt

Negative 2016 Land rover Range rover car reviews

  1. Jayden Beahan 2024-07-07

There are many other options available at this price point that offer better value for money.

  2. Johnson Rutherford 2024-06-12

If you're in the market for a reliable car, it's important to consider all your options. While Land Rovers may look good at the dealership, they have a reputation for being unreliable. As a proud owner of a 2016 CPO Range Rover with 36k miles, I can attest to the numerous problems I've experienced. However, after several trips to the dealership and calls to Land Rover USA, the issue has finally been resolved. If you do decide to purchase a Land Rover, it's highly recommended to invest in an extended warranty. Alternatively, you may want to consider a Lexus or Toyota for a more dependable option.

  3. Geo Spinka 2024-06-08

There are many reviews online about the Range Rover, and before I owned one, I was excited about it too. However, after owning one, I was disappointed with how it drove, the uncomfortable hard leather, and the lack of space in the trunk area. I also experienced several maintenance problems, and even the smallest mechanical fix cost at least $1k every time. Therefore, I cannot recommend this car, despite how beautiful it looks on the outside and the appeal that comes with owning one.

  4. Tanner Mills 2024-04-17

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with my car. It looks great, but unfortunately, I've had some reliability issues with it. I actually ended up trading it in.

Positive 2016 Land rover Range rover car reviews

  1. Jadon Kuhn 2024-10-29

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your Range Rover! It's great to know that you've had a positive experience with Land Rover Treasure Coast for Purchase & Service. Thank you for sharing your recommendation!

  2. Wilbert Leffler 2024-10-22

Although the Range Supercharged is certainly pricey, it delivers on all fronts! It is an absolute treat to drive, with over-the-top elegance and comfort coupled with over 500 HP. The cargo area is fine, even on weekend trips or vacations with the kids, and certainly fine for normal everyday use. We couldn't be happier with the RR!

  3. Ola Pacocha 2024-08-23

This vehicle is amazing, especially when you're off-road. It's a strong Jeep that can outperform even the Land Range Rover.

  4. Dock Beahan 2024-08-10

This car is absolutely spectacular! It's a unique and beautiful limited edition with just one owner and only 9600 miles on the clock.

  5. Sylvan Nienow 2024-08-05

I purchased a 16 Range Rover Autobiography with 32k miles and have since put on 45k miles over 3 years. I have not had to make a single trip to the dealership yet. I even added mods to increase the horsepower from 550 to 650. The only issue I have had is replacing the wearing out/squeaky bushings, which is a wear item, easy to replace and cost very little. Changing the oil yourself with something like Liquid Moly every 5-6k miles instead of the ridiculous 16,500 mile intervals recommended by RR is the trick. Just change the diff and xfer case and transmission service every 30k miles. This is the fastest, most solid, and most comfortable vehicle I've ever had the pleasure to drive. I was considering trading it in now at around 77k miles, but every SUV I test drive now feels like a cheap, plastic rattle-trap piece of junk compared to my 2016 RR Autobiography.
