The Land Rover Range Rover, generally shortened to Range Rover, is a 4x4 luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, a marque and sub-brand of Jaguar Land Rover. The Range Rover line was launched in 1970 by British Leyland and is now in its fifth generation.
Additional models have been launched under the Range Rover name, including the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar.
History
The Rover Company (originator of the Land Rover marque) was experimenting with a larger model than the Land Rover Series in 1951, when the Rover P4-based two-wheel-drive "Road Rover" project was developed by Gordon Bashford. This was shelved in 1958 and the idea lay dormant until 1966, when engineers Spen King and Bashford set to work on a new model.
The first Range Rover prototype was built in 1967 with plate number SYE 157F. The design of the Range Rover was finalised in 1969. Twenty-six Velar-badged engineering development vehicles were built between 1969 and 1970 and were road registered with the number plates YVB151H through to YVB177H.
Though being chassis no. 3, YVB 153H is believed to have been the first off the production line as a vehicle in that colour was urgently required for marketing. (The Range Rover with chassis no. 1 was a green model with the registration "YVB 151H", and is now on exhibition at Huddersfield Land Rover Centre, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire). The Velar name was derived from the Italian "velare" meaning to veil or to cover. Range Rover development engineer Geof Miller used the name as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company was registered in London and produced 40 pre-production vehicles that were built between 1967 and 1970.
The Range Rover was launched in 1970. In the early 1970s, the Musée du Louvre in Paris exhibited a Range Rover as an "exemplary work of industrial design".
In 1971, ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker used the unproven Range Rover to drive from Algeria to Lagos, Nigeria, to set up a recording studio and jam with Fela Kuti. Predating the Paris-Dakar rally the subsequent documentary is replete with such terrain, documenting the vehicle's endurance.
In 1972, the British Trans-Americas Expedition became the first vehicle-based expedition to traverse the Americas from north to south, including traversing the roadless Darién Gap. The specially modified Range Rovers used for this expedition are now on display in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust collection at Gaydon, Warwickshire.
Range Rover sub-brands have been launched. In 2004, Land Rover debuted the Range Rover Sport, based on the Land Rover Discovery platform. Later models received the latest Range Rover platform. In 2011 came the Range Rover Evoque, and in 2017 the Range Rover Velar (re-using the name of the very first, pre-production Range Rovers).

NOW, DOWN THE ROAD AND WITH VERY LIGHT TRAFFIC NEAR, I STARTED INCREASING MY SPEED TO 55-60 TO SEE WHAT WAS WRONG AND AROUND 60 MPH THE VIOLENT SHAKING STARTED. I REDUCED THE SPEED TO 45 MPH. WHILE TRYING TO DIAGNOSE, I STARTED TO INCREASE MY SPEED AND AT 55 MPH I HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD AND IT STARTED SHAKING VIOLENTLY AGAIN. WE DROVE 50-55 MPH ON A HIGHWAY WITH 18 WHEELERS CAREENING AROUND US. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP, WE WERE TOLD THAT IT NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION. NO EXPLANATION WAS GIVEN AS TO WHY WITH A VEHICLE BARELY 5 YEARS OLD AND ONLY HAD 42,000 MILES ACCRUED. WE TOOK IT TO A PRIVATE TRANSMISSION SHOP AND THEY FOUND THE DEFECT. THERE WAS A CRACK ON THE REVERSE PISTON WHICH LAND ROVER WAS APPARENTLY AWARE OF BECAUSE AN UPDATED PISTON WAS MANUFACTURED. ALL WE WOULD LIKE WAS A REFUND FOR THE REPAIRS DONE BUT WE WERE TOLD NO BECAUSE WE DIDN'T GO TO THE DEALERSHIP. I ENGAGED NEUTRAL AND COASTED LUCKILY ENOUGH FOR 100 YARDS TO A PULL IN OFF THE ROAD, AND AWAITED MY AA RECOVERY TO RECOVER THE VEHICLE. UNKNOWINGLY MY CAR HAD MISSED THE LAST SERVICE BY 6,000 MILES, AND THE MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED. HOWEVER I HAVE TAKEN THE MATTER UP DIRECT WITH LANDROVER AND EXPLAINED THAT THE MAIN DEALER HAS ALLAYS SERVICED THE VEHICLE, AND USUALLY GAVE A TELEPHONE CALL/LETTER TO ADVISE THE VEHICLE WOULD NEED A SERVICE BUT HAD NOT DONE SO ON THIS OCCASION. AFTER MUCH PUSHING LANDROVER ARE ONLY CONTRIBUTING 33% TOWARDS THE REPAIR, THEREFORE I HAVE INSTRUCTED THE GARAGE TO RETURN THE PARTS TO ME FOR AN INDEPENDENT ENGINEERS REPORT TO BE CARRIED OUT. AS I BELIEVE THIS IS AN ENDEMIC FAULT AND ALL RR SHOULD BE RECALLED AND NEW PROPSHAFT AND DIFF PARTS FITTED. I really like the uniqueness of the Range Rover--the style is superb if you like to stand out. But please be aware of the maintenance costs--they can be quite expensive. The average visit to the dealership costs about $2000, and the annual checkups range from about $1300-$1100, which are done every 15000 miles. Additionally, there is always something extra to be done while in the shop. It's also important to remember to get spare keys, as all keys are made in England and may take from days to months to get here.

So far so good. This Range Rover was garage kept and pampered at every routine dealer maintenance suggestion before I took over. I continue to do the same and have not been disappointed. It's an expensive vehicle to maintain, but it won't disappoint when called to duty. The vehicle has some quirks, but I've found that in each vehicle I've owned. Nothing is perfect, but this vehicle gets me and my family where we need to go, regardless of the weather, and most importantly, it does so safely. Luxury is one thing, but safety and reliability are top priorities in my book, and that's why I chose the 2002 Range Rover as the chariot of choice.

You have a great vehicle that has been converted to LPG. You've added a sport exhaust to make it sound like a proper V8. Since purchasing it in March of 2007, you haven't had any major problems. Although the electric seats don't work and the rear wash has died, the enjoyment you get when you drive this superb piece of machinery far outweighs these trivial problems. You haven't taken it off-road yet, but hopefully, one day soon you will.

I recently purchased the 2002 Range Rover 4.6HSE Rhino Edition and I couldn't be happier with my decision. Although I was initially concerned about the unique interior design, it has grown on me and adds to the overall charm of the SUV. It truly is the real deal and I was able to get it at a fantastic price. The MSRP was 74, but I was able to purchase it brand new for only 56. It was a no-brainer!

Ever since I pulled out of the dealership with the Range Rover 4.6 HSE, I have never looked back! It is truly a luxury SUV with all the trimmings. The drive is really smooth and overall, it's a very comfortable ride.

I've had this vehicle for a month now. Although the selling dealership was great, I had a few issues with the vehicle. Some interior and exterior plastics fell off, the transmission had a loud whine and clunk when upshifting, and there was a strange clicking noise from the air conditioner. Additionally, two bolts fell off from the steering column and I wasn't sure where they went, both door speakers fell off and I had to glue them back in place, the rear cargo light fell off, and the rubber door seals sagged, letting water in when it rained. Unfortunately, there were many other issues that I don't have space to write about. The vehicle was great on the test drive and the 5-hour drive home, but nothing but problems ever since. I eventually traded the vehicle for a Porsche Cayenne and I don't regret getting rid of it.

I had a bad experience with my wife's truck, a Range Rover. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a lemon. We should have done more research before purchasing it. However, we did enjoy the test drive and thought it was in good condition. After buying it, we discovered issues with the air suspension and had to replace the air bags. We also had trouble with the crank position sensor, which caused the truck to randomly shut down. It was frustrating, but we were able to fix it. Overall, it was not the best experience, but we learned a lot from it.We had the truck towed to a local mechanic that my father knows, and fortunately, it was an easy fix. However, the following weekend, my wife went out with some friends and called me in a panic, saying that the truck had shut down in the middle of the street and was smoking badly. I was frustrated and ready to give up on the truck, but I asked if she had noticed the temperature gauge in the red zone, and she said yes. I was even more worried because she doesn't usually pay attention to the gauges while driving. Luckily, her mother was nearby and a kind stranger helped push the truck to the side of the road. After the smoke cleared, we discovered that one of the top radiator hoses had come loose and popped off. I stayed home while my wife and her mother went to the event. The next day, we drove to where the truck was and I fixed the hose and filled the radiator with antifreeze. However, it started overheating again not long after. To make a long story short, we eventually made it home to NJ from NY after repeatedly stopping to let the truck cool off and refill. Upon inspection, I found a huge hole in the Y connector pipe that connects two upper radiator hoses to the lower radiator hose and the external thermostat housing. The hole was likely a result of overheating. I got it replaced and also replaced the thermostat, but it still overheated.Replaced the water pump, which was surprisingly easy, but unfortunately the overheating issue persisted. I even went as far as drilling out the thermostat from within the housing that doesn't allow for a normal replacement, but the issue still persisted. After some trial and error, I discovered that the head gasket was the root cause of the problem from the beginning, which caused the initial overheating and the loose hose. Although the antifreeze level was always good and there were no leaks, sometimes things just happen. Overall, I think we may have just gotten a lemon, and I wouldn't want anyone else to make the same mistake. After owning it and doing some extensive research, I found that the bad far outweighs the good with this truck. I remember one person even saying, 'It should be illegal to sell this thing.' Sorry for the long story, but I hope it helps. If anything, I would recommend buying a new one with a full lifetime warranty, because apparently even the new ones can be a big pain. After owning two Acuras, I decided to switch to a Range Rover. However, I have encountered some issues with the car such as the handle breaking off when opening the hood, door handles breaking off, and the car's suspension deflating in the cold. Despite these challenges, I have been able to address them and ensure that the car is in top condition. I have spent some money on repairs, but it has been worth it to have such a great car. Overall, I am confident in my decision to own a Range Rover and look forward to many more enjoyable experiences with it.

I replaced the transmission after 13,000 miles, all bulbs blew out, the airbag and drive shaft were replaced, and the electrical system malfunctioned, including the hands-free device. However, I am confident that these issues can be resolved and the vehicle can be restored to its optimal condition.

...unfortunate...I purchased a Range Rover from someone and unfortunately, in less than 24 hours, it caught on fire and burned up on the way to the guys mechanic, with my 3 year old in the car. I didn't even get a chance to insure it, because it was a weekend. I contacted Range Rover, but unfortunately, they were not able to assist me. I even took the seller to court for my down payment back. Surprisingly, he tried to counter sue me for pain and suffering for not receiving the remainder balance, and report my check because I stopped them. Unfortunately, the judge did not rule in my favor, and I lost the fastest $5k ever in history...at least for me. I'm still devastated.
