The Land Rover Range Rover, generally shortened to Range Rover, is a 4x4 luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, a marque and sub-brand of Jaguar Land Rover. The Range Rover line was launched in 1970 by British Leyland and is now in its fifth generation.

Additional models have been launched under the Range Rover name, including the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar.

History

The Rover Company (originator of the Land Rover marque) was experimenting with a larger model than the Land Rover Series in 1951, when the Rover P4-based two-wheel-drive "Road Rover" project was developed by Gordon Bashford. This was shelved in 1958 and the idea lay dormant until 1966, when engineers Spen King and Bashford set to work on a new model.

The first Range Rover prototype was built in 1967 with plate number SYE 157F. The design of the Range Rover was finalised in 1969. Twenty-six Velar-badged engineering development vehicles were built between 1969 and 1970 and were road registered with the number plates YVB151H through to YVB177H.

Though being chassis no. 3, YVB 153H is believed to have been the first off the production line as a vehicle in that colour was urgently required for marketing. (The Range Rover with chassis no. 1 was a green model with the registration "YVB 151H", and is now on exhibition at Huddersfield Land Rover Centre, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire). The Velar name was derived from the Italian "velare" meaning to veil or to cover. Range Rover development engineer Geof Miller used the name as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company was registered in London and produced 40 pre-production vehicles that were built between 1967 and 1970.

The Range Rover was launched in 1970. In the early 1970s, the Musée du Louvre in Paris exhibited a Range Rover as an "exemplary work of industrial design".

In 1971, ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker used the unproven Range Rover to drive from Algeria to Lagos, Nigeria, to set up a recording studio and jam with Fela Kuti. Predating the Paris-Dakar rally the subsequent documentary is replete with such terrain, documenting the vehicle's endurance.

In 1972, the British Trans-Americas Expedition became the first vehicle-based expedition to traverse the Americas from north to south, including traversing the roadless Darién Gap. The specially modified Range Rovers used for this expedition are now on display in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust collection at Gaydon, Warwickshire.

Range Rover sub-brands have been launched. In 2004, Land Rover debuted the Range Rover Sport, based on the Land Rover Discovery platform. Later models received the latest Range Rover platform. In 2011 came the Range Rover Evoque, and in 2017 the Range Rover Velar (re-using the name of the very first, pre-production Range Rovers).

Common 1993 Land rover Range rover problems

The 1993 Land Rover Range Rover, while an iconic and capable off-roader, is known for several common problems that owners have reported over the years. These issues range from mechanical failures to cosmetic concerns and can affect various components of the vehicle.

  • Water pump failures: Another common issue reported by owners is water pump failures, which can occur without warning and leave the driver stranded.
  • Suspension and steering concerns: The 1993 Range Rover's suspension and steering systems can also be problematic. Some owners have reported issues with the steering box, which can cause the vehicle to wander or pull to one side.
  • Interior and exterior cosmetic concerns: The 1993 Range Rover's interior and exterior can also show signs of wear and tear, with common issues including faded paint on the roof and hood, tears in the driver's seat, and cracked and aging wood veneer in the interior.
  • Electrical problems: Electrical issues are also common in the 1993 Range Rover, with some owners reporting problems with the vehicle's lighting systems, including headlights and daytime running lights. These issues can range from simple bulb replacements to more complex wiring problems.
  • Fuel efficiency: The 1993 Range Rover is known for its relatively low fuel efficiency, with some owners reporting an average of just 11 miles per gallon over the last 15,000 miles. This can be a significant concern for those who plan to use the vehicle for long trips or daily commuting.

In summary, the 1993 Land Rover Range Rover is known for several common problems, including issues with its four-wheel drive system, water pump, suspension and steering, interior and exterior cosmetics, electrical systems, and fuel efficiency. While these issues can be frustrating for owners, they are often considered part of the Land Rover ownership experience, and many enthusiasts appreciate the vehicle's unique character and capabilities.

Are old Land Rovers reliable?

Very early Land Rovers, made during the 1960's through the 1980's, were pretty simple and reliable machines. They were rugged and were capable off-road vehicles on-par with many Jeeps and Toyota FJ40 Land Cruisers.

Are Land Rover Range Rovers reliable?

According to Autotrader executive editor Brian Moody, the Range Rover is not the most reliable and faces significantly more problems than other used cars — especially with the electronics. “Used Range Rovers are often less reliable than other types of used cars,” Moody said.

Does Range Rover have engine problems?

All engines are in V6 configuration with common-rail technology and turbochargers. Those units are found in Discovery and Range Rover Sports. The main problem with these motors are failing oil pumps; often leading to inadequate lubrication if the vehicle wasn't used for too long.

How long will a Range Rover engine last?

The Good. With detailed maintenance, routine servicing, and good driving habits, a Range Rover can last between 150,000 and 200,000 miles. This works out to be about ten to thirteen years of service before it requires repairs or breaks down.

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-12-10
  • VIN: SALNY22252A

  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAYS AND INCLINES I NOTICED MY TRUCK ENGINE SLIPPING AND LOSING SPEED...WHEN THE DECENT INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON, I LOOKED INTO THE MANUAL ONLY TO FIND THAT THE MANUAL SHOWS THAT PARTICULAR CONTROL - BUT STATES NOTHING ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION- IT SAYS MY PROBLEM IS THE BRAKES. I TOOK MY TRUCK TO THE BRAKE SHOP AND YES MY BRAKES WERE IN NEED OF ITS SET OF 2ND ROTORS. SO I HAD THAT FIXED. ON MY WAY TO WORK A FEW NIGHTS AFTERWARDS, I WAS DRIVING UP A HILL WHEN MY TRUCK DIED. TRANSMISSION DEAD. MY 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER'S HAS ONLY 69,000 MILES ON IT. IT IS IN NEED OF ROTORS, A BACK WINDOW REGULATOR AND A TRANSMISSION. POWER TRAIN,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-10-19
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING ON A BUSY INTERSTATE HIGHWAY, THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY LOST ALL PROPULSION. AFTER NAVIGATING ACROSS MULTIPLE LANES OF MODERATELY HEAVY TRAFFIC WITH NO POWER, I CAME TO A STOP ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND CALLED FOR ASSISTANCE. ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CLOSEST LAND ROVER DEALER AND THE PROBLEM DIAGNOSED, IT WAS EXPLAINED TO ME THAT THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL HAD FAILED. I'VE SINCE RESEARCHED THIS ISSUE AND FOUND THAT MANY OTHER OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM AND LAND ROVER HAS EVEN ISSUED TECHNICAL BULLETINS REGARDING THIS REPEATED FAILURE. DESPITE THAT, I HAD NEVER BEEN MADE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE BY THE MANUFACTURER DESPITE THAT FACT THAT IT HAS BEEN IN THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT EVERY SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE INTERVAL AND ON MANY OTHER OCCASIONS FOR OTHER WORK. IN FACT, IT WAS IN THEIR SHOP APPROXIMATELY 2,000 MILES PRIOR TO THIS FAILURE FOR A NUMBER OF OTHER WARRANTY RELATED ITEMS AND THIS FAILING MECHANISM WAS NOT DETECTED/FIXED DESPITE THE FACT THAT IT WAS LIKELY CLOSE TO FAILURE AT THAT POINT AND DETECTION OF THE PROBLEM IS POSSIBLE VIA NOTHING MORE THAN A GLANCE AT THE POINT WHERE THE SHAFT AND DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING MEET. I'M HAPPY NO ONE WAS INJURED BUT VERY DISAPPOINTED THIS FAILURE OCCURRED, ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THAT IT OCCURRED 1,000 MILES AFTER THE OEM WARRANTY ON THE VEHICLE EXPIRED WHICH NOW MAKES THIS A FINANCIAL CONCERN FOR ME AS WELL. *NM

THE CAR THEN BEGAN TO DRIFT TO THE RIGHT, I HAD NO STEERING RESPONSE. I SLOWED SINCE I HAD TAKEN MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELATOR. I ENTERED THE BREAKDOWN LANE AND STRUCK A CONCRETE BARRIER AT 40MPH WITH THE RIGHT FRONT OF THE CAR. WE CAME TO A STOP. ALL THREE PEOPLE WERE WEARING SAFETY BELTS. I HAD A MINOR CONCUSSION AND MY DAUGHTER (IN THE RIGHT FRONT PASSANGER SEAT) HAD A SORE NECK AND LOWER BACK PAIN. MY SON, IN THE BACK SEAT, HAD NO INJURIES. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO ROBINSON SERVICE WHERE IT WAS IMMEDIATELY NOTED THAT THE PITMAN ARM BALL JOINT HAD FALLEN OFF. MR. ROBINSON TOLD US OF UP TO 6 OTHER 1993, 1994 RANGE ROVERS (THAT HE HAD SEEN SINCE 11/00) THAT HAD SIMILAR FAILURES. IT WAS ONLY LUCK (LIGHT TRAFFIC, DRY PAYMENT) THAT I OR MY TWO CHILDREN WERE NOT MORE SERIOUSLY HURT OR KILLED. OTHER CARS COULD HAVE EASILY BECOME INVOLVED IN THE ACCIDENT. MR. ROBINSON HAS CHECKED WITH RANGE ROVER AND AS OF TODAY NO RECALLS HAVE BEEN ISSUED ON THIS PROBLEM. I HOPE THAT RANGE ROVER WILL ISSUE A RECALL IN ORDER TO SAVE OTHERS FROM HARM OR DEATH. PLEASE CONTACT MR. ROBINSON FOR DETAILS ON THE OTHER RANGE ROVERS HE HAS SEEN WITH SIMILAR FAILURES. *AKY

Negative 1993 Land rover Range rover car reviews

  1. Jerry Auer 2024-06-16

Hey there! I just wanted to let you know that while this vehicle may require repairs from time to time, the cost of fixing it can be a bit higher than some other vehicles. But don't worry, with proper maintenance, it can still be a reliable and enjoyable ride!

Positive 1993 Land rover Range rover car reviews

  1. Osborne Jenkins 2024-11-28

If you take good care of your Rover, it will take good care of you. I have owned this vehicle for over three years and have only had to replace the battery. The previous owner took good care of it, and I have done the same. I have not experienced any mechanical problems, and the vehicle has enough power and tenacious off-road capabilities. Although I have heard that prices for parts can be expensive, from looking at the receipts on work done, it seems that parts are not the problem. Labor costs can be high, but if you can find a good mechanic who won't gouge you, costs should be about average for a foreign vehicle. If you ever decide you want a real off-road vehicle and not a toy, this is the vehicle for you.

  2. Damion Harvey 2024-09-11

Both vehicles are great for off-roading, but I find myself hopping into this one more often than my newer cars because it's just so much fun to drive. It offers a quiet luxury while still being able to go anywhere!

  3. Kaleigh Schneider 2024-08-04

So far, this vehicle has been an absolute joy to drive! However, with gas prices as high as they are, it can be a bit of a fallback. The handling is smooth on the highway as well as in city driving. It can be a bit rough and tumble on the hills, but that just adds to the fun!

  4. Gene Carroll 2024-08-01

It's British after all, so it may leak and break down from time to time. You know how it is with Lucas electrical (Lucas the Prince of Darkness), just ask any British car mechanic what that means! But despite all that, I absolutely love it! In my opinion, it's the best 4x4 out there! Just a heads up though, the parts can be a bit pricey to replace, almost as much as a Porsche or Volvo. Ouch!

  5. Leonel Keeling 2024-04-25

I really enjoyed the previous reviewer's description of the car as 'unstoppable'. It truly is a great and classic British automobile. Although I am currently driving a very luxurious and mechanically sound LX470 since my Rover rolled over 100k, I still miss my Rover. Fortunately, my 22-year-old son inherited it and, although he complained at first, he is slowly falling in love with it. It seems he too knows what a great car is!
