The Land Rover Range Rover, generally shortened to Range Rover, is a 4x4 luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, a marque and sub-brand of Jaguar Land Rover. The Range Rover line was launched in 1970 by British Leyland and is now in its fifth generation.

Additional models have been launched under the Range Rover name, including the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar.

History

The Rover Company (originator of the Land Rover marque) was experimenting with a larger model than the Land Rover Series in 1951, when the Rover P4-based two-wheel-drive "Road Rover" project was developed by Gordon Bashford. This was shelved in 1958 and the idea lay dormant until 1966, when engineers Spen King and Bashford set to work on a new model.

The first Range Rover prototype was built in 1967 with plate number SYE 157F. The design of the Range Rover was finalised in 1969. Twenty-six Velar-badged engineering development vehicles were built between 1969 and 1970 and were road registered with the number plates YVB151H through to YVB177H.

Though being chassis no. 3, YVB 153H is believed to have been the first off the production line as a vehicle in that colour was urgently required for marketing. (The Range Rover with chassis no. 1 was a green model with the registration "YVB 151H", and is now on exhibition at Huddersfield Land Rover Centre, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire). The Velar name was derived from the Italian "velare" meaning to veil or to cover. Range Rover development engineer Geof Miller used the name as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company was registered in London and produced 40 pre-production vehicles that were built between 1967 and 1970.

The Range Rover was launched in 1970. In the early 1970s, the Musée du Louvre in Paris exhibited a Range Rover as an "exemplary work of industrial design".

In 1971, ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker used the unproven Range Rover to drive from Algeria to Lagos, Nigeria, to set up a recording studio and jam with Fela Kuti. Predating the Paris-Dakar rally the subsequent documentary is replete with such terrain, documenting the vehicle's endurance.

In 1972, the British Trans-Americas Expedition became the first vehicle-based expedition to traverse the Americas from north to south, including traversing the roadless Darién Gap. The specially modified Range Rovers used for this expedition are now on display in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust collection at Gaydon, Warwickshire.

Range Rover sub-brands have been launched. In 2004, Land Rover debuted the Range Rover Sport, based on the Land Rover Discovery platform. Later models received the latest Range Rover platform. In 2011 came the Range Rover Evoque, and in 2017 the Range Rover Velar (re-using the name of the very first, pre-production Range Rovers).

Common 1992 Land rover Range rover problems

The Land Rover Range Rover 1992, also known as the Range Rover Classic, is a beloved vehicle in the luxury automobile community. However, it is not without its common problems. Understanding these issues can help potential buyers make informed decisions when purchasing and maintaining their Range Rover Classic.

  • Transmission: The transmissions in the Classic Range Rover can have potential problems. One common problem is the vehicle being stuck in one gear due to backup in the transmission filter. Routinely changing the transmission filter and fluid can help prevent this issue. Another issue is limited acceleration in the vehicle, which is caused by faulty transmission seals. Replacing the seals can remedy this problem. Finally, if the vehicle is not starting, this may be due to a faulty selector switch. Replacing the selector switch may be the solution to this problem.
  • Cooling Malfunctions: Cooling malfunctions with the cooling system in the Range Rover Classic are fairly common. If a cooling malfunction occurs, it is important to have it diagnosed by a reliable mechanic, and to order the specialized replacement parts needed to fix the problem. The Classic requires specific parts unique to its specifications.
  • Faulty Security System: The second-generation Range Rover, P38, is known for potential issues with the security system. If the security system is triggered in error, it automatically disables the engine of the vehicle, leaving it undrivable. This unique challenge of the P38 can be frustrating for owners.
  • Undercarriage Design: The undercarriage of the P38 is designed in a tricky manner, making it difficult for even veteran mechanics to work on the vehicle. This can lead to increased repair costs and time spent on maintenance.
  • Door Handle Failure: The third-generation Range Rover, L322, is known for troubleshooting involving door handle failure. This can be frustrating for owners and may require replacement of the door handle.
  • Windshield Wiper Issues: The L322 is also known for windshield wiper issues, which can affect visibility and safety while driving. Replacing or repairing the windshield wipers may be necessary to fix this problem.
  • Buzzing Noises: The L322 is prone to buzzing noises in the windshield and scuttle panel. These noises can be distracting and may require repair or replacement of the affected parts.
  • Anti-Roll Bar or Shock Absorbers: The L322 may experience troubleshooting involving anti-roll bar or shock absorbers, which can trigger suspension knocking. This can affect the comfort and safety of the vehicle.
  • Automatic Transmission: The automatic transmission is a key feature of the third-gen Range Rover, but it is also one of its most common problems. This can affect the performance and reliability of the vehicle.

In conclusion, while the Range Rover Classic is a beloved vehicle in the luxury automobile community, it is not without its common problems. Understanding these issues can help potential buyers make informed decisions when purchasing and maintaining their Range Rover Classic. Regular maintenance and repair of these common problems can ensure the safety and comfort of the vehicle for years to come.

Are Land Rover Range Rovers reliable?

According to Autotrader executive editor Brian Moody, the Range Rover is not the most reliable and faces significantly more problems than other used cars — especially with the electronics. “Used Range Rovers are often less reliable than other types of used cars,” Moody said.

Does Range Rover have engine problems?

All engines are in V6 configuration with common-rail technology and turbochargers. Those units are found in Discovery and Range Rover Sports. The main problem with these motors are failing oil pumps; often leading to inadequate lubrication if the vehicle wasn't used for too long.

Are Range Rovers bad for maintenance?

According to data from RepairPal, Range Rovers visit the repair shop almost twice as often as the average vehicle. Plus, around 16% of these visits are for severe issues, which is higher than the average for most car makes.

What are the disadvantages of a Range Rover?

The most commonly reported issues include problems with the electrical system, suspension, and transmission. While there are some clear pros and cons to owning a Range Rover, it's ultimately up to the individual to decide whether the vehicle's luxury and capability are worth the cost of repairs and maintenance.

Negative 1992 Land rover Range rover car reviews

  1. Evan Huels 2024-01-10

Hey there! I just wanted to let you know that while this vehicle may require repairs from time to time, the cost of fixing it can be a bit higher than some other vehicles. But don't worry, with proper maintenance, it can still be a reliable and enjoyable ride!

Positive 1992 Land rover Range rover car reviews

  1. Torey McLaughlin 2024-11-27

I really enjoyed the previous reviewer's description of the car as 'unstoppable'. It truly is a great and classic British automobile. Although I am currently driving a very luxurious and mechanically sound LX470 since my Rover rolled over 100k, I still miss my Rover. Fortunately, my 22-year-old son inherited it and, although he complained at first, he is slowly falling in love with it. It seems he too knows what a great car is!

  2. Rocky Runolfsdottir 2024-09-09

If you take good care of your Rover, it will take good care of you. I have owned this vehicle for over three years and have only had to replace the battery. The previous owner took good care of it, and I have done the same. I have not experienced any mechanical problems, and the vehicle has enough power and tenacious off-road capabilities. Although I have heard that prices for parts can be expensive, from looking at the receipts on work done, it seems that parts are not the problem. Labor costs can be high, but if you can find a good mechanic who won't gouge you, costs should be about average for a foreign vehicle. If you ever decide you want a real off-road vehicle and not a toy, this is the vehicle for you.

  3. Max Feil 2024-07-24

This 1990 County is actually my second RR. The first one I had was a P38, which was a pleasure to drive but unfortunately prone to failures. However, the Classic is a more straightforward and fundamentally sound vehicle. Although there are some niggles here and there, mostly electrical, which is a Lucas trademark, the RR Classic has an eccentric character, just like many of its owners. For example, it is fitted with a factory CD changer but no cup holders or glove box. The styling is iconic and is either immediately recognized or elicits intrigue. These vehicles often get a bad rap, but with proper care, the reliability is relatively high and the driving experience is truly rewarding.

  4. Rick O'Keefe 2024-04-05

It's British after all, so it may leak and break down from time to time. You know how it is! But despite its quirks, I absolutely love it! In my opinion, it's the best 4x4 out there. Just a heads up though, the parts can be a bit pricey to replace, so be prepared for that. Take care!

  5. Harvey Ullrich 2024-02-13

1992 Range Rover Classic. Purchased at 90,000 miles. We installed a new suspension (shocks and springs) and a new heater. Our daughter put on another 30,000+ miles driving back and forth to school. With routine oil changes and a new set of tires, this car is still 'good to go' ANYWHERE!
