The Land Rover Range Rover, generally shortened to Range Rover, is a 4x4 luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, a marque and sub-brand of Jaguar Land Rover. The Range Rover line was launched in 1970 by British Leyland and is now in its fifth generation.
Additional models have been launched under the Range Rover name, including the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar.
History
The Rover Company (originator of the Land Rover marque) was experimenting with a larger model than the Land Rover Series in 1951, when the Rover P4-based two-wheel-drive "Road Rover" project was developed by Gordon Bashford. This was shelved in 1958 and the idea lay dormant until 1966, when engineers Spen King and Bashford set to work on a new model.
The first Range Rover prototype was built in 1967 with plate number SYE 157F. The design of the Range Rover was finalised in 1969. Twenty-six Velar-badged engineering development vehicles were built between 1969 and 1970 and were road registered with the number plates YVB151H through to YVB177H.
Though being chassis no. 3, YVB 153H is believed to have been the first off the production line as a vehicle in that colour was urgently required for marketing. (The Range Rover with chassis no. 1 was a green model with the registration "YVB 151H", and is now on exhibition at Huddersfield Land Rover Centre, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire). The Velar name was derived from the Italian "velare" meaning to veil or to cover. Range Rover development engineer Geof Miller used the name as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company was registered in London and produced 40 pre-production vehicles that were built between 1967 and 1970.
The Range Rover was launched in 1970. In the early 1970s, the Musée du Louvre in Paris exhibited a Range Rover as an "exemplary work of industrial design".
In 1971, ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker used the unproven Range Rover to drive from Algeria to Lagos, Nigeria, to set up a recording studio and jam with Fela Kuti. Predating the Paris-Dakar rally the subsequent documentary is replete with such terrain, documenting the vehicle's endurance.
In 1972, the British Trans-Americas Expedition became the first vehicle-based expedition to traverse the Americas from north to south, including traversing the roadless Darién Gap. The specially modified Range Rovers used for this expedition are now on display in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust collection at Gaydon, Warwickshire.
Range Rover sub-brands have been launched. In 2004, Land Rover debuted the Range Rover Sport, based on the Land Rover Discovery platform. Later models received the latest Range Rover platform. In 2011 came the Range Rover Evoque, and in 2017 the Range Rover Velar (re-using the name of the very first, pre-production Range Rovers).

NORMALLY IT TOOK ONLY SECONDS TO REACH THE CORRECT CYCLE. THE DEALERSHIP HAD IT FOR TWO WEEKS. THE CONTACT ASSUMED THE PROBLEM WAS CORRECTED. SEVERAL MONTHS LATER THE VEHICLE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. THE LIGHT BLINKED INDICATING A FAILURE IN THE SYSTEM TO MAINTAIN THE CORRECT LEVELING CYCLE. THE DEALERSHIP WILL INSPECT THE VEHICLE, ALTHOUGH THEY WERE UNABLE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM THE FIRST TIME. THE DEALER MADE NO ACTUAL REPAIRS AFTER THE FIRST INCIDENT. THE CONTACT ASSUMED THE DEALER ONLY RESET THE SYSTEM, BUT DID NOT ASK FOR A LIST OF SPECIFIC REPAIRS FROM THE DEALERSHIP. *AK

I've always admired the Range Rover from afar and knew that one day I would have to get one. That day finally came and I must say that I love my Range. I've read reviews from other people and, as with any product, you're going to have the good with the bad. However, the Range Rover is definitely 'King of the Hill'. This SUV is in a class all by itself. For example, the next time you take your Range out for a ride, count how many other Ranges you come across. You don't see them all over the place like the so-called comparison SUVs such as the BMW X5, Mercedes M-Class, and Cadillac Escalade. You can pull up to a traffic light and literally count about three BMWs and at least two Escalades, but the Range Rover reigns supreme.

I really enjoy driving my Mark II 4.6 HSE, P38 (“Pegasus” engineering block 38A), Bosh engine from BMW 7, body-on-frame truck with solid-axle suspensions that made the RR king of the off-road, now discontinued after this model. Even my husband, who drives a Prius, loves being a passenger. As a slight 5’4” woman, I find the numerous seat adjustments and massive window space provide awesome visibility. The interior is sporty yet luxurious (I love the wood), and the sound system is great. I feel completely in control driving Los Angeles freeways, especially in the rain, and couldn’t live without the EAS that addressed the roll over issue. I had it totally replaced – no springs. As a dog performance enthusiast, going off-road into the field with a 4-wheel drive is a pleasure. I lower it for my Labrador to hop in. I also love the tailgate feature for unloading gear/stuff and sitting with friends at an event. In my opinion, the key ingredient is to find a mechanic you trust and enjoy working with, someone who could rebuild this truck from the ground up. Mine is terrific. I was told to expect to put $2,500/yr into this vehicle. I purchased it just out of warranty with 60K mi? Currently at 132K (I have a home office. My mechanic says I need to get out more and drive it.) I took out an extended warranty which helped. I might be ahead of the game with cost. I did the headliner last year and recently finally addressed the 3 oil leaks. I'm ready for family road trips. I look every so often, but can’t find a compromial replacement. The LR4 with third seat would give more AC in the back for my dog, but it's hard to find with features and I’d be starting all over again with unknown issues. I just love the look and feel of my Rover.

I absolutely love owning my Range Rover! It's perfect for towing our boat, carrying our canoe on top, and driving comfortably down the highway. My kids and I have a blast taking it off-road, it can go anywhere the tires can get traction. I've been lucky enough to not have any breakdowns with it, but I do maintain my Range Rover religiously. If you're considering buying one, I highly recommend getting a certified Land Rover preowned with a complete warranty. They can be quite expensive to repair and maintain. However, my Range Rover is worth every penny! It's the most fun I've ever had with a vehicle, it can easily carry all my recreational toys, go anywhere up mountains and through rivers, the kids adore it, and it looks fantastic too!

I have owned two Range Rovers so far. The first one was a SE 4.0 1998 model, which was very reliable but underpowered. However, the 4.6 HSE 2000 model is a great improvement with more power and about the same gas mileage as the 4.0. The navigation system is much better than my wife's 740IL. It is a great highway car, superb for towing boats, and unmatched off-road. It is not just a car to drive around town in, but rather it is designed for specific purposes. I highly recommend it for those purposes.

When my parents first purchased this car, I have to admit, I wasn't a fan of its looks. However, as time went by, I grew more and more attached to it. When I finally got my license, my parents generously let me have it. I drove it for a year and put 18,000 miles on it, even though it already had 186k miles on it. Despite its age, it was in pretty good condition, with only some expected wear and tear. Unfortunately, the suspension (EAS fault) broke down, and the cost of repair is probably more than the car's current value. This car was a trusty companion that I used to drive my friends around, haul grain for the horses, and take many family adventures in the cascades. All in all, it was a pretty reliable car.

The Rover's styling is great, but unfortunately, it has not been reliable and has a low resale value. The electronics and interior are outdated compared to other vehicles in its class. Personally, I would not purchase one again. However, we were able to trade it in for a Lexus SUV, which has been a great upgrade in terms of creature comforts and still has towing and off-road capabilities. We are even considering trading in our 745li for a Lexus soon.

In the past 6 months, my car has broken down 3 times and had to be towed to the dealership. This is my third Land Rover, and unfortunately, it has not lived up to my expectations. The first 2 years were fine, but then the car started to fall apart, and it only has 22K miles. I would advise caution when considering these cars. It seems that Land Rover Corp. may not prioritize customer satisfaction and consumer loyalty.

I replaced the transmission after 13,000 miles, all bulbs blew out, the airbag and drive shaft were replaced, and the electrical system malfunctioned, including the hands-free device. However, I am confident that these issues can be resolved with the right expertise and attention.

I love using my Range Rover--it really performs! Whether I'm driving through snow, mud, or sand, or going up hills and down, it never complains. Towing is a breeze thanks to its stable frame. Throughout it all, my RR has been outstanding. The excellent driver visibility and superior lighting make it a real treat to drive.
