The Land Rover Range Rover, generally shortened to Range Rover, is a 4x4 luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, a marque and sub-brand of Jaguar Land Rover. The Range Rover line was launched in 1970 by British Leyland and is now in its fifth generation.
Additional models have been launched under the Range Rover name, including the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar.
History
The Rover Company (originator of the Land Rover marque) was experimenting with a larger model than the Land Rover Series in 1951, when the Rover P4-based two-wheel-drive "Road Rover" project was developed by Gordon Bashford. This was shelved in 1958 and the idea lay dormant until 1966, when engineers Spen King and Bashford set to work on a new model.
The first Range Rover prototype was built in 1967 with plate number SYE 157F. The design of the Range Rover was finalised in 1969. Twenty-six Velar-badged engineering development vehicles were built between 1969 and 1970 and were road registered with the number plates YVB151H through to YVB177H.
Though being chassis no. 3, YVB 153H is believed to have been the first off the production line as a vehicle in that colour was urgently required for marketing. (The Range Rover with chassis no. 1 was a green model with the registration "YVB 151H", and is now on exhibition at Huddersfield Land Rover Centre, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire). The Velar name was derived from the Italian "velare" meaning to veil or to cover. Range Rover development engineer Geof Miller used the name as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company was registered in London and produced 40 pre-production vehicles that were built between 1967 and 1970.
The Range Rover was launched in 1970. In the early 1970s, the Musée du Louvre in Paris exhibited a Range Rover as an "exemplary work of industrial design".
In 1971, ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker used the unproven Range Rover to drive from Algeria to Lagos, Nigeria, to set up a recording studio and jam with Fela Kuti. Predating the Paris-Dakar rally the subsequent documentary is replete with such terrain, documenting the vehicle's endurance.
In 1972, the British Trans-Americas Expedition became the first vehicle-based expedition to traverse the Americas from north to south, including traversing the roadless Darién Gap. The specially modified Range Rovers used for this expedition are now on display in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust collection at Gaydon, Warwickshire.
Range Rover sub-brands have been launched. In 2004, Land Rover debuted the Range Rover Sport, based on the Land Rover Discovery platform. Later models received the latest Range Rover platform. In 2011 came the Range Rover Evoque, and in 2017 the Range Rover Velar (re-using the name of the very first, pre-production Range Rovers).

- Summary: I own the above Land Rover Range Rover. While driving on the highway I heard a loud pop and then found that the interior glass panel of the sunroof was completed shattered into thousands of pieces. The sunroof is composed of two pieces of glass. The exterior glass was not affected. I did nothing to cause this to occur. I found reports online of similar occurrences. The sunroof was inspected by my local Range Rover dealer in Jackson, MS who had no explanation of how this happened or could happen. I was told I would be responsible for the repair. It has yet to be repaired.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

- Summary: The "3rd" brake light on Range Rovers, which are mounted under/on the SUV's rear spoiler, can detach and fly off at highway speeds, especially if any level of vibration is encountered. This high, center-mounted brake light is merely held in place with smooth clips that rely on friction to fasten them; there are no bolts, screws, pins, or even adhesive to securely fasten it. It can easily be removed from its frame (the rear spoiler) with just a slight amount of force. This is, in my opinion, a hazard to other drivers who may be following behind these SUVs.

- Summary: Placed car into park by moving gare dial from drive to Park. Got out of car and car started moving back and I was knocked down by the door and dragged by the car on the driveway. Suffered torn shin with 7 stiches to muscle and 14 stiches, broken foot and lacreations all over the back. 13 year old in the car pushed the off button to turn car off.

The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 8,000.

- Summary: While driving on a clear day on a Virginia State Highway at about 50 mph on Sunday, May 16, 2021, my wife and I heard and felt a very loud explosion as if the car had been hit by a very large object. We observed no immediate damage, saw no debris bounce off the car and the car that was closely following us made no evasive movements as if there was debris in their path. We stopped within a few hundred yards and noticed that the rear 10 inches or so of the moonroof had simply exploded. The glass was buckled up and shattered. We were not injured and the car functioned normally. We are taking it to the Range Rover dealer this morning and they advise me it is not covered by the warranty. My insurance company, USAA, will most likely pay the cost of repair, which is estimated at $5500. I am convinced this was caused by a defect in the glass or faulty design or manufacture. In my view, this is a serious defect with the potential to cause serious injury.

- Summary: I EXPERIENCED AN UNINTENDED POWERED ROLLAWAY. SPECIFICALLY, AS I WAS REVERSING OUT OF MY GARAGE, I NOTICED SOMETHING ON THE GROUND SO I PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK TO PICK IT UP. WHEN I EXITED THE VEHICLE, I WAS STANDING IN THE WEDGE BETWEEN THE DRIVER'S SEAT AND THE OPEN DRIVER'S DOOR, AND THE CAR UNEXPECTEDLY ROLLED IN REVERSE. I DID NOT HEAR OR SEE ANY WARNINGS AT ANY TIME THAT ALERTED ME THAT I WAS IN ANY DANGER. I QUICKLY TRIED TO GET BACK INTO THE CAR TO STOP IT (MY 4-YR-OLD SON WAS INSIDE) AND, WHEN TRYING TO GET BACK IN, I WAS PUSHED OUT, FELL TO THE GROUND, AND FOUND MYSELF FIGHTING WITH THE DOOR AND THE TIRE COMING TOWARD MY HEAD AND BODY. I STUCK MY RIGHT HAND INTO THE CAR TO PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL WITH MY HAND. ULTIMATELY, MY RIGHT HAND FELL OUT OF THE CAR, AND THE CAR ROLLED OVER AND CRUSHED IT. THE DRIVER'S DOOR HIT MY HEAD, WHICH CAUSED A CONCUSSION AND BLEEDING. THE CAR DRAGGED ME FROM THE GARAGE INTO THE DRIVEWAY, CAUSING TIRE BURNS AND SCRAPES ON MY BODY. ULTIMATELY, THE CAR STOPPED WHEN IT ROLLED DOWN THE DRIVEWAY AND HIT A POST ACROSS THE STREET. I WAS THEN TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL IN AN AMBULANCE, WHERE THEY RAN MULTIPLE TESTS ON MY ENTIRE BODY AND DIAGNOSED MY CONCUSSION AND BROKEN HAND. I HAVE SINCE HAD TO UNDERGO RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY ON MY RIGHT, DOMINANT HAND AS THE BONES IN MY HAND WERE CRUSHED BY THE VEHICLE'S TIRE.

- Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA
- Summary: Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Land Rover) is recalling certain 2018-2022 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles equipped with a Surround Camera System. Water may enter into the rearview camera, which can cause the rearview camera image not to appear on the display or display a distorted image. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
- Consequence: A rearview camera image that does not display while in reverse decreases the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of injury or crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will inspect the rearview camera and add a new seal or replace the camera, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed to Range Rover owners March 4, 2024. Interim notification letters were mailed to Range Rover Sport owners March 7, 2024. Range Rover Sport owners will receive a second notice once remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-637-6837. Land Rover's number for this recall is N778.

- Summary: Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC. (Land Rover) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Discovery, and Range Rover Velar vehicles. The Auto High Beam (AHB) system does not indicate through the instrument cluster when the high beams are illuminated automatically. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
- Consequence: The driver may be unaware that the high beams are illuminated, reducing visibility for oncoming traffic, and increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Land Rover will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle software, free of charge. The recall began April 7, 2021. Owners may contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-637-6837. Land Rover's number for this recall is N556.

- Summary: Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Land Rover) is recalling certain 2019 Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar and Discovery vehicles. The affected vehicles are equipped with V6 or V8 engines whose crankshaft pulley retaining bolt may fracture possibly resulting in engine failure.
- Consequence: Engine failure can increase the risk of crash.
- Remedy: Land Rover has notified owners, and dealers will replace the crankshaft pulley center retaining bolt, free of charge. The recall began February 12, 2019. Owners may contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-637-6837. Land Rover's number for this recall is N276.

There are many reviews online about the Range Rover, and before I owned one, I was excited about it too. However, after owning one, I was disappointed with how it drove, the uncomfortable hard leather, and the lack of space in the trunk area. I also experienced several maintenance problems, and even the smallest mechanical fix cost at least $1k every time. Therefore, I cannot recommend this car, despite how beautiful it looks on the outside and the appeal that comes with owning one.
